“—You could talk to me! I know you can!” Twilight said with a pout on her lips.
The creature was lying next to her, its expression showing a hint of annoyance at the pony’s persistence. It growled at her from time to time, as if that might silence her, but it was useless.
It was another day, another dream.
Twilight no longer felt any fear, not even a little, so she started trying other methods.
“Come on, don’t be so...” she was interrupted when she felt a warm touch on her cheek. It had licked her again. Instinctively, Twilight took a few steps back, almost crawling.
“W-what! I told you not to do that again!” she exclaimed but fell silent, keeping her distance.
The creature smiled, visibly satisfied. They were both getting used to each other’s presence, and the creature couldn’t help being a little mischievous with the pony from time to time.
“If you don’t want to answer, fine...” Twilight said, adding in a softer tone. “But we can’t keep this up forever...”
The being simply observed her, sighed, and then got up.
“You’re going to do it again, aren’t you?” Twilight asked, already anticipating what was about to happen.
The creature seemed to smile to the side, entertained, before opening its mouth and moving it as if about to say a word.
Twilight woke up with a sigh of frustration.
“What a childish creature...” she murmured, disappointed and a little annoyed. “But at least I’ve made a lot of progress. I need to do more research and...”
A growl.
Her stomach roared so loudly that it startled her. When was the last time she had had a proper lunch? Lately, she only ate occasional snacks before diving into her research.
“Maybe I should... take a break...” she said to herself as she got out of bed and stretched. “It’s late, I should head to Sugarcube Corner.”
Twilight Sparkle pushed open the door of Sugarcube Corner, entering with a mix of relief and anticipation. The sweet aroma of cakes and cupcakes immediately enveloped her, causing a growl in her stomach. The warmth of the bakery contrasted pleasantly with the cold of the outside air, and the shop’s bright colors offered a welcome distraction from the intense search that had been occupying her.
Mr. Cake, with a broad smile, was behind the counter.
“Welcome to Sugarcube Corner, Twilight! What brings you here today?”
Mrs. Cake emerged from the kitchen, drying her hooves with a towel.
“Oh, Twilight! It’s a pleasure to see you. Would you like to try some of our latest treats?”
Twilight smiled, relaxing in the warm hospitality of the place.
“I was thinking of taking a little break and enjoying something delicious.”
The sound of children’s laughter filled the air as Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake ran around, adding a touch of joy to the scene. Twilight approached the counter, ready for a pause in her busy day.
Mrs. Cake leaned against the counter, looking at her with a sympathetic expression.
“You seem to need a little pick-me-up. How about something extra sweet to lift your spirits?”
Twilight let out a small laugh, nodding.
“Yes, please. Surprise me with whatever you have!”
Mr. Cake, with a sparkle in his eyes, chimed in.
“We’ve just baked a fresh batch of honey-glazed carrot cake. It’s one of our specialties.”
Twilight felt a little thrill of excitement. She had a weakness for that cake. As Mr. Cake spoke, Mrs. Cake gave Twilight a playful pinch on the cheek, her eyes shining with affection.
“Oh, you always know how to tempt our customers, dear.”
Mr. Cake laughed, wrapping his foreleg around Mrs. Cake’s waist and pulling her closer.
“And you always know how to make the sweets even more special, my love.”
Twilight watched the exchange, feeling a warm knot forming in her chest. It was clear they shared a deep bond. To hide the slight blush on her cheeks, she pretended to be interested in the display of cakes.
Mrs. Cake gave Mr. Cake a small nudge with a playful smile.
“Not here, dear. We have customers.”
Mr. Cake chuckled softly, glancing at Twilight, who was trying to act casual.
“Of course. We don’t want to make our customers uncomfortable.”
Mrs. Cake looked at Twilight again, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“Sorry if we got carried away, Twilight. Sometimes we forget where we are.”
Then, she leaned in a bit closer, lowering her voice.
“But between you and me, it’s always more fun to share sweets with someone, especially if it’s someone special.”
Twilight’s blush deepened. The implication behind Mrs. Cake’s words was clear.
Mrs. Cake laughed when she saw Twilight turning red.
“You know, dear, there’s something even sweeter than all these cakes... Having someone special to share them with.” —Mrs. Cake’s eyes sparkled as she studied Twilight—. “Is there someone like that in your life?”
Twilight opened her mouth to immediately deny, but stopped, frowning in a thoughtful expression.
“How do you know if there’s someone like that?”
Mrs. Cake smiled, reading the internal conflict in Twilight’s eyes.
“Well, sometimes the signs are all around. Maybe you just need to open your eyes and see what’s right in front of you.”
She leaned in a bit closer, almost whispering.
“Have you had any special moments or conversations that left you feeling a bit... confused?”
Twilight’s heart began to race as she remembered those moments in her dreams. The intense emotions she had experienced with the stranger made her blush, her mind spinning.
Mrs. Cake noticed the change in Twilight’s expression and smiled knowingly.
“Ah, I see that look. You’ve definitely had some moments, haven’t you?”
Twilight felt as though her thoughts were being read with unsettling ease. She stammered, trying to respond, but the words escaped her.
“I... I need to go!” she exclaimed, standing up suddenly.
Mrs. Cake laughed softly as she saw Twilight get up.
“Are you leaving already, dear? And what about your cakes?” Mr. Cake asked from the back.
“Let her go, dear. She needs a moment,” Mrs. Cake said with a sympathetic smile.
Twilight hurried toward the door, desperate to escape the embarrassment. Mr. Cake, sensing her agitation, simply watched her leave with a kind smile.
to be continued.
