My life in Equestria
The Return of King Sombra
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe calm of a beautiful sunny morning reigned over Ponyville. The nine friends, inseparable despite the distance and the responsibilities of each, had made an appointment to celebrate Mady's return after a long and perilous mission. Mady was an alicorn, endowed with an astronomical beauty mark that gave her a unique power: that of manipulating the stars. This allowed him to control the moon and sun, like Celestia and Luna, as well as rule the stars, constellations, and other celestial wonders. Her assignments often kept her away from her friends, but she went out of her way to be there when her schedule allowed.
On this special day, Mady was returning from one of her most arduous missions. The north wind blew softly in her wings, carrying her gracefully to the place of their meeting. She flew above the green fields and glittering rivers, a soft starry glow floating around her, a sign of the magic that emanated from her presence. Her thoughts were filled with fatigue, but also with excitement at the idea of reuniting with her friends after such a long absence.
POV MADY
After days of fierce fighting against mysterious forces that sought to disrupt the cosmic balance, I could finally breathe. Every beat of my wings brought me closer to Ponyville, and the thought of seeing my friends again warmed my heart. As I gently landed on the ground, a bright light burst all around me. The stars, like silent guardians, were always with me. No sooner had my hooves touched the ground than I felt a familiar presence leap upon me.
"MAAADYYYYYY !!" Twilight shouted as she threw herself at me, her wings flapping happily.
I laugh softly, trying to regain my balance under the onslaught of an overexcited Twilight.
"I've missed you so much!" she exclaimed before stepping back a little to look me up and down.
Rainbow Dash, who was floating not far above us, hissed in admiration when she saw me. "Wow, you're amazing! This outfit... It's really cool!"
I smile, amused by the enthusiasm of my friends. "Thank you. It is a Solar Moon armor, an ancient artifact forged to protect those who manipulate the stars."
Rarity, her eyes sparkling at the sight of the luminous details of my armor, approached with an admiring look. "These stones! They are absolutely beautiful! Where did you find them? They are so rare!"
"These are Solar Moonstones, infused with the magic of the stars. They allow me to focus and channel cosmic magic."
"Subliiiime!" exclaimed Rarity, unable to take her eyes off the shining armor.
Spike, who had stood back, nodded vigorously, his eyes round with fascination. "yes, it's true that they're really beautiful."
I couldn't help but smile when I saw the wonder on their faces. With a gentle gesture, I conjured up nine small shards of Solar Moonstones, glittering fragments that began to float in front of my friends.
"Here, a gift for each of you," I said, offering them a piece of these precious stones.
Their eyes lit up with gratitude. Each delicately took on its brilliance, holding it like a precious treasure. Then, to thank them for their patience and support during my absence, I decided to offer them a show worthy of the magic that flows through me. With a simple movement of my wings and intense concentration, I summoned the stars that dotted the sky, despite the fact that the day was still very much present. The stars formed majestic constellations, the planets seemed to dance around us, and the moon appeared for a moment to shine brightly. It was a haunting cosmic ballet, a dance of the stars that lit up the sky in a way that none of them had ever seen.
Silence of wonder reigned, interrupted only by Pinkie Pie's cries of joy. "IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!" SHE CRIED, JUMPING UP, UNABLE TO CONTAIN HER EXCITEMENT.
Rainbow Dash did a pirouette in the air, her eyes shining with admiration. "I've never seen anything so cool in my life, except when I joined the Wonderbolts of course!"
I landed gently on the ground, my wings folding behind me. "I'm glad you liked it."
But as the wonder began to subside, Starlight Glimmer, puzzled, approached me. "I didn't know that other unicorns or pegasus could manipulate the moon and the sun... Only Celestia and Luna can do that, right?"
I nodded softly, a slight smile on my lips. "It's true that the task of controlling the sun and moon is reserved for princesses, but my beauty brand gives me a unique affinity with the stars. It allows me to manipulate the stars, the planets, and of course, the moon and the sun."
Twilight frowned, as if trying to understand. "I remember you had astronomical powers, but controlling the stars like that? It's incredibly powerful!"
"It's something I've learned to master over the years. After your coronation, Twilight, I trained a lot to understand the extent of my powers."
But no sooner had I finished my sentence than suddenly, thick black smoke began to swirl around us, enveloping everyone in a suffocating mist. A sinister laugh echoed in the air. The black smoke materialized into an all-too-familiar form: King Sombra, the tyrant of the Crystals, stood there with a smirk on his face.
"Mady, be careful! Sombra is right behind you!" screamed Twilight in panic.
I turned abruptly, my heart pounding, but instead of facing it, a strange feeling of déjà vu washed over me. ''Sombra?''
Applejack frowned, confused. "Wait a minute... Do you know him?!''
I sighed, knowing that I couldn't avoid this explanation. "Yes... It's a long story."
Rainbow Dash crossed her arms, her suspicious gaze. "We have all our time."
Sombra smiled, amused by the situation. "I see you haven't told your friends everything, Mady. Too bad."
I gave him a furious look. "Sombra, you had to stay at the castle! It was our agreement!"
He raised an eyebrow, looking nonchalant. "It takes you forever. I was starting to worry."
Twilight, still reeling from his presence, intervened. ''How long have you been worried about someone?!''
Sombra looked at her with a smirk. "Since Mady became my queen."
Silence fell heavily on the group. The girls, shocked, shouted in chorus: "WHAT?!"
I rolled my eyes. "Well, listen to me, there's an explanation behind this..."
Rainbow Dash burst out. "So you just followed him?! You are his... queen?!''
I stared at them insistently. ''Will you let me finish?!''
The girls exchanged confused looks but fell silent, giving me the opportunity to explain.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of their gaze weighing on me. "After Twilight became a princess, Sombra returned. He arrived in Canterlot, but instead of triggering further chaos, he offered a deal to the princesses. He promised to stop his attempts at conquest in exchange for something: a queen. I made the decision to volunteer."
They all stared at Sombra suspiciously, but Twilight seemed the most unsettled. "But why did you accept such an offer?"
I sighed deeply. "At the time, I knew I had to do something to calm the situation. Sombra was powerful and dangerous. I thought that maybe, by accepting, I could influence him from within and prevent him from causing even more trouble."
Sombra, who was still standing aside, smiled indecipherably. "Let me remind you that it was not a whim. Mady took a big risk for everyone. The deal we made made it possible to avoid a war."
Twilight folded her arms, still skeptical. "And how did he react to this offer? Did you really convince him to change, or is it just a façade?"
I continued patiently. "At first, I intended to manipulate him to change his behavior. But what I didn't anticipate was that he expected me to actually become his queen, not just in appearance. Over time, despite everything I had planned, I learned to understand it. We had sincere conversations and he revealed his past to me."
Sombra nodded in agreement. "She is right. I shared my story with her, which helped forge some understanding between us."
Pinkie Pie, always full of curiosity, asked with a big smile, "And what's this thing?"
Sombra seemed to hesitate for a moment before answering. "It's a complicated story, full of pain and regret. Maybe one day, I will be able to tell you about it. But for now, I respect Mady's decision not to reveal everything."
Applejack, frowning, chimed in, "But he's caused us a lot of trouble in the past. He almost killed us and even destroyed the elements of balance."
I gave Sombra a stern look, who had stepped aside a little, visibly uncomfortable. "Yes, he caused a lot of harm. But he's changed, and that's hard to accept, I know that. Sombra, you're going to have to explain the situation more clearly to my friends."
Sombra frowned, but he knew he had no choice. "Fine, I'm going to do it. But I'd rather stand back while you discuss it."
I sighed, eyes closed, then turned to Twilight and the others. "Once the deal was done, I thought I could manipulate Sombra and force him to change his behavior. But the reality turned out to be much more complex. He expected me to become his queen really, which upset my plans. Instead, we got to know each other, and despite everything I thought of him, I discovered facets of his personality that I didn't suspect. Yes, he made mistakes, but he also showed signs of change."
Twilight seemed even more puzzled, but she was trying to figure it out. "So, are you really in love with him?"
I turned away slightly, my cheeks tinged with a slight flush. "I didn't want it to happen like this. Feelings can't be controlled, and I found myself experiencing emotions that I had never felt before. Sombra showed me aspects of life that no one else could teach me. I will not use him to do evil, and I will only use his magic to resolve conflicts and manage his anger."
The girls looked at each other, their expressions mixing doubt and understanding. Applejack spoke with a note of compassion. "I understand better now. I guess if it can make you happy and you think he's changed, then I'm willing to make an effort to try to get along with him."
I smile, grateful. "Thank you, Applejack. It means a lot to me."
I turned to the sky, watching the stars begin to appear. "I'll have to go back now. If you would like to visit me, I am staying at the Château des Crincies Noirs. Goodbye, my friends."
As I made my way to the castle, I felt a constant presence, a strange sensation that followed me all the way. Once I arrived, I called Sombra.
"Sombra, I'm here," I said as I entered the castle.
Sombra appeared, her face full of concern. "You seem concerned. What's going on?"
I tried to reassure him. "It's nothing, really. I just felt followed during the ride, and the discussion with the girls was not easy."
Sombra seemed to relax slightly, but her gaze was still worried. "I'm sorry for that. If anyone has followed you, I should go on guard duty to check."
I shook my head, trying to show her that it wasn't necessary. "No, don't worry about that. I'm just a little tired."
At the same time, someone knocked on the door. I walked to the entrance to open the door, but Sombra approached, trying to intervene. "Let the maids do that."
I smiled at him, waving my hand. "It doesn't bother me. The maids already have a lot to do."
I unlocked the door, discovering to my surprise the three princesses in front of me.
"Hello, Princess," I said, welcoming the three princesses respectfully. "What are you doing here at this hour?"
Princess Luna smiled, her eyes shining with affection. "I really wanted to see my favorite student again. I couldn't wait."
Princess Cadence nodded with a warm smile. "We also heard about the reveal and wanted to make sure everything was okay for you. ’’
I nodded in agreement. "Yes, it didn't go well, but it could have been much worse."
Princess Celestia put a hoof on my shoulder, comforting. "You had a lot of courage to face this situation. Don't forget that we are here for you."
I looked at Sombra who was standing behind me, a little behind. "Sombra, come here."
He stepped forward. ''Yes, Mady?''
The princesses saluted him in turn with cold dignity. "Good morning, King Sombra," they said in a calm but serious voice.
I glanced at Sombra, looking a little amused. "Please excuse this big beta. He's in a bad mood today."
Sombra tried to protest. "No, it's not..."
I put my hoof in front of his mouth, cutting it. "Shut up, thank you very much. I'll really have to teach him politeness, that's not right at all."
Princess Luna smiles, trying to lighten the mood. "I hope he treats you well, despite everything."
I answered him confidently. "Don't worry, Luna. Sombra is very caring and not at all aggressive. You just have to know how to understand it."
Princess Cadence nodded, visibly reassured. "Yes, you're right."
Princess Celestia turned to me. "We will leave you now. If you need anything, please let us know."
"Of course, Princess," I replied gratefully. ''Good evening to all!''
I closed the door, returning to Sombra, who seemed a little annoyed.
"You're tiring me," I tell her with a tired smile.
Sombra replied with an amused smile. "It's not my fault that I'm still a little clumsy with all this."
"Idiot," I replied, laughing. "Maybe it would go over better if you tried not to be so grumpy and apologize sincerely."
Sombra grunted softly. "Making excuses is not my strong point, and you know that."
I gave him a light blow on the side. "Please make an effort for me. At least do it to please me."
Sombra sighed but agreed. "Okay. I'm only doing it for you then."
I jumped up and down with joy, my heart filling with happiness. ''Thank you!''
Sombra smiled and shook her head. "What a kid, sometimes."
We went together to the large living room, where we made ourselves comfortable to discuss everything that had happened, sharing moments of tranquility and complicity. As the evening progressed, and I knew that there was still a long way to go, but with my friends by my side and a growing understanding between Sombra and me, I felt that we could overcome any obstacle together. We settled comfortably in the large salon of the Château des Cristas Noirs, a spacious and bright place, where the walls glittered like diamonds under the glow of candles. The soft moonbeams filtered through the windows added a magical touch to the atmosphere. I sat down on a velvet sofa, while Sombra settled into an armchair in front of me. A soothing silence set in, interrupted only by the crackling of the flames in the fireplace.
Sombra finally broke the silence. "So, how did things go with your friends?"
I gave him a reassuring smile. "It went better than I thought. They were understanding, even if they are still a little skeptical. But I think they'll make an effort to get to know you better."
Sombra seemed relieved but still concerned. "I'm happy to hear that. I know I've caused a lot of problems in the past, and I understand why they can be suspicious. I'll do my best to prove that I'm different now."
I put a hoof on his, trying to reassure him. "That's all I ask of you. I believe in you, even if it's difficult for others. Changing perceptions takes time, but I'm willing to help."
Sombra nodded in agreement. "Thank you, Mady. It means a lot to me. I am aware that my past actions have left scars, but I really want to make amends. I have changed, and I hope that this will be reflected in my future actions."
I smile at him, grateful. "I know you're sincere. I don't want you to feel too overwhelmed."
At that moment, a noise outside caught my attention. I got up and walked to the windows, scanning the darkness. Sombra, noticing my agitation, also stood up.
"Did you hear anything?" he asked, his gaze watchful.
"Yes," I replied, my eyes narrowed. "I felt followed during the journey earlier. And this noise... I'm not sure what it is."
Sombra nodded determinedly. "Let me go and check. Stay here and lock the doors, just to be safe."
I watched him go, my heart beating a little faster. I quickly complied with his request, making sure all the exits were securely closed before returning to sit on the couch. My mind was in turmoil, thinking back to the events of the day and the potential repercussions.
A few minutes later, Sombra returned to the living room, looking serene. "There is nothing to fear. It was probably just an animal or a strange wind. But I'm going to stay vigilant, just in case."
I thanked him with a reassuring smile. "Thank you, Sombra. I feel a little better now."
We continued to discuss everything and nothing, the tensions of the day slowly dissipating. Sombra spoke of his recent experiences, the difficulties he had faced, and the lessons he had learned. He had a lighter tone and seemed to really want to redeem himself, which comforted me.
I asked him a curious question: "So, what are your plans now? You mentioned that you want to help resolve conflicts, but what about your own aspirations?"
Sombra thought for a moment before answering. "I want to use what I've learned to do good. I know that I will never be able to completely erase my past, but I want to try to compensate for it as much as possible. Maybe I could work with the other kingdoms to promote peace and cooperation."
I nodded, admiring his determination. "I think it's a great idea. Redemption is a long and difficult journey, but every small step counts. And I'll be there to support you all the way."
Sombra looked at me with touching sincerity. "Thank you, Mady. Your trust in me is more precious than you can imagine. I hope I can prove that I deserve this trust."
We sat comfortably on the sofa, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the pleasant company. As the night wore on, I felt that, despite the challenges ahead, we had taken a big step towards a brighter future. Ultimately, the path to reconciliation and understanding was paved with constant effort and patience. As I looked at the stars through the large window, I realized that every star, even in the dark, had a glow that could illuminate the way. We were going to face a lot of things, but together, with the support of our friends and our own determination, we could overcome obstacles and build a better future.
Sombra and I settled into a comforting calm, each reflecting on the day that had passed and the many challenges that lay ahead. We knew that the road would be strewn with challenges, but we were ready to face the challenges together, with hope and determination.
