Twilight and King Sombra began to review the fragments of the spell and examine the texts for clues before they vanished into the air.
As Twilight immersed herself in a meticulous analysis, King Sombra tried to help, but his efforts didn’t seem to be going in the right direction.
“Hmm, this looks like it’s… where it’s supposed to be?” Sombra murmured, knocking over a pile of books while trying to reach one on the top of a shelf.
“No, no, no! That’s not how it’s done!” Twilight exclaimed, turning around with a mix of frustration and exasperation. “What are you doing?! Weren’t you supposed to be skilled at this? Didn’t they teach you how to handle magical books?”
Sombra straightened up, a bit embarrassed, and brushed dust off his cape.
“Well, this isn’t exactly my strong suit,” he said with an ironic smile. “My specialty is curses and dark enchantments, not magical research.”
Twilight looked at him incredulously but couldn’t help a small smile at his clumsiness.
“Perfect!” she muttered, smacking her forehead. “Just stay there and try not to cause any more disasters, okay?”
Sombra raised his hooves in surrender, clearly willing to follow Twilight’s advice, while she returned to her work with a resigned sigh.
King Sombra, feeling a bit dejected, moved to a corner of the room and sat down in a chair, crossing his legs with an expression of frustration and resignation as he watched Twilight work frenetically.
Twilight couldn’t help but laugh when she saw him settled in the corner, clearly more comfortable in the role of spectator than as a helper.
“Oh, come on!” Twilight said with a laugh. “Look at you, playing the role of spectator so well. I didn’t think you’d be so good at it.”
Sombra frowned, but a small smile escaped his lips as he looked at Twilight with a touch of amusement.
“At least I’m not breaking anything… for now,” he replied with a grin. “If it helps you work faster, I’ll stay here and be the best observer I can.”
Twilight laughed again and nodded, refocusing on her research. Even though the situation was complicated, at least she had found some humor in King Sombra’s disastrous attempt to help.
A few hours later, Twilight was deep in reading several books, with notes and papers scattered across her desk. Occasionally, she glanced at the scattered papers she had placed in a corner to examine the spell.
“Hey, Sombra,” Twilight said, not taking her eyes off the texts, “how different is your world?”
King Sombra, who had been trying not to look bored in his corner, looked at Twilight with a frown.
“I wouldn’t know what’s ‘different’ since I have no idea how your world is,” he responded with a slight look of confusion.
Twilight thought for a moment before a spark of inspiration lit up her face. She jumped up and began searching frantically through her shelves.
“I have an idea!” she exclaimed excitedly. She returned with a large stack of papers and sketches in her hooves. “Let’s do a comparison. I’ll bring plans and descriptions of Equestria for you to see, and you can describe your own world to me. Maybe this way we can find the differences and understand what’s happening.”
Twilight floated one of the images in the air, holding it in front of King Sombra. He examined it with a mix of curiosity and slight indifference, as if trying to find some interest in a magazine that clearly wasn’t to his liking.
“The Everfree Forest,” Twilight said, pointing to an image of the dense and mysterious forest of Equestria, hoping Sombra would recognize it.
“Spectrum Forest,” Sombra replied with a confidence that could only be matched by someone who had won a guessing game without knowing the answers.
Twilight sighed and moved to the next image, which showed the floating city of Cloudsdale in all its splendor.
“Cloudsdale,” she asked, with a tone that combined incredulity and the desperation of someone trying to teach a fish to fly.
King Sombra looked at the image for a moment and then said:
“Skyfall.”
Twilight frowned, trying to understand why someone would name a city “Skyfall” when it clearly had nothing to do with its name.
Finally, she arrived at the last image, which showed the majestic Rainbow Falls, with its brightly colored cascades.
“Rainbow Falls,” she asked, almost with a hint of “please let me go home.”
King Sombra looked at her as if she had just offered him a coupon for something he didn’t need.
“Aetheria.”
Twilight was left speechless, staring at the images as if trying to decipher the last level of an extremely confusing video game.
“Aetheria?” she repeated, almost breathless. “But… these names don’t make sense. Why does everything have a different name in your world?”
Sombra shrugged, with an expression of “why should I care?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. These are the names we use in our realm. Maybe it’s the ‘deluxe’ version of your reality.”
Twilight looked at the floating images, trying to understand how everything could be so different and yet so confusing. She wondered if the spell had created some sort of dimensional bridge where everything had altered names and characteristics, like a very rare version of a furniture catalog.
“So, you’re saying that in your world, everything has a different name?” Twilight asked, trying to stay calm while feeling her brain unravel.
“Not exactly,” Sombra said, crossing his arms as if evaluating the quality of an offer. “It’s more like these places exist in an alternative version of our reality, with their own names and characteristics. Maybe your places and ours overlap in some way, like two worlds shaking hands in a very awkward way.”
Twilight nodded slowly, trying to process the idea while wishing she could take a coffee break.
“Alright, that explains why the names are different,” Twilight said, with a tone of determination despite the evident confusion. “Let’s see if we can find a way to harmonize our realities. If these places exist in both worlds, maybe we’re in a parallel dimension.”
King Sombra nodded, showing a mix of interest and slight exasperation as someone who has had to listen to too many theories about parallel dimensions.
“And how do you plan to do that?” he asked. “Do you have any other spells that might help?”
Twilight thought for a moment and then headed to one of the shelves, pulling out an ancient book on dimensional spells that looked old enough to have its own cobwebs.
“I’ll review some advanced spells that might help us synchronize the dimensions,” she said while flipping through the book. “Maybe we can find a spell that allows you to return to your own reality or, at least, understand why you’re here. Or at least, that you stop giving me absurd names.”
King Sombra watched with caution as Twilight worked on her book. Although he didn’t fully trust her, he was willing to cooperate if it meant finding a solution to his situation. This pony was definitely very different from the Twilight he knew.
