I tightened my coat around me as I shook the snow off my hands. Stupid Canterlot winters. Stupid damn cold.
“Morning,” Indigo handed me a hot chocolate as I walked into the school, narrowly avoiding some classmates and I kissed his cheek.
“Morning. Thanks for the hot chocolate,” I smiled warmly and squeezed his hand. “How are you?”
“Good, you?”
I made a so-so gesture with my hand and shrugged. The cold isn’t my friend and I’m not really happy during the winter. It sucks, in lesser terms.
“I got a rare chance to meet Wallflower today. I’m going to offer her a position on the Student Council. As the leader of the Garden Club, she should be on the team to be able to make decisions and allow us to maybe get more members. I got Trixie to agree to have Wallflower meet me at lunch so we won’t sit together today. Hopefully that’s okay,” I leaned forward and kissed his cheek again.
“That’s fine. I’m more interested in how you got Trixie to agree to that. Trixie is like, the hardest person to negotiate with,” Indigo mused and I had to admit he had a point. It hadn’t been easy but even Trixie knows when to see reason apparently. That and baked goods are always a strong motivator, no matter the situation.
“Cookies. She loves peanut butter cookies. Peanut butter, anything to be honest. I will never understand that girl.”
“I don’t think anyone at Canterlot High will,” Indigo shook his head as a laughing Diamond Tiara ran by with Twist, Alula and Dinky.
“Slow down!” Fuchsia called out as she ran behind them. “Oh, hey Sophisticata. Be nice to my sister. Bye, gotta chase down four unruly children!” The two of us stared after her as she dodged through the crowds of people.
“That was something,” I mused and took a sip of my hot chocolate. “You actually made it how I like. I really love you, you know?”
“I’m awesome like that.”
“Okay, Dash two point oh. Calm it down over there,” I teased with a grin and my grin faded. Just mentioning the name Dash almost seemed to make the hallway darker than it was a few moments before. Winter break had only been over for a week and most people were still hating each other, ignoring each other or in rare cases, fighting one another.
I will admit, I ended friendships over people sending the account secrets but I would never start a physical fight over it. I don’t really like violence, in all honesty. No one sent in secrets about me but just because my friends sent others secrets doesn’t make them my friend anymore.
“I’m gonna get to class. Love you,” Indigo waved and I turned a faint pink as a few classmates who heard snickered.
“Love you too,” I waved and jumped slightly as Spitfire bumped me with a smirk.
“So you and Indigo, huh? How’s that going?” Spitfire winked and I shrugged. “Use your voice, girl! God gave you one for a reason.”
“It’s going good. I mean, we’ve both liked each other for a long time so I already had a feeling it would be good. Can’t remember the last time I dated.”
“Same. Anyway, I need a favor,” Spitfire commented casually and I internally sighed. “Walk with me, please.”
“Alright. What’s up?”
“So. Sunset,” Spitfire looked around. “Okay good, she’s not around. None of her friends either. That girl has eyes and ears everywhere these days it seems. Just like prior fall formal but at least now she’s nice. So I wanna get her back on the soccer team. But we all know I’m not good with delicate situations. Blueberry was right, I should have at least either backed her publicly or at the very least privately. I need to get Rainbow back on the team too but she probably won’t wanna talk to me.”
“And you need me because?” I raised an eyebrow. “Why don’t you have Soarin or Misty do it?”
“They won’t help me,” Spitfire grumbled and kicked a locker shut that some student hadn’t shut all the way. “Said it’s my job as Captain. They’re making it up to Sunset in other ways. This is my mistake to fix, not theirs.”
I hummed and nodded.
“Why Rainbow? Aren’t you upset with hee for Scootaloo’s involvement?” I asked curiously and Spitfire shook her head. Interesting. Some people were according to rumors I heard. But the hate towards Rainbow Dash didn’t even come close to the hate Applejack and Rarity were getting. A small part of me felt bad for them. Only a small part, though.
“Nah, she didn’t know Scootaloo was doing that. Not even I knew Scootaloo was capable of that and I spend a lot of time with that girl. Just goes to show people can hide their true nature,” Spitfire sighed and balled her left hand into a fist. “Fucking hell. I’m so stupid.”
“No you’re not,” I answered and placed a hand on her shoulder hesitantly. Spitfire was never really fond of being touched and she tensed up slightly. “Remember, you never went out of your way to hurt or insult Sunset. You were right to kick her off the team. It may have even helped keep her safe in the long run. Remember, after the fall formal when Coach Iron Will brought out the dodgeballs and assigned team captains. Sunset was chosen last and used as target practice by everyone, even her own teammates.”
Spitfire hung her head as we paused at her locker and I cracked my neck. I should probably change up my sleeping position because my current one just isn’t doing it for me.
“I remember that. And the time someone threw a basketball at her head. For being all about the environment and an pacifist eco kid, Captain Planet is surprisingly violent at times,” Spitfire muttered and started entering her combination. “How do you do it?”
“Put in a locker combination? Uh once to the right, two times to the left and-”
“That’s not what I meant,” Spitfire interrupted me with a huff. “I know how to work a combination lock. I meant how are you still going like what happened doesn’t bother you? It’s been hard to sleep. I can’t stop thinking about all I could have done differently.”
“I don’t know,” I admitted and tapped a finger against a cold lockers surface that had scratches in it and some scribbles. “I just wake up and go, I guess. Sleeping has been hard for me too. Been throwing all my energy into helping others sort out their feelings that I haven’t really had a chance to confront my own on the matter. And that makes it easier, if that makes sense.”
“I suppose,” Spitfire mused as she stepped back and hung up her back pack. “Thanks for the advice. Now I gotta figure out having Sunset not murder Dash when I bring her back to the team too. Sucks being the boss somedays.”
“Relatable. Text or call me how it goes. I gotta get to homeroom.”
Spitfire tossed me a lazy wave as I took off down the hall. I should really prioritize my time better in the mornings.
