Bastion's Keep: Salvation has Arrived

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

True to Kulle's statement the group found that there was a gate in the Greathall that would bring them to the edge of the area that Bastion's Keep was located in, an area known as the Dreadlands, and when they used it Luna found that the whole caravan was warped to an area to the south of the keep. With that in mind they continued to the north as Kulle retreated to the Greathall and to the Loom, no doubt to put the finishing touches on his part of things, while Luna flew ahead to see what sort of chaos they were dealing with. In that moment she found a large army of demons marching south from Arreat Crater, where a demonic citadel or command center was resting in the core of the crater, which was where Azmodan was waiting, she could practically feel him from here. Bastion's Keep was large and prepared to deal with other assaults, but clearly the army of demons was making them reconsider their options, or even their ability to survive this ordeal, especially since she could see all sorts of siege weapons being made on the demon's side.

With that in mind she returned to the others and they moved the caravan through the south gate, allowing them to make their way to the center of Bastion's Keep, where most of the soldiers were gathering with some protecting the innocents that had come here for safety, while Luna and Leah joined Tyrael on one of the watchtowers.

"Azmodan has definitely shattered his Gate... there are too many demons here for him to have just left it open." Tyrael said, as this confirmed a fear he had been having since Leah uncovered where their foe would be attacking them from, that the Lord of Sin was bringing everything he had in his domain to attack the defenders of Sanctuary, "Thanks to Kulle's actions we arrived before the main portion of his assault force has reached the walls, but they'll be here in no time... we must light the braziers and let the defenders know that salvation has arrived."

"Before that, I have something to do." Luna stated, where she gathered her magic for a moment before placing her hands on the stones below her, causing Tyrael and Leah to watch as her power spilled over the walls and fortifications of Bastion's Keep, as in all of it as Leah observed it happen, like a shimmering wall that rested in front of the keep, before she let out a breath as she stood up, "There, area secure."

"Do I want to know?" Tyrael inquired, because when it came to the alicorn he had realized that trying to understand them was a difficult task, as Luna's magical power was far more than he had assumed and knew she had more hidden away in her reserves, especially since she didn't look winded in the slightest.

"She used her magic to place a barrier on the walls of the keep and below the structure... like a bowl." Leah said, as she took her magical studies seriously and knew what Luna had done by just watching her, even though it was staggering to see her use that much magic and not be worried in the slightest, "Looks like the only way for a demon to enter is by coming over the barrier... interestingly enough this also means our siege weapons can be used against Azmodan's forces."

"Indeed, meaning we must spread word to the soldiers of the keep, while Kormac and the others lead the defenses in doing what they can to hold the demons back." Luna remarked, though at the same time she glanced out at the horde of demons that were coming towards the keep, confirming that Kulle's method had allowed them to get here before Azmodan's forces had a chance to get into position, before she glanced at Leah for a moment, "Leah, darling, shall we get started?"

Leah nodded for a moment as she raised her hand, summoning her magical bow once more, before readying one of her flaming arrows, where Tyrael watched as she pulled the flaming string back before loosing the arrow into the air, almost as if she was setting off a beacon of sorts. In the next moment he was proven wrong as the arrow burst into a volley before they rained down on the demons, striking her targets in the head and knocking them down without delay, and yet he could see that none of them got back up. Despite having seen her and Luna fight previously Tyrael was still surprised by her control over her power, even if it was demonic to a degree, something that made him wonder how skilled she might be in the near future, once they were done with the Lords of Hell and brought peace to Sanctuary. As that happened he could see that the soldiers guarding the walls of Bastion's Keep were surprised by the sudden assault on the incoming demons and seemed to be confused as to what was even going on right now, which was understandable given what was going on.

In the following seconds Luna took to the air and spread her wings, allowing her to basically float there as she looked out at the demonic host that was marching towards the keep, full of warrior demons, flying scavengers, the small fallen, a number of dervish demons, demonic worms that doubled as siege beasts, and many others.

"Soldiers of Bastion's Keep, hear me: the last Lord of Hell seeks to take your lives and destroy your homes, but we are here to stand in defiance to his wishes, and we are backed by Tyrael himself!" Luna shouted, her voice echoing all over the keep, a fact that caused Tyrael to hear that people were starting to chat his name as the soldiers seemed to understand that this was a battle for the fate of their home and for Hell itself, "Man the battlements and turn our siege weapons on the demons, while keeping the demons from entering the keep! For Sanctuary!"

Tyrael found that this was a rallying cry for the people of Bastion's Keep, they understood that Luna's usage of 'last Lord of Hell' meant six of the seven Evils were dead and that killing Azmodan meant no more problems in the future, causing them to set fire to the various braziers around the keep's walls. Sure enough he found that the siege worm demons tried to attack the walls and failed, they bounced off the barrier that Luna had set up and she just smiled as she saw it, especially since one fell back before spewing demons out of it's mouth, indicating that it was good to stop them from reaching the top of the walls. While that happened he also discovered that the soldiers started to turn the cranks all over the walls, raising their own siege weapons up out of the keep so they could be turned on the demonic army, where the fact that he was present was just a boost for them, a kick in the rear to get them started. In addition to that the ranged soldiers focused on ballista and other ranged weapons that existed on the walls, taking aim at the demons while all of the archers rained death on the flying foes that were coming at them, something that caused him to chuckle for a few seconds.

He had assumed that things were going to be bleak and full of despair, that they were going to arrive in the middle of the demons' assault on the keep, and yet he couldn't be further from the truth, Kulle had gotten them here before Azmodan had a chance to start the assault while Luna had provided them with the means to hold the demons back.

"She's right. Salvation has arrived!" Tyrael said, readying his sword for a moment as he realized that it was time to kill more demons, this time potentially opening the way for the total destabilization of Hell once the Evils were finally destroyed, to which he nodded to Leah for a moment before the girl paused, pointing out at an area that was to the right of the keep, as Kulle was floating there, "Come on, Kulle, uphold your end of things."

"Awaken my construct army, and tear down the forces of Hell!" Kulle stated, where they found that he amplified his voice so that everyone could hear him speak, though the area behind him shook for a moment before a number of large gates, like the ones from his Archives, opened behind him as the mage stood at the ready.

Tyrael knew that Kulle had been busy building a new army of constructs and outfitting the ones that were still active, but the sheer amount of them was stunning since it looked like a second army was marching out of the portals, metallic spiders, wasps, and literally every type of demon they had seen, all made of metal. There were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of constructs emerging from the portals, especially when he laid eyes on Malphas' new form, the fearsome form that was like a demon despite being a form that the lacuni of Nahantu could take on. In addition to that there were a group of constructs that were different from the others, one seemed like a heavily armored knight, another a skinny magical being, another was a large figure that seemed to be an icy beast with a greatsword and wings, and the fourth was a elemental type creature that had the power of fire. They were like generals, making five when he considered Malphas, and once the army was in position Kulle sent the constructs down into the side of the demonic army, where he and the others watched as they tore through their foes and blasted the demons with their elemental powers.

As Tyrael watched this, and came to terms with the fact that Kulle really was on Sanctuary's side and that it had been wrong for the Horadrim to put him down, Luna picked up Leah and him before flying them down to the front lines, allowing him to join Kormac and the others in defending the main gate while she and Leah moved forward.

"Azmodan will no doubt be worried about his chances, given our combined forces." Leah commented, though she did have to worry that the last Lord of Hell might try to open the other six Gates from his side, to spread the full might of Hell around the rest of Sanctuary to divide their forces, or maybe bring them together in the crater, meaning they had to be fast before something terrible happened, before the ground shook, "And it looks like one of the big guns is coming to us."

"I am Ghom, Lord of Gluttony!" the incoming demon stated, where they found that it was larger than even Azmodan, Leah could tell that sort of thing since she had seen the Lord of Sin in her vision, where the demon had a mouth in the middle of his stomach and likely had a few more they couldn't see, plus he had a fat figure and seemed to be eager to feast on those who had been slain, "And you two shall be my first appetizers!"

"Right, Azmodan was said to have six 'Sin Lieutenants': Ghom for Gluttony, Cydaea for Lust, Vidian for Envy, Bholen for Sloth, Greed for Greed, and Zaboul for Wrath... he, himself, was Pride." Luna remarked, as she had read about the information that Deckard had on all of the Evils and their forces, because each one had their own set of Lieutenants, or whatever they called their main followers, and Azmodan, being the leader of his forces, was Pride itself, but if she was being honest she was more interested in the Lord of Wrath, not Gluttony, "Leah, you may fire when ready."

Leah nodded as she raised her bow, which was when Ghom noticed that she had already formed an arrow and readied it as they were talking, and she loosed it before the demon had a chance to move out of the way, allowing the flaming arrow to pierce his chest without delay as it left a smouldering hole, causing the demon to collapse.

"One sin down, six more to go... honestly, I'm hoping for something tougher." Leah said, because she had also grown to be a good warrior and sometimes she acted a lot like Luna, wanting a better challenger while holding back from time to time so things weren't too easy, before she sighed as she focused on the army that was in front of them, "Let's do this."

Luna nodded as she and Leah stepped forward, ready to brave the dangers of the Dreadlands and the demonic army that stood between them and the Lord of Sin, because it was time to put an end to the Lords of Hell, and Luna was looking forward to the fights to come.
