Chapter Two : Home coming**
The first thing to go through the mayor's mind was “who turned out the lights”. Of course, this was before the situation slowly came rushing back to her. It didn't take long for her to realise something wasn't quite right, it wasn't the fact she couldn't see: no, her brain just hadn't gotten back to restarting that part of the mind yet, it was the fact she was no longer on the cold wet floor that she fainted on, after all the last thing she remembered was a giant hound looming ever closer.
A squeak echoed through the nearly empty room as an excited bundle of spines noticed the rousing mayor, alerting both Jake and Clumpy to the slowly waking mare who currently resided on the sofa. The squeaking resulted in opposite effects from the two other occupants in the room, from Jake's reaction from his location curled up in-front of the blazing fire, who's action of swiftly raised his front legs and put the over his ears with a groan mirrored with those actions of Clumpy, who hovered over to the stove, before carefully lifting a pan carefully off with his mouth before pouring its (lactose-free) milky contents into 3 bowls prior to swiftly placing one of on the floor and depositing the pan into the sink with a soft thud.
These actions quickly resulted in another round of squeaking from the tiny hog as he lowered his snout greedily into the warm milk within his bowl while Clumpy carried the other two over to the slowly waking mare all the while careful not to spill the warm drink over the floor.
It wasn't much longer before the mayor opened her eyes and took note of her surroundings. The first thing she noticed was that she was no longer at the town hall, but in a building with a much lower roof, the second thing she noticed was the dark brown beams and the lime washed wattle and daub walls. Sitting up she noticed a large dark bundle laying in front of the a large fireplace centred in the middle of the room on the opposite side of her current location on what she noticed had been a large 3 cushioned sofa.
Clumpy softly lowered the tray with a soft tap onto a small table next to the sofa swiftly bringing mayor mare out of her stupor and her attention onto the blue unicorn.
With a worried expression he gestured to the bowl beside the mayor before grasping the other one within his hooves, bringing it upto his muzzle and sniffing deeply before blowing and taking a sip.
It didn't take long for the mayor to get the hint and she quickly devoured her own bowl with gusto, relishing the warmth seeping down into her stomach before she realised she had spilt some down her muzzle which resulted in a hoof full of giggles coming from the pony sitting across from her on the floor and a soft blush spreading across her elderly features out of simple embarrisment, after all she was the mayor of ponyville, not a school filly!
"Thank you" she said after catching her breath and clumpy had stopped his foalish giggling, which only resulted in a kind smile from his milk stained muzzle leaving the room with a happy atmosphere
This was before she heard someone talking.
"He was quite worried you know"
"I'm sorry, what?" she quickly responded looking around for the disembodied voice before noticing the large golden eyes staring at her from across the fire.
"I said he was quite worried about you, after all you were out for an hour before we managed to get you in here and dried off." grumbled Jake staring at her, before standing up stretching out and walking around the fire towards her. "Oh, and please no more screaming, it really hurts my ears"
Watching the events go on between the Mayor and Jake left Clumpy with a slight sigh at Jake revealing he was worried, but he knew that honestly despite being shy, his inability to talk to any pony and severe dislike of crowds he liked to help ponies and that for everything he lacked his friends would be there to help, even if one happened to be a rather large long haired furry embarrassing grump, or a rather small ball of spines who had a thing for (lactose-free) milk and a habit of eating all the honey, but despite these things he loved them all dearly and any faults he had were easily and willing counter balanced with their help.
While all this was going through Clumpy's mind he didn't notice the Tomas scurry up to Jake and with a mixture of squeaks and grunts to interrupt the now-friendly conversation between the two talkers, for the message he was to convey was something of which every pony seemed to have forgotten, time moves forward more importantly it was almost midnight.
"Well my dears," the mayor quickly stated while standing up and stretching her back, "I think its about time i go, and i thank you for your help you two... no three isn't it" she finished looking down at the little hog squeaking at her front hooves, "thank you for your assistance and..." she looked at Jake with a sad smile "I'm sorry for screaming and fainting Mr Jake, and again thank you for your assistance!"
"It's fine, unfortunately it happens all the time," he replied with his wolfish grin while walking her to the door with clumpy following at his side with a concerned look on his face as he looked out the window at the rain soaked streets, this seemingly thought seemingly passed onto Jake as his face swiftly dropped into a concerned frown mirroring Clumpy's.
"Are you going to be all right walking home in this?" he asked with concern layered in his voice
With a quick glance out the window and a reassuring smile upon her face "I'm sure my dear, after all i've been through far worse than a bit of rain in the past few years" she finished with a wink that un-became her normally offical air she carried around.
She walked out the door before quickly turning back to face the still worried looking unicorn. "Thank you again, and if you need anything just ask and ill see what I can do for you," she finished with a smile, before quickly galloping down the mud stained street.
Clumpy was left standing in the doorway, following the direction the mayor went with a look of concern still plasted over his, this was until a sign was heard and a large furry paw resting on his shoulder accompanied by that "look" only a parent can give, one which says "okay time for bed and no arguments".
With a final sign Clumpy closed the door, turning around and with microscopic spark from his horn the lights flicked off while as he went to bed.
It didn't take long for Clumpy to fall asleep that night and seemingly even quicker before a mixture of snuffling and squeaks woke him up from his slumber. After crawling out of his sleeping bag and stretching with a groan which would've made a ship proud he quickly nuzzled the ball of spines which had woken him. Leaving his place of sleep with he walked onto the balcony which over looked the front door which to his surprise was open and several moving ponies were bringing in boxes, which brought a confused look to his face because he never was much of a heavy sleeper, but "oh well" he thought with an awkward shrug only "boring blue ponies" can do.
The only things going through Tomas' mind at the moment was "snuffle snuffle squeeak snuffle squee" which translated to pony would roughly be "I am the hedgehog that says SQUEEEE and we demand a.... SHRUBBERY!" ... no seriously it was! What do you mean that's not what it says? Who are you to say what i put into this fiction?! Fine buck you too!... oh erm... sorry where was i? Oh yes! "SHRUBBERY!!!!!!"
It didn't take long before the 4th wall recreated its self and the narrator to stop interfering with the story, which resulted in a particularly magic-sensitive-grumpy Jake to roll his eyes with a sigh as he walked into the house helping one participially large yellow earth pony carry several stacked IKEA boxes, before popping out for another box clumpy trotted up to him and waved before joining him and the other ponies shifting boxes of goods and one particularly large tank into the room, with the help of 3 earth ponies, 2 unicorns and Jake the shifting off the goods took a few hours to move from the large cart out side into his new residence although the bright sun and "morning after rain" smell helped alleviate the stress caused by the positioning of the large boiling tank, as cramped conditions and weight forced the quickly led the ponies involved to become irritated with the job, but were rewarded with several additional bits added into their hooves as they left, leaving Clumpy with boxes littering the main room of his house.
Standing between the double doors which made up the main entrance to his house, Clumpy surveyed what he had in front of him with a smile. To his right off set from the main room was the kitchen, with an open layout to the house the only thing cutting it off from the main room was the long counter which almost circled the area, straight in front of him was the central fire and several couches around which we're already there when he unlocked the door the previous night, he knew who put them there but he still didn't understand when she winked and told him it was a "just in case" thing, this memory still confused him as to what she meant but he looked past that to the back of the room with its 3 doors leading off, two were spare bedrooms and the other was the bathroom, above that was a balcony with stairs on the left which lead to the master bedroom and finally to the left of the main room was a long corridor which formally had several rooms to the side but they were knocked through to make it into a giant work area leaving one small corner where the corridor finished, also located in this area was a large dumb waiter and a ramp into the basement.
With a sigh and noticing Jake has quickly vacated the area once all the stuff was in from the cart Clumpy quickly set about opening boxes with a snuffling little Tomas exploring the new mess cause by the move. Constructing the shelving didn't take long despite the poorly written griffon instructions but when it came to the moving the beds to their respective rooms he gave up doing things the earth-pony way with a sigh. Checking to see if any pony was around he nervously levitated the beds to their respective rooms, that is after a face-hoof of realisation that constructed beds tend not to fit through doorways which resulted in a lot of sarcastic whistling from the Tomas as he climbed on top of the empty boxes, another sigh and a hoof to the face later the only thought that went through Clumpy's head was "this is going to be a long day."
He was running, he was fast, the air was running through his fur as he sprinted towards the large looming forest in front of him, he felt bad for leaving Clump with the unpacking but he had to do this, it was in his nature, it was his nature, the hunt the, the prey, unfortunately most ponies didn't understand, they wouldn't understand, they couldn't understand, they were only prey stuck in there own ways to be bothered to understand someone else's, herbivores through and through, never knowing what it was like, the chase the feeling of meat grinding between teeth and the feeling of hot blood flow down the throat, he had to do it, to obey his instincts, but never to get lost within them for that was spelt doom and more than a few of his race had been lost to such instinctive pleasures never to return from the path of the wolf, but the same was opposite, to repress such instincts and the focus ones self had caused the mutation of his specie into that of the diamond dog, a shudder went down his spine as this thought past through his mind before quickly catching the delicious mouth watering scent, it was in front of him, today the hunter shall become the prey.
The last thing the timber wolf saw was a pair of golden eyes before his neck was swiftly snapped.
Several hours had passed and most of the work had been done as Jake walked through the doors. He noticed the shelving was up and full of books ranging from science fiction novels to fantasy, DIY guides to technical reference books for a range of engineering tasks, from electrical theory to fluid mechanics. Also adjoining the walls were glass cabinets displaying carefully painted miniatures and lovingly taken care off pictures. After browsing through them he noticed with a smile that one was missing from the collection, he knew where it would be but before he tested his theory he had another look around the room. Behind him against the doors were piles of packaging with a note stuck to the wall about recycling dates. Down towards the room at the far end several boxes stood Jake's own mementos, not a lot but still enough to take up boxes of their own. Down the corridor to the brewing room stood the barrels, a small smile came to his lips as his face winced at its contents but he quickly moved on.
He crept silently towards towards and up the stairs at the end of the room, opening the door slightly to check on Clumpy he noticed with a satisfied smile that he was right about the picture as from across room from within the curled up ponies hooves was the picture held in a delicately spun silver frame. A picture taken not long after he gotten his cutie mark. With a smile and thanking the gods for soft padded feet rather than solid hooves of a pony he snuck over to Clumpy. And with great care lifting the picture from his hooves and placing it down on the bed side cabinet softly before pulling the soft brown and cream quilt up and over the sleeping unicorn.
Just as quietly as the previous tasks he turned around leaving the sleeping unicorn to his gentle slumber, and with a final glance over his shoulder he softly whispered "good night little one, sleep well my little pony." with a fatherly smile splitting his face in two, after all he was the closest thing he had to a son any more and he wouldn't give him up for anyone pony, griffon, dog or shifter...
Little did he notice that one blue eye was watching him leave the room with a happy foalish smile to match the old dogs.
