Chapter 9: Just a Light in the Dark.

Rogue had spent nearly two weeks in Main Hatton after getting his new bank card, he'd mostly been catching up with Jason and getting to know Coco who as it turned out were planning on getting married before the birth of their child Jason of course asked Rogue to be his best man which Rogue agreed to if he was in Equestria at the time, but he didn't know where to get a tux from, until Coco suggested Rarity who lived in Ponyville and as Rogue recalled is one of Twilight's friends that he met at Griffin Stone. Eventually Rogue left Main Hatton and made his way north towards Rainbow falls and a Place called the Iron Hills where Equestria mined most of the iron that it used to make steel.

As Rogue walked down yet another lonely dirt path with nothing but the clothes on his back and a duffle bag filled with clean changes of clothes slung across his back his spirits where higher than they had been in years after finding Jason in Main Hatton after that small amount of time he'd spent with someone he considered his brother he felt ready to take on the whole world, even Storm Peek mountain seemed like a joke to him now. As he walked taking in the beauty of the land he couldn't help but think about how this world was so much nicer than Earth but deep down he could feel some part of him longing to go back to the world he was born on, he put those thoughts to rest by reminding himself that with the powers he now had the temptation to take over the world would be too strong and with no one to stop him he'd just end up being a monster no different from Umbra.

"Umbra, that reminds me I have a score to settle with her and by that I mean I'm going to plant my boot so far up her ass she'll taste it in the back of her throat." Rogue thought as he spotted a sign that said, Iron Hills ahead 0.5 miles. "That's good at least, I should be there in another half an hour assuming I can avoid running into random bull shit anyway." Rogue said out loud as he passed a wagon of mining gear that had been left behind to rust years ago. Unfortunately for him his negative luck stat bit him in the ass hard again as he could see a metric fuck ton of guards posted at the entrance to the Iron Hills. "Fuck my life, what did I do to make the God of luck hate me." Rogue thought as he dropped into his shadow to avoid being seen by the guards, as he got closer he could hear two guards talking, so he listened in.

"Can you believe it, a Moorwen here in Equestria?" A female guard asked while she stood with a male guard at the small check point on the road leading up to one of the many mines.

"To be honest, if I hadn't seen the bodies with my own to eyes I don't think I would believe it." The male guard said.

"So a miner really was killed?" The female guard asked.

"No, it was the entire day shift crew over at Iron Breaker mine, the one who reported it was a mail pony who saw the thing go in and nopony come out." The male guard said grimly.

"So is it still in there?" The female guard asked.

"Yeah, Princess Luna and a detachment of night guards are coming after sunset to deal with it." The male guard said not making a visible movement as he stood at his post.

"So their not looking for me, and did they fucking say Moorwen, like the bio-luminesant monster from the 2008 film Outlander." Rogue thought remembering the terrifying form of the Moorwen from the film.

Picture is concept art from the film.

As he easily snuck past the guards as a shadow, as he snuk passed more guards he couldn't' help but remember the monster from the film an how it could easily blend into darkness and attract its prey with it's flickering lights, he also recalled that only high grade metal could hurt it, we'll that and fire but that might just piss it off. "If a fucking Moorwen is here, then I'm not sticking around any longer than I have to." Rogue thought as he made his way to a more secluded part of the Iron Hills where he spent the next few weeks.

Two Weeks Later.

The full moon sat high in a clear starry night the winter breeze biting at everything and everyone who was outside, Rogue stood among floating rocks his hands raised and open as metal dust came from the rocks and formed sharp blades of sharp jagged metal which he then launched like javelins into a tree only to pull them out combine them into balls of iron before letting them drop to the ground with a heavy metallic thud. "Ok, that's good enough for me, time to G.T.F.O before that Moorwen finishes eating pony ass alive and starts looking for man's butt." Rogue said as he went back to his makeshift camp in the depleted and abandoned Ebonshield mine in the old supervisor's lodge and started packing up his things as quickly as he could packing his belongings into his duffle bag, just as he zipped up his bag he heard the sound of rushed foot steps and the flapping of leathery wings. Rogue went over to the window staying by the wall to avoid being seen as he saw six night guards two of which were under each of Luna's arms helping her walk and they all looked like they had been through hell and back. Scratched and dented armor covered in dirt and blood and Luna looked like her entire torso had been in the jaws of a large creature and once again Rogue saw a flash of the Moorwen in his mind and how it was more than big enough to pick up a full grown man by the torso in it's jaws.

"Get the Princess inside." A mare with distinct fiery hair and tail said pointing to the workers lodge not noticing the Moorwen sneaking into her blind spot.

"Is that Dark Blaze." Rogue thought as he looked at the night guard mare who just gave an order to the others, then he saw it a monster he was only comfortable seeing from the other side of a screen. "Jesus fucking Christ, it really is a Moorwen." Rogue said out loud as he watched it stalk Blaze from her blind spot while the other guards were busy with the injured Princess. "It's after Blaze." Rogue thought as electrical sparks crackled from his body as he opened the door of the supervisor's lodge and ran out towards Dark Blaze at lightning speed. In slow motion Rogue could see the Moorwen ponce towards Dark Blaze with a roar as parts of it's body began brightly glowing red but Rogue was faster and before the massive beast could touch the mare it was sent flying dozens of feet back by a lightning speed punch from Rogue, the ponies all watched in wide eyed disbelief at the sight of the white haired human wearing a red trench coat as electrical sparks danced across his body, who'd just sent the monster that they'd been struggling against for two weeks flying with only a punch even Luna in her half dead state had seen what Rogue had done and in that moment before she passed out from blood loss she knew he was the only one who stood a chance against the Moorwen.

"Rogue... you saved me." Blaze said looking at the young man she'd met at Canterlot castle a few months ago. "Is it me, or is he a little taller." Blaze thought as she kept her gaze on Rogue, as the Ponies watched the Human with their jaws on the floor the Moorwen got back up seemingly unharmed by Rogue's attack and roared again it's body glowing once more as it began to approach. Rogue how ever had different plans and raised a hand into the air only to bring it back down as the heavens unleashed a massive bolt of lightning in front of the Moorwen making it jump back in fear before it ran away in the direction of Iron Breaker mine. The night guards took Luna into the building while Blaze stayed out side watching Rogue as he kept an eye on the tree line just out side of the mine keeping an eye out for anything even just a light in the dark.

"It'll be back." Rogue said not taking his gaze from the tree line as Dark Blaze walked up to him.

"Thank you... thank you... thank you." Blaze said as she hugged Rogue from behind putting her arms and wings around him in a close embrace.

"Any time, Blaze." Rogue said having almost forgotten what it was like to be held so close.

"What now?" Blaze asked holding the man that had just saved her life.

"I don't know, but I think checking on the half dead Princess you guys brought might be a good place to start." Rogue said about to start walking but Blaze was still holding on to him. "Do you mind letting go?" Rogue asked.

"Oh right, sorry." Dark Blaze said as she released her embrace on the young man feeling sad that she had to let go of him, the two then walked to the Miners lodge where the medic was busy bandaging Luna's wounds to stop the bleeding. "How's the Princess doing?" Dark Blaze asked the medic.

"Not good Sargent Blaze, I don't have the tools or supplies to deal with these injuries, if the Princess doesn't get to a hospital in two hours she could die." The medic explained.

"What but the nearest hospital is weeks away." One of the few remaining guards said.

"So there's nothing we can do then?" Dark Blaze asked.

"I'm afraid so." The medic confirmed only for Rogue to walk up to the unconscious half dead Princess and picked her up in his arms alarming the night guards around him.

"What are you doing with the Princess?" The medic asked as the other guards including Dark Blaze drew their weapons on him.

"I'm doing something you can't." Rogue said.

"What does that mean?" The medic asked as Rogue's eyes started glowing red and in a flash of red light he was gone and reappeared inside the lobby of the Main Hatton hospital.

"HAY FUCKING DUMB ASSES!!!" Rogue shouted getting the attention of everyone in the lobby. "THERE'S A HALF DEAD PRINCESS OVER HERE THAT NEEDS TO GO TO E R RIGHT NOW!!!" Rogue shouted as the doctors and nurses scrambled to get a bed for Luna, once they found a bed big enough Rogue lay her down on it and she was taken away to be treated, Rogue then teleported back to the Miner's lodge at Ebonshield mine startling the guards.

"Where's the Princess?" The guards demanded.

"Main Hatton hospital on her way to E R as we speak." Rogue answered calmly and the guards lowered their weapons in relief. "Now then, who's up for a bit of monster hunting?" Rogue said as he walked to the door.

"You can't be serious, there were a hundred of us and it picked us off one by one." A short guards mare said while keeping an eye out at the window.

Rogue simply shrugged his shoulders. "Fine I guess, your all a bunch of limp dick spineless cowereds." Rogue said opening the door as he walked back out into the freezing night air.

"Really, none of you, and you call yourselves Luna's night guard." Dark Blaze said following Rogue out.

"I am no cowered." The guard who mentioned how far the hospital was said as he picked up his spear and followed Blaze and Rogue on the hunt for the beast that had almost Killed Luna, the two night guards followed Rogue while their remaining guards stayed behind to lick their wounds while making excuses to comfort themselves.

"Rogue wait up." Dark Blaze said as she caught up with him the only other guard brave enough to look the jaws of death in the eye beside her.

Rogue looked back at the two who'd decided to follow him. "Hay spear dude, you got a name?" Rogue asked as he turned his head back to where he was going.

"Shadow Lance." The dark stallion said.

"Shit, what is it with you Bat Ponies having bad ass names." Rogue said as he led the two ponies back towards Iron Breaker mine, after a few hours of walking Rogue, Blaze and Lance made it back to Iron Breaker and the sight of an absolute slaughter, blood and body parts everywhere though somewhat more concerning was that all the more intact bodies had been dragged into the mine. "So, is there anything about this place I should know before we go in there?" Rogue asked looking at the ominous opening to the mine blood trails leading inside as the reek of death spilled out.

"Yeah, the mine connects to a natural cave system down there that we didn't know about until it was too late, that's how the Moorwen was able to avoid owe traps and get the drop on us." Dark Blaze explained as she picked up a bow and quiver of arrows that had been dropped by one of the guards who wasn't so lucky.

"You guys are going to need better weapons than those if you want to hurt the Moorwen." Rogue said turning to the two Bat Ponies.

"But all the good gear that can kill a Moorwen is in Canterlot." Shadow Lance said.

"Then I'll just improve what you've got here." Rogue said walking up to the two guards.

"And how are you going to do that?" Dark Blaze asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Hold out your weapons and I'll show you." Rogue said as the elements of Fire, Water, Shadow, Lightning and Metal flowed from his body as his eyes turned gold before the two who watched in silence as Rogue took each of their weapons in a hand and poured the power of the elements into the weapons making them transform, Shadow Lance's spear turned into a black trident and Dark Blaze's bow gained sharp blades on it's arms with the ability to apply all five elemental powers onto the arrows fired by the bow.

"Amazing, It feels so light." Lance said as he began twilling his new trident around at great speed before thrusting it forward making it extend double its length in an instant only to retract back just as fast.

"Incredible, I've never heard of a weapon that can apply so many effects at once and these blades are perfect for close range fighting." Blaze said as she fired an arrow and did a few slashes with her upgraded bow.

"Now lets get in there, and find us a monster." Rogue said turning back to the mine entrance as he walked in and though he didn't show it on the outside he was more than a little scared of tight spaces and man eating monsters lurking in the dark, as the three brave fools got deeper into the mine the stench of death only got worse until they reached the point where the mine and caves met. "So did you guys send anyone past this point?" Rogue asked as he looked back over his shoulder at the two ponies behind him, the night vision spell he'd learned letting him see in the dark just as well as they could.

"No, the Moorwen started picking us off before we could send any pony in to look around." Blaze explained.

"Right, well then keep your eyes and ears open." Rogue said as he entered the cave followed by Lance then Blaze. "This way." Rogue said pointing right.

"Why?" Lance asked.

"Because the reek of death is stronger than the other way." Rogue explained as he pushed a head following his nose and ignoring his own fear, after crawling through a few tight caves they found the Moorwen's pantry, a literal pile of pony and animal corpses piled at least thirty feet high with the bodies either decomposing or being in different states of consumption.

"By the moon." Blaze and Lance said together.

"There are more than just dead guards here." Rogue thought as he looked at a pile of bodies, as he heard something coming. "Hide something is coming." Rogue whispered as the three instantly went into the shadows, moments later the Moorwen entered the cavern and began feeding eating entire torso's whole and ignoring the legs. Rogue looked at Blaze and Lance he then pointed at himself and made a gesture of punching the palm of his hand then pointed at the Moorwen, he then pointed at them and made a cercal around gesture he then repeated the punch gesture and pointed at the Moorwen again. It took a few minuets for the two to understand Rogue's plan, he would attack first while they flanked the Moorwen and attacked when they were in position using himself as a distraction, the two Ponies nodded and got ready to move while the Human charged his body with elemental power and launched his attack at lightning speed punching the Moorwen in the side of the head and back stepping away from it quickly as it recovered and started glowing red, the Moorwen lunged forward at Rogue jaws open wide ready to snap shut but he dropped into his shadow and reemerged under the Moorwen delivering a nasty upper cut to the beast's chin that knocked it on its back.

Before the Moorwen could right its self and get back up three arrows charged with multiple elemental powers struck the Moorwen in it's soft underside dealing massive damage, just as the beast got its self up right Shadow Lance dropped like a missile driving his new trident deep into the Moorwen's back making it let out a weak roar of pain, the sort you'd expect from a dyeing animal, Rogue then ran up to the Moorwen and delivered a heavy right left combo followed up with a Sparta kick to the center of its head knocking the beast back from the three, the Moorwen looked up at the three intent on killing it and whipped its tail around to Lance intending to take his head off but Rogue shoved him out of the way and was hit instead getting three deep cuts across his upper chest, if Rogue had been a shorter smaller man of the same height and build as a stallion then the cuts across his chest would have cut through bone into his heart and lungs killing him instantly but thankfully he was still alive but he'd been brought down onto one of his knees from the wound as blood began running from the wound like a river. "Are you all right?" Blaze asked as Rogue got back to his feet despite his wound.

"It'll take more than this to kill me." Rogue said putting on a brave face despite the pain in every breath if only to keep Blaze's and Lance's spirits high as well as sooth his own pride. The Moorwen got back to it's feet and was about to attack the three at once but while it was in the air Rogue caught it with his magic and slammed it into the floor and walls with more than enough force to break it's bones before telekinetically shoving it into the wall with all his might and fading strength, the Moorwen pushed back against Rogue's magic moving away from the wall a little. "What are you waiting for kill it already, while I have it pinned down!" Rogue shouted. Blaze and Lance looked at Rogue as he braced the arm he was using to pin the Moorwen with his free hand, the two nodded to each other and Blaze fired every arrow she had left into the pinned monster while Lance got in close and used his trident to cut and slash at the beast's soft areas aiming for the tendons when he could hoping to cripple the Moorwen's movements. When it stopped moving Lance and Blaze went to Rogue's side trying to help him up but he shoved them off as he got back to his feet on his own. "Enough of that, I still have my pride." Rogue said as he got back to his full height towering over the two Ponies as he walked up to the barely breathing Moorwen and raised his right arm made a fist and formed a sword length blade of magic at his knuckle and cut the Moorwen's head off and dissipated the magic blade.

"Are you alright?" Dark Blaze asked as she came to Rogue's side in case he needed help walking.

"Yeah, that looks pretty bad." Lance said coming to Rogue's other side.

"T'is but a scratch." Rogue said quoting the Black Knight from Monty Python search for the holy grail.

"What the hay does that mean?" Blaze asked.

"I could explain it but that would take to long, did you guys double tap that thing?" Rogue said as he noticed black crystals around the Moorwen's rear back leg. "So Umbra is behind this, just another reason to kick her ass." Rogue thought as he almost went down on a knee again. "Let's get out of here, you guys can have what's left of the bodies retrieved later." Rogue said walking towards the tunnel they had kame from only to stumble to his knees and have Blaze help him walk out of the cave and followed it back to Iron Breaker mine, when the three exited the mine they were surrounded by over five hundred of Celestia's day guards.

"Rogue Winters you are here by under arrest by order of her exultancy Princess Celestia." the Guard in charge of small army said as he stepped forth.

"Am I now, well come and get me." Rogue said shooting into the sky as a bolt of lightning only to reach Ebonshield mine in a few seconds, hitting the ground and rolling back to his feet he stumbled to the supervisors lodge and grabbed his duffle bag and once again shot into the sky as a bolt of lightning traveling much further this time and heading south away from the winter weather.
