Ambush at Canterlot High
Chapter 3: Day Two (The Cafeteria)
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe cafeteria was completely transformed for the second day of the Ambush game. Long tables were pushed against the walls, and the floor was cleared to create an open arena for play. The air buzzed with anticipation as both teams gathered, the Red Team exchanging nervous glances while the Blue Team seemed unusually calm.
Lyra, the game master, stood at the center of the room, holding a small, glittering object. "Alright, everyone," she announced, her voice echoing in the large space. "Today’s level is going to be a bit different. We’re mixing things up with a little hide-and-seek twist."
She smiled mischievously. "Red Team, you’re the seekers. But here’s the catch—you’ll be locked in the closet while the Blue Team hides. Once you’re out searching, keep your eyes peeled because they won’t just stay hidden. One of them will pop up at intervals, trying to catch you off guard."
The Red Team exchanged uneasy looks. They knew this was going to be challenging. Lyra’s grin widened as she continued, "Oh, and before I forget, there’s a small difference in numbers today. Nine members of the Blue Team and eight of the Red Team, which means one of you has to sit out. Who’s it going to be?"
Rainbow Dash raised her hand with a smirk. "I’ll sit this one out. You guys got this," she said confidently, glancing at her teammates. "Besides, I’ve got a quiz to ace back in class. Good luck, Red Team!" With that, she turned and jogged out of the cafeteria, leaving the rest of her team behind.
Lyra nodded approvingly. "Alright, Red Team, into the closet you go. Blue Team, you have five minutes to hide. Use them wisely."
As the Red Team shuffled into the closet, the Blue Team scattered across the cafeteria, quickly finding hiding spots. The atmosphere was tense as they crouched behind overturned tables, nestled in dark corners, and squeezed into tight spaces. Lyra counted down the minutes, and when the time was up, she unlocked the closet door.
"Game on!" she called.
The Red Team burst out of the closet, immediately spreading out to search for their opponents. The cafeteria, usually a place of socializing and meals, was now a battlefield. Every shadow seemed suspicious, every corner potentially hiding an ambush.
Scott Green, a member of the Red Team, was the first to let his guard down. He turned a corner too quickly and was met with a surprise—a potted fern launched directly at him from above. He yelped as it made contact, signaling his exit from the game.
"Scott Green is out!" Lyra’s voice rang out over the noise, a slight tone of amusement in her voice.
Not long after, Drama Letter, another Red Team member, thought she had found a safe path. She was wrong. A shower of gemstones cascaded from a makeshift trap, knocking her off balance and out of the game.
"Drama Letter is out!"
Granny Smith, usually sharp and alert, was caught off guard by a flying piece of ham, which splatted against her with surprising accuracy. She sighed, shaking her head as she walked off the field.
"Granny Smith is out!"
Sunset Shimmer, usually the most cautious, was caught by surprise when a pair of rubber iguanas fell from the ceiling, startling her enough to lose focus. She was declared out as well.
"Sunset Shimmer is out!"
The chaos continued until Pinkie Pie, always cheerful and bouncy, was taken down by a barrage of jelly beans, slipping on some of them and falling to the ground. She giggled as she exited the game, clearly enjoying every moment despite the loss.
"Pinkie Pie is out!"
The Red Team was dwindling in numbers, and the tension was mounting. But that wasn’t the end of their challenges for the day.
After the game, Lyra gathered the remaining members of the Red Team for a special announcement. "As part of today’s level, there’s a side challenge. A Fear Factor-style eating contest."
The Red Team groaned, knowing they were in for something unpleasant. On a table nearby, plates of muffins filled with stinkbugs & fish eyeballs, glasses of blended cockroaches, and bowls of habanero peppers were set out.
"You each have to finish your plate," Lyra instructed. "And the last one to finish gets a penalty. The loser will have to drink an extra glass of something special—blended worms. If you can’t do it, you’re out of the game, and the whole Red Team has to spend the rest of the day in the classroom doing nothing but schoolwork. It'll be like detention!"
The challenge began, and the Red Team reluctantly dug in. The smell alone was enough to turn their stomachs, but they forced themselves to eat. One by one, they finished, faces contorted in disgust, but it was Silver Spoon who struggled the most. Her hands shook as she tried to down the stinkbug/fish eyeball muffin, and by the time she moved on to the blended cockroaches, she was visibly pale.
"Come on, Silver Spoon, you can do it!" one of her teammates encouraged, but she shook her head, gagging as she tried to take another sip. She managed to power through it before she dined on habanero peppers, one pepper at a time. Despite her mouth burning, she managed to down the hot pepper dish.
When she reached the final glass of blended worms, it was clear she was at her limit. Tears welled up in her eyes as she pushed the glass away, unable to continue.
"I can’t… I just can’t," she whispered, defeated.
Lyra nodded solemnly. "Silver Spoon, you’re out of the game. And as for the rest of the Red Team—you’ll be spending the rest of the day in the classroom. No games, no fun, just schoolwork."
The Red Team groaned in unison, as Silver Spoon was pelted with more jelly beans. There was no point in arguing with the rules. They trudged to detention, heads hung low, knowing they’d have to reflect on their performance and spend the rest of the day doing nothing but schoolwork. The cafeteria, once full of energy and competition, slowly returned to its usual calm as the Blue Team emerged victorious once again.
