At her prime, Sunset Shimmer was the undisputed queen of Canterlot High School. Through clever use of blackmail and manipulation, she kept the clueless masses under her rule. Nothing happened at CHS that she didn't know about, and if it did, she made it her business to find out. Yet for all the time she'd spent on this world, she yearned for the power and warmth of magic. She desired nothing short of absolute control over CHS—her own little fief on a foreign world, and the first phase of a grand experiment.

With a plan to earn her former mentor's attention once more, all Sunset needed was to remain on top and in control until the portal to Equestria opened once more. Her plan did not account for mysterious tragedies in the school district, disappearances, or deaths among the student body, however. As the school's only expert on magic, Sunset may be all that stands between this world and a magical catastrophe. All the while, one of the school's outsiders finds herself in the middle of it all. Not only are people around her going missing—or worse—but she's also the prime suspect. To get to the bottom of it all, Sunset may have to sacrifice it all to bring this case to a close.
