Bastion's Keep: Breaking the Siege

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

As soon as Luna and Leah stepped out into the demon infested portion of the Dreadlands, where Azmodan's forces were clearly readying siege weapons while more were on their way out of where his shattered Gate had once rested, they found that the demons were upon them. Luna, again, took on the role of tank as she swung Ashbringer around and slashed her way through the foul demonic warriors that were coming their way, doing what she could to dodge attacks while keeping herself safe, since there was no telling with the demons. At the same time Leah continued to provide support as she used her bow and loosed elemental arrows at her targets, making sure to blow up groups of demons before they got close while also using seemingly normal projectiles to eliminate those that Luna missed, which wasn't very often. It was clear, to those that knew them, that their training allowed them to work like a team, knowing how each moved and when to cover for the other, plus the constant growth Leah showcased meant she was able to tackle more and more foes at a time.

Such a thing caused Luna to chuckle as she swung her weapon around and took down another demon by removing it's head before it could react, before lobbing a ball of magic into the heart of another group and blinded them a little, opening the way for Leah to loose a volley into their chests.

"What's so funny?" Leah asked, stopping by Luna's side as she loosed another pair of basic magical arrows into the chest of a demon that was coming their way, dropping it to the ground as Luna blasted a trio of flying demons with her magic, which was another reason why they worked so well together, they were always keeping each other safe.

"Nothing, just... I'm proud of how far you've come, in such a short period of time." Luna replied, which was the truth, Leah's growth made her a formidable warrior in her own right and she was sure that she would be able to fully master her powers in no time, though in the following moments a beam of fire energy tore through several demons to their right, coming from the direction of Bastion's Keep.

"The Nephalem have arrived." Valla stated, loosing some of her seeker bolts into the air as they slammed into the heads of several demons, tore through them, and then snaked over to one of the other ones, while at the same time Li-Ming froze a few more of their enemies as Sonya smashed through them with her battleaxe, "I know you two wanted to be alone, but we figured that we'd even the odds: eight Nephalem, the seven of us and Leah, plus an all powerful alicorn, against an endless army of demons from Hell."

"Kormac and the others are defending the Keep, under my orders." another voice said, where they found Tyrael walking up to them, though he parried an incoming blow from another demon before splitting it in half, reminding them that he was still a great warrior, even in his mortal form, before he looked at the demon infested field that rested between their location and where Azmodan was hiding, "I failed to kill Azmodan once, I will not make that mistake again."

"Okay, then our first order of business is to destroy the siege engines the demons are creating... I'm counting three large ballistae and a single massive trebuchet." Luna remarked, though at the same time she found that everyone was serious, as in they were willing to sacrifice themselves to secure the safety of Sanctuary, but right now this was war and she wasn't going to tell them to stand down, especially since there wasn't much for them to do with Kulle's army fighting near the north gate of the Keep, "Once their weapons are dealt with we can cross the great bridge and reach the edge of Azmodan's area, which will allow us to invade Hell at long last."

The group nodded without delay as they charged after her, magic and voodoo flaying into the faces of the demons in front of them as everyone separated into three groups, three were heading for the ballista off to the east, three were headed for the one to the north of them, and three were targeting the one to the west. This left Luna as the odd one out, which was fine with her since that meant she could take to the air and weave her magic into magical shields that she intended on using to block the incoming attacks, to give the others enough time to break the siege weapons. Sure enough she found that many of the demons were focused on the Nephalem, all of them, and yet it gave her a good view of their abilities since she hadn't fought by their side much, Luna had essentially forgotten about them for the most part. Valla was excellent in sniping each of her targets in the head and using the shadows to hurt her foes, Sonya just ripped and tore through the gore, Li-Ming used fire and ice to destroy those that got near while lightning was reserved for others, while Nazeebo, Johanna, and Khazarim tore through their foes with voodoo, fists, and the light.

Kara, the necromancer, used her necromancy to raise the fallen into serving her, though it was hard to see if they were those who had been slain recently or the ancient dead, maybe it was a combination of both, but that really didn't matter much as the undead tore through their foes as she wounded her enemies with bone magic.

With their powers combined with Tyrael's might and Leah's potential, plus Luna's own, it wasn't long before the first group tore down the ballista they were fighting towards, shattering the metallic structure and causing it to fall on some demons in the process, crushing those unfortunate enough to be there in the process. As that happened Luna swung her shield around and blocked another volley from the remaining siege weapons, as she could see the demons now gathering around them to protect them from the invading force, a small group that the demons weren't ready for. She simply smiled as the eastern group tore through all of the demons that were in their way and shattered their ballista as if it didn't matter in the slightest, once more demonstrating just how strong a single Nephalem was, even if this was a watered down version, and multiple Nephalem were just making short work of their enemies. The northern group wasted no time in following the lead of their allies, crushing and obliterating the third siege weapon before it could be used against Bastion's Keep, and once they were all done with their duties Luna pulled her magic into a spear and hurled it at the trebuchet, blasting it into oblivion before the demons could use it again.

"It would seem that I was mistaken in believing that only a single Nephalem had awakened during this time of crisis." Tyrael remarked, as he had been sure that Leah was the only one, she certainly seemed like it when he observed her training with Luna, and Luna herself was a special case, but after fighting beside the group for a short while he was starting to see that there were far more Nephalem than he initially realized, before noticing that more demons were gathering, "Well then, shall we continue our battle?"

"Of course. We have a Lord of Hell to slay, after all." Luna stated, though in the following moments she found two powerful demons marching towards them, or rather one seemed to be marching and one seemed to be focused on hanging off one of the support structures for the bridge that connected to the edge of where Azmodan's Gate had been resting, "Looks like we've got Bholen and Zaboul coming our way."

Bholen was like a demonic sloth, which was why he had been picked to be the Sin Lieutenant of Sloth, while Zaboul was far taller and more imposing, he was almost as tall as Ghom, was decked out in powerful demonic armor that was a mix of red colors and what could be bronze, and carried a battleaxe that looked like a demonic butchers cleaver. Luna grinned as she stepped forward, leaving Bholen to the others since he seemed like a boring foe, where she spun Ashbringer for a couple of seconds before lashing out at the large demon, who swung his weapon down at her and the two collided in the space that was between them. The collision of their weapons and energies caused the air and ground to shake instantly, where Luna let the smile remain on her face as she realized that the Lord of Wrath was definitely stronger than Ghom had been before Leah took him out, and she could feel the wrath radiating from his battleaxe. Luna and Zaboul clashed with each other again and again, their blades colliding with each other over and over again, while at the same time Leah wounded Bholen so the others could cut him down, totally ignoring the aura of slowness he cast on them, where she nodded and let them start across the bridge that was their destination.

Following that she and the demon started to move around the battlefield, their weapons clashing with each other as both of their energies collided, causing the ground to shake and crack while they danced, because this reminded her of the Butcher a little, only she was able to enjoy having a tougher opponent. It wasn't long before they were fighting on the edge of the chasm that the bridge had been built to cross, where Luna could see that there was a horde of demons marching across it, a fact she wasn't even surprised by, nor did she have to worry about it since Leah and her companions were tearing through all of their enemies. Her focus was on Zaboul, who wasn't even saying anything despite the smile that was on his face right now, he was enjoying the fight as well, and while he might be frustrated that Ashbringer was holding it's own against his own weapon, it wasn't even nicked in the slightest, that was overshadowed by facing a skilled opponent. They even crashed into a part of the bridge that Leah's group had passed through previously, where Luna shifted her stance and pushed the battleaxe back before slashing open the demon's chest, something that caused Zaboul to smile as he fell to his knees.

"You... were a worthy challenger. I look forward to facing you again." Zaboul stated, reminding Luna of the fact that demons couldn't really die, they were merely displaced before reforming in their realm of Hell, rather according to Deckard's tome one had to kill a demon near the 'Black Abyss' or contain their soul in a soulstone and then shatter it upon a hellforge to send the to the former.

"Same. You were a good opponent, Zaboul." Luna replied, where the moment the demon smiled and surrendered she took his head, she would have dishonored him as a warrior had she left him alive, plus in a war there was no way they could let such a powerful demon loose since he might attack the Keep while they went after Azmodan, but once that was done she took the battleaxe and flew through the air to catch up to Leah's group.

She found that they were fighting in front of the main gate that would lead them into Hell, facing off against a large demon that was wearing armor forged for battle, a massive four-legged demon that seemed to be designed to turn the tide of battle in an instant, and yet Luna found that her presence was unnecessary. Sonya and Johanna were tanking the blows while also keeping it's attention on them, while Li-Ming, Nazeebo, and Valla assaulted it from afar with their powers, leaving Kharazim and Kara to attack it with all their might in whatever way they saw fit. Tyrael moved around the battlefield and slashed at the demon, using his knowledge of it to his advantage, while at the same time Leah rushed from point to point, never stopping in one place for more than a few moments as she loosed elemental arrows at the demon. Luna simply smiled as they, as a team, brought down the siege beast and slew it, allowing Leah to huff for a moment before she blasted open the gate that lead into Azmodan's realm of Hell, causing Luna to land beside her and pat her on the head.

"Well done, everyone. Now, let us descend into Hell and bring an end to this madness." Luna said, though she did hand over Zaboul's battleaxe to Sonya, she looked like she could handle such a weapon, before turning towards the path that would lead them towards their final target and the end of this assault.

Leah nodded as she and the others followed Luna into Hell, as she was looking forward to facing Azmodan, sealing him in the Black Soulstone, and then shattering that stone to end the Lords of Hell, all so they could bring peace to Sanctuary, and it made her eager to see what might happen in the next few hours.
