Diablo 3: Hell's Eclipse
Interlude: The Fallen Star
Previous ChapterNext ChapterLuna found that the next week was more of the same, meaning she spent some of her time training the Militia so they could be prepared for whatever the future held in store for them, while also mastering her new body over time, answering some of the questions Deckard had, and training with Leah. She found that the Militia were well trained, despite the lack of any real excitement going on, and her teachings for them only heightened each of their individual skills, a good thing since that meant they should be able to work together better in the future. Luna also found that there was someone else in the town, a young man that seemed to be the blacksmith's apprentice, but if she was being honest he seemed like a fool, constantly heading out into the deeper part of the path heading to the tomb, putting himself in greater danger. He seemed fine with this, since there wasn't a lot of danger to be had in the immediate area around New Tristram, but she had a feeling he had a death wish, since he happened to be ignoring his mentor's warnings.
The part that excited her the most was training with Leah, because some of their lessons were simple, she wanted to learn a few more tricks with her bow and Luna was willing to oblige, and others were focused on helping her master the more simple types of spells, the beginner ones to help her get used to the idea of using magic.
"Good, you're getting the hang of it." Luna remarked, as she found Leah to be a quick learner when it came to her lessons, it was almost like the girl wanted to be more useful to her uncle or even to the town, even though she knew Leah was doing this to control her powers so she wouldn't be ruled by them when the next surge happened, and right now the girl was simply repeating the mater moving exercise.
"It's... only because I have... a wonderful mentor." Leah replied, letting go of the telekinesis spell after depositing the water inside the bucket they were using to hone her precision with the spell, where she wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, but there was a smile on her face, as it felt good working towards controlling her magic.
"Careful, Leah, or the townspeople will start talking about us." Luna said, though she meant it more in a joking manner, more to have a bit of fun than anything else, despite the fact that she was still working on her actual jokes and whatnot, but she did have a smile on her face as well, due to how well Leah was taking to her training.
"Oh, I'm afraid it's too late for that, as many of them have started talking about us already... not a lot happens around here, remember?" Leah stated, because some of the elders in New Tristram had talked about her and Luna being too friendly, even though it was mostly just training and going over old information, to try and help her uncle with his studies, and some thought they were an item, not that she was going to deny that she liked the idea of such a thing, "Plus there's the fact that we're almost always together, in some manner, is helping fuel their various stories... not that they can blame me, since you are an interesting person, from a world that sounds like a myth, and yet I believe you more than I believe Uncle Deckard."
Luna knew what Leah was talking about, as her uncle told tales about wars between the angelic forces of the High Heavens and the demonic legions of the Burning Hells, who were engaged in something called the Endless Conflict since both sides seemed to have immortal soldiers, to some degree. The reason she thought about it like that was due to the fact that there appeared to be no end to either side, and even if there was a time period for them to be reborn it only fueled their desire to wage war on the other side, until one force was totally wiped out. Deckard had claimed that each force had a heart or core of some kind, where taking that out would forever weaken or even eliminate the side in question, but he had no way to confirm if such a thing was true or not, they were merely thoughts of his that he shared with them. Luna believed him, the forces of Heaven and Hell were no doubt still at play, even though he confirmed that only two of the seven Evils, the heads of Hell as she discovered, remained, the demons known as Beliel and Azmodan, while he didn't have much information on the five Archangels, those who ruled the Heavens.
She believed that the two forces were still at war with each other, using this world, Sanctuary, as a middle ground to try and gain a foothold that their foes would lack, to turn humanity into pawns to use against the other and win the war, which was why she was eager to do something other than remain in this decaying town, even though she was fine with training Leah on how to use her powers.
"Still, there is some truth to what your uncle says: there are enemies out there, lurking in the shadows, and it might very well be up to us to deal with them." Luna remarked, as it was the truth she had arrived at, there had to be a reason that she was sent to this world, and not somewhere peaceful, and after listening to Deckard speak for a time Luna was sure her purpose for coming here was to not only train Leah, but to deal with the Eternal Conflict, "Though I will admit that I wish something interesting would happen around here... don't get me wrong, living in New Tristram has been a change of pace, but I'm ready for some true excitement."
Leah opened her mouth to say something, as this was exactly like what happened when she got bored of New Tristram and made the wish that seemed to bring Luna into her life, something she didn't regret, but before she could say anything there was an explosion of sorts that drew their attention to the air. Just like when Luna fell towards New Tristram there was either a meteor or something falling out of the air, and this time it looked like there were smaller fragments near the large one, as if it was breaking up upon entering the atmosphere. This time, however, things were different as she and Luna found that the new falling object, which had to be the real Fallen Star, was on a collision course for the cathedral, something that caused her eyes to widen in terror as she remembered something else. That something happened to be that they were supposed to regroup with Uncle Deckard in the cathedral, to go over some of the texts he had found, and had only gotten him to agree to allowing them some time to train before catching up with him.
Of course Leah was still surprised that Luna had done the same as her, wishing for excitement and the world literally giving them what they wished for, though following that Luna grabbed onto her back, spread her wings, and took off without any delay, allowing them to fly over the land before watching as the Fallen Star slammed into the cathedral.
"NO!" Leah shouted, where Luna landed outside the cathedral and let her go, allowing them to head inside and discovered that the area that her uncle would have been studying in had been smashed and blown to bits by the Fallen Star, leaving a large gaping hole in the structure that seemed to be heading down into the depths of the structure, "UNCLE!"
"Oh, this isn't good." Luna remarked, picking up the Horadrim tome that was always in Deckard's possession, which meant if it was here and he wasn't, as she was seeing, there was a fair chance he had been forced down into the depths of the old cathedral, which told her that he likely used his own power to keep himself safe from harm, though at the same time one of the support pillars shattered and fell into the massive hole, "Leah, we need to go. This place is collapsing!"
"No, we can't leave without my uncle." Leah replied, because she was sure that they could figure out how to get around the dangers that were in the depths so they could rescue her uncle, or at least recover his body if the most likely thing came to pass, and this was counting the fact that she and Luna had the skills to do so.
"Trust me, I'll come right back, but both of us left our gear back in New Tristram... I'd rather not go into the depths of this place without my weapons and armor." Luna said, as she understood that Leah wanted to go in after her uncle, in fact she wasn't kidding around when she said that she'd come right back once she was outfitted, because something told her that the Fallen Star was going to bring about something bad and that she would need to be prepared for whatever it was.
Leah sat there for a moment, staring at the flaming hole that had been left by the Fallen Star, before agreeing with Luna, it would be best to return to the town, grab their gear, and she would either come with the figure or stay in the town to aid the people in facing whatever side effects this was going to have on them. As they departed from the cathedral, however, both she and Luna found that patches of ground cracked and opened up, where her eyes widened in surprise as corpses of the recently slain and skeletons of the long dead started to rise before their eyes. Luna was both shocked and surprised by this, as she wasn't expecting the Fallen Star to have the power to raise the dead like this, and it made her wonder if the tales of the monster in the depths of the cathedral would be proven true, a monster that might be awakened by this event. She did made sure to grab hold of Leah so she could fly them back to New Tristram, though as she did so they found that the event wasn't isolated in just the cathedral, there were strands of magic reaching out across the entire land, as if something dark and powerful had crashed into the land.
Luna knew that the undead would be waking up in the very near future, and she could see Daltyn and a group of the Militia already heading out to see what the disturbance was, something that made her eager to see what the immediate future held for her, Leah, and the rest of Sanctuary.
