Ambush at Canterlot High
Chapter 2: Day One (The Gymnasium / Courtyard)
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe sun rose on a crisp morning, casting a warm glow over Canterlot High. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, the energy palpable as students filed in. They were greeted by an unusual sight: their lockers were adorned with headbands—red and blue, neatly folded, and waiting to be claimed. The school's grand game had officially begun.
In the hallways, students exchanged eager looks, whispered strategies, and checked their headbands. The competition was already heating up, even before the first bell rang.
Sunset Shimmer, donning her red headband, spotted Rainbow Dash adjusting hers in front of the locker mirror. "Ready to take them down, Dash?"
"Ready?" Rainbow smirked, snapping the headband into place. "I'm ready to win!"
Pinkie Pie popped up between them, her headband askew, a grin plastered on her face. "This is gonna be SO much fun! I brought snacks for everyone—just in case!"
Down the hall, Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna emerged from their offices, already geared up. Celestia's blue headband matched her calm demeanor, while Luna’s red headband made her look especially determined.
"Remember," Celestia called out as students gathered, "This is a test of agility, strategy, and most importantly—fun!"
Luna nodded, her gaze serious. "But don’t think that means we’ll be going easy on you."

As the day progressed, students spread out across the school grounds, each team strategizing their first moves. The rules were simple: eliminate opposing team members using the provided projectiles. Once hit, you were out. But there was a catch—no one knew what the projectiles would be until they were announced.
The intercom crackled, and Cranky Doodle's voice filled the school. "Attention students! The first round’s projectiles are... artichokes!"
In an instant, chaos erupted. The Red and Blue teams darted across the campus, using lockers, benches, and even classroom doors for cover. Artichokes were hurled through the air, spinning like green, spiky grenades.
Bon Bon was the first to be hit, an artichoke bouncing off her shoulder. She sighed dramatically, raising her arms in defeat. "I’m out!" she declared as she left the battlefield, joining Flash Sentry and Thunderbass, both taken out soon after by well-aimed throws from Soarin' and Drama Letter.
With the first round over, the intercom buzzed again. "Next up," Luna announced with a mischievous tone, "butter sticks."
The students stared at each other, puzzled, before laughter erupted. "Butter sticks? Really?" Applejack questioned, just before a stick of butter whizzed past her, courtesy of Trixie Lulamoon.
The slippery projectiles added a new level of challenge. Applejack slipped on her butter stick and was swiftly taken out by a well-timed throw from Sweetie Belle. Meanwhile, Vinyl Scratch was caught off guard by Diamond Tiara, and Apple Bloom was eliminated by Sweet Leaf.
With tensions high, the intercom buzzed one last time. Celestia's voice was clear. "The final projectile: chicken drumsticks."
Scootaloo and Applejack exchanged glances. "It’s time to get serious," Scootaloo said, determination in her eyes.
The drumsticks, heavier and more unwieldy, made this round intense. Snails was the first to go, taken out by a swift throw from Granny Smith. Octavia Melody managed to dodge several incoming drumsticks before being hit by Snips, who was then immediately eliminated by Rarity.
Sci-Twi crouched behind a bench and was focused on the action, calculating angles, and planning her next move. But before she could act, Fluttershy surprised her with a gentle but accurate toss, sending her to the sidelines.
It wasn't long until Sweetie Belle was taken out by her friend, Apple Bloom, and Cranky Doodle was taken out by Granny Smith!
The final bell rang, signaling the end of the day's battles. Both teams gathered in the courtyard, sweaty and tired, but grinning from ear to ear.
"Well, that was something," Soarin' laughed, high-fiving Rainbow Dash.
Celestia and Luna approached the group, smiles on their faces. "You all did wonderfully," Celestia said, her voice full of pride.
"But remember," Luna added with a smirk, "there’s still more to come."
The students exchanged looks, a mix of anticipation and excitement in their eyes. This was only the beginning.
The courtyard buzzed with excitement as Lyra Heartstrings stood before the two teams, a mischievous grin on her face. "Alright, everyone! Before we can move on to the next round, it's time for a side-challenge. And since the Blue Team is down a member, they'll be the ones competing. This is a relay race, but not just any relay race. We've added a few... obstacles."
The Blue Team members exchanged uneasy glances, knowing that Lyra's "obstacles" were never simple. Still, they steeled themselves, ready to give it their all.
"Let's introduce the teams!" Lyra continued, pointing to each group in turn. "On Team 1, we have Rarity, Trixie, Sweet Leaf, and Diamond Tiara. And on Team 2, it's Scootaloo, Tennis Match, Fluttershy, and Principal Celestia. The rules are simple: the last player to finish their leg of the race will face a penalty and be out of the game. One team is safe while 2 members of the other team are safe."
With that, the first racers, Rarity and Scootaloo, took their positions at the starting line, eyeing the thick mud pit in front of them.
"Ready... set... go!" Lyra shouted, and the race began.
Rarity vs. Scootaloo
Rarity hesitated for a fraction of a second as she stared at the mud, her pristine white outfit already stained from earlier challenges. But Scootaloo didn’t wait—she dove into the mud and began crawling with determination.
“Oh, this is simply dreadful!” Rarity groaned as she finally lowered herself into the muck, trying to keep her face as clean as possible. “Why does it always have to be mud?”
Scootaloo, on the other hand, was making quick progress. “Come on, Rarity! Don’t let the mud slow you down!” she called out, her competitive spirit blazing.
Rarity struggled to catch up, but Scootaloo was already out of the mud pit, tagging Tennis Match for the next leg of the race. Rarity reached the end just seconds later, panting as she slapped Trixie’s hand.
“Finally,” Rarity sighed, wiping mud from her face as best she could. “Trixie, it’s all up to you now!”
Trixie Lulamoon vs. Tennis Match
Trixie and Tennis Match bolted toward the next obstacle: a tangled web of elastic strings that snapped back if touched. Tennis Match darted in, using her agility to weave through the web. Trixie, not to be outdone, followed close behind, but with every misstep, the strings snapped at her, slowing her down.
“The Great and Powerful Trixie will not be defeated by mere strings!” Trixie declared, though her progress was less than spectacular.
Tennis Match grinned as she cleared the web and tagged Fluttershy, who looked pale as she eyed the next challenge. Trixie was right behind, finally breaking free and tagging Sweet Leaf.
Sweet Leaf vs. Fluttershy
Sweet Leaf and Fluttershy took off toward a dense forest, their path swarming with bees. The buzzing grew louder as they approached, and Fluttershy hesitated, her instinct to care for animals conflicting with the need to win.
“Oh dear,” Fluttershy whispered, “I don’t want to disturb them…”
Sweet Leaf, however, took a deep breath and dashed through the forest, swatting away the bees with her arms. “Sorry, bees, but I’ve got a race to win!” she muttered, pushing through.
Fluttershy, despite her hesitation, summoned her courage and followed, carefully maneuvering around the bees without harming them. But Sweet Leaf was already through the forest, tagging Diamond Tiara for the final leg.
Diamond Tiara vs. Principal Celestia
The final obstacle loomed ahead: one of Micro Chips’ inventions, a mechanical beast that had gone rogue. Diamond Tiara and Principal Celestia approached cautiously, sizing up the malfunctioning contraption.
“Great,” Diamond Tiara muttered. “As if this day couldn’t get any worse.”
Celestia, however, remained calm. “We’ll need to outsmart it,” she said, her tone quiet and commanding.
Diamond Tiara rolled her eyes. “Yeah, easy for you to say.”
The two circled the machine, looking for an opening. Suddenly, the invention whirred to life, swinging its arms wildly. Celestia ducked under a swipe and dashed to the finish line, but Diamond Tiara wasn’t so lucky. The machine caught her off-guard, sending her stumbling back.
“No!” Diamond Tiara cried, trying to regain her footing, but it was too late. Principal Celestia was already crossing the finish line, victorious.
Lyra stepped forward, a sympathetic but firm look on her face. “Diamond Tiara, I’m sorry, but you’re out.” Diamond was suddenly ambushed with a barrage of dice thrown towards her.
Diamond Tiara’s face twisted in anger and frustration. “This is so unfair! I didn’t even want to do this stupid race in the first place!”
“Rules are rules,” Lyra said with a shrug. “Your penalty is to roll around in the mud until you’re completely covered.”
“What?!” Diamond Tiara exclaimed, but the Blue Team urged her on as Lyra threw erasers at her.
"Okay, okay! Jeez!" Diamond yelled, hurt by the barrage of erasers thrown at her.
Reluctantly, and with much grumbling, Diamond Tiara trudged back to the mud pit. She hesitated, glaring at Lyra, who simply gestured for her to get on with it. With a defeated sigh, Diamond Tiara lowered herself into the mud and began rolling around, each movement slow and deliberate.
“Ugh, this is disgusting!” she complained, but there was no escaping the punishment. She rolled until she was coated head to toe in thick mud.
Finally, Lyra called an end to the challenge. “Alright, everyone, that’s it for Day 1! Rest up, because tomorrow is going to be even tougher.”
As the teams dispersed, Diamond Tiara stood there, covered in mud and seething with resentment. But the day was over, and all she could do was prepare for what lay ahead.
