Riddles in the Mist

“Ugh…”

Twilight groaned, her forehead pressed against the table. There were no signs of motivation, no desire to do anything else.

Was it really just a coincidence? Yes, definitely. She had finally heard that voice, that voice. She should feel happy; after a week and half of investigation, she was beginning to see results. But…

“That voice…”

Had she misheard? Well, she was delirious at the time. Maybe she had confused the tones of their voices. She didn’t want to admit it, but the creature’s voice was the same as the dark unicorn she dreaded to remember, with his evil smile and insane glare.

“No… definitely not…” she continued to groan, her face buried in the cold wood of the table.

“This, definitely… it can’t be!” she exclaimed, her voice filled with desperation.

“Maybe, maybe, I was still dazed from dream, and, and, and…” she muttered to herself, her mind beginning to unravel under the pressure.

“I need help.”

Twilight headed to the palace with a mix of hope and anxiety. After weeks of disturbing dreams and growing frustration, she decided to seek the help of Princess Celestia. The entity in her dreams was becoming more and more unsettling, and only the princess could offer the answers she needed.

Upon arriving at the palace, she was greeted by Celestia, who led her to a private room for their conversation.

“Princess Celestia, thank you for seeing me so quickly,” Twilight said, struggling to stay calm despite her agitation. “I have a very serious concern that I need to discuss with you.”

Celestia gave her a warm, understanding smile and invited her to sit down.

“Please, have a seat, Twilight. I’ve been expecting your visit.”

Twilight took a deep breath before speaking.

“I’ve been investigating an entity that’s appearing in my dreams. The situation has been… unsettling. Yesterday, I heard his voice and it reminded me a lot of King Sombra’s.”

Celestia’s brow furrowed with concern.

“King Sombra was defeated and destroyed with the Crystal Heart. The Heart’s magic should have ensured he couldn’t survive. Are you certain it was his voice?”

Twilight nodded seriously.

Celestia’s concern grew as she listened to Twilight. Her mind raced, considering the implications of what she was being told.

“If it really was King Sombra’s voice, that is very troubling. But from a logical standpoint, there’s no way he could have survived. The Crystal Heart erased him completely, leaving no trace of his existence.”

Celestia paused, thinking deeply before continuing.

“Are you sure you heard King Sombra’s voice? It could be that stress is playing tricks on you.”

Twilight found it difficult to explain, especially when she couldn’t even convince herself. She sighed in resignation.

“Yes, Princess… maybe I just need some rest,” she said, preparing to leave.

Twilight then made her way to Zecora’s hut, her mind still troubled by her conversation with Princess Celestia. She needed to see Zecora to explore any knowledge that might help with the mysterious entity in her dreams.

As she approached the hut, she was greeted by the familiar scents of herbs and potions. Zecora emerged from within, a mix of warm welcome and curiosity on her face.

“Greetings, Twilight Sparkle, what brings you here, without a title or banner to steer?” Zecora asked, her voice calm and comforting.

“Is it possible that someone is trying to communicate through my dreams?” Twilight asked, a slight tremor in her voice.

Zecora frowned, her eyes darkening slightly as she pondered the question.

“Threads of fate sometimes weave in a dark and twisted plot. But what could these dreams be that leave you distraught?”

Zecora gestured for Twilight to enter the hut. Once inside, she invited her to sit on a cushion near the table.

“Relax, let peace surround you, my dear,” Zecora said, as she poured some steaming tea into two bowls and placed one near Twilight. “Drink, and perhaps calm you’ll find in this flavor here.”

Twilight took a deep breath before beginning to explain what had happened over the week. She recounted the disturbing nightmares, the unsettling entity in her dreams, and how the creature’s voice seemed like King Sombra’s, despite Celestia assuring her he was destroyed. She left out intimate details and expressed her concern about the reality of her visions and the possibility that something significant was happening.

Zecora stroked her chin thoughtfully before responding:

“The shadow of the King may linger still, his darkness refusing to fade or be still. I sense your distress, but his presence may be a deception; truth is not always clear in this situation.” Zecora settled beside the unicorn with a pensive expression. “Dream magic is a mystery deep and profound, sometimes a message hidden in shadows is found. But what you describe, with shadows and fear, seems more like torment than a message clear.”

Twilight nodded, her anxiety palpable.

“Princess Celestia assured me that King Sombra should have been destroyed by the Crystal Heart’s magic,” Twilight said calmly, before adding, “but the voice and the feeling I’m experiencing seem too real to ignore. I need to know if there’s something I might be overlooking.”

Zecora remained silent for a moment, deeply reflecting. Finally, she turned to Twilight with a serious, reassuring look.

“Sometimes dreams are not what they seem, and our minds can trick us in the night’s gleam. But your worry and distress are real, that much is clear. Perhaps there is something you’ve yet to see, something you’ve overlooked, a hidden key.”

Zecora meditated for a moment more before beginning to gather various herbs and ingredients from her shelves.

“It’s wise to seek the truth in dreams and in the dark of night. I’ll prepare a special brew that will reveal the hidden fight and help you face the challenge with keen insight.” Zecora said as she skillfully began to prepare the elixir.

Twilight watched with interest as Zecora worked, her concentration unwavering. After preparing the potion, Zecora handed it to Twilight.

“Drink this before you sleep, and in your dreams, clarity you’ll find deep. This potion will protect you from the dark and guide your path, but beware, not every vision will be kind; the hidden may be a threat unkind.”

Twilight accepted the potion gratefully.

“Thank you, Zecora. I’ll use it tonight and see what I can discover.”

Zecora nodded, a serious expression in her eyes.

“Be careful, Twilight Sparkle, in the realm of dreams, there are tricks and schemes. Trust in yourself and stay aware, for the truth is sometimes a game rare.”

Twilight thanked Zecora once more before heading to the door, ready to return home. However, just as she was about to cross the threshold, Zecora called out softly from the doorway.

“Twilight, wait a moment,” Zecora said, her tone gentle but firm.

Twilight turned, surprised.

“I sense there’s more to your tale, something you chose not to unveil. Remember that even the smallest detail might be the key to the mystery you seek to unveil,” Zecora said, gazing at her with wisdom in her eyes. “Do not underestimate the power of what you’ve omitted, it might be the key you’ve long submitted.”

Twilight stood still for a moment, letting Zecora’s words resonate in her mind. She knew exactly what the zebra was referring to: those moments of closeness with the creature in her dreams that she had decided to omit. A faint blush colored her cheeks as she considered the possibility. If what she suspected was true, what would she do then? How would she react to the truth she feared to face?

Finally, she nodded silently, thanking Zecora for her insight before leaving with a new perspective in mind.

After Twilight left, Zecora watched the door slowly close behind her.

With a thoughtful expression, she murmured to herself:

“Should I have told her that communication in dreams, where even touch feels real, often awakens strong emotions on both sides?” Zecora paused, then shook her head with a calm smile.

“Mmm, no… she’ll be fine.”
