Spitfire

I idly bounced a soccer ball off my foot before catching it, leaning against a wall as I watched the other people in my gym class playing dodge ball. Well, almost everyone. I was too frustrated to play and Sunset was just sitting on the bleachers drawing.

“Sunset!” I shouted and she jumped slightly. “My office, now.” Benefits of being the team captain for most of the sports teams, I got my own office. It’s a small, dusty brown room but it works. Something about how all captains got their own office and it’s tradition I guess. Canterlot High is obsessed with tradition.

A few people gave me confused looks as I kicked the soccer ball hard into a goal.

“Goal!” Surprise shouted and I rolled my eyes as she got hit in the back with a ball. “Aw.”

I nudged my door open with a boot, pointing lazily at a chair across my desk as I flung myself down, my chair spinning around in a circle.

“Sit. Please.”

“What do you want Spitfire? Gonna kick me off the soccer team again?” Sunset sneered and I winced, looking away. “Oh wait, I forgot. You did that already.”

I swear, she is trying her damnest to make this hard on me.

“No, I’m not. I’m actually inviting you back to the team. Like I promised, I told you if you were innocent I’d bring you back. I keep my promises,” I answered and opened my drawer, glancing at her quickly before pulling out a folded uniform and setting it on the desk, pushing it to her with a finger. “Still a medium?”

“Mhm.”

I looked at Sunset before leaning back in my chair. We looked scarily similar, with our similar skin color and our fiery hair. The only really difference between us was our eye color. Where hers were blue, mine were a orangish brown. The amount of people asking if we were sisters or related was insane.

“Give me one good reason why I should come back,” Sunset leaned back and crossed her legs, placing her boots on my desk and I resisted the urge to push them off. “Sure, you told me you’d bring me back if I was innocent but why the hell did it even get that far? You were supposed to be on my side. You said we were friends after the Battle of the Bands yet you still threw me away like yesterday’s garbage.”

I rested my hands on my desk and chewed the inside of my mouth. She had a point, I did say that. Sunset picked up a picture on my desk of us all together as a team with Sunset and Rainbow holding a trophy we had won.

“I remember this day. We played Trottingham. Mystery Mint broke her leg accidentally and you had to call me in, even if the team still wasn’t sure about me. That call ended up winning us the game and you all invited me out to celebrate at Dairy Queen. That was the first time you all ever invited me after a game. You had even gave me your number. Cloudkicker and Fleetfoot had high fived me. And now I’m dating Cloudkicker. That was a good day,” Sunset sighed and set the picture back. “I threw mine away in a fit of rage and crying after you all accused me.”

I flinched and looked away. I remember getting shit from Fleetfoot at the time for bringing Sunset in at first. It had been a last ditch, desperate call that somehow by the grace of God worked.

“So why should I forgive you, other than allowing you to keep your promise?” Sunset crossed her arms and I inhaled.

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,” I quoted and Sunset tilted in her head in confusion. “Matthew six fourteen. It means in order to receive God’s forgiveness, a person must also be willing to forgive others.”

“I didn’t know you were religious,” Sunset mused and removed her feet from my desk.

“Yeah. I go to the same church that Raindrops goes to. Getting off topic,” I brushed off my jeans. “Just carrying all that hate and anger you feel for us is only going to hurt you in the long run. Hate is so negative. I may have not liked you, but I never once hated you.”

Sunset examined me before nodding.

“Please?” I added and watched her pick up her uniform, my eyes briefly glancing at the shadow outside my door as it disappeared again. “Kicking off the team kept you safe too. None of them even thought to come after you since you got kicked off. I know it’s not helpful at all, but I am sorry. For everything. I should have helped you more.”

“It’s fine I guess. Peer pressure can be a bitch. Sorry for being so hostile before,” Sunset rubbed the back of her neck with a frown and I waved a hand dismissively.

“It was warranted and to be honest, it didn’t phase me at all. It’s hard to intimidate me, after all,” I smirked at her. “So nice try.”

“Damn. I’ll have to up my game,” Sunset sighed wistfully and we shared a laugh. “Thanks Spitfire.”

“Anytime. Give Cloudkicker my regards, would ya?” I requested and she nodded as we fist bumped. “Also, will you unblock my number now? I’ve been trying to call you for two weeks now.”

“I never blocked you. I just had it muted so I didn’t get any notifications. You’re probably one of the only people I didn’t block,” Sunset answered and stretched out her arms. “Sorry about the boots on the desk. I won’t do it again.”

“You’re damn right you won’t,” I agreed with a frown. “Now thanks for coming back, go back to gym class. I’ll be back in a minute.”

Sunset nodded and walked out of my office leaving the door open halfway as Rainbow walked in.

“Next time, you should really try hiding better,” I commented and Rainbow growled.

“How did you even see me?” She demanded and I gave her a flat look.

“You walk loud. And Sunset knew it was you too based on how she tensed up halfway through our conversation. Here’s your uniform, don’t antagonize anyone. Now go back to class.”

“What, now Bible verses or anything for me?” Rainbow asked and caught the uniform I flung at her.

“No, I reserved it for Sunset and I’ve ran out of wisdom for today. Have a good day.”
