Interlude: Training

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Luna found that Leah wasn't joking, as the day following her arrival outside New Tristram she had the majority of the Militia waiting in the training area that they used to practice their skills in, confirming that they wanted to train under her, and even their Captain, the man called Daltyn, was with them. She also found that the blacksmith, Haedrig Eamon, had taken some time to make some simple clothing that fit her unique body, due to the fact that there was no one else in the town that had the skills to do such a thing. Such a thing told Luna that the town was destined to die out, since they didn't have many of the essential professions that she had seen back in Canterlot, Ponyville, and the various towns and cities she had visited, as it was only a matter of time until the farms that fueled this place died out. Leah knew this as well, in fact many of the current residents knew that their time was limited, especially with the looting of the cathedral in the past, but until then people were doing their best to live in their declining town.

With that in mind Luna grabbed one of the practice weapons, as Haedrig found some old ones that were going to be used as scrap in the future, but for the time being they would serve as tools for her to show the Militia how to improve their skills, while at the same time allowing her to adapt to her new form.

"Remember, this is a good way to defend yourself and surprise your enemies." Luna remarked, showing the Militia how to defend blows with a shield, to save themselves from being harmed, while at the same time opening the guards of their foes so they could deliver powerful blows to save their lives.

"Understood. You are quite good at this." Daltyn stated, because they had seen Luna's moves when she saved the gear the previous day, and yet when they heard that she was from someplace that was peaceful he refused to believe it, as her skills were far better than what one would expect from a peaceful person, or whatever she was, "What sort of weapon are you the most skilled with?"

"That, Captain, would be the battleaxe. My sister and I carried weapons that became myths into battle, and mine was the battleaxe known as 'Nightfell'." Luna replied, taking a moment to set the practice gear down before drinking some water from the waterskins that were resting nearby, as she knew that staying hydrated was important and made sure the others understood that fact as well, and she knew Leah was watching nearby, eager to hear more, "It and it's counterpart, Celestia's broadsword known as Solarion, are mythical grade weapons, forged in a time that can no longer be replicated by the various artisans of my world. They are extensions of ourselves and respond to our wills, as we could summon them to our sides in a moment's notice... considering that I'm in an unknown area, it'll likely take some time for it to reach me now. Had I known I'd be sent to this place, and be given a new body, I would have collected it before the magic warped me here."

"So why don't you summon it now?" Leah asked, because if Nightfell was Luna's personal weapon, and responded to her will, while being one of the strongest weapons in her home world, it made her wonder why she didn't just summon it now and wait for it to show up.

"Because I don't think I'll need it's power." Luna replied, though at the same time she and Leah walked down the road and headed towards the exit that would bring them to an area that lead right to a crypt, but it was the empty road and the empty area, save for a few structures that seemed vacant, where Leah found that they walked to a new training area, "Now then, it's time for me to really test myself. Leah, stay behind me."

Leah did so and watched as Luna closed her eyes for a moment, where her horn glowed for a moment, as if she was silently gathering her magical energy, since the figure had said that she could use magic, before her eyes snapped open as she let a bolt of energy fly into one of the ruined trees. Since it was a small thing it left a small burn mark on her target, but Luna was pleased by this as she let out a breath and shifted her focus, where Leah found that she was collecting the power in both of her hands right now, like she was changing up her approach. Flames danced around her right hand while ice formed on her left, allowing Luna to release a small fireball and a small shard of ice at the dead tree that was her target, giving it a bit of a burn before the ice froze the area it stuck, causing Luna to smile as she observed her results. She had been interested in if she could use her new hands to channel her magic, like she had heard from Leah and Deckard when they talked about some of the people that lived in the past, and she was happy to see that she could add more ways to fight to her arsenal.

Such a thing made her wonder if she could use magic while holding onto one of the weapons that she was learning how to wield in her new form, but she had a feeling that she would be able to do a lot more when she had more mastery over her new body, something to look forward to and push towards.

"You know, Leah, I can help you control the power that's inside you." Luna commented, as there was something she felt that she had to address, as she could sense that Leah had potent magical power inside her body, in fact it reminded her of how Celestia first sensed Twilight's power, save for the fact that Leah hadn't used magic since her arrival.

"I... I can't do what you do. I can't summon it like you can... it only manifests in times of grave need, and leaves me exhausted after each usage." Leah replied, though while she wasn't sure how Luna had felt her magical power, a part of her that she had tried to forget about and couldn't since she also had nightmares that seemed more like prophecies, she also knew that she didn't have the power to do what Luna had done, "Whatever power I have is a burden..."

"Nonsense. Let me help you." Luna stated, where she gathered a small bit of magic into her right pointer finger and tapped it against Leah's forehead, who staggered backwards for a moment before her eyes widened in surprise, something that was followed by Luna smiling for a moment, "This is a feeling sharing spell, in terms of magical power, that the unicorns of old had used to help integrate newcomers into the groups that raised the sun, in the days before Celestia gained her power... for you, well, it'll allow you to sense how I use magic, how I draw on my power, and will allow you to do the same. Sure, you'll still need some training to master the basics, but this is the first steps that will help you control your power."

Leah stood there for a moment before nodding, where she watched as Luna shifted her stance once more and started to draw on her magic again, though this time around Leah could sense the movements that Luna took in drawing on her power and how she formed her various spells. The spell was working as intended, she could feel the sensations and feelings that came from it, and she could tell that Luna was keeping it basic this time so she really understood how to draw on her power, instead of letting it control her. Such a thing was followed by Leah nodding as she nervously raised her hands, which shook for a few moments as she considered what she was doing to do, this was insanity when she thought about it, before she let out a sigh as she tried to do what Luna did. Since there was a stream nearby Leah decided to try drawing some of it out and moving it, she was confident that something like that could work, and when she asked Luna it wasn't long before she felt the sensations on how to do such a thing, like she had a mentor that was willing to teach her.

In the following moments she managed to draw out what barely passed as a sphere of water, it's form was messy and just plain bad in some cases, but it caused Leah to smile a little as she forced herself to move it over to them, where it exploded and showered her in a bit of water.

"Damn, I thought I had it." Leah remarked, though while she was annoyed that the spell had broken on her, and she needed to get cleaned up thanks to all the water that had gotten on her, part of her was actually happy that she had been given one of her first true lessons on how to wield magic.

"Don't worry about it, you did good for a first attempt. It takes time for most individuals to master the basics." Luna replied, which was the truth, save for cases like Twilight and Starlight, the latter one she still had no idea how to comprehend since she matched the former somehow, before she noticed that there was a slender tail that seemed to be attached to Leah, one the girl was either ignoring or had no idea it was there, "Looks like your invisibility ink got washed out."

"WHAT?!" Leah stated, where she turned her head and found that Luna was right, the appendage, which was the width of two of her fingers and was a dark red coloration with a spade tip at the very end, though at the same time, as she grabbed it in an attempt to hide it, she noticed that Luna wasn't judging her at all, she was merely curious, "Okay... I've been using some of my uncle's invisibility ink to hide this from everyone, and before you ask let me tell you that Uncle Deckard knows about it, in fact this was his idea. As far as I know I was born with this, and my mother... or who I thought was my mother at the time... suggested that I hide it by wrapping it around my leg, which was easier to do when I was a kid since it was smaller, but since I've grown up it's become what it is now, requiring a new way to hide it. You can't tell the people of New Tristram, because they won't understand why I've hidden it for so long, and I'm worried that they might cause me out for being different..."

Leah stopped as Luna pulled her into a hug, showing her that she had some support and that there was someone here for her to talk to, someone other than her elderly uncle, something that caused Leah to smile a little as she let herself be calmed by the figure's hug.

"Don't worry, I'll do what I can to help you... both in terms of magic, and in helping you with your uniqueness." Luna said, as she knew that turning away from people could have serious consequences, she was a living example of that since her sister had turned her back on her and that caused the birth of Nightmare Moon, and right now she knew that if people turned their backs on Leah, and abandoned her, it would spell disaster in some form, before she pulled back and helped Leah wrap the tail around her leg, "Come on, let's get you back to your room and apply more of the ink to your tail... we'll resume your magic lessons tomorrow, after you've had a chance to calm down."

Leah nodded and walked beside Luna as they headed back into the town, a slight blush on her face since Luna was the first person she had shared this secret with, outside her uncle, and yet she seemed attracted to the figure, something that made her wonder what the coming days had in store for her, Luna, and New Tristram.
