Chapter 2

The moment the final bell rang all of the students eagerly rushed out of the school. Most of the students were either heading home or heading to main street. Others stayed with their friends and hung out on the school grounds. Those stayed either had practice after school or were part of clubs. Sparky was part of the later. He slowly walked through the halls of the school; he was heading towards room three hundred and seven. That was the room were the members of the club gathered. As he walked to the room he pulled out his deck. He stared down at his deck.

He heard the voice of Scout in his head. “Are you still worried, Sparky?”

Sparky shook his head; he was still getting used to the earpiece him and engineer had made. It allowed him to talk to his cards; only through thought. The engineer suggested it that way he wouldn't get funny looks from his classmates. On the plus side he could talk to his cards whenever he wanted. The downside was the small headaches that came from using the earpiece.

Scout repeated. “Uh, hello. Earth to Sparky.”

Sparky replied. “Yeah.” He quickly added. “Yeah, yeah I'm fine.”

Spy spoke. “You are nervous aren't you.”

Sparky sighed and nodded as he turned down another hall. He answered. “Yeah.” he added. “I've never really hung out with anypony other than family.”

Heavy spoke. “You will be fine.”

Scout added. “Just remember. You've got us backing you up.”

Sparky commented. “But, you're all cards.” He asked. “How in the world can all of you help me.”

The soldier yelled. “LISTEN HERE MAGGOT!”

Sparky yelled in pain. “Ahh!”

Medic scolded. “Soldier, careful! Your shouting is gonna make his headache worse!”

Sniper commented. “You're shouting is not gonna help him either mate.”

Sparky gently rubbed his forehead as his cards argued amongst themselves. He really had no idea what he was getting into. He looked ahead and saw the room where the club was. They even had a sign that had their clubs name on it. He came to a slow stop and stared at the door. He felt his heart thumping loudly in his chest. Maybe, he could talk his dad out of this.....no. No, he had to go through with this. Besides, he already had a deck made. He took in a deep breath and walked up to the door. When he was close enough; he reached for the knob and slowly turned the handle. As he opened the door he could hear voices inside the room.

A female voice spoke. “Hey, somepony is coming in.”

Another voice, a male's voice, asked. “Hey, isn't that the sheriffs kid?”

As Sparky entered the room he kept his eyes to the ground. He could feel everypony's eyes on him. It made him feel more nervous. He was tempted to bolt out of the room right now. But, he heard Heavy reassure him again. He gulped down the lump that formed in his throat and looked up. He was greeted by everypony's smiles. There were a total of ten ponies in the room. Seven of them were fillies, the other three were colts.

One of the colts, a peach colored colt with a pale mane and tail, walked up to him. He had a soccer ball on his flank. The colt commented. “About time we got another boy in our club.” He smiled again and introduced himself. “My name's Ace.” He extended his hoof out to him and finished. “Nice to meet you.”

For a moment Sparky stared at the colts hoof. Slowly, he reached for his hoof and gently shook hooves......claw and hoof with him. He introduced himself. “Hi, I'm Sparky.” His voice broke a little.

One of the other colts commented. “I knew it! He is the Sheriff's son!”

The others in the room shushed the colt. One of the mares scolded him. “Teddy, you don't have to shout.”

Sparky focused on where the two voices had come from. One was a colt with a blue coat and orange mane and tail. He had a pair of sunglasses on his head and a comb on his flank. The other was a filly with a white coat and a pink mane and tail. She had a ribbon in her mane and hearts on her flank. The colt was rubbing the back of his head.

He apologized. “Sorry, Sweetheart.”

Sweetheart shook her head before saying. “It's okay. Just remember to use your inside voice, Teddy.”

She looked at Sparky and smiled before she apologized. “Sorry.” She introduced herself. “I'm Sweetheart, nice to meet you.”

Sparky replied. “Hi.”

One of the other colts, he had a blue coat with an orange mane and tail, walked up to him. He saw the fleur-de-lis on his flank. The colt introduced himself. “Names Lancer.” He asked him. “So you like playing Kaijudo?”

Sparky answered. “Actually, I just got my deck yesterday.” He admitted. “I never played the game before.”

A light cream colored mare spoke up. “Never played the game before?” Sparky looked at her, he saw she had a purple mane and tail and she had the image of candy on her flank. She asked him. “So you're still new to the game?” He nodded and she smiled while introducing herself. “My name's Bon Bon, if you want I can show you how to play the game.”

Before Sparky could reply Ace spoke up. “Hold on, Bon Bon. You know the rules.” They looked at him and he finished. “The last pony to join our club duels the new member.” He turned and looked over at Teddy. “Teddy, looks like you're going to be showing the new member how to play.”

Scout commented. “Ha, they don't know we gave you crash course last night.”

Sparky grumbled. “A course I can barely remember.”

Ace asked him. “Say something Sparky?”

For a moment Sparky was flustered. He didn't mean to say that out loud. For a moment he fought to find his voice; until he finally said. “I said I'm eager to join all of you.” He smiled nervously, slightly hoping that they would believe his lie.

Thankfully they did. Lancer spoke up. “Hey, he's more fired up than you Bright eyes.” He looked over to her as she rolled her eyes. Sparky looked at her, she had a white coat with an orange mane and tail, she also had the image of a book on her flank. Ace motioned for him to follow. “Come on. We already got some duel area's set up.”

Sparky nodded and followed him to some desks they had pushed together. Everypony gathered around as Teddy got his deck set up. Sparky looked at his deck; all of his creatures had already wished him good luck and they told him it's okay if he loses his first duel. As he sat down he remembered the crystal that he had in his backpack.

He spoke. “Hey, hold on a second.” They looked at him as he reached into his bag. For a moment he rummaged around inside of it for a moment. He found it and exclaimed. “Ah, there it is.” He pulled out the crystal. The moment everypony else saw it; each of them gasped in shock.

He heard them say. “No way. Is that? How did he get one of those?”

He turned around and saw all of them staring at him. He felt nervous again as he asked. “Is something wrong?”

Teddy asked him. “Where did you get a Kaijudo Crystal.”

Sparky answered honestly. “Believe it or not I won it.”

All of them questioned. “Won it?!”

He nodded and explained. “I won this and these cards from the card shop.”

Lancer questioned. “You won?” He trailed off before realizing what their new member meant. His eyes went wide as he asked. “You mean those are the cards from that limited booster box?”

Sparky nodded and all of them began whispering to one another. He wondered if he had just said something wrong. Before he could ask Teddy said. “Sparky, can we see the cards?”

Before he could reply Bon Bon reminded them. “Hold on. You two were about to duel. We'll all get a chance to see the cards.”

A mare with a pink coat and a light blue mane and tail added. “Yeah, Bon Bon's right. Both of you start dueling.”

Sweetheart spoke up. “Melody, they don't even have the crystal activated yet.”

Eventually, the group settled down and Sparky placed the crystal in the center of the duel fields. The crystal started to glow brightly and soon the duel fields became animated. All of them watched in excitement as the fields glowed and shifted. Eventually, they turned into a destroyed village. All of them waited eagerly for the first move.

Teddy smiled as he explained to Sparky. “Okay, since this is your first duel I'll tell you the basics.” He looked down at his deck. “First, we draw until we have five cards in our hands.” Both of them drew their respective hands. After that Teddy continued. “Now, normally, we would have to set our shields up ourselves. But, since you have a Kaijudo crystal.” They looked at the crystal. It started to glow brightly; two beams shot from it and hit their decks. Five cards were taken from their decks; the cards floated in front of them and turned translucent, almost like they were small pieces of glass.

Sparky asked him. “What are these?”

Teddy smiled and answered. “Our shields.” He added. “We get five of them.” He explained. “If your opponent destroys all five of them. They can attack you and if you're attacked the match is over.”

Sparky nodded as he looked at the cards in his hand. He had three spell cards and two of his creatures drawn. He looked at Teddy wondering what his first move would be.

Teddy continued to explain the game. “Okay, I'm going to make the first move.” He selected a card; the card glowed for a moment before turning into a small yellow ball. Sparky stared in awe as the ball hovered over him. There was another ball just above his head; it was larger and it was red.

Sparky asked. “What are those?”

Teddy smiled and pointed at the small ball. “That is your Mana. You need this to summon your monsters.” He then pointed at the other ball. “That is the civilization that I'm using. I specialize in the Fire Civilization.” He added. “There are five civilizations and each one has a different color.” He paused a moment before he said. “But, they can be explained later. Right now, I wanna see what you can do.” He smirked before he pulled a card from his hoof and said. “Thanks to that Mana I just charged. I can summon this monster.” The moment he layed the card down the Mana ball shot to the card. The card glowed bright and a monster emerged from the card. It roared loudly and Teddy introduced his card. “Say hello to Braid Claw.”

Sparky was amazed to see the creature on the card. He wondered what was going to happen next; he also wondered why there were a bunch of Z's coming from the creature. That was when he heard Teddy say. “Alright, it's your turn.”

Sparky replied. “Oh, okay.” He looked at the cards in his hand. He had Scout and Demoman in his hold. But, he didn't have the Mana to summon them. He wondered what he could do.

He heard Scout say. “Hey, Sparky.” He looked at the card and Scout reminded him. “Remember what we told you about those two cards.”

Sparky looked at the spell cards in his hand. They were called Sandwich; he looked at the bottom and read the description. He smiled and said. “I'm going to add this card to my Mana pool.” Teddy nodded at what he said. He didn't call the Mana area, Mana pool. That meant Sparky was reading the description on the card. Good, that meant he was paying attention. What happened next shocked them.

The card didn't become one Mana power; it had become two. A third orb floated in the air above them. It didn't have any of the civilization colors. Instead it was gray and it had an odd symbol inside of it.

Bon Bon commented. “He really does have those cards.”

Scout complimented. “Good. Now, summon me and I'll take care of the rest.”

Sparky nodded and said. “Like you, Teddy. I'm going to use one of the Mana I just charged.” He selected the card and placed it on the field. The ball flew to the card and it glowed brightly. He introduced the card. “Meet my Scout.” All of them watched in awe as the monster appeared on the field. It was a human and it was armed with a bat. None of them could believe it; he really did have them and he was playing the game with them, here in their club.

Sparky added. “He's cool but not as cool as his special ability.” He explained. “The moment Scout is summoned I can draw two cards from my deck.” He drew two cards and a smile stretched across his face. He just drew Heavy.

Scout called up to him. “Hey, don't fugget bout my other ability.”

Sparky nodded and said. “My move is not done yet. I now activate my Scout's secondary ability.” He explained. “By giving up one Mana. My monster can destroy one of your monsters.”

Teddy exclaimed. “Wait, what!?”

They watched as his only other Mana ball entered his monster. Scout's grip on his bat tightened and he charged at Braid Claw. The monster tried to attack him but he dodged. He brought his bat back and delivered a hard blow to the monsters gut. He yelled. “Boink!” He then brought his bat back and delivered another hard blow. This time it was to the monsters chin. He yelled another word. “Bonk!” Scout noticed a rock nearby and ran to it. He used it to springboard himself into the air; with the momentum of his fall, he brought the bat down onto the monsters head. The monster faded into light as Scout walked back to his side. He yawned and layed down on the ground; Z's floated above him.

Teddy asked him. “What was that?” He couldn't believe what he just saw.

Sparky answered. “My Scout's Boink Bonk ability. Like I said it costs me one Mana to use. But, it's worth the price if it means I can get rid of your monster. Unfortunately, it also comes with another price.” He informed him. “My Scout is tapped for two turns.”

Sparky then ended his turn. Teddy thought for a moment. “That was a good move.” He looked at the creature and continued. “So that's the power of those cards. Man, those are cool.” He looked at Sparky and smirked. “But, he's still new to the game. I shouldn't worry too much about him.” He drew his card and smiled.

He spoke. “That was a good move, Sparky. But, I'm afraid I gotta get serious now.” He selected a card and added it to his Mana. He then said. “Now that I have two Mana. I can summon my Immortal Baron!” He placed the monster on the field and the Mana activated it. The monster stood proudly on the battlefield; it had a morning star for one of it's hands.

Teddy admitted. “It's a shame that I can't attack you with a newly summoned monster.” He warned him. “But, come my next turn. Your Scout is history.”

It was now Sparky's turn; he drew his card and looked at his hand. He smiled as he selected a card to add to his Mana. The card he selected was his other Sandwich card. He now had three Mana in his pool. He looked at his hand again and selected another creature to summon.

He said. “Using two of my three Mana. I summon my Demoman.” All of them watched as another one of his creatures was summoned. The creature appeared to be drinking something; which it threw away the moment his glow faded. He released a loud battle-cry as he readied his weapon. Sparky added. “I'm not done. Using the one Mana I have left, I activate this spell.” He selected the card and placed it behind his Scout. He revealed it's name. “Bonk Energy Drink.”

Teddy repeated the name. “Bonk Energy Drink?” He asked him. “What does that do?”

Sparky smirked and answered. “It makes my Scout invincible for the next two turns.”

Teddy couldn't believe what he just heard. He was ready to take that monster out next turn; but, now it was invincible for two whole turns. He smirked again and commented. “You're good.” Sparky ended his turn and Teddy drew his card. He smiled when he saw what he got.

He then said. “Before I add any Mana to my pool. I'm going to take out one of your shields.”

Sparky questioned. “Wait, don't you have to destroy my monsters first?”

Teddy shook his head and explained. “No, I can choose to attack your monsters or destroy one of your shields.” His monster ran forward and destroyed one of Sparky's shields.

Before Teddy could explain another part of the duel; the shield pieces floated down to the field. All of them watched as the pieces came together and glowed brightly. When the glowed dimmed another creature stood on the battlefield. Sparky couldn't believe it, it was his Soldier. How in the world did that get on his field.

Teddy commented. “Dang, you must have good luck today.”

Sparky questioned. “Huh?”

He explained. “That shield I destroyed had a summon trigger.” He asked him. “Remember earlier when we got our shields?” Sparky nodded and he continued. “Well, sometimes monsters and spells with shield triggers are added to the shields. If the shield gets destroyed, if it was a monster with a shield trigger. It's automatically summoned on your field. But, if it was a spell it would automatically be played.”

Before he could continue the soldier appeared to shout something. It was then Sparky's Scout jumped to his feet and readied his bat. Teddy commented. “Oh, that's neat. Looks like your soldier had a summon ability.”

The soldier yelled up at Teddy. “That's right you Maggot! When I step on the field; all of my men are ready for war!”

Sparky was thankful that he was the only one who could hear Soldier. The last thing he needed was to upset somepony he just met. He watched as Teddy added Mana to his pool and then used the three to summon another monster. A monster called Dude Joe; it looked like a robot. It was now Sparky's move again.

He drew his card and looked at his hand; he had three Mana and if he added another; he could summon his Heavy. He studied his hand and selected a spell card to add to the Mana. He then selected his monster and placed it on the field. He said. “I summon Heavy.”

Heavy laughed as he appeared on the card; as he appeared Sparky noticed a strange symbol floating beside his name. He asked. “What's that?”

Teddy informed him. “That, Sparky, tells me you just summoned a Double Breaker.”

Sparky questioned. “Double Breaker?”

Teddy explained. “It's a monster that can break two shields.” He then thought. “Thankfully, he can't use it. But, if I don't take it out soon, I may be in trouble.”

Sparky nodded only to here his Soldier yelled. “I am ready to destroy one of his shields!”

He nodded and said. “I'm going to have my soldier destroy one of your shields.”

Teddy braced himself for the attack. The soldier pulled his RPG and aimed it at the shield. He fired a shot and instantly destroyed one of his shields. The shield didn't fade though; instead it turned into a spell card.

Soldier commented. “Awe.......Hell!”

Teddy exclaimed. “Looks like I just got lucky. That's a shield trigger with a spell called Crimson Hammer.”

Before Sparky could ask him; his Scout erupted into flames. Scout screamed in pain as he was destroyed and sent to the discard pile. Sparky asked. “What happened to my Scout?!”

Teddy answered. “My Crimson Hammer. When activated I can destroy a monster with two thousand points or less.” He smirked before finishing. “Plus, the spell also automatically ends your turn.”

Sparky groaned as he turn came to an end. Teddy drew his card and smiled happily. “Awe, Yeah!” He added Mana to his pool and activated a spell. He said. “I play Shield recovery. This lets me bring back a shield.” He restored his fifth shield and then attacked Sparky with his two monsters. Now Sparky only had two shields; while Teddy still had his five.

As Teddy ended his turn Sparky thought. “What can I do now?”

He heard his soldier answer him. “You keep fighting, Sir!” Sparky looked at him and he continued. “We may have suffered a lose. But, we will not go down without a fight! Remember, the moment your enemy sense that you are unsure, they will know they have already won. So, do not give in to fear.”

Heavy added. “Soldier is right. We still have that play.”

Sparky questioned. “Play, what play?”

Demoman burped loudly before reminding him. “Remember what we told you lad?” He motioned to himself and Heavy. “If you play us just right.”

Sparky gasped as he remembered what his cards had showed him last night. He smiled before he looked up at Teddy; he saw him look at him with a wondering look. He spoke. “You may have taken the lead, Teddy. But, believe me when I tell you. I am about to win this game.” He drew his card and continued. “First, I'm going to attack you with my Heavy.”

Heavy laughed and revved his gun. He then fired a hail of bullets at the shield; destroying two of them easily. Teddy braced himself as the shield fragments flew past him. He thought. “That was good. But, he only has two monsters left. If he attacks me; I'll only have one shield left.” He smirked as he thought smugly. “Sorry, Sparky. But, I'm afraid I win this duel.”

It was then Sparky did something that shocked everypony.

He said. “I activate my Demoman's special ability. Grim Fable.” His monster yelled loudly and before aiming his weapon. Sparky explained. “First I must give up two of my shields.” Both of his shields vanished; leaving him wide open for a monster attack. He then said. “After that my Demoman can destroy either six of your monsters.” He heard gasps all around him; he smirked as he finished. “Or, he can destroy three of your shields.”

Teddy's eyes went wide as he exclaimed. “Three of my shields!”

Demoman fired a shot at his shields; sure enough all three of them were destroyed. Now he was wide open for an attack. Sparky looked down at his Demoman who saluted him before he vanished from the field. Sparky explained. “Since I chose to destroy your shields; my monster gets removed from play. But, his sacrifice will not be for nothing. Because my Soldier has a clear shot at you.”

Teddy cried. “Hey! Hold on! Time out!”

Sparky ordered. “Soldier, win this war!”

The soldier drew his E-tool and released a loud battle-cry. He charged forward at the colt; his form growing in size as he reached his target. Teddy gasped and braced himself for the incoming attack. The soldier swung his weapon and Teddy was knocked out of his chair and onto the floor. Sparky gasped in worry as he looked at Teddy. Did he just hurt him?

Sweetheart called to him. “Teddy!” She got to his side as the Kaijudo field disappeared. She asked him. “Are you okay?”

Teddy groaned. “Ah.” He slowly got up and spoke. “That.” He shot to his hooves and turned around; he had a big smile on his face as he finished. “WAS SO AWESOME!”

After his outburst everypony in the room started talking happily. None of them could believe what they just saw. There was an actual live Kaijudo duel in their club room. A live Kaijudo duel! As the club members talked amongst themselves; Sparky picked up all his cards. His monsters congratulated him on his well earned victory. They even complimented him on his tactic. Even though he really didn't use one.

Sparky gasped as somepony tapped him on his shoulder. He looked an saw Lancer smiling happily at him. He smiled back at him; only to see him hold out a strange looking coin. As he took the coin in his claw he asked. “What's this?” He saw an image of a dragon on the front of the coin. When he turned it over; he gasped. The back of the coin had his name on it.

Lancer explained. “That's a coin made just for you Sparky.” He then pulled a coin of his own out of his backpack. The others did the same as well. He continued. “They may not be league coins. But, they have very special meaning to all of us. It reminds us that if we ever have any problems, if were ever in any kind of trouble, or we just need some emotional support. We can always find each other here.” He smiled happily as he finished. “And, now, that extends to you, Sparky.” He smiled again as he extended his hoof.

Sparky smiled happily and gently shook his hoof. He heard him say. “Welcome to Maretime Bay Dueling Club.”

It was then a few of the fillies started cheering as everypony surrounded Sparky. The young drake smiled happily as Bon Bon asked. “Hey, Sparky, think you're up for another duel?”

Ace complained. “No fair Bon Bon! I wanna duel him next.”

Melody asked. “Do you think that crystal can play music? I swear I thought I heard music coming from it.

Sparky smiled happily as he looked about the room. Maybe being in a club wouldn't be so bad after all. He enjoyed the duel and he liked the ponies around him. Maybe this was what his aunt Sunny kept talking about? What was it again? Is friendship magic?

Teddy suddenly spoke up. “No way! If anypony is dueling him, it's me!”

Sparky laughed happily.
