As I made my way through the thick forest, the glow of Zecora's hut pierced through the shadows like a beacon. Relieved, I turned to Mr. Manticore, who had been my fierce protector and unlikely guide. "Thank you, Mr. Manticore," I said with gratitude, giving him a small nod before trotting toward the hut.

The hut itself looked both eerie and inviting, nestled in the depths of the Everfree. Strange symbols were painted on the door, and the scent of exotic herbs wafted through the air. I stepped up to the door, ready to knock, but I hesitated. I’d read fanfics about Zecora, stories that painted her as an almost mystical creature, wise and knowledgeable beyond her years. In some of those tales, she even knew the future. For a second, I wondered if she could see both my futures—the one where I was an alicorn in Equestria, and the one where I was merely a human back on Earth.

But before I could knock, I heard her voice from inside. "Thief! Don’t you dare, or I’ll use a potion to change your hair!" Zecora cried, her voice sharp and unexpected.

I gasped and immediately dove into a nearby bush, my heart racing. Did she know I was here? Or was it a lucky guess? Either way, I wasn’t ready to face her. Huddling deeper into the leaves, I decided to stay hidden and try again in the morning when, maybe, she would be more receptive.

The night air was chilly, and the ground was far from comfortable, but exhaustion overcame me. Slowly, despite the prickling of branches and leaves, I drifted into an uneasy sleep.

The first rays of dawn woke me, filtering through the dense canopy above. My body ached from the night on the hard ground, but I quickly shook myself awake. I didn’t want Zecora to find me lurking outside her door in the daylight. As quietly as I could, I crept out from my hiding spot, taking one last look at the hut. Maybe I’d come back another day when I felt braver.

Retracing my steps, I started making my way out of the forest. Mr. Manticore was nowhere to be seen, but he must have been looking out for me in his own way, as a group of birds appeared, fluttering down from the trees. They chirped, hopping and flitting just ahead of me, guiding me along the winding paths.

“Thank you, birds,” I murmured gratefully, following their lead as they wove a way through the forest.

After a while, I reached a small clearing, and the edge of the forest was visible in the distance. I watched the birds as they chirped and fluttered around me. They seemed to trust me, and their trust brought a smile to my face. I thought about the wings on my back, wishing to feel that sense of freedom again. Focusing on the feeling of being an alicorn, I felt the familiar tingle of magic, and with a soft glow, my wings appeared once more. I was an alicorn again.

Watching the birds flit around me, I thought about food, wondering if I could give them something to thank them. My horn glowed, and with a soft pop, small piles of birdseed appeared, scattered around my hooves. Each bird eagerly chirped its thanks, diving down to peck at the seeds.

I watched them eat, feeling a pang of guilt as a memory resurfaced. When I was a child, I’d once found a nest of baby birds and, out of childish curiosity, had touched the eggs, accidentally cracking one. I never got over the guilt of that moment, and watching these little birds enjoy the food I’d provided felt like a chance to make amends.

Shaking off the memories, I reminded myself, “I’m a pony now. That’s in the past.” I took a deep breath, letting the fresh forest air fill my lungs. I felt lighter, as though a small part of the guilt I’d carried all these years had finally lifted.

“Goodbye, birds!” I called, waving my hoof in farewell. They chirped in response, their cheerful voices echoing through the trees. Just as I turned to leave, I felt a surge of energy and noticed that I’d transformed into a unicorn again. I was still getting used to the way my magic worked, the way I could change forms almost at will. I found the path to ponyville.
