Fluttershy's Nature Show, Season Two
Episode Eleven: Bear, Part Two
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe camera pans back across the wall of statuettes and carvings, all while Harry grunts and groans in the background.
"He started with just carving crude imitations of fish when his mom wouldn't take him fishing," Fluttershy translates. "He loved fish, and still does to this day, and if he couldn't taste them, he thought it would be nice to at least look at them. Over the years, he kept doing it over and over, just to pass the time, and when he was allowed to go fishing on his own, he took the time to note the differences between the fish and started to really ramp up his quality. Sometimes, he'd come down to the river and not even catch anything; he'd just watch them swim and try to figure out their movement. You can really tell when you look at his brown trout carvings that he has a fascination with their movements."
The camera moves from statuettes to carvings on flat planks.
"It's not just fish that puts him in a good mood, though. He also likes other things. You can tell by the carvings here that he enjoys berry bushes and honey. He's a real food-lover, you see. He likes having good food, and he doesn't mind sharing it with his friends. Nothing makes him feel happier than seeing other critters enjoying themselves by his design. He loves knowing that he's responsible for the happiness of others."
The panning comes to a stop on the carving of Fluttershy. Harry seems to become more vocal about this one, while Fluttershy becomes less so.
"He says that he enjoys looking at things that are beautiful. He says that one didn't come out right, and he's working on another to replace it."
"This is clearly an image of you," notes Twilight, turning the camera back to Fluttershy, who is sporting an obvious blush. "And it sounds like he said a lot more than that."
She nods. "He did. He went over why he thought I was beautiful and what the image is going to show, and it's just... It doesn't feel great to say things like that about myself."
"But you say nice things about ponies all the time."
"Yeah..."
"Just yesterday, you told Rarity in detail beyond even my understanding how much you liked her dress. Why can't you repeat his words, here?"
Fluttershy lowered her head. "It's different when I'm the focus of the conversation. Rarity loves to hear how great her work is. I'm content to just let my accomplishments speak for themselves, thanks. I don't want to brag about how good I look; it feels dirty."
"If you say so. But Fluttershy?"
"Yeah?"
"You have beautiful hair and an adorable face."
Fluttershy turns even more red as Harry starts to pick himself up. He roars quietly, then walks into the next chamber, and Fluttershy and Twilight follow him.
"So, this is his dining room," translates Fluttershy, drawing attention to the crude, but flat raised platform that kind of resembles what could be called a table, and some rough-hewn seats that were obviously a gift from Fluttershy, as they're cushioned and made from fabric with a butterfly print. "He doesn't use it all the time, mostly when he's expecting company. He's actually prepared a small arrangement for us, today."
Harry reaches back to show that he has a woven straw picnic basket, and upon lifting the cover, he shows that it's full to the brim with wild berries, and two sealed combs of honey.
"He has opted to honor my vegetarian diet and skipped the salmon in tonight's dish."
"I like salmon," interjected Twilight.
Harry furrows his brow and snorts.
"What she means is, "We're so very grateful that you've invited us into your home and made dinner for us,"" says Fluttershy, bowing to Harry. "Your hospitality speaks to your caring and sensitivity."
The video cuts out and turns back on in a different room. Here, there's a big bundle of leaves and grasses, all dried out and covered with yet more fabric. It's about as close to a bed as a bear could be expected to make, considering they were more well-known to sleep curled up on the floor of their cave.
Fluttershy sits down in between Harry and the camera, looking into the lens. "Okay, are we ready?"
"Yeah," answers Twilight. "Oh, wait, hold on..." Twilight comes into frame to wipe a bit of berry juice off of Fluttershy's lip, then goes back out of frame. "Okay, go."
"Before we shut down for the night, I want to issue an important disclaimer. Harry the bear is a very learned, very sophisticated grizzly. Just because he enjoys good food and good company does not mean that all bears do. I do not encourage you to go seek out a bear to be your friend, I just wanted to make sure that you all know that bears are not simple savages, and that they are capable of being kind and gentle."
Fluttershy looks up at Harry, who nods, then opens his mouth.
Bears have very long, very sharp teeth attached to powerful jaws. If I were with a very violent bear the same size and strength of Harry, he could bite right through my arm in one chomp."
Harry turns his nose up at the idea.
"More likely, he'd just grab it and rip it off."
Harry gags, scrunching his face in disgust.
"But their teeth aren't the only thing you need to worry about. It's not even the first thing you need to worry about. Harry, if you would show your claws to the camera?"
He holds up his paw, still reeling from the idea of doing that to Fluttershy, of all ponies.
"Now, as you can see, they have a lot of claws, and they're very sharp. Harry uses his to carve statuettes and decorative carvings, but not all bears do. Most of them use their claws to grab their prey and tear them open. But Harry isn't like that, so we're safe."
The image distorts a little, then comes right back to where it was. "And that's a wrap," says Twilight. "We should probably head home before sunset."
Fluttershy scrunches up her face. "Twilight, it's after sunset."
"Oh..."
"We can just stay here for the night. Harry has a guest room. The mattress is a little small, but I'm sure he won't mind if you sleep there tonight."
"What about you?"
"Well, like I said, the mattress is small. I'll just sleep in here."
