Caldeum: Chasing the Coven

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

It took them some time to reach Gea Kul, the port town that would bring them to Caldeum in no time, and Tyrael watched over the carriages as they were pulled off the ship that brought them across the sea, so while he did that Leah and Luna bought plenty of waterskins. The reason for that was due to the fact that they were heading into the desert and there was no reasonable way to restore their water supply, not unless they found a river or an oasis, so they tracked down a vendor and bought enough for everyone. After that it wasn't long before Tyrael had them depart for the north, as there were contacts he had, likely potential Horadrim hopefuls, who told him about a hidden camp that overlooked Caldeum, an area they could set up their base of operations in. Luna helped him track down the exact location it was resting in, flying ahead before reporting back what she had discovered so the former angel could follow the landmarks, and soon it wasn't long before they found the area that seemed to be a cliff area that allowed them to look out over the city.

To go one step forward Luna even carved three rune stones, magical artifacts that housed a single spell, and set them up in a triangle pattern around the camp, deploying a barrier around the area that was large enough to make sure everything was hidden from view, and sure made sure to power them with enough magic to last a long time.

"It seems that there are more people here than we thought." Leah commented, as there were a few merchants and even a few nobles in the hidden camp, but upon noticing the group both groups accepted them as the owners of this place and just fell in with them, as some had skills that Luna knew would be useful, like those who shaped wood or manipulated other types of materials, meaning they could improve their camp and do other things, "Uncle Deckard loved Caldeum... but we have work to do."

"Yes, we do. Belial is definitely here, I can smell his stench on the wind." Tyrael said, because he had fought the Lord of Hell, all of them, likely a magnitude of times since both sides were born and likely had a good understanding of what to feel so he could track one of them, which was good news for Luna as she, Leah, plus Kormac and Lyndon got ready to move, "Where are you going?"

"We're dividing our forces: you will search for Belial, the others will help the people of the city as best they can, and we will go murder Maghda." Luna stated, as she wasn't going to sugarcoat what her group was doing, they were going to crush both the witch and her Coven for what they did to Cain, New Tristram, and the surrounding area, and then her group was going to come back and deal with the Lord of Hell, "Once we're done, well, then we'll come back and help you with Belial."

Tyrael looked at the group of four for a moment and knew that there was no stopping them, they were dead set on hunting Belial's follower and the dark Coven she was in control of, to which he nodded and the trio followed Luna down the side path that brought them into the outskirts of Caldeum. Upon entering the city proper, or at least the outskirts, the group found a group of refuges that seemed on their way out of the city, where a red armored lady noticed them and stopped them for just a few seconds, allowing them to find out that she was Asheara of the Iron Wolves, their Commander. Apparently she was the one in charge of the organization and they had rescued the group from the Coven, who were rampaging in an area called the Borderlands, giving them an area to hunt for their target. Their target was located in a place called Alcarnus, but they would have to go through Khasim Outpost to get to it since the main road was blocked, causing Luna to nod her head as the lady pointed out exactly where they were supposed to go, and even ordered the eastern gate for them to depart.

As they departed from Caldeum, however, the group found a lady standing on the road, a sorceress of some sort, though her attire looked more revealing and more suited for the desert, and she carried a staff in one hand, though when she saw them she walked up to them.

"Take heed, travelers, the Coven's cultists guard these roads and will..." the lady said, though at the same time there was a sound as a number of cultists appeared further down the path, where Leah and Lyndon silenced a few with head shots, all while Luna and Kormac silenced the rest with some swings of their weapons, causing the lady to stand there in shock, "Oh, I was going to say 'kill all trespassers', but you seem to have everything under control. May I join you? I can locate things that are hidden from view, and might be able to help you track the Coven."

Luna found that the lady, Eirena they learned, was true to her word as she used her staff and magic to undo the rock wall that was down at the end of the path, revealing more of the path for them to use, to which Luna took the lead as they fought some new enemies, poisonous wasps that shot poison from their tails. The other one was more impressive, the panther-like lacuni, ferocious wild creatures that definitely had some intelligence to them, where the females were more lithe and fast while the males were bulky and more powerful looking, but their strength wasn't to be underestimated. Luna found that the stronger ones really put forth some effort to crush them into dust, yet they were unable to dent the Ashbringer, rather she was able to slash through their bone armor with ease, while the others dealt with the rest of the enemies that were in the rocky area they were passing through. Eirena continued to prove her worth as she fought their foes as well, casting magic at them while using her power to shatter the mirages that the Coven had cast on the area to fool whoever was following them, allowing them to move out into the open sandy area that had to be the Borderlands.

This was where their new friend truly shined, she was able to utilize her power to undo the magic hiding the track that they needed to follow, where she told them that they were looking for two cellars that the cultists were hiding in, causing Luna to face her for a moment as she studied the spell.

"Here, let me empower your spell." Luna said, holding out a hand for Eirena to take, where the enchantress, she told them that she wasn't a sorceress, took her hand and found that she wasn't kidding, the alicorn magic empowered her spell for just a few seconds and she was able to use it to cover a far wider area, revealing the entire path, "Well then, let the hunt begin."

Eirena found that Luna wasn't kidding, the strange figure followed the path that was in front of them without missing even a single beat, as if she wasn't even winded from using that much power, and it made her wonder who Luna was and how she came to have this much power in the first place. While they followed the trail Luna and Kormac left a trail of bodies in their wake, while Leah had Lyndon and Eirena join her in taking out the ranged enemies, which was when Eirena found that the tailed girl was using a bow made of fire, as in literal fire, while her arrows were the same. Of course that wasn't the only thing she discovered, rather Leah forced herself to wield the other elements that Luna had taught her, turning the bow into one of wind and striking her targets like a huntress in the wild, though she was still struggling with the other elements. Luna made sure that Leah knew she was doing well, there was a lot to learn about magic and Leah was a wonderful student, she just needed time to figure out how to master the art of calling on the other elements.

With Luna and Eirena's combined magical power they were able to permanently unveil the trail, tracked down both cellars that the cultists were hiding in, and slaughtered Maghda's followers before they could defend themselves, they deserved as such in Luna's eyes, and Luna even agreed as she butchered one with her sword. This was revenge for everyone that the Coven had slain and used in the past, that they suffer in some manner when their end came, and Luna could see how each death quelled some of the inferno that was in Leah's heart, allowing her to find some peace with her uncle's death. She also knew that this wouldn't fully quell her anger, not while Maghda walked this world, and Luna was determined to hunt down the witch and execute her for her crimes, not to mention the Lord of Hell that she served. Of course she did have to tell their new ally why everyone was so angry with the Coven, but in the end Eirena understood that they were here for vengeance and joined them without delay, as she understood that this would free the land from the Coven's influence.

After dealing with the two cellars, and breaking whatever magic the Coven had been using, Eirena brought them to what looked like a damaged bridge and restored it with her magic, breaking the mirage, allowing them to cross and head into the small area known as Khasim Outpost, which made sense due to it being near a wide chasm.

It was then that they found that the guards and people of the outpost were actually serpent demons, servants of Belial most likely, who looked like they were mages of some kind, though the group wasted no time in slaughtering them, Luna used her magic to shield them while the others killed the surprised demons. Following that Kormac found the real residents of this outpost in one of the cellars, trapped in cages, and they freed them without delay, allowing the few Iron Wolves to return to their duties while the group headed out through the outpost's eastern gate. On the other side Luna, Leah, and the others found that there were more cultists and the dark warriors out in the Borderlands, guarding the way to Alcarnus no doubt, to which the group rushed at their enemies without wasting time. It was like a battlefield of sorts as Leah and Lyndon opened fire on all of the cultists that were in their line of sight, elemental arrows and bolts rushing into the hearts of their foes, while Kormac stabbed and based the melee enemies, Eirena blasted her foes, and Luna bisected the larger demons that were sent to stop them.

Fortunately it was easy for them to track down the path to the dark city or town that was called Alcarnus, and Luna opened the way by butchering the tall demon that was in her way, scattering it's limbs as she landed, causing the cultists to shout at the others in the town, a warning that intruders were here.

"Slaughter them. Leave none of them alive." Luna stated, rushing forward as she swung the Ashbringer through her targets, cutting down the cultists that dared to stand in her way while hacking apart the demons that were summoned to fight them, just more of the dark warriors based on what she was seeing.

Leah and the others joined her, the five of them turning the tide against the Coven, though she also made sure to save the people that were trapped inside the cages that lined the street, though Maghda's forces really didn't offer much as they cut through them and centered the core of the town, an arena that the witch was floating in.

"Leah, this is a surprise. I expected you to be hunting my master, so his guard could capture you and harness your power for his grand schemes." Maghda commented, as this wasn't part of the plan, she expected the little witch, whatever she was, to be too focused on the Lord of Hell and not on someone like her, though at the same time Luna flashed behind her and just slammed a spell into her back, silencing her magic as she fell into a magical prison block, her head and hands on one side of the wooden block, "What the?"

"Maghda, for your various crimes, I won't give you the dignity of defending yourself." Luna replied, where she positioned herself near the executioner's block, as that was what this was going to be, as she held the Ashbringer at the ready, as once Leah gave the word Luna was going to behead the witch so they could focus on Belial, "Is there anything you would like to say, Maghda, before we put you down?"

"Wait just a moment... Leah, I speak the truth: your mother, Adria, is alive and is somewhere in Caldeum. That much I know for certain." Maghda stated, as if that would be enough to convince Leah to have her life spared, that her information would save her life so she could no doubt betray them at some point in the near future, causing the group to glance at Leah for a few seconds.

"Even if you speak the truth, I can't let you live: you brought about uncle Deckard's death, and so deserve death." Leah said, where it was clear that there was a hint of anger in her voice, since it was Maghda's scheming that brought about the death of Leah's uncle and the deaths of who knew how many other people before they even realized she existed, causing her to just nod to Luna for a moment, "Do it."

Luna nodded and brought the Ashbringer down as Maghda cried out for them to stop, where the weapon severed her head and hands with ease, though once the body was on the ground Leah used her magic and set Maghda's lifeless body on fire, just to be absolutely sure she was gone, and once she was nothing but ash Luna hugged Leah before opening a portal back to the camp so they could rest and plan out what their next move should be.
