Worlds Apart

“What do you mean by alternative universes?” asked King Sombra, looking at her with the skepticism of someone who has just heard the most absurd theory since the “pretend everything is fine” of life.

Both of them were tired of arguing. Twilight was at one end of the room, while King Sombra was at the other, separated as if they were two peculiar creatures in a zoo.

“It’s the only possible explanation,” Twilight said, with the air of someone who has been solving a puzzle with pieces that clearly don’t fit. “Our stories don’t match. You don’t seem to be lying, and...” she sighed wearily, as if she had just run a marathon. “Aularis...,” Twilight murmured, trying to process the information with difficulty. “That... that doesn’t make sense. Equestria has always been Equestria. How could you...

Twilight fell silent, staring at King Sombra as if she expected him, by some magical means, to fix the reality puzzle that had just become completely confusing.

King Sombra, frowning with disbelief, seemed to be struggling to accept the explanation.

“What do you mean my reality is different? My place is in the Crystal Empire, protecting my people. I shouldn’t be here, in an... alternate universe?”

Twilight, surprised by King Sombra’s genuinely bewildered reaction, tried to understand what he was saying.

“This...,” Twilight said, more to herself than to King Sombra. “Something very strange is happening. The spell was supposed to reveal the true essence of something or someone, but you... you’re talking about a world and a role that don’t fit with the reality I know.”

King Sombra approached Twilight, his tone full of urgency.

“This can’t be!” he exclaimed. “I have a kingdom to protect, responsibilities to fulfill. I can’t stay here, trapped in a rainbow castle with... ponies? I need to get back, and I need to do it now. Help me.”

Twilight looked at King Sombra, noticing the desperation in his eyes. Despite her knowledge of him, the contrast with the evil tyrant she knew was striking. It seemed she was seeing a more vulnerable version of him, someone genuinely concerned about his duties and his people.

“Help you?” Twilight replied, still skeptical. “Even if you’re not the same King Sombra we know, I can’t fully trust you. You’re a stranger in my world, and your intentions aren’t clear.”

King Sombra, with an expression of resignation, turned away.

“Fine,” he said, sounding disappointed. “If that’s what you want, I’ll stay here and try to understand this... situation. But don’t expect me not to be frustrated by the lack of options.”

Twilight felt the ground shifting beneath her hooves. The situation was taking an increasingly strange turn, and her knowledge of Equestria’s history seemed not to fit with what King Sombra was saying.

“And what am I supposed to do?” he asked, with a tone of frustration. “I’m here right now because of your mistake, Sparkle.”

“I know...” Twilight said, more to herself. “Something is very wrong here. The spell should have revealed the true essence, but what I’m seeing doesn’t fit with what I know.”

Sombra frowned, trying to comprehend the magnitude of the problem. Twilight took a moment to breathe deeply, trying to regain her composure.

“The spell I tried to perform was designed to reveal the true essence of beings and places,” she explained. “But what I see now doesn’t match what it should be. Maybe there was a problem with the spell, or there could be a dislocation in time or space.”

King Sombra looked at Twilight with a new mix of interest and skepticism.

“Dislocation in time or space?” he asked. “That sounds like something out of a fairy tale. Is it really possible?”

Twilight nodded slowly, still not completely sure, but the fact that King Sombra was willing to consider that possibility gave her a new perspective.

“In theory, yes. High magic spells can have unpredictable effects, and if something went wrong, it could have caused a distortion in reality,” Twilight said. “We need to figure out what happened to understand how to fix it.”

King Sombra nodded, his attitude shifting from confusion to cooperation.

“Alright. If this is a distortion problem, let’s work together to solve it,” he said, his tone now more serious. “We both have a lot to lose if we don’t resolve this situation.”

Twilight looked at him with a mix of distrust and relief. Although she was still not completely sure if King Sombra was being sincere or if he had some hidden agenda, the idea of collaborating seemed to be the best option.

“Alright, we’ll work together. But I warn you, Sombra, if you try anything, I won’t hesitate to stop you,” Twilight said firmly.

King Sombra raised his hooves in a gesture of surrender, showing that he understood the point.

“Got it. Now, where do we start?” he asked, looking around the lab as if searching for a clue about the origin of the problem.

Twilight moved to her workbench, where the remnants of the spell still remained. She picked up a book and began reviewing the notes and calculations she had made.

“We need to investigate the spell itself. See if there was any anomaly in the casting process or if there was any magical interference,” Twilight said. “It might also be necessary to perform an analysis of the residual magic to better understand what happened.”

King Sombra approached, observing the book and papers attentively. Although he was not familiar with the type of magic Twilight was using, he was willing to learn.

“So, how do we proceed?” he asked, trying to be helpful in the situation.

Twilight nodded, organizing her thoughts.

“First, we need to identify if there was any component of the spell that might have caused a distortion,” she said. “From there, we’ll be able to understand how and why reality deviated from what we know.”

Together, Twilight and King Sombra began working, investigating the details of the spell and trying to unravel the mystery of the distortion in reality.

Meanwhile, the ordinary day in Ponyville had turned into a crossroads of magic and mystery, and both knew that solving it wouldn’t be easy.
