Breakfast With Royalty

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

You rub your eyes groggily as pale amber shafts of morning light slice through the drapes. Slowly, recollections of last night's emotionally charged reunion with Princess Luna trickle in. Despite the lingering tension, your slumber proved surprisingly… tranquil. Dreamless. Perhaps a subtle overture of goodwill from your estranged lunar paramour?

Sitting up amidst the rumpled sheets, you take stock of your lavish surroundings. The hearth's embers have long since guttered out, leaving only faint wisps of wood smoke perfuming the air. Plush upholstery and rich mahogany fixtures gleam invitingly in the sunbeams.

A tentative knock at the door interrupts your musings. "Sir? Their Highnesses request your presence in the dining hall," a soft voice—likely one of the castle staff—calls from the other side.

You start, pulse quickening. Both Princesses? Surely Luna hadn't already divulged the sordid tale of your return to her sister so soon? A hundred worst-case scenarios flicker through your mind as you hurriedly make yourself presentable.

Steeling your nerves with a steadying breath, you emerge into the corridor. The batpony sentries from last night are the only ones awaiting on the other side; the shorter one inclines his head fractionally, gesturing down the hall with a leathery wing. "This way," he intones, the voice soft like the one you had just heard. Your eyes widen fractionally in slight surprise, realizing that you hadn't heard him speak until just now.

Following along with the two thestral guards, you don't have to wait long before you reach a set of towering double doors flanked by more guards, these ones being white-coated unicorn guards adorned with golden ceremonial armor; Celestia's own Royal Guards, no doubt. One guard's horn ignites to open the door, stepping aside with a perfunctory bow. "The Princesses await within."

Squaring your shoulders, you take a moment to center yourself. No matter what unfolds beyond those gilded apertures, you cannot afford to let your composure slip. Not after the millennium of bitter heartache you inflicted upon poor Luna.

The doors swing wide, revealing a cavernous banquet hall of breathtaking opulence. An immense oak table spans the center, fairly groaning beneath the weight of countless delicacies. Succulent fruits, pastries, and tureens of fragrant oatmeal glisten in the light of arched picture windows.

But it's the two regally statuesque figures at the far end that instantly command your focus. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna sit side-by-side, regarding you with expectant—if unreadable—expressions. As you step across the threshold, the massive door closes behind you, the sound echoing across the otherwise silent dining hall.

"Princesses," you incline your head respectfully. "I trust the night found you both well?" Despite your difference in height and the distance between you, you feel infinitesimally small standing before them. A thousand years of history, coalescing all at once in this very moment… it would be almost poetic if you had the thought to put such a thing to parchment.

Princess Celestia's radiant mane shimmers in auroral pastels as she regards you with a placid smile. "Welcome, Anonymous. We hope your accommodations were to your liking?" Her voice is mellifluous and warm, betraying none of the surprise that must be churning just beneath that poised surface.

Beside the solar diarch, Princess Luna sits ramrod straight, her own stardusted tresses undulating in unconscious counterpoint to her sister's prismatic locks. Those eyes of hers bore into you with laserlike focus, searching your expression for any tells or hidden meanings. She has yet to utter a single word.

An expectant beat stretches out. You realize the Princesses are waiting for your reply. Clearing your throat, you dip into a slight bow. "The chambers were exquisite, Princess Celestia. You both have my sincere gratitude for extending such… generous hospitality, all things considered."

The white alicorn's smile widens a fraction, crinkling the corners of her eyes. "But of course. What sort of hosts would we be to turn away…" Her gaze flickers briefly to Luna. "Unexpected guests of such import?"

Something tightens almost imperceptibly in Luna's posture at those words. Her barrel expands with a slow inhale, then releases it in a measured exhale through flared nostrils. She still does not speak, though her long lashes dip fractionally as she listens.

"In any case," Celestia continues smoothly. "You must be famished after your long journey, Sir Anon." That old title of yours from centuries ago rolls off her tongue as easily as it had back then. Ever the diplomat between the two of them… "Please, come and sit, make yourself comfortable." With a graceful sweep of one alabaster wing, she gestures to an open chair near the Princesses.

You nod your acquiescence, feeling Luna's impossibly keen stare burning between your shoulder blades with every step. Celestia is all breezy cordiality, yet a thousand unspoken questions simmer just beneath her placid mask. And Luna… her stoic silence unnerves you more than any accusation ever could.

The chair's plush cushion accepts your weight with a whisper of crushed velvet as you take your seat directly across from the Lunar Princess, her older sister at the head of the table next to you. Your muscles remain taut as piano wire, however, hyper-attuned to the Princesses' subtlest movements. A surreal incredulity grips you at the sheer absurdity of taking breakfast with the immortal sisters after your millennium-long absence.

"Tea?" Celestia offers, magically lifting an ornate silver pot. Her horn shimmers with buttery yellow light, the steam curling from the spout in unhurried tendrils. You nod numbly, scarcely trusting your voice.

As if on cue, Luna finally stirs. "Let us dispense with the pleasantries, sister," she declares in a tone that pierces you to the core. Her gaze remains locked on your face as she leans forward almost imperceptibly. "There is much to discuss."

Your hand reaching for the teacup freezes as Luna's piercing words jolt you from the idle pleasantries like a bucket of ice water. Celestia pauses fractionally, the levitating teapot held in stasis before you. Clearly your lunar paramour has already filled her in regarding the true nature of your sudden reappearance, all these centuries later.

Yet you steady yourself, squaring your shoulders and lifting your chin to meet that soul-searing gaze head on. "You're right, of course," you acknowledge in a carefully measured tone. Each word feels leaden on your tongue, weighty with the gravity of this pivotal moment. "I'm… beyond grateful for the chance to break bread with you both after so long. But… I suppose there is the proverbial elephant in the room."

You glance sidelong at Celestia. "I assume that Luna has already regaled you with the tale?" You ask, taking the chance to at last sip from your tea, whetting the dryness of your throat at long last.

Princess Celestia sips her tea with a measured grace, the fine china clinking delicately as she sets down her cup. Her magenta eyes regard you calmly over the rim, betraying nothing of her inner thoughts.

"Luna did share the broad strokes of your rather… unexpected reunion, yes," the solar diarch confirms in her signature melodious cadence. Yet there's a subtle undercurrent to her words that raises the fine hairs along the back of your neck. "Though there seem to be certain details still shrouded in mystery."

Beside her sister, Luna's feathers rustle with a whisper of cosmic silk. "Details that We fully intend to lay bare before this vexing matter can be considered settled," the Princess of Night adds in a low, ominous timbre.

"Of course," you acknowledge, surprised at how level your voice emerges despite the nerves jangling beneath your skin. "I wouldn't dream of insulting your hospitality with half-truths or misdirections. Not after…" Your words falter as a pang of old regrets squeezes your chest. "Well. Not after everything. But I digress; I believe last night you mentioned consequences…" You make busy setting a number of fruits and pastries on your plate, silently.

Princess Luna's ears swivel forward at the mention of 'consequences,' azure eyes flashing with intense emotion. Her wings mantle and ruffle, the pristine feathers gleaming beneath the morning light spilling through the tall windows.

"Indeed," the midnight alicorn replies, voice low and resonant. "A reckoning most dire awaits thee, for the wounds wrought by thine abandonment yet fester in the depths of Our heart."

Luna's gaze bores into you, ancient and inscrutable as the very heavens she shepherds. The air around her shimmers faintly with eldritch power, mane and tail undulating in an unseen celestial breeze. Even Celestia appears to lean away from her sister's building intensity, though her expression remains a polite mask.

"But such matters shan't be resolved in a single morn," Luna continues after a weighty pause. "Nay, 'twill be a journey, long and arduous, to unravel the tapestry of bitter consequence woven by thy hooves." Her long lashes dip fractionally. "Art thou truly prepared to shoulder such a burden, Anon?"

You draw a long, slow breath, holding Princess Luna's piercing gaze. The gravity of her words hangs in the air between you. "I've spent a thousand years in servitude to the Four Princes already, facing trials and tribulations on my fool's errand towards longevity; a journey in itself," you declare, managing to keep your voice steady. "Though it pales in comparison to what I can only imagine you endured during my absence… If another journey is what it takes to find my way back into your good graces once more… I shall bear it. For you, Luna. For us."

Princess Luna regards you with an intense, scrutinizing gaze. For several long, ponderous moments, the alicorn princess remains silent, processing your heartfelt declaration. Her mane and tail billow and swirl around her in a nimbus of stardust, mirroring the tempestuous thoughts no doubt churning behind that regal facade.

At last, Luna draws in a slow breath, the air seeming to shimmer and warp around her. When she speaks, her voice resounds with the sonorous depths of fathomless time itself.

"Thou speakest prettily of contrition, Anon…" the Princess of Night murmurs in a low, melodious timbre. "Yet We must confess Ourselves… conflicted in fully accepting such earnest overtures so readily."

Her wing-feathers flex and resettle along sleek indigo sides. That piercing azure gaze never wavers from yours.

"For though a thousand years may seem an eternity to thy mortal sensibilities… the sting of ultimate betrayal lingers far longer in the cosmic mind." Luna's starry tail flicks in subtle agitation. "Understand, We do not doubt the sincerity of thine intent. Rather… trust, once shattered, must needs be rebuilt brick by arduous brick."

The midnight alicorn leans fractionally closer, the very air crackling with eldritch power. Her obsidian shoes glimmer in the morning light.

"So let this mark the first stone laid in reconstructing that tenuous bridge between us, my feckless paramour." Luna's wing extends in a decidedly equine gesture of challenge. "We shall put thy convictions to the test and see if they prove as steadfast as thou claimest…"

You meet Luna's piercing gaze head on, despite the eldritch power crackling around her. Her challenge hangs heavy in the air between you, a gauntlet thrown down to test the mettle of your conviction.

You know this journey of reconciliation and atonement will be long, winding through jagged valleys of bitterness and resentment. The chasm of hurt yawns wide after a millennium apart. Trust, so carelessly shattered, must be earned anew through tireless devotion.

But for her, you would brave any trial. Endure any crucible. If that means laying yourself bare, brick by brick, to rebuild the bridge between your hearts—so be it.

"I accept, Princess," you declare solemnly. "Whatever tests and trials you deem fit, I shall meet them unflinchingly. For too long I've run from the consequences of my hubris… But no more. I'm here to face the aftermath of my sins. To prove that my love for you transcends the march of eons."

A beat passes. You glance at Celestia, then back to Luna. "I only pray you'll allow me the chance to show you, day by day, that this isn't some hollow platitude. That I'll put in the work, no matter how long it takes."

Luna's eyes blaze intensely as she holds your earnest gaze. The cosmic power roiling off her form in near-tangible waves stands your hair on end. Yet you refuse to flinch away from the full, unfiltered brunt of her ancient regard.

"Thou hast ever possessed a disarming sincerity to thine overtures, dear Anon," the Princess of Night muses, a faint smirk playing about her muzzle. "An almost… mortal propensity for grandiose vows unbounded by the weight of eternal consequence."

"I've never been more certain of anything, Luna," you vow, voice soft but undeniably resolute. "After all… what's another thousand years rebuilding trust, if it means spending the rest of eternity together?" Your lips quirk in a small, wistful smile. "I'm not that naïve young boy anymore, despite my youthful visage. I'll take my first steps on this winding road. And the next, and the next, however long it takes… until you deem me worthy of walking beside you once more. Just tell me where you wish for me to start."

Princess Luna regards you for several long heartbeats. Her ethereal mane swirls and billows in slow, hypnotic whorls, cosmic energies crackling across the diaphanous strands. Those ancient irises, depthless as the fathomless reaches between galaxies, seem to lay bare your very soul with their piercing intensity.

Finally, she tosses her head with an equine snort, sending a ripple through the charged air.

"Ever the hopeless romantic, I see. Some things never change." Despite her sardonic tone, there's an undeniable hint of nostalgic amusement lacing Luna's words. "Very well, Anon. If thou art so eager to embark on this 'winding road' of atonement… We shan't deny thee the chance to prove thy sincerity through action."

Her starry tail flicks once, decisively. "Our first trial is thus: thou shalt accompany Us to Ponyville this evening to make amends," she declares in ringing tones. "We have unfinished business to attend after thy… untimely interruption of the Nightmare Night festivities last night."

The alicorn shifts her lithe frame, sleek muscles rippling beneath her midnight coat. She arches one elegant brow. "Consider it a chance to demonstrate thy sincerity through humble contrition. To make restitution for thy heedless trampling of a sacred eve."

Luna's feathers rustle as her wings flex. The motion sends motes of stardust cascading from her diaphanous mane. "Thou shalt apologize for thy brazen disruptions before the townsponies. Only then can the first hoof-falls on this path of atonement be set."

You nod solemnly at Princess Luna's weighty pronouncement. The idea of groveling before the ponies of Ponyville, a relative stranger in their midst, sets your nerves alight. But no—this is the path you chose the moment you dared return to Equestria to reclaim your heart's truest desire. Bared pride is a small price to pay for even the faintest chance to reignite the ashes of your love.

"It shall be done, Princess," you vow, voice low and fervent. "Though it was not my intent, my actions last night were not befitting of one who was once to be Royal Consort. I shall thus endeavor to make right by both the townsponies and by you."

Princess Luna's expression remains impassive as stone, though her eyes flicker with some ineffable emotion at your solemn vow. Slowly, regally, she inclines her head a fraction of an inch—the barest nod of acknowledgement.

"See that you do," the midnight alicorn intones, her voice low and melodious. The timbre of it sends a shiver racing down your spine, even as her words settle like a leaden weight in your chest. "We shall be watching most keenly to see how you comport yourself, Anon. Do not disappoint Us again."

Her gaze lingers on yours for a moment longer, ancient and inscrutable as the stars themselves. Then she turns to address her sister, breaking the spell.

"Sister, if you would be so kind as to excuse Us? We have preparations to make for this evening's… festivities." Luna's lip curls slightly, hinting at a sardonic smile. The Solar Princess merely inclines her head with a gracious murmur of assent.

Without further preamble, the Princess of Dreams rises from her seat in a fluid rush of stars and shadows. Her mane and tail billow around her as she steps delicately around the table. Each strike of her argent-shod hooves against the marble floor rings with a peculiar resonance until she pauses beside you, close enough for the chill aura of her power to raise goosebumps along your skin. Her breath is cool against the shell of your ear as she leans in to murmur:

"Until moonrise then, my feckless paramour. Pray you do not give me fresh cause to rue your reappearance in my realm."

And with that, she is gone in a swirl of stars and midnight, leaving only a faint scent of silver to mark her passage. You slump back in your chair, heart pounding against the cage of your ribs.

Princess Celestia arches one delicate brow, her prismatic mane shimmering in the light. "Well?" the Solar Diarch prompts gently, lifting her teacup to her lips. "I believe you were saying something about 'elephants in the room'?"

You resist the urge to wipe the sweat from your brow, meeting Celestia's expectant gaze. "Quite the perspicacious pachyderm indeed," you quip with a wry twist of your lips. Drawing a steadying breath, you forge ahead.

"As I'm sure you've surmised, Princess, my history with your sister is… complicated." Understatement of the millennium, that. "I abandoned Luna in a misguided attempt to attain immortality, so that I might return one day and stand eternally by her side, an equal."

A mirthless chuckle. "Hubris in the extreme. Instead, my cowardice shattered her heart and set in motion a chain of events that led to…" You swallow hard. "Well. You know the rest firsthand, I imagine."

Princess Celestia studies you over the rim of her teacup, magenta eyes enigmatic. Her prismatic mane flows weightlessly, swirling like a pastel aurora. After a contemplative pause, she gently returns the cup to its saucer with a soft clink. The sound feels oddly portentous in the laden silence.

"An equal? My, but that is quite the aspiration," Celestia remarks in dulcet tones, quirking her lips in a curious little smile. "Mortal and divine, together defying the laws of cosmic order…"

Her winged brow arches as she shakes her head, sending sparkles of magic swirling loose. "Such an ambitious quest. Foolhardy, certainly. But born out of a kind of pure love rare in this day and age." Those ancient eyes hold yours with unnerving intensity—as if weighing heart and soul alike.

Celestia shifts her alabaster wings, gold-shod hooves tucked beneath her as she regards you thoughtfully. "My sister's anguish shattered the heavens themselves when you disappeared. A thousand years of bitter isolation and untold strife…"

She sighs, the sound rich with millennia of memory and emotion you cannot begin to fathom. "Yet, upon your miraculous return, her first instinct is to grant you this chance at redemption, despite it all. That speaks volumes, does it not?"

Pausing, Celestia's horn glows as she lifts the teapot. The fragrant amber liquid steams as it streams into your cup. "I will not deceive you, Anon. This path you embark upon will be fraught with challenges. Luna's trust is no trifling trinket to be bought with sweet words alone."

Her expression turns solemn, the very air seeming to still as she pins you with her luminous stare. "She will test you. In ways both overt and subtle. Drive you to your very limits and likely beyond, to prove the veracity of your devotion."

A beat. Then Celestia's face softens into something almost like sympathy. "But that is the price of true reconciliation, is it not? Love demands an unflinching willingness to grow and atone when we err. And you certainly have a great deal to atone for."

Your head bows solemnly at that. "I… I know, Tia." The ancient affectionate nickname for your beloved's elder sister rolls off your tongue just as easily as it did centuries ago, when she would give you both counsel and comfort. The three of you were inseparable back then…

"But I also know, with every fiber of my being, that she is worth it. Worth every trial, every moment of suffering, if it means even the chance to rekindle what we once had." You lift your chin, resolve hardening. "I lost sight of that years ago, blinded by my own hubris and short-sighted ambition. No longer."

You clasp your hand to your breast. "I will prove myself, day by day, hour by hour. I will prostrate myself before all of Equestria if that's what it takes. I will gladly spend the next thousand years making amends, so long as it's by her side. This love, this bond we share… it transcends time, space, even the boundaries between mortal and divine."

A brief break of silence, and then you let out a huff, a self-deprecating chuckle. "I know, I know. Grand words from he who so grandly mucked it all up. But… I have to believe that something this profound is worth fighting for, even against impossible odds; it's what kept me going during my time in Farasi, and it's what keeps me going, even now. And if there is even a glimmer of that love still flickering in Luna's heart… I will chase it to the ends of the earth and beyond."

Princess Celestia regards you silently for a beat, her ancient eyes holding hints of unfathomable depths. Then the sun princess lets out a soft sigh, managing to imbue the single exhalation with layers of regret and nostalgia.

"You certainly have ever been one for bold proclamations and grandiose vows," she remarks, though her tone holds no censure. Just a tinge of wistful bemusement as she gestures towards you with one feathery wingtip. "Thankfully, you also carry a rather endearing sincerity behind those audacious avowals."

A tremulous smile curves her lips as Celestia leans forward, resting her chin atop her raised forehooves. "I confess, I missed your particular brand of romantic ardor during those years you were… absent. Luna, too, despite all her prickliness."

Her prismatic mane ripples and shimmers in a cascade of dawn light as she holds your gaze steadily. "You made her happy, you know. More so than I'd seen her in centuries. Which is precisely why your disappearance hurt her so tremendously."

Celestia's wing flexes outward. "She loves deeply, my little Luna. With a whole-hearted devotion that knows no bounds between night and day, mortal and divine." She pauses to let the full gravity of her words sink in. "So you must understand that you do not merely seek to atone for a romantic betrayal, Anon. What you unwittingly hurt was her very essence, her soul's sacred resonance."

The sun alicorn exhales a quavering breath, eyes glistening with some unspoken emotion. "But I also believe her to be more resilient and resolute than any deity in the heavens. If there exists a spirit capable of finding some way to reconcile your shared plight… I dare not doubt it is hers."

Celestia reaches out then to place one wing over your hand in a feather-light caress that nonetheless carries profound weight. "For her sake, and yours, I hope you prove worthy of the chance she has granted you. Do not squander this rare gift, Anon. Love, after all, springs eternal—but even the mightiest flame can be extinguished through callous disregard."

"You speak truly," you murmur. "What Luna and I once shared… even the strongest mortal bonds feel temporal next to its profundity." Your eyes lift to meet her celestial stare steadily. "I won't fail this time. Not through inaction nor feckless wandering. My path lies at her side from this day forward, come what may."

Drawing a fortifying breath, you incline your head in a solemn bow before the radiant Sun Princess. "Thank you… for granting me counsel when every reasonable impulse must surely urge you to eject this failed relic from your court once and for all. I needed that reminder of just how profound a trust your sister extends me, unworthy though I remain."

You pause, lips quirking in a sardonic half-smile as the boyish spark of nostalgia kindles behind your breastbone.

"Though I dare say some things never change, hm? You two still gravitating towards opposite poles, even a millennium removed…" Shaking your head in bemusement, you fold your hands upon the polished table with a quiet huff. "One offers wisdom. The other, passion. I'd best brace myself for Luna's imminent onset."

Drawing yourself upright, you meet Celestia's knowing gaze with resolute solemnity. "Still, you're right. Actions speak louder than florid tongue-waggling on this front. So I steel myself to face whatever crucible my Stardust deems necessary for earning a sliver of her trust anew."

Your next words emerge in a hushed murmur, rich with sincerity despite their frayed delivery. "I won't disappoint you this time, Tia. Not you, not her, not even myself. I'll chase that spark until my very last embers gutter out into dust, if that's what it takes." You pause, chest swelling with a swell of conviction tempered by hard experience. "Because eternity without her light… that's no life at all for this errant flame."

After sharing a lingering look of unspoken understanding with your oldest friend and confidant, you rise from your seat to take your leave, but not before grabbing a frosted pastry; no sense facing the road ahead on an empty stomach, after all.

Ahead lies Luna's first trial—the first waypoint on a winding path toward the faintest hope of reconciliation and redemption. Your feet may falter upon those arduous roads, your body may grow weary with the endless miles…

But, your spirit remains resolute. You'll see this journey through. No matter how arduous the path, how scathing Luna's trials, how lofty the summit to scale - you know your destination.

Home. Back into her embrace at long last, wounds cauterized and hurts mended through a devotion that transcends even the yawning abyss of eternity itself.

This is your promise, your vow. Failure isn't an option—because to surrender now means accepting an endless existence of bitter emptiness, void of the one soul you crave beyond all mortal yearnings.

So be it. Let the trials begin. You're ready.

Author's Note

A bit shorter this time around, I think this is much more manageable in terms of chapter length; the first two definitely needed more because of all that happened within, but this chapter I think was one where I was able to let things breathe a bit and just let the dialogue flow.

I actually found it quite challenging to figure out how Celestia would end up reacting after all this time, but I think I managed to strike a balance that fit with her characterization at this time in the show, as well as a decently believable portrayal given that she'd been informed of the situation by Luna beforehand. Hopefully I'll get more chances for writing interactions with her!
