Reluctant Hero
Nowadays, actual missions undertaken by the Royal Guard are few and far between, and almost always surrounded by secrecy to keep the peaceful and comfortable lifestyle of regular ponies.
During this era of peace, even fewer are the members of the Royal Guard that manage the earn the title of "hero". Mares and stallions of untold bravery, ready to sacrifice themselves for the crown or it's subjects, doubt and fear never crossing their minds, glorious songs, tales and legends dedicated to their ageless exploits.
This story is not about them. Enter Captain Green Clover of the Royal Guard, a pony labelled as "hero" thanks to his luck and ability to fake a brave, selfless personality, and whose only reason to keep the charade is out of embarrassment about the truth (and to keep the perks that come with being considered a hero, of course).
A friend of his declassifies his personal journals and decides to publish them in order to give us a peek into the mind of a supposed hero. In this story, we follow Captain Clover as he's tasked with stopping a Nightmare Moon-worshipping cult armed with a fearsome artifact that has made the Haysead Swamp their home, and his first encounter with a new enemy that would cause him much trouble in the future.
Inspired by the Sandy Mitchells' "Ciaphas Cain" series.
