Chapters The final Pegasus pushed the last raincloud into place, though it wasn't a perfect fit. With their task complete, the weather ponies soared away from the darkened cloud, leaving behind a raging rainstorm that pounded against the walls of the filly’s home. From her bedroom window, she had a clear view of the tumultuous scene outside. Inside the house, the waves of conversation crashed against the filly’s ears. With each frustrated sentence exchanged between her parents, another tear would leave her.
Her room was adorned with posters showcasing the heroes of Equestria. Among them, her favorite depicted three ponies donning blue and yellow flight suits, wearing shaded goggles. They stood in a confident line, striking a pose against the backdrop of a bustling city skyline. At the bottom of the poster, the words "Altius Volantis" were inscribed in ink—a call to action that inspired her even during the darkest moments. Adjacent to it hung a printed artistic portrait of Princess Twilight, standing before a stained-glass window adorned with a resplendent purple star at its center. The portrait captured her regal elegance, but her solemn expression conveyed a deep sense of loneliness. The heroes that adorned the filly’s room were a tapestry of triumph surrounding a natural-born failure.
“I don’t know how else to say it, hun. She’ll always be playin catch up with her classmates,” her father’s voice rang out, tinged with weariness. The scrape of a chair against the floor indicated his movement away from the kitchen table. Her mother's voice took its turn.
“That’s just one doctor’s diagnosis. Maybe we need another opinion- “
“-And what good will that do our little filly?” her father interjected. “She needs to know the truth, and we shouldn’t run away from it either.”
A long sigh emanated from the kitchen, blending with the filly's sobs and the relentless downpour outside. Each word from her parents carried a heavy weight, cutting into her spirit and weighing down her fragile body.
“We need to tell Feather Wisp now, or she’ll be chasin a dream that’ll never happen. Her wings won’t ever be big enough to make her the great flyer she wants to be,” her father said.
Feather Wisp turned away from the slender crack in her bedroom door and buried her muzzle under the comforting embrace of her bed sheets. A whimper escaped her lips as a thunderous boom shook the very foundations of the house. She squeezed her eyes shut. The hope that flickered in her heart began to fade away until it was reduced to a fragile spark, surrounded by a cold, unfair truth.

Ten Years Later
A bright splash of morning light kissed her eyelids. The morning songbirds sang their melodies with a cheerful tune, filling the air with music. Once the pale-colored Pegasus felt the heat of the sun’s rays on her coat, she sprung out of bed and onto the floor as her face planted against the wooden foundation. Feather Wisp let out a groan as she gently rubbed a hoof against her freckled cheek. The stubborn blankets had ensnared one of her hind legs, unwilling to let her go. With determination, she managed to wriggle free from their clutches, emitting a grunt of triumph. Casting the defeated blankets onto her bed, Feather Wisp trotted over to a mirror that sat atop a dresser in the corner of her room. Her vibrant mane, a fusion of orange and white, appeared tangled and unruly. Feather Wisp's coat bore disheveled patches, evidence of a restless night's slumber. After tending to her tousled mane and tail, she straightened her posture and patted herself down. She then reached for a tape measure and fastened it to the dresser mirror. With deliberate care, she extended the tape measure to encompass the length of her left wing.
“A couple of millimeters bigger since last month,” Feather Wisp said, her voice full of nervous anticipation.
Feather Wisp collapsed the tape measure and set it on the dresser. She hastily brushed her teeth and grabbed the pair of saddlebags that leaned against the foot of her bed. Before Feather Wisp left the room, her amber eyes scanned across the various posters that covered her walls. Their edges were rolled and torn from years of exposure. Maybe I should get a frame for them someday , she thought. The pale-colored Pegasus nodded to herself, then trotted off into the kitchen to start her morning routine.
The kitchen was tidy, with pots and pans hung near the cabinets, just a hoof’s reach away for use. A chair sat crooked near the kitchen table, as if it was beckoning Feather Wisp to come and sit down. A plate of golden-brown pancakes steamed atop a ceramic plate on the table, covered in butter, syrup, and rounded pieces of fruity cereal. A rich breakfast aroma traveled through the air into Feather Wisp’s nose. Feather Wisp’s mother hummed a sweet melody from the corner of the kitchen near the stove. She wore a blue and yellow apron, two colors that clashed terribly against her soft orange coat. It wasn’t her first choice of apron, but it was her daughter’s favorite. Feather Wisp tossed her saddlebags against the nearest leg of the kitchen table and jumped into the chair to gorge herself on the well-made cuisine.
“Good morning, Fisp! Did you sleep well?” her mother asked with a comforting smile.
Feather Wisp nodded her head and let out a muffled “Mhm” as she devoured her breakfast.
“You went all out this time, Mom.”
“Well, of course. It’s a big day for you.”
Feather Wisp shrugged her shoulders. “It’s just a mock exam. It’s not that serious.”
“Aren’t you excited? You get to show all your classmates just how hard you’ve been training recently,” her mother said.
An audible gulp came from Feather Wisp’s throat.
“Yeah… I get to show my classmates…”
Feather Wisp’s mother picked up the empty plate on the table and ran a hoof through her daughter’s mane to comfort her.
“Don’t be so nervous, Fisp. I know you’ll do great.”
The tome of the grandfather clock in the living room interrupted their conversation.
“Goodness, eight o’clock already?” her mother asked.
“Uh, gotta go, Mom. Don't wanna be late for school. Love you, see you soon!” Feather Wisp said.
Feather Wisp snatched up her saddlebags and dashed toward the front door. She clicked on her horseshoes with urgency and reached for the doorknob. Feather Wisp figured if she hurried to school, the walk on the way there might ease her growing nerves.
“Wait, Fisp!”
Her mother's voice stopped her in her tracks. The pale-colored Pegasus turned around and galloped in place.
"What is it, Mom? I gotta go!"
Her mother approached her with a warm smile. Feather Wisp's breath caught in her throat.
“I just want you to know that I’m really proud of you,” her mother said, her voice filled with genuine admiration.
A slight smile formed on Feather Wisp’s face. She embraced her mother tightly. The warmth Feather Wisp felt from her mother’s hug comforted her and helped to temporarily ease her mind of self-doubt.
Feather Wisp released her grip and turned toward the front door. Without looking back, she swung it open and stepped out onto the vibrant streets of Cloudsdale. The world seemed to hold its breath; the air charged with anticipation. As the door closed behind her, her mother's voice echoed through the narrow gap.
“Good luck, Fisp. Do your best!”
The bright morning sun bathed the billowing streets of Cloudsdale in a golden glow. Griffins and Hippogryphs soared through the bright blue sky and flew synchronized formations over the greenhouses. The air hummed with the energetic buzz of activity, as travelers from all corners of Equestria filled the nearby runway. Vibrant posters of discounts and sales related to the city’s business district were advertised on every street corner. Various aromas ranging from perfume to street food and sweets swept through the air.
The sound of laughter and chatter filled the pale-colored pony’s ears, which blended harmoniously with the occasional melodic trills of birds overhead. Feather Wisp paused at familiar crosswalks and patiently waited for her turn to step onto the marble pathways. The anticipation of the mock exam weighed on Feather Wisp's mind and injected a hint of nervousness into the usually buoyant atmosphere of Cloudsdale. Graduation loomed on the horizon, and with it the chance to prove herself to her peers. The thought of a positive future filled the pale-colored Pegasus with a mix of excitement and apprehension.
As Feather Wisp approached the school’s campus, she slowed her stride. Each step toward the main entrance felt heavier than the last. Thoughts of self-doubt and inadequacy began to fill her mind. She took a deep breath to steady her nerves and brushed aside the onslaught of negative thoughts. With renewed determination, she marched into the school building only to be nearly trampled by the erratic flow of her fellow students. She ducked and dodged her way through the main hall to stay on course. The pale-colored Pegasus traveled through the rushing sea of students toward the hallway that led to her assigned homeroom class. However, before Feather Wisp could make it to her destination, a voice cut through the ambient chatter and called out to her.
“I’m surprised you showed up, Shorty Wings. I thought you would have stayed home today.”
Feather Wisp groaned to herself as she turned to face the source of the voice. An abrasive female Pegasus stood roughly five leg lengths away from the pale-colored pony. Three other female Pegasi were posted by her side, each of them wearing a wicked grin.
“Of course I’d show up, Cloud Glider. It’s part of our assessment, for our final grade- “
Feather Wisp’s sentence was cut short by the sudden approach of Cloud Glider. She pushed her muzzle into Feather Wisp’s face. Feather Wisp’s head sank as she backed away from Cloud Glider’s aggressive advance.
“And what, you think a defect like you will pass? Save yourself the embarrassment and go back home,” Cloud Glider said. Her demeaning words echoed through the hall.
Cloud Glider shoved Feather Wisp aside, causing her body to collide with a row of nearby lockers. A resounding thud came from the metallic surface as her body slammed into it. The abrasive mare strutted confidently toward the far end of the hallway, distancing herself from Feather Wisp. The three mares accompanying her brazenly stuck out their tongues in a mocking gesture toward Feather Wisp before trailing behind Cloud Glider. Feather Wisp clenched her jaw as anger started to build up inside her.
“Hey! What makes you think you can act like that?” Feather Wisp asked.
Feather Wisp’s shout stopped Cloud Glider in her tracks. The abrasive mare turned to face Feather Wisp with a look of contempt and irritation on her face.
“Do I even have to answer that?”
Cloud Glider swept her hoof across her trim yellow physique, emphasizing her athletic form. With a confident gesture, she proceeded to run her hoof through her sleek blue and white mane.
“Just look at me. I was destined to be great, unlike a no-good short-winged loser like you. Weak Pegasi who can’t even fly are useless to the rest of us. I wish you’d get that through your thick skull, Shorty Wings.”
A growl escaped the pale-colored Pegasus.
“I can fly! I’ve been training really hard, you’ll see,” Feather Wisp said.
“Hover and float, sure. But actually fly? For more than two seconds? Stop giving yourself false hope.”
Feather Wisp slowly approached the gang of mares. Cloud Glider smirked as Feather Wisp started to lose her temper. However, before the two Pegasi’s confrontation could escalate any further, the school’s morning bell started to ring.
“Ah, that’s too bad. I really wanted a reason to kick your flank today. Guess I’ll just have to do it on the mock exam,” Cloud Glider said.
Cloud Glider walked off into an adjacent hallway. Her posse stuck close to her and laughed as they talked amongst themselves. Feather Wisp’s anger quickly faded as a feeling of inadequacy filled its place.
“Why does she have to be so hurtful?” Feather Wisp asked.
The pale-colored Pegasus trudged to her assigned homeroom class. She snuck through the door and into her assigned seat just as the roll call had started. Her mind drifted off as her teacher called out the other students’ names. I have to prove her wrong , Feather Wisp thought. The pale-colored Pegasus stared through the row of windows on the left side of the classroom. Outside, the instructors were preparing the obstacle course for the mock exam. Feather Wisp’s eyes widened as she studied the course’s meticulous design. Large rings and patches of clouds formed a vast and intricate circuit. A dull sound clawed at Feather Wisp’s ears as her eyes scanned across the challenge that awaited her. Her mind was so focused on the obstacle course that she didn’t hear the teacher repeatedly call her name.
“Ms. Wisp? Ms. Wisp!”
Feather Wisp jumped out of her seat as the teacher yelled her name. The other students in the classroom laughed as the teacher shook his head.
“Here!” Feather Wisp said.
The teacher gave Feather Wisp a disgruntled look before he returned to the roll call. Feather Wisp sunk into her seat and buried her muzzle into her hooves to hide the blush that had overtaken her. During their homeroom class, the students were given vague instructions on how they would be taking the mock exam. Each of them would report to the locker rooms after their final class to grab their flight suits and meet the instructors on the school flight field. Feather Wisp couldn’t decide if the lack of information made her feel better or worse.
***
Feather Wisp sat in the school cafeteria at a lone table. She tapped a hoof against the marble floor as the nervous energy within her continued to build. The ambient chatter and aroma of various fruits and vegetables did nothing to distract her from her thoughts. She nibbled at a carrot stick as the Pegasi instructors outside practiced loops and dives. The pale-colored Pegasus unconsciously flapped her short wings. A small feather detached from her right wing and landed beside her food tray. She stared at the small feather with contempt, then blew it off the lunch table and onto the floor.
To distract herself, she shifted her focus to her food tray and listened to the conversations of the students around her.
“Yeah, pretty weird stuff. They’re supposed to be the wealthiest family in Canterlot. Maybe even all of Equestria,” a nearby student said.
Feather Wisp tilted her head toward the direction of the voices. Her left ear flickered as she concentrated.
“What’s a couple of rich Unicorns doing in Cloudsdale, anyway?” a student asked.
“Probably buildin that fancy mansion over on Soarin Street.”
Unicorns? In Cloudsdale? Feather Wisp thought. She was about to speak to the nearby group of Pegasi but was stopped by the intrusive ringing of the lunch bell. The students within the cafeteria hurried back to their classes as the next group of students filled the space behind them. The thought of how she would approach the mock exam had completely overtaken Feather Wisp’s mind, so much so that she didn’t remember a single lesson she sat through during the rest of her classes. Her wings quivered as the butterflies in her stomach danced in anticipation. No matter what she did, she couldn’t stop the growing sensation of dread for the mock exam.

The warm afternoon air blew across the school’s flight field. The sun shined down on the obstacle course above, casting its silhouette onto the soft imported grass. Feather Wisp adjusted the pair of flight goggles on her head. They were a little too big for her, and the flight suit she wore hugged her coat with an uncomfortable embrace. The teachers gathered each of their homeroom students together and made them form a line at the starting section of the obstacle course. The Head Instructor walked onto the shoddy wooden stage at the center of the flight field. A singular microphone stood atop the stage and squeaked as the Head Instructor approached.
“Good afternoon, students. I hope all of you have been training hard these past few months.”
The Head Instructor adjusted the clipboard that rested in the pocket between her right wing and her body.
“Now, the rules of this mock exam are simple. Each of you will be called up to the starting line in groups of eight students.”
The Head Instructor used her wing to hold the clipboard in front of her face. She scanned over its information, then turned to face the crowd of students once again.
“Each of you has been assigned a random number. These numbers are written on a stickable sheet of paper that will be passed out to you by your homeroom teachers before we start the mock exam. Please place this sheet of paper on a visible part of your body near your flank. The goal of this mock exam is to make it through the obstacle course as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you have any extra questions about the exam, ask your homeroom teacher, not me.”
The Head Instructor walked off stage as pre-recorded trumpets and horns signaled the preparation period for the mock exam. The teachers of each homeroom class passed out small sheets of paper to their students. Feather Wisp’s teacher gave her a tiny square sheet of paper with the number fifteen written on it. She took a deep breath, then attached the piece of paper to the left side of her flank. Beads of sweat started to form on her forehead. Her breathing became rapid as negative thoughts started to fill her head once again. The pale-colored Pegasus was suddenly shaken from these negative thoughts as she felt a hard bump against her side. A familiar yellow Pegasus walked up next to her, wearing an arrogant smirk.
“It’s good that I’ll be in the first batch. I need everypony to see that they don’t stand a chance against me,” Cloud Glider said.
Feather Wisp glanced at the number four that was attached to Cloud Glider’s side. Deep down, she felt a sense of relief.
“It’s too bad, though. I really wanted to crush you in the race,” Cloud Glider said.
Feather Wisp rolled her eyes at Cloud Glider’s words.
“Give it a rest, Cloud Glider. You better hurry, or you’ll miss your chance to show off.”
Cloud Glider faced the starting line. The other students in her group were already lined up and ready to go.
“Trust me, this whole thing will be over before you know it. Make sure not to blink, Shorty Wings.”
Cloud Glider burst into flight. The force of her speed blew air into the surrounding students, causing them to stumble over and lose their balance. Feather Wisp dug her hooves into the ground and shook her head. By the time she looked back toward the starting line, Cloud Glider was already low to the ground with her wings spread. The Assistant Instructor nodded his head as Cloud Glider raked her hoof into the puffy ground. The first group was given a ten-second countdown. Once the countdown was complete, a whistle was blown to indicate the start of the race.
Cloud Glider once again burst into flight. She blasted the other examinees away and sped through the first set of obstacles with ease. She looped around the ring-shaped clouds and cut zigzags through the marble pillars. As she sped through the course, a blue and yellow trail followed her body. Within just over a minute, Cloud Glider had finished the mock exam without making a single mistake. She landed on the ground and dug her hooves into the clouds, sliding to a stop. Cheers erupted from most of the student body as the Assistant Instructor watched the rest of the first group pass over the finish line. The Head Instructor walked up to Cloud Glider with a grin as she checked her clipboard.
“Amazing job, Ms. Glider! You almost beat Rainbow Dash’s high school record by a couple of seconds. Just what I’d expect from the sister of a Wonderbolt.”
A big grin formed on Cloud Glider’s face. She looked out into the sea of students, who stared at her, mouths agape.
“That’s nothing. In a couple of years, I’ll be better than Rainbow Dash was at her peak, just watch,” Cloud Glider said.
As Cloud Glider received cheers from some students and whispers circulated among others, Feather Wisp's body began to shake. She had no idea that Cloud Glider had gotten to such a level in the past few months. The Assistant Instructor called for the next group of eight students. Feather Wisp took a deep breath to calm herself. You can do this Feather Wisp, just focus on passing the mock exam , the pale-colored Pegasus thought. She stepped toward the startling line in hesitation, the nerves within her growing with each step.
Amongst the other examinees of the second group were a couple of Griffins and a Hippogryph. Feather Wisp didn’t know much about how well these creatures flew, but unlike Cloud Glider, she was only determined to do her best, not beat the other students. All eight examinees lined up at the starting line. Feather Wisp’s heart pounded. Her breath was rapid. The Assistant Instructor raised his front right leg in the air as the countdown began. Feather Wisp focused on the obstacle course in front of her and wiggled her body in preparation.
Once the Assistant Instructor blew his whistle, the other students took off toward the obstacle course. Feather Wisp’s short wings flapped with a constant buzz. After a couple of seconds, her body began to rise off the ground. She floated through the first set of hoops in the obstacle course. The first set of obstacles had been conquered without any mistakes, but she was sorely lacking in speed. Wondering if this would affect her final score, she pushed on. The rows of marble pillars were up next. Feather Wisp braced herself and leaned left and right to avoid the pillars. However, she scraped her sides against them as she weaved in and out. The pale-colored Pegasus fought through the pain of her wings’ exhaustion and continued through the course. Though the other students in her group had surged far ahead, she reminded herself to focus solely on passing the exam, letting go of any concerns about their progress.
The last set of obstacles was in Feather Wisp’s view. The loop-the-loop portion of the obstacle course was one that Feather Wisp had struggled with the most while training at home. She had yet to get it right, but today, she would change that. With all her might, Feather Wisp increased her speed and dove down. She pulled her body up after she passed through the loop. However, her body refused to ascend. Helplessly, she plummeted through the billowing clouds toward the school’s flight field. A scream escaped her as she dropped in altitude. The students on the ground let out a collective gasp as they watched the pale-colored Pegasus fall through the clouds and splash into a shimmering pond of liquid rainbow. The pond's surface rippled and swirled in response to Feather Wisp's impact.
Feather Wisp emerged from the vibrant pond. Her legs trembled as she wiped her goggles. Mustering the strength to move forward, she took a faltering step, only to lose her balance and stumble onto the ground. Pain pulsed through her head. Her eyes felt like they were going to roll out of their sockets. Surrendering to the discomfort, she turned over and laid on her back, gazing up at the vast expanse of the afternoon sky. Concern was etched across The Assistant Instructor’s face as he stood over the pale-colored Pegasus. With a resigned gesture, Feather Wisp removed the flight goggles from her head and let them drop onto the ground beside her.
“Did I pass?” Feather Wisp asked.
The Assistant Instructor let out a sigh as he shifted his gaze from his stopwatch to his clipboard.
“Well, unfortunately, you didn’t finish the race, and your total time upon crash landing was four minutes and twenty-three seconds. You had fourteen collisions with obstacles in the course and failed to meet the minimum wing power requirement. I’m sorry, Ms. Wisp. I’m afraid you did not pass the mock exam.”
Feather Wisp turned toward a lone cloud in the sky. She closed her eyes and sighed as the reality of her failure began to weigh on her. The warm touch of the sun's rays on her eyelids caused her tears to sting as they joined the vibrant puddle beneath her. Once again, she was reminded of the world’s cold, unfair truth.
The mare scrubbed at the last spot of batter in the mixing bowl. As stubborn as it wanted to be, it was no match for her. Aurora Wisp squeezed the soggy sponge between her hooves until it yielded not a drop of water. Taking a cloth, she meticulously polished the freshly cleaned mixing bowl before placing it in the drying rack. Aurora Wisp examined the finished cereal cake that sat on the kitchen table with a content smile. Her focus shifted to her daughter's bedroom door. As she approached Feather Wisp’s room, the pulsating beat of punk rock music grew louder. Aurora Wisp took a deep breath to gather her composure and knocked on the bedroom door. Nopony answered.
“Fisp, are you okay?” Aurora Wisp asked.
The punk rock music continued to blare from within Feather Wisp's room. Undeterred, Aurora Wisp knocked on the door once more, hoping for a response. Finding none, she made the decision to turn the doorknob and enter. As Aurora Wisp stepped into the room, her gaze was immediately drawn to the stereo system situated at the heart of her daughter's "music zone." It was from there that the energetic tunes emanated. Adjacent to the stereo stood two guitars, one acoustic and the other electric, silently resting in their stands.
Aurora Wisp's ruby eyes roamed across the assortment of posters adorning the walls. Some showcased bands that Feather Wisp was fond of, while others depicted various locations throughout Equestria. In one corner, an aged Wonderbolts inspirational poster shared space with a printed artistic portrait of the Princess. However, it was the sight of a rounded bump beneath the covers in the center of Feather Wisp's bed that captured Aurora Wisp's attention.
Aurora Wisp approached the stereo system and pressed the pause button to halt the blaring punk rock music. The sudden cessation filled the room with silence, offering a moment of respite. Her hooves created a soft, rhythmic beat as she traversed the wooden floor, making her way to the far side of her daughter's bed.
“Fisp? I made your favorite dessert. Why don’t we sit down on the couch and enjoy some of those old cartoons we used to watch together?” Her gentle voice carried across the room, filled with a hopeful invitation.
A groan resonated from the bump beneath the covers. Slowly, the bump shifted, revealing a short, pale-colored wing peeking out from underneath the sheets. A tiny feather detached itself from the wing, drifting across the bed toward Aurora Wisp. She caught the feather before it could touch the ground and proudly tucked it into her curly pink mane. However, her expression transformed from pride to concern as her daughter’s sobs shattered the brief silence. Aurora Wisp released a long, weary sigh. With a heavy heart, she gently pulled back the sheets. Feather Wisp’s freckled cheeks were damp. Her eyes were puffy and irritated. Aurora Wisp felt a pang of anguish shoot through her chest at the sight of her daughter's vulnerable state.
“Fisp… come on, now. You did your best; I know you did.”
Feather Wisp sniffed as she wiped her eyes. Her voice was frail and quiet.
“But my best wasn’t enough, Mom… “
Aurora Wisp shook her head in gentle disagreement. With a careful motion, she hopped onto an empty space on the bed beside Feather Wisp.
“It’s okay if it wasn’t enough this time. But if you stop trying, you won’t ever get to where you wanna be. You’ve made some amazing progress over these last few years.”
Feather Wisp's voice trembled as she responded. “But I’ve only got one month until the actual exam. If I don’t pass, they’re gonna hold me back a year.”
“Fisp,” Aurora Wisp began with a tender smile, “if I know anything about my daughter, it’s that she always figures out how to do the impossible. Remember what the doctors said when you were younger? They were certain you’d never be able to do more than float in place.”
Feather Wisp let out another sniff, her short wings fluttering in response.
“I’ve watched you improve with every training session in the backyard. I know how determined you are to prove yourself to the other Pegasi. It makes me proud to be your mother. After all, I know something most ponies don’t.”
Feather Wisp turned to face her mother.
“What’s that?”
“I know my daughter is the hardest working Pegasus in all of Equestria, and I know, without a shred of doubt, that one day she will soar among the very best flyers in the land.”
A smile escaped Feather Wisp's lips, a gentle chuckle accompanying her response as she playfully tapped her hoof against her mother's side.
“Thank you, Mom. I don’t know if I fully believe you, but I do feel a little better. By the way, why do you have one of my feathers in your mane?”
Aurora Wisp gently brushed a hoof through the right side of her mane, careful not to disturb the feather's placement.
"I like to keep them as a symbol of good luck," she explained with a smile.
Feather Wisp rolled her eyes, a hint of skepticism in her voice. “Good luck? I don’t see how that could be the case.”
Aurora Wisp embraced her daughter tightly, planting a loving kiss on her forehead.
“The fact that I have an amazing daughter like you is proof that it’s good luck. Don't worry, Fisp. You'll figure things out because that's who you are—a pony who never gives up.”
Aurora Wisp ran her hoof through Feather Wisp’s mane.
“And you’re also a pony that loves cereal cake. Luckily for you, there just so happens to be one in the kitchen with your name on it. Come on, I know it’ll cheer you up.”
With a leap of excitement, Aurora Wisp hopped off the bed, beckoning Feather Wisp to follow her. Trotting off toward the kitchen, she radiated anticipation. Feather Wisp shook her head, a faint smile gracing her lips, and rolled out of bed. As her hooves made contact with the floor, she paused for a moment and gazed at the old posters adorning the corner of her room. With a nod of determination, she turned away from the posters and made her way out of the bedroom, heading toward the kitchen.

Forty minutes and three pieces of cereal cake later, Feather Wisp found herself engaged in a hard-fought battle as she suffered from food paralysis on the couch. She focused her attention on the television screen, absentmindedly rubbing her satisfied stomach. Meanwhile, Feather Wisp's mother had momentarily stepped into another room to retrieve a stack of mail. She returned to the couch; a collection of colorful envelopes perched on top of the stack. Aurora Wisp began sifting through the pile, her eyes drawn to a particular envelope of a vibrant yellow hue. She opened the envelope and silently read the contents of the letter to herself. Feather Wisp leaned over to catch a glimpse of the sender's name or the nature of the letter.
“Is it a letter from Dad?” Feather Wisp asked.
“It’s from Auntie Borea. She wanted to know if I was ready to return your grandmare’s antique necklace to her.”
Feather Wisp tilted her head, a hint of confusion evident on her face.
“Antique necklace?”
“Yep. One of the links from your grandmare’s favorite necklace broke, so I told your aunt I’d fix it. Since we’ve been so busy preparing for your mock exam, I completely forgot to give it back to her.”
Feather Wisp’s mother turned toward the kitchen, her gaze settling on the half-eaten cereal cake sitting at the center of the table.
“Still gotta clean that up, too. Fisp, could you do me a favor and run that necklace down to your aunt for me? I’m sorry for the short notice, I know it’s a bit far to travel.”
Feather Wisp smiled at her mother's request, nodding her head in agreement.
“Sure! I haven’t seen Auntie Borea in a while. Plus, I could use some calorie burning after that cake.”
Aurora Wisp returned the smile, grateful for her daughter's willingness.
“Thank you, Fisp. Just make sure to be back before it gets too late, okay?”
“Will do!” Feather Wisp said.
Aurora Wisp disappeared into an adjacent room, only to return with a beautifully adorned heart-shaped necklace. Carefully, she slipped the necklace into a fresh envelope and gave it to Feather Wisp. The pale-colored Pegasus waved goodbye to her mother before tucking the envelope securely into her saddlebags. With a click of her horseshoes, she swung open the front door, stepping out into the busy streets of Cloudsdale once more.
***
The pale-colored Pegasus trotted through the bustling streets of the city. After a fifty-minute journey, Feather Wisp found herself standing at the grand gates of Cloudsdale's most affluent neighborhood. The upscale area boasted magnificent rainbow arcs, immaculately groomed clouds, and artfully crafted waterfalls that adorned the sky. Sprawling marble mansions were perched atop imported grassy hills and billowing foundations of clouds. Retired celebrities, business ponies, and esteemed members of famous flight teams populated the sidewalks of the gated community.
Feather Wisp continued her journey toward her aunt's house. She couldn't help but feel a wave of excitement as she recognized a few athletes whom she and her father had always cheered for. Their familiar faces added a touch of exhilaration to her day. As Feather Wisp approached Soarin Street, her eyes caught sight of a familiar yellow Pegasus surrounded by a group of mares. Realizing her need for concealment, Feather Wisp dived into a nearby bush, folding her wings tightly to minimize any chance of being noticed. From her hidden vantage point, she could overhear snippets of conversation among the group of mares as the yellow Pegasus strolled by the bush, unaware of Feather Wisp's presence.
“Hey, Cloud Glider, know anything about this new place?” one of the mares asked.
Cloud Glider halted in front of the bush, directing her sapphire gaze toward the half-finished mansion. Its exterior boasted a striking display of pristine marble architecture, while the interior was a maze of scaffolding and a myriad of construction materials.
“It’s quite a big project. It might end up being bigger than my parent’s house,” Cloud Glider said.
One of the mares pointed to a stack of vibrant purple and blue rugs that shined with encrusted gemstones.
“That looks like one of the specialty items from the boutique in Canterlot. My mother ordered some of those a couple of weeks ago.”
Cloud Glider nodded in agreement with the mare's observation, then turned away from the construction site. Feather Wisp trembled with fear, hoping to avoid detection by the group of mares.
“If the builders brought that many specialty items, then it must mean a very wealthy Pegasus is moving in. I bet the Lavender family is building this place, too,” Cloud Glider said.
The group of mares gazed in awe at the magnificent structure before following the yellow Pegasus, their attention diverted.
“Aren’t those the same Unicorns that built your parent’s house?” one of the mares asked.
Cloud Glider's face twisted with a mixture of annoyance and disgust at the mare’s question.
“Unfortunately. I gotta think about it every time I visit.”
Cloud Glider and the group of mares gradually distanced themselves from the bush, their voices fading into the background until only the melodious tunes of nearby birds remained. Feather Wisp cautiously emerged from her hiding spot, taking a moment to survey her surroundings and ensure that the coast was clear. Her gaze then fixated upon the imposing, unfinished mansion standing before her. A symphony of hammers and power tools clashed behind the mansion. The Lavender family? Feather Wisp pondered, contemplating the rarity of encountering a Unicorn in Cloudsdale these days. With her mind filled with questions, the pale-colored Pegasus initially resumed her journey toward her aunt's house. However, she abruptly halted in her tracks.
“No, I have to deliver the necklace. What would I even say if I talked to a Unicorn?” Feather Wisp asked.
Taking a couple of hesitant steps down the sidewalk, Feather Wisp paused once again as the distant voices of the construction ponies resonated from the mansion's backyard. Her curiosity got the better of her, enticing her to temporarily set aside her current objective and venture closer to investigate. I'll just take a quick look around and then leave, Feather Wisp thought. The pale-colored Pegasus covertly maneuvered around the perimeter of the mansion, ensuring to keep a low profile to avoid detection by the construction ponies.
In the mansion's expansive backyard, a vast empty pool and a meticulously designed garden stretched out before Feather Wisp's eyes. A sizable group of workers encircled a distinguished blue Unicorn, attired in an impeccable suit. His sleek, dark mane was slicked back with precision. A well-kept bushy mustache adorned his muzzle. This was the first time Feather Wisp had seen a Unicorn up close, and she couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe and intrigue. While the majority of the mansion's perimeter was cordoned off by an ornate fence, boasting intricate decorations and a sturdy stone base, the section enclosing the garden remained unfinished. Feather Wisp understood the risks involved, but her desire to get a closer look at the dapper Unicorn overwhelmed her caution.
Feather Wisp cautiously approached the garden area, navigating through the gaps in the unfinished fence. As the pale-colored Pegasus entered the garden, she was greeted by a gentle, melodic hum that resonated through the air, accompanied by the delicate tinkling of chimes. The captivating sound grew in intensity as she ventured deeper toward the heart of the garden. In the center of a sunlit clearing stood an elegant black Unicorn. Her flowing mane cascaded in hues of purple, gracefully reaching past her shoulders. A mesmerizing sight met Feather Wisp's eyes as the Unicorn's horn emanated a vibrant, dark purple glow that pulsed in harmony with her every breath. Well-crafted decorative glasses sat upon her face, adding to the aura of wisdom the Unicorn carried. With purposeful grace, she moved behind a row of bushes, her head lowering in a gesture of quiet contemplation as she focused her attention on the ground.
Feather Wisp found herself in a perplexing predicament. She wanted to get a closer look but didn’t want to risk getting caught by the black Unicorn. As she pondered her options, an idea suddenly sparked in her mind. With a swift scan of the garden's towering trees, Feather Wisp's gaze settled on a plan. Her wings buzzed as she lifted herself into the air, ascending to a nearby canopy. Peering over the edge of the foliage, she observed the black Unicorn engrossed in writing within a small journal, placed beside her saddlebags. The Unicorn leaned back and took a deep breath. Her horn flickered with magical energy as a few nearby branches glowed and began to float around the clearing in a circular motion. Feather Wisp's eyes widened in awe, captivated by the Unicorn's extraordinary display. The pale-colored Pegasus leaned in closer, her curiosity once again getting the best of her. However, in her momentary distraction, Feather Wisp lost her balance. A feeling of weightlessness swept over her for a fleeting instant before she tumbled through the branches, crashing unceremoniously onto the ground below.
With a groan, Feather Wisp rubbed her head, feeling a mixture of embarrassment and disappointment. Her gaze shifted toward the black Unicorn, who had become aware of her presence. The Unicorn slowly retreated, taking cautious steps backward.
“Who are you?” the Unicorn asked.
“Ow… don’t worry, I was, uh, just leaving,” Feather Wisp said.
Struggling to regain her composure from the crash, Feather Wisp stumbled slightly as she stood up. She shook her head, wincing as a sharp pain reverberated through her skull.
“Were you hiding in that tree?” the Unicorn asked.
“Um… kinda? Ugh, I tried to stop my fall, but my wings couldn’t pull me back up in time.”
As Feather Wisp flapped her short wings, a couple of small feathers drifted down, gently coming to rest on the dirt below. The tension in the Unicorn's body seemed to subside. Feather Wisp's face flushed crimson with embarrassment, and she instinctively lowered her head, retreating slowly.
“I’m really sorry, I promise I wasn’t trying to stalk you or anything. I’ve never seen a Unicorn practicing magic before. It looked so pretty and cool, I just- “
“-Pretty… and cool?” the Unicorn interjected; her curiosity piqued.
Feather Wisp nodded her head with excitement.
“Yeah! The way you made all those sticks glow and float around you was super rad.”
With a burst of enthusiasm, Feather Wisp spread her wings and flapped them joyfully. The Unicorn observed her short wings with a thoughtful expression.
“Why do you have such short wings?” the Unicorn inquired, her amethyst gaze fixed on Feather Wisp's unique feature.
Confusion flashed across Feather Wisp's face. Her ears flattened as she folded her wings back in, avoiding eye contact. She scraped at the dirt with her front right hoof, hesitating before responding.
“It’s just how I was born. It’s a rare condition, but it happens to a few… lucky Pegasi.”
The Unicorn continued to study Feather Wisp's wings for a few more moments before a warm smile graced her lips.
“Well, I think they are quite fascinating. The fact that you try to fly despite your condition is… inspiring.”
Feather Wisp raised her head, her gaze meeting the Unicorn's.
“You think so?” Feather Wisp asked.
“I do. You must be really in tune with your flight magic.”
Feather Wisp tilted her head inquisitively.
“Flight magic?”
The Unicorn gracefully walked over to her journal, flipping through her notes.
“This is wonderful. I’ve never had the chance to engage in extended conversation with a Pegasus before,” the Unicorn said. Her eyes were alight with curiosity and intrigue.
Feather Wisp observed as the Unicorn flipped through her journal, her anticipation growing.
“Well, I guess that makes sense. Things in Equestria have been getting weird recently. Though it’s hard to believe you haven’t talked to a lot of Pegasi, since your family is well connected and all,” Feather Wisp said.
The Unicorn sighed softly.
“My dad handles most of the talking and business practices. He only wants me to watch and listen when I travel with him.”
Feather Wisp's gaze wandered to the towering, unfinished mansion in the distance, its grand structure reaching above the treetops of the garden. The pale-colored Pegasus turned her attention back to the Unicorn as she closed her journal and skillfully stowed it away in her saddlebags using her magic.
“What’s your name?” the Unicorn asked.
“I’m Feather Wisp.”
The Unicorn bowed her head respectfully.
“Pleased to me you, Feather Wisp. My name is Midnight Lavender.”
Feather Wisp hesitated briefly before bowing her head in return, respecting the Unicorn's customs.
“Oh, uh… pleased to meet you, too.”
“How did you end up in the backyard of an unfinished mansion?” Midnight Lavender asked.
Feather Wisp took a moment to gather her thoughts, preparing to share her story.
“Well, It’s kind of a long story. I was supposed to take an envelope to my aunt who lived in the neighborhood. But I heard Clou- er, some other Pegasi talking about this mansion, and they said a couple of Unicorns were overseeing the construction project. Since I’ve never seen a Unicorn up close before, I wanted to check it out. I guess I got a little carried away and relied too much on my wings to keep me hidden.”
Feather Wisp rubbed the sore spot on her head. Meanwhile, Midnight Lavender settled down in the clearing, positioning herself next to her saddlebags and adjusting her glasses.
“If you don’t mind me asking, Feather Wisp, why exactly is it difficult for you to fly?”
Feather Wisp once again averted her gaze, her voice tinged with vulnerability.
“My wings aren’t as developed as other Pegasi my age. It’s harder for them to get me off the ground. I know it may sound silly to most ponies, but even though I have this condition, I still want to follow my dreams.”
“Your dreams?” Midnight Lavender asked.
Feather Wisp's voice brimmed with determination. “Yeah! I want to be one of the greatest flyers in Equestria. I wanna prove to everypony that I’m not useless and that I can be great too.”
Midnight Lavender carefully examined Feather Wisp's condition once again.
“So, it's the weakness of your wings that makes flying challenging for you, is that correct?”
“Mhm…” Feather Wisp said.
“Have you tried using your flight magic to compensate for the lack of wing power?”
Feather Wisp pondered for a moment, her brows furrowing.
“I think I remember hearing about that when I was younger, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to a flight camp.”
A smile of eagerness graced Midnight Lavender's face as she seized the opportunity to impart her knowledge. With a flick of her magical abilities, she retrieved a notepad from her saddlebags. Flipping it open to a specific page, she extended it toward Feather Wisp. The title of the notepad entry caught Feather Wisp's attention: “The Application of Magic in Regard to Flight.”
“Even though Pegasi possess physical wings, it is the magic they utilize that enables them to fly, not solely the power of their wing muscles. Their wings alone cannot generate enough lift. I learned a spell at Princess Twilight's school in Canterlot that allows me to study the residual trails of magic left behind by other pony tribes, and I-"
Feather Wisp interrupted, a spark of realization in her eyes.
“-Wait a minute… so you’re saying, if I learn how to use flight magic, then I can fly better?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender nodded her head, her expression confirming Feather Wisp's deduction.
“Yes.Despite the limitations of your wing strength, I’m sure you could at least correct the amount of lift needed to keep you from falling out of trees.”
Feather Wisp's jaw dropped, a surge of excitement coursing through her. The sudden possibility of fulfilling her lifelong dream filled her with newfound energy.
“Can you teach me?” Feather Wisp asked.
“I could. It wouldn't take too long to teach, although mastering it may require some time,” Midnight Lavender said, amusement evident in her voice.
Feather Wisp's exuberance caused her to bounce in circles, her excitement overflowing.
“Yes, yes, yes! This is so great. Thank you, Midnight Lavender!”
Midnight Lavender chuckled at Feather Wisp's enthusiasm, finding it contagious. Raising one hoof into the air, she signaled for attention.
“I’ll teach you, on one condition.”
Feather Wisp halted her circular bouncing, giving her full attention to Midnight Lavender.
“Of course, anything!”
“I'll teach you on the condition that you assist me with my studies,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp's reply came without hesitation.
“Sure! I’ll be the most helpful pony there is.”
Midnight Lavender's smile grew at Feather Wisp's eager agreement.
“I’m glad to hear it.”
Feather Wisp unfurled her wings, a wide smile gracing her face. However, a lingering thought from Midnight Lavender's earlier statement found its way into her mind.
“Wait… you said you learned a spell from Princess Twilight’s school in Canterlot? Like THE Princess Twilight?”
Midnight Lavender nodded, a hint of pride in her response.
“The one and only.”
“Wow… I can’t believe you study magic with the Princess,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender's expression grew somber.
“Well, I used to study at her school but, not anymore.”
“Really? How come?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender's gaze dropped to the ground as she gathered her thoughts.
“Family… I’ll leave it at that for now.”
Feather Wisp respected Midnight Lavender's desire for privacy and refrained from pressing further. Just as she was about to ask another question, a voice called out from the center of the backyard, interrupting their conversation.
“Midnight, darling, are you still in there?” the voice asked.
Midnight Lavender turned her attention toward the voice and let out a sigh.
“It seems my father is ready to go for the day,” Midnight Lavender said.
A touch of disappointment reflected in Feather Wisp's expression.
“Aww… we didn’t get to talk for very long.”
Midnight Lavender proceeded to fetch her saddlebags and secured them onto her back. Returning to Feather Wisp, she presented a pen and held a notebook aloft with her magic.
“Here, write down your address, and I’ll meet you at your place tomorrow. Does six p.m. work for you?”
Feather Wisp's eyes sparkled with excitement as she nodded.
"That’d be great!"
Taking the pen into her mouth, Feather Wisp jotted down her address, ensuring Midnight Lavender had the necessary information. The Unicorn carefully placed the notebook into a small compartment on the side of her saddlebags and bid farewell to Feather Wisp.
“It was nice meeting you, Feather Wisp. I look forward to tomorrow.”
“Same here. Have a good rest of your day,” Feather Wisp said.
With a final wave, the Unicorn ventured into the dense foliage at the entrance of the garden. Feather Wisp watched as Midnight Lavender disappeared from sight. The afternoon sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over Cloudsdale. The floating city was enveloped in a picturesque blend of orange and pink hues.
Feather Wisp's voice carried a note of concern as she glanced toward the darkening sky.
“It's getting late. I hope Mom isn't too worried...”
Her gaze then fell upon her abandoned saddlebags, nestled in the dirt at the edge of the clearing. The memory of the unfinished task she had momentarily set aside resurfaced in her mind.
“Aww, shoot, I gotta go!"
Feather Wisp snatched her dirty saddlebags and hoisted them onto her back. She dashed out of the garden, her heart brimming with anticipation for the arrangement she had made with Midnight Lavender. Each stride she took was fueled by excitement as she raced toward her aunt's house. As she galloped down the street, her eyes caught sight of a pair of Pegasi gracefully maneuvering through the air, their elegant loops tracing patterns around a fluffy patch of clouds. The sky was adorned with roaring multi-colored waterfalls, their vibrant arcs blending with the numerous rainbow lakes that dotted the neighborhood.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, its waning orange rays painted Cloudsdale in a gentle, ethereal glow. The afternoon breeze caressed Feather Wisp’s coat with a soothing touch, accompanying her as she drew nearer to her destination. Butterflies danced within her stomach, their graceful fluttering a stark contrast to the anxious ones she had experienced during the mock exam. These fluttering wings carried with them a sense of hope for the pale-colored Pegasus, as tomorrow held the promise of new possibilities and the blossoming of a potential friendship with her newfound companion.
Her hooves thundered upon the wooden floor, burying the wave of her mother’s questions. Feathers detached from Feather Wisp's wings as she darted back and forth between her bedroom and the kitchen. Her mother picked up the stray feathers scattered on the ground, tenderly tucking them into her own mane.
“Fisp, I told you I’d prepare the house for your new friend. Why don’t you hang out in your room while I take care of things?” Aurora Wisp asked.
Feather Wisp trotted toward the far side of the kitchen and opened the pantry. She assessed the available snacks and brought them closer to the shelf's edge. Her mother let out a sigh and settled down at the kitchen table.
“I’m… surprised you made friends with a Unicorn. With all the drama between the three tribes nowadays, it’s a wonder they’d show up in Cloudsdale at all.”
Feather Wisp returned from the pantry, placing two boxes of fruity cereal bars on the kitchen table.
“I’ve never seen a Unicorn up close before yesterday, and she said she can help me with my flying problem,” Feather Wisp said.
“I’m glad to hear that somepony wants to help you, Fisp, but do you even know how this Unicorn is going to fix your situation?”
Feather Wisp settled into a kitchen chair beside her mother.
“I’m guessing she’s gonna teach me how to use flight magic. She sorta mentioned that it would help make my condition easier to deal with, but I didn’t get a chance to ask her more about it. That’s what today is for!”
Aurora Wisp studied the pale-colored Pegasus with a concerned expression.
“Fisp… I-”
Before Aurora Wisp could finish her sentence, the doorbell chimed, interrupting their conversation. Feather Wisp leaped out of her chair and dashed toward the front door.
“That’s gotta be her!”
Feather Wisp eagerly grasped the doorknob and swung the door wide open. Sunlight, tinged with a golden hue, flooded the entrance and cast a silhouette of the Unicorn on the welcome mat. Passersby Pegasi outside on the streets stared in bewilderment at the sight of a Unicorn in the suburban area of Cloudsdale. Aurora Wisp slowly made her way toward the front door, her steps filled with trepidation. Feather Wisp gestured for the Unicorn to enter the house, instructing her to remove her horseshoes and place them in the corner beside her own. The Unicorn's demeanor remained composed as she surveyed the interior of the home. From her mane, adorned with a blend of purple hues, to her neatly groomed tail, she exuded an air of elegance that captivated Feather Wisp's mother. Once the Unicorn had taken off her horseshoes, Feather Wisp introduced her to Aurora Wisp.
"Mom, meet Midnight Lavender. Midnight, this is my mom," Feather Wisp said, pointing to each of them in turn.
Midnight Lavender observed Aurora Wisp from head to hoof, her expression softening into a relaxed smile. Aurora Wisp cleared her throat before speaking.
“Nice to meet you, Midnight Lavender. You can just call me Aurora if you’d like. Would you like something to drink or eat?”
Midnight Lavender bowed her head toward Aurora Wisp.
“Nice to meet you as well, Mrs. Wisp. I’ll take a cup of tea if it isn’t too much trouble.”
Aurora Wisp nodded in agreement.
“Of course, I’ll start a pot right away. Fisp, is there anything you’d like?”
Feather Wisp pondered for a moment, scratching her head.
“I don’t usually drink it, but tea does sound nice...”
“Are you two going to play out in the backyard?” Aurora Wisp asked.
Feather Wisp's gaze shifted between her mother and Midnight Lavender, her freckled cheeks flushing with a reddish hue.
“Not play, Mom! We’re going to study and train.”
Midnight Lavender's smile transformed into a subtle grin.
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I meant study and train in the backyard,” Aurora Wisp said.
“Mhm! Are you still going to that dinner party with your friends tonight?”
Aurora Wisp's gaze turned toward the calendar hanging in the kitchen, where a large, red circle was drawn around the third day of the month.
“Ah, I’m glad you brought that up. I almost forgot about it. I need to go get ready, Fisp. Dinner is slow cooking in the pot. It should be done in about forty minutes,” Aurora Wisp said, her attention shifting to the stove as she made some adjustments. “Are you two gonna be all right while I’m gone?”
Feather Wisp rolled her eyes in response.
“Yes, Mom. We’re adult ponies. We’ll be fine.”
Feather Wisp trotted off toward her bedroom, with Midnight Lavender following closely behind. A persistent grin adorned the Unicorn's face.
“Young adult ponies!” Feather Wisp’s mother said.
With a thud, the door to Feather Wisp's room closed. Aurora Wisp swiftly placed a tea kettle on the stove before hurrying into her own bedroom.
***
Feather Wisp retrieved various pieces of training equipment from her closet, while Midnight Lavender rummaged through the decorative saddlebags nearby. The Unicorn took notice of the numerous posters adorning Feather Wisp's bedroom walls and began reading aloud the names of the bands.
“Silvermane… Breaking Bronco… Stable Chomps. Interesting musical preferences.”
Feather Wisp let out a grunt of effort as she retrieved a pair of clip-on wing weights, which had been modified to half their original length.
“What can I say? I like what I like. What kind of music are you into?” Feather Wisp asked.
“Hmm... I enjoy orchestral pieces, operas, smooth jazz, and I do have a bit of a soft spot for punk rock, particularly when I’m feeling energetic. I’ve been fortunate enough to see Silvermane perform live at the Canterlot concert hall once.”
Feather Wisp's search for exercise equipment came to a sudden halt as she gasped, turning her head toward Midnight Lavender with an excited smile.
“You’ve seen them live? That’s awesome! Are they as good in concert as they are on their records?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender chuckled, amused by Feather Wisp's enthusiasm.
“I’d say they are. Have you ever been to a concert before?”
Feather Wisp shook her head.
“Nope. Mom never had the time to take me since she had to worry about getting me to school on time, cooking, cleaning, and all the other adult things.”
"What about your dad? I noticed the pictures on the wall next to the kitchen of you and him at the Cloudsdale derby," Midnight Lavender said.
“My dad? He’s been on tour a lot lately. Being a Captain in the Equestrian Guard comes with a lot of responsibilities. Especially nowadays.”
Midnight Lavender took a sip of tea from the cup that floated beside her.
“That’s understandable. It's not common for the guards at Princess Twilight's castle to have time off, except during major holidays."
“I can’t believe you’ve met the Princess. Is she as super smart and elegant as she seems? What am I saying, of course she is,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender chuckled once again, her laughter filling the air.
“I didn’t really get a chance to talk to her. She and my dad were discussing business-related things. I was told to stay quiet and observe.”
“But you went to her school in Canterlot, didn’t you?” Feather Wisp asked.
A tinge of sadness appeared on Midnight Lavender's face.
“I did, for a time. But Princess Twilight had stopped teaching classes there by the time I started. She’s been so busy keeping the peace in Equestria, I doubt she would ever find time to step hoof inside that school again.”
Feather Wisp shifted her gaze toward the portrait of the Princess hanging in the corner next to her bed. Meanwhile, Midnight Lavender took a final sip from her teacup before placing it on a nearby desk. With a touch of her magic, she levitated her saddlebags and got ready to leave.
“Shall we head outside? It’s getting late.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah. Let me grab some of my things, then I’ll be- “
“You won’t need any of that stuff. Just an open mind and a desire to learn is all that is required,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp glanced at the training equipment she had pulled out.
“Why didn’t you say something earlier?”
Midnight Lavender shrugged her shoulders as she opened the door and made her way toward the back of the house.
“I thought you could use a warmup,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp's expression turned sour; her dissatisfaction evident.
“Heck of a way to do it.”
Feather Wisp trailed behind Midnight Lavender as they stepped through the back door. Pegasi, Griffins, and Hippogryphs soared in perfect formation across the skyline of Cloudsdale. The weather ponies completed their daily tasks and returned to the heart of the town, basking in the gentle glow of the settling sunlight. Feather Wisp's eyes fixated on Midnight Lavender as she descended onto the soft blue backyard.
“It’s pretty neat that Unicorns can walk around on clouds. Is that a hard spell to learn?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender set her saddlebags against a cluster of clouds that resembled decorative shrubs and turned to face Feather Wisp.
“Given that my family has been involved in Cloudsdale's affairs for generations, learning this spell has become mandatory.Personally, it wasn't too difficult for me to grasp, but some of my siblings struggled with it.”
Feather Wisp descended into the backyard, leaving delicate imprints of her hooves upon the fluffy clouds beneath her.
“All right, Feather Wisp, are you ready to get started?” Midnight Lavender asked.
Feather Wisp nodded eagerly, brimming with excitement.
“Of course! But I do have one question.”
“Yes?” Midnight Lavender asked.
“Aren’t you gonna study your magic first?”
Midnight Lavender reached into her saddlebags and retrieved a notebook and a pen. A soft purple glow enveloped the two objects.
“We’ll be doing both. You are going to learn how to use flight magic, and I am going to test one of my spells on you while you learn,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp felt a flicker of uncertainty at the mention of Midnight Lavender using magic on her.
“Um… is that safe? I’m sure you know what you’re doing, but I’ve never had a Unicorn use magic on me before.”
Midnight Lavender nodded reassuringly.
“It's perfectly safe. It's just a magic analysis spell. I use it to detect traces of magic in the environment. It's usually used for tracking purposes, but I have a different application in mind.”
“A different application?” Feather Wisp asked.
“You'll see. Now, I want you to stand in the center of the backyard. Spread your wings and give your best attempt at flying toward the fence.”
Feather Wisp nodded and made her way to the center of the backyard. With a gentle motion, she unfurled her petite wings, causing a few feathers to gracefully descend toward the clouds below. Inhaling deeply, she began to flap her wings with rapid intensity. Slowly, her legs lifted off the ground, propelling her forward in a floating motion. She almost reached the opposite side of the yard, but her wings succumbed to fatigue before she could complete the journey. With a thud, she landed on her stomach.
“Ow! Sorry, my wings are still sore from the mock exam,” Feather Wisp said.
Observing the radiant purple glow emanating from Midnight Lavender's horn, Feather Wisp noticed a delicate veil of magic covering her companion's eyes, accompanied by a tranquil chiming sound. As Midnight Lavender broke her concentration, her horn flickered intermittently.
“Just as I suspected! You’re still relying on wing power over flight magic.”
Midnight Lavender’s tone shifted from calm to passionate. The Unicorn's statement and sudden change in demeanor left Feather Wisp feeling perplexed.
“I’ve never really tried using flight magic before. Aren’t I just supposed to flap my wings?”
Midnight Lavender promptly opened her notebook and turned to a specific page, preparing to address the matter.
“Pegasi always incorporate magic into their flight, although the amount used tends to be minimal. Because your tribe doesn’t typically channel magic in the conventional sense, like Unicorns, Pegasi tend to strengthen their overall wing power over their understanding of magic. While this does result in faster and more powerful flight, it’s only part of the solution to increasing your overall capabilities.”
Feather Wisp blinked, her expression revealing a momentary loss of thought. Midnight Lavender closed her notebook and returned it to her saddlebags. The pale-colored Pegasus rose from the ground, stretching her legs and wings. As she stretched, there was a slight popping sound from one of her hind legs.
“Why wasn’t this mentioned more in school?” Feather Wisp asked.
“Well, most Pegasi don’t dream of being one of the best flyers in Equestria. I’m sure your teachers only covered the fundamentals. I imagine some of the top flyers know a lot about this technique, but such knowledge is not freely shared in a competitive environment.”
Feather Wisp pondered Midnight Lavender's words, rubbing her hoof against her chin.
“Wow… I wonder if Rainbow Dash or any of the other great Pegasi knew about it.”
“I'm certain they did. Some Pegasi possess a natural inclination for it, but those cases are rare,” Midnight Lavender said.
“I bet Cloud Glider is one of those rare cases.”
Midnight Lavender tilted her head in confusion.
“Cloud Glider? I haven’t heard of her before.”
“She’s not a famous flyer…yet. She’s one of my classmates at school. She destroyed everypony’s time in the mock exam. Her brother is a Wonderbolt. Does the name Gale Glider sound familiar?” Feather Wisp asked.
After a brief moment of contemplation, Midnight Lavender nodded.
“It does sound vaguely familiar. I believe he might be one of the flyers sponsored by my father.”
Midnight Lavender walked toward the base of the stairs leading to the back porch of Feather Wisp's house.
“Don’t worry about this classmate of yours, Feather Wisp. The technique I'm about to teach you can enhance the flight abilities of any Pegasus, regardless of their wing power," Midnight Lavender said.
The Unicorn sat down on the stairs and smiled.
“Are you ready to give this technique a try?” Midnight Lavender asked.
Feather Wisp flapped her wings in preparation.
“Ready.”
“All right, this time I want you to flap your wings and close your eyes. When you sense a sensation similar to that of the wind beneath your wings, grab onto it and follow that current. It might feel like you're being blown away rather than flying, but we'll cover the other part of the technique after you've given this a try.”
Feather Wisp nodded and prepared herself. She took a deep breath and began flapping her wings. Her body lifted off the ground once again. She felt a burning sensation in her wings as they struggled to keep her airborne. The familiar melodic hum of Midnight Lavender's magic filled Feather Wisp's ears. The pale-colored Pegasus grunted as she pushed through the pain.
“Focus, Feather Wisp. When you sense that uplifting current, let it carry you,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp flapped her wings rapidly, searching for the elusive sensation that Midnight Lavender had talked about. Just as she was about to give up, she felt a sudden surge of energy lift her wings for a brief moment. Surrendering herself to the current's guidance, she floated across the yard, covering about ten paces before crashing onto the ground. Panting heavily, she settled onto the soft blue terrain. Midnight Lavender approached, carrying a bucket of water, which Feather Wisp eagerly gulped down.
“Great job, Feather Wisp. How did it feel?”
“It felt... like I was drifting away. I flew higher and longer than last time, but I had no control.”
“That's all right. I noticed a slight increase in the magic you were employing as the current carried you across the yard. When you're ready, we can proceed to the next step. We could take a break for today and resume tomorrow if you'd like- “
“-No. I’m going to learn this new technique today,” Feather Wisp interjected.
Setting the water bucket aside, Feather Wisp steadied herself, though her wings throbbed with discomfort. Despite the pain, her determination remained unwavering.
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to get hurt,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp nodded her head.
“Show me the next step.”
Midnight Lavender hesitated, observing Feather Wisp's exhausted and perspiring form. While worried about her new friend's well-being, she couldn't help but admire Feather Wisp's defiance against her current condition.
“All right, but remember, it's okay if you don't grasp it today. Just keep that in mind,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp turned toward Midnight Lavender, wearing a determined smile. While Midnight Lavender couldn't discern the thoughts running through Feather Wisp’s mind, she could see that the pale-colored Pegasus wasn't ready to give up just yet.
“Now, when you take to the air and feel yourself being carried away, you'll sense another force pushing against the back of your wings. That force is the ambient magic in the air. Instead of solely relying on wing power to propel yourself forward, harness that subtle force. Initially, you'll need to lift yourself up with your wings, but then use them primarily for steering and changing direction. This ambient magic isn’t something you can see; you'll just have to feel for it.”
Feather Wisp took a deep breath.
“Faint force against the back of my wings, got it,” Feather Wisp said.
As the afternoon sun's yellow rays transformed into shades of orange, a portion of the sky darkened with the arrival of twilight. Midnight Lavender couldn’t help but worry. If that pony keeps going, I’m afraid she’ll end up hurting herself badly, the Unicorn thought.
Feather Wisp began flapping her wings, and Midnight Lavender could see the pain etched on her face. Despite the discomfort, the pale-colored Pegasus lifted off the ground and drifted across the yard. However, as Feather Wisp's wings grew weaker, panic started to creep in, and her control slipped away once more.
“You’ve got this! Search for that push, Feather Wisp,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp grunted as her wings began to falter. Her body descended, drifting backward toward a cloud hedgerow. Despite her efforts to find the elusive push against her wings, she could only sense the familiar sensation from before. Tempted to surrender to its control, Feather Wisp suddenly felt a faint yet distinct push on the back of her wings. She focused intently on the gentle stream of magic behind her. Her body surged forward and maintained a steady altitude of four leg lengths above the ground. Feather Wisp burst into laughter, overwhelmed with joy as she effortlessly soared across the yard toward the fence. The pale-colored Pegasus adjusted her flight angle, ascending another four leg lengths into the air.
Flying just above the roof of her house, Feather Wisp reveled in the breathtaking view of her entire neighborhood. She maintained a steady pace and a straight trajectory, a first in her flying endeavors. The burning sensation in her wings had vanished, replaced by the refreshing embrace of the cool evening breeze. A faint trail of white and orange light followed behind her as she soared. With a graceful tilt of her body, she executed a yaw toward her backyard, eliciting cheers of encouragement from Midnight Lavender.
“You did it, Feather Wisp! There's an abundance of magic coming from your wings now.”
As the sound of a bag dropping to the wooden deck reached her ears, Midnight Lavender turned to see Feather Wisp's mother, Aurora Wisp. A purse filled with makeup and various household items lay discarded on the ground. Aurora Wisp's jaw had dropped, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. Feather Wisp descended and stumbled upon landing in the backyard. She rolled onto her stomach for a few seconds before springing back up. In a gleeful frenzy, she hopped in circles, repeatedly uttering the same phrase.
“I did it, I did it, I did it!”
Feather Wisp's mother galloped across the backyard, closing the distance between them. Feather Wisp noticed her approach and came to a halt.
"Mom! Did you see me fly—" Feather Wisp began, but her words were cut short as her mother enveloped her in a tight hug.
“Yes, Fisp, I saw you fly. I am so proud of you! I can't wait to tell your father about this.”
Feather Wisp returned the embrace, hugging her mother tightly. As they held each other, Feather Wisp's gaze shifted toward Midnight Lavender, who wore a serene smile. Releasing her mother, Feather Wisp walked up to Midnight Lavender and embraced her in a warm hug.
“Thank you, Midnight,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender, initially unsure of how to respond, patted Feather Wisp on the back. “Of course… uh, no problem.”
Feather Wisp let go of Midnight Lavender and picked up the dropped purse, giving it back to her mother as she approached them.
“I believe this calls for somepony’s favorite dessert,” Aurora Wisp said.
Feather Wisp's eyes lit up with even more excitement.
“Oh my gosh. Best day ever!” Feather Wisp said.
With a gesture, Feather Wisp motioned for Midnight Lavender to follow her into the house. Aurora Wisp walked closely behind her daughter, holding the door open for the Unicorn. Midnight Lavender levitated her saddlebags to herself. She cast a lingering gaze at the sky as its vibrant hues gradually faded into darkness. After a brief pause, she shifted her attention toward the back door, joining Feather Wisp and Aurora Wisp as they ventured inside the house.

Midnight Lavender clicked her horseshoes onto her hooves, feeling a slight pang in her stomach from indulging in the generous portions of cake. Initially cautious about the unfamiliar dessert, she couldn't resist and ended up savoring two slices, acknowledging that Feather Wisp's mother surpassed even the skilled chefs at her family's mansion.
“Thank you so so much for teaching me how to use flight magic, Midnight!” Feather Wisp said, bouncing up and down with uncontainable excitement.
Midnight Lavender chuckled, delighted by the pale-colored pony's enthusiasm.
“You’re welcome, Feather Wisp. But remember, we aren’t done yet. We are going to train every day until you feel comfortable using flight magic. You need to be exceptionally prepared for your upcoming exam.”
Feather Wisp nodded fervently.
“Of course! I can’t wait for tomorrow. Be careful heading back to the hotel, okay?”
Midnight Lavender nodded in acknowledgment.
Feather Wisp's mother emerged from the kitchen; her curly pink mane elegantly arranged to one side. Making her way toward the two mares, she addressed her daughter.
“Fisp, could you clean up the dishes for me? I need to start a load of laundry in the washer.”
Feather Wisp turned toward her mother, flashing a warm smile.
“Sure thing! Have a good night, Midnight. See you tomorrow.”
Feather Wisp bid farewell to Midnight Lavender with a cheerful wave as she trotted into the kitchen. The unicorn reciprocated the gesture, waving back at her.
“Goodnight, Feather Wisp,” Midnight Lavender said.
As the pale-colored Pegasus entered the kitchen, a cacophony of clanging pots and pans filled the air.
Midnight Lavender turned around and reached for the front door. However, before she could grab the doorknob, a voice halted her movement.
“Thank you. I don't know what you showed her or how you helped her, but we are incredibly grateful to you. If there's anything we can do to repay you for your kindness, please don't hesitate to ask,” Aurora Wisp said.
Aurora Wisp approached Midnight Lavender, her eyes reflecting appreciation. The Unicorn respectfully lowered her head and offered a warm smile.
“I would like to spend more time with your daughter, Mrs. Wisp, if that would be all right.”
Aurora Wisp's face lit up with a smile.
“Of course. You're welcome to come over whenever you'd like.”
“Good night, Mrs. Wisp,” Midnight Lavender said.
Aurora Wisp returned a bow to the Unicorn.
“Good night, Midnight Lavender.”
Midnight Lavender opened the front door and stepped out of the Wisp’s residence onto the suburban streets of Cloudsdale. She turned, facing the expanse of sidewalk that stretched before her. The glow of streetlights cast patches of yellow circles upon the marble pathway. Taking a moment to admire the night sky, Midnight Lavender observed the stars as they twinkled and communicated with each other, their gentle flickers resembling a rhythmic conversation. The moonlight bathed the floating city in a soft, pale blanket, while a cool breeze delicately tousled the Unicorn's mane. As she strolled along the sidewalk toward the city center, a profound realization dawned upon her. Today marked a newfound sense of liberation. It was the most freedom she had felt in a long time.
Her hooves bounced against each patch of cloud as she hopped from one part of the obstacle course to another. Once she reached the end of the obstacle course, the pale-colored Pegasus took off into the sky and returned to the starting point for another attempt. A few weeks had passed since Midnight Lavender had taught Feather Wisp how to use flight magic. The pale-colored pony’s speed and control had improved. She could now travel through the air at a similar pace to some of the best flyers in her school. The studious Unicorn below jotted information into her notebook. Her radiant eyes scanned the sky as they tracked the magical trail that followed Feather Wisp. As the pale-colored Pegasus developed her flight skills, the trail of orange and white magic behind her became more opaque.
“Almost there. I can do this,” Feather Wisp said.
The pale-colored Pegasus focused on the triad of cloud hoops in front of her. Each hoop was put into formation as close to the exam’s official layout as possible. If I can nail this, I’ll pass the exam for sure, Feather Wisp thought. She passed through the first hoop with ease. Approaching the second hoop, she adjusted her speed, preparing for a more intricate maneuver. As she passed through the hoop, a trail of magical energy connected her to its surface. Swiftly tilting her body upward, she executed a seamless loop around the top portion, propelled like a slingshot. Once again, she glided through the second hoop before progressing to the final obstacle.
The third hoop presented a different configuration, angled horizontally and pointing downward toward the backyard. Feather Wisp angled her body upwards before diving through the hoop toward the ground below. Her wings strained against the gravitational pull, causing fatigue to set in. Sensing the need for adjustment, she reversed the magical force acting upon her wings, slowing her descent. Landing on the soft, billowy ground, she stumbled momentarily, struggling to regain her balance.
Midnight Lavender approached Feather Wisp with a satisfied smile. The purple magical aura enveloping her eyes flickered and dissipated as she closed the notepad she had been levitating, gently placing it on the ground beside her.
“Good job, Feather Wisp. Your control over your speed is improving, but your landings still need some refinement,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp grabbed a nearby bucket of water, drinking half of it in only a few gulps. Setting the bucket down, she wiped her mouth and let out a small burp.
“Excuse me! Ugh, I know. I keep misjudging the speed during my dives. Any tips to help with that?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender tapped her hoof thoughtfully against her chin, observing the distance between the third hoop and the ground.
“Perhaps try flattening your body slightly more during the descent. While your wings can't do all the work, the rest of you can still contribute.”
Feather Wisp extended her wings and stretched her legs.
“I’ll give it a shot once I’ve rested a bit.”
Midnight Lavender noticed that Feather Wisp’s stern expression had persisted throughout their training session.
“Are you still thinking about Cloud Glider?” Midnight Lavender asked.
Feather Wisp nodded her head.
“Yeah… I know you said I should just focus on passing the exam, but I really do want to beat her time in the race. I think that will finally put a stop to her relentless bullying.”
Midnight Lavender let out a sigh, her head shaking in subtle disapproval.
“Feather Wisp, you don't need any form of validation from her. You've shown remarkable progress in these past few weeks.”
Undeterred, Feather Wisp walked past Midnight Lavender, making her way toward the center of the backyard.
“It isn’t about validation. It’s about proving a point to her,” Feather Wisp said.
Curiosity flickered in Midnight Lavender's eyes as she tilted her head.
“A point?”
Feather Wisp paused, gathering her thoughts before responding. “She’s always called me weak and useless because of my condition. If I simply pass, then she’ll continue to say I’m weaker than she is. I want to beat her at what she’s good at. I think that’s the only way to make her stop. Who knows, maybe she’ll change her rude ways after that.”
“Do you think her opinion of you will truly matter after you graduate?” Midnight Lavender asked.
“The way I see it, if she recognizes me as capable, then all the other ponies and creatures in my class will too.”
Midnight Lavender nodded in comprehension.
“I see. You want everypony’s opinion to change, not just hers.”
“Exactly,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender ransacked her mind, searching for any knowledge that could offer Feather Wisp an advantage over Cloud Glider. However, she realized that she had already imparted all her wisdom on flight magic to Feather Wisp. Cloud Glider seemed to possess innate talent in every aspect. Hailing from a renowned lineage with superior flight genetics and an insatiable thirst for victory, Cloud Glider appeared to be a formidable rival for the pale-colored Pegasus.
“I've taught you everything I know, Feather Wisp. If I were in your hooves, I would concentrate on giving my best to pass the exam. Once you've accomplished that, you can dedicate as much time as you need to master more advanced flight skills. Filly steps, remember?”
Feather Wisp let out a sigh, her frustration evident.
“Yeah, I know, filly steps,” Feather Wisp said.
Their conversation was interrupted by a voice calling out to them. Both mares turned their attention toward the backyard porch, where Feather Wisp's mother stood, accompanied by a distinguished older stallion with a beard. An unsettling feeling crept over Midnight Lavender as suspicion grew within her.
“Midnight Lavender! This well-dressed stallion said he was sent by your father,” Feather Wisp’s mother said.
A surprised expression covered Midnight Lavender’s face. The well-dressed Unicorn descended the porch stairs and approached Midnight Lavender. Without uttering a word, he levitated a letter in front of him. Midnight Lavender took the letter with her hoof, tearing it open anxiously. As her eyes scanned the contents, a profound sadness etched itself onto her features.
“My father says that the construction project in Cloudsdale is finished, and that we are going back to Canterlot… tonight.”
Feather Wisp's eyes widened in shock.
“Tonight? But my exam is in two days!”
Midnight Lavender glanced toward the butler and abruptly gave him the letter. Taking a deep breath, she turned her gaze back to Feather Wisp, her expression filled with regret.
“I’m sorry, Feather Wisp,” Midnight Lavender said as she bowed her head.
“Wait, can’t you convince him to stay a couple more days?” Feather Wisp asked. Desperation filled her voice.
Midnight Lavender shook her head, her face a mix of sympathy and helplessness.
“Trust me, I have tried convincing him to change his mind in the past. He doesn’t like last-minute changes to his schedule.”
“But how will you know if I pass or not? You've put so much effort into helping me improve my flying skills!”
Midnight Lavender raised her head and levitated her notebook with her magic. She quickly jotted down an address on a blank sheet of paper, tearing it out from the notebook before giving it to Feather Wisp.
“Here, take this. You can write to me once you pass your exam.”
Feather Wisp studied the address on the notebook paper.
“You say that like I’m guaranteed to pass it,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender offered Feather Wisp a faint smile.
“That’s because you will pass it. You’re one of the hardest-working ponies I’ve ever met. If anypony will ace the exam, it’s you.”
Feather Wisp returned a smile.
“Thank you, for everything you’ve done. I don’t know how I’ll ever pay you back for your help.”
“Just remember to keep in touch. Who knows, perhaps we'll cross paths again soon,” Midnight Lavender said, a touch of hope in her voice.
Feather Wisp nodded, trying to hold back a tear that threatened to escape.
“I’ll remember, I promise.”
The pale-colored Pegasus embraced Midnight Lavender tightly, seeking solace in their final embrace. Midnight Lavender reciprocated the hug, gently patting Feather Wisp on the back. Eventually, she released her grip and followed the butler, their steps leading them toward the backdoor of the Wisp residence. As she passed Feather Wisp's mother, Midnight Lavender bowed her head respectfully.
“Thank you for allowing me to spend time with your daughter, Mrs. Wisp. You’ve raised a very kind, hard-working pony.”
Aurora Wisp nodded, a bittersweet smile gracing her lips.
“Thank you, Midnight. Please, take care of yourself.”
Before the butler could close the door behind her, Midnight Lavender stole one last glance at her Pegasus friend. Feather Wisp stood focused, her determined expression fixed on the obstacle course above. The Unicorn's smile conveyed warmth and encouragement as the backdoor of the Wisp residence shut with a resounding thud.
***
Her hooves echoed with a rhythmic click against the polished spruce floorboards as she walked through the grand hallway. Adorned with cherished family heirlooms, ornate portraits, and elegant crests, the walls of the mansion's interior exuded a sense of historical significance. Sunlight flooded through the expansive windows, casting a warm glow on the surroundings. The diligent groundskeeper ponies could be seen outside, meticulously tending to the neatly trimmed hedgerows of the impeccably maintained landscape.
Midnight Lavender ascended the graceful wooden staircase, moving into another corridor. She stood before her father's office, steeling herself with a deep breath. The words "Orchid Lavender, CEO of Lavish Architects Inc." were stamped onto a golden plate of metal on the door. Familiar voices echoed from within the room, one clear and distinct, while the other, faint and distorted, seemed to emanate from a small speaker. Raising her right front hoof, she gently knocked on the inlaid door.
A solid object collided with force within the confines of the office, followed by approaching hoofsteps that grew nearer to the door. The inlaid door groaned open, revealing a smartly dressed blue stallion with a dark mustache and slicked-back mane standing in the doorway. His voice dripped with disdain as he prepared himself for their forthcoming conversation.
“Yes, Midnight?”
“May I enter, Father?” Midnight Lavender asked. Her voice carried a hint of trepidation.
Midnight Lavender's father offered a subtle nod, stepping aside to make way for her entry. With a mix of apprehension and determination, the Unicorn crossed the threshold into her father's office. Dominating the room's center was an imposing decorative desk, its surface strewn with a disarray of papers. Adjacent to the scattered documents, a telephone rested upon a small stand. A gentle hum emanated from a dainty lamp, casting a soft, warm glow upon the left side of the desk. The side walls were adorned with framed excerpts from renowned business magazines and books, serving as a constant source of inspiration. On the back wall, portraits of her father's ancestors commanded attention, while a modest section was dedicated to showcasing her father's master's degree from the prestigious Manehattan School of Economics and Business. The office exuded a unique chateau-inspired aesthetic, reflecting her father's refined taste.
Seated in a plush leather chair, Midnight Lavender's father sighed wearily, his ocher eyes fatigued. Running a hoof through his slicked-back mane, he adjusted the nameplate on his desk, contemplating the words he would choose.
"Let me guess... this is about returning to Cloudsdale, isn't it?"
His tone was tinged with a hint of annoyance.
“Father, please, you must understand… I have to- “
“-We don't have time for you to form friendships with random Pegasi, Midnight. I've been trying to teach you how to run the family business, and instead, you deceived me for three weeks while you frolicked with some no-name filly.”
Midnight Lavender recoiled, her eyes widening in shock at her father's harsh words.
“She is not a no-name filly. She’s my friend,” Midnight Lavender said.
“While I understand that, darling, you have more important matters to attend to. What can this filly offer you that your family cannot?”
"Somepony I can rely on, somepony who genuinely cares about me for who I am, not for my wealth or status," Midnight Lavender said.
Her father's tone softened slightly as he posed another question.
"And do you think your own family doesn't care about you? Can't you rely on us?"
Orchid Lavender sat upright in his chair. He leaned forward, resting his front legs on the desk’s surface.
“Everything I do for the family business, I do for you, your siblings, and your mother. If I didn't concern myself with it, we wouldn't have the lifestyle we enjoy, the food we eat, or the events we attend.”
Midnight Lavender's frustration grew, and she stomped her front hooves on the floor.
“Those are all things that YOU care about. What about my magic studies? Where is the support for that?”
Her father scoffed dismissively, casting doubt on the importance of her magical pursuits.
“Magic isn’t going to keep the lights on, Midnight. Equestria’s changed. If you want to succeed in this world, you need to acquire practical skills.”
“And what, magic isn’t a practical skill? Have you forgotten who the Princess of Equestria is, Father?”
Orchid Lavender rose from his chair and walked toward a nearby window. He peered through the blinds, his gaze fixed on the royal palace. The grounds were enveloped in a shimmering aura of purple and pink magic that pulsated in a rhythmic pattern.
“Things are not as they once were, Midnight. You can no longer achieve fame and wealth solely through magic,” her father said, turning to face her.
“Our family business, the one we have painstakingly built, will require our influence as the world evolves. I fear that tensions between the three tribes will only intensify, and I want to ensure the safety and security of our family,” he continued, his tone laden with concern.
Orchid Lavender's gaze shifted to a grand portrait of an older pony dressed in a resplendent suit.
"My grandfather worked tirelessly to establish our family business, and I refuse to let his legacy go to waste. The frivolities and distractions you are indulging in with this 'friend' of yours are nothing but a futile waste of time, Midnight.”
"A waste of time? How can you say that? She is the first true friend I have had in a long time," Midnight Lavender said. Her voice tinged with sadness.
Orchid Lavender returned to his desk and retrieved a small folder. With a fluid motion, he tossed the folder onto the other side of the desk. The cover of the folder bore the inscription "Ponyville Branch," with Midnight Lavender's name written beneath it. As Midnight Lavender approached the folder, a sense of apprehension crept across her face.
“What is this?”
“Your next lesson,” her father said.
“I-I don’t understand…” Midnight Lavender said, her confusion deepening.
Orchid Lavender settled back into his chair and struck a match against a rough patch on the desk. He then lit a small smoking pipe that sat on the desk's surface. He placed the small end of the pipe against his lips, before taking a few puffs and releasing transparent vapor into the air.
“You need to experience what it truly means to run an operation on your own. You're eighteen now, an adult mare. It's time for you to mature and move beyond frivolous pursuits. You'll be leaving tomorrow morning. My associates are already preparing a setup at the outskirts of Ponyville,” her father said, his voice firm.
Midnight Lavender instinctively stepped back.
“Father, don’t I have a say in this matter?”
Orchid Lavender shook his head, his gaze unwavering.
“If our family is going to thrive in this ever-changing, competitive environment, we must adapt. Soon, you will grasp a fraction of the sacrifices I've made to ensure our family's success. Now, go to your room and start packing your suitcase. You leave at six o'clock tomorrow morning."
Midnight Lavender’s tears tapped against the wooden floor of the office.
“But I… I don’t want to go to Ponyville. I want to be in Cloudsdale. I want to cheer on my friend as she passes her exam. Father, please..."
Orchid Lavender sternly pointed his hoof toward the office door.
“Go, Midnight. This conversation is over.”
Midnight Lavender obediently bowed her head to her father's command. With a heavy heart, she turned away from the desk and made her way toward the open doorframe. As she slowly closed the door behind her, her eyes were drawn to the radiant sunlight streaming through the window on the staircase. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the scenery. In the distance, a cluster of clouds floated lazily in the sky. Her gaze shifted to the landing strip at the edge of her family's property. Nestled next to their grand air yacht was a small air balloon, its weathered rope tethered to a nearby pole. Determination replaced the tears on Midnight Lavender's face as she wiped her eyes and descended the majestic wooden staircase.
***
Midnight Lavender sealed her suitcase with a zip, her gaze fixed upon its dark purple exterior. She turned her head away, directing her attention toward the window overlooking the landing strip. The groundskeeper ponies had retired for the night, and the moon's gentle glow blanketed the ground in a pale luminescence. Midnight Lavender carefully crafted a note, leaving it atop the neatly arranged sheets of her bed. She levitated her suitcase, enveloping it in a purple aura, and switched off the bedside lamp.
Silently, she navigated the long, dimly lit hallways of her family's grand mansion, avoiding detection from the security ponies who patrolled the premises. Evading a few vigilant guards, she made her way toward the landing strip. Casting a final glance at her ancestral home, she gently placed her suitcase into the basket of the small air balloon. Climbing into the basket herself, she employed her magic to ignite the flames that would fuel the balloon's ascent. After a couple of minutes, the balloon began to rise. Carefully, she released the old rope from the nearby pole, tucking it securely within the basket. The air balloon ascended into the night sky, gently drifting toward Cloudsdale.
As the stars twinkled above, Midnight Lavender felt their presence, as if they whispered among themselves about her daring venture. Yet, she no longer concerned herself with the potential consequences of her actions. Her sole desire was to witness her friend's success. Opening her suitcase, she retrieved a small black satchel concealed within a side compartment. Counting the bits she had taken from one of the safes in her family's mansion, she ensured she had enough for an extended stay at the hotel. She gazed out onto the moonlit landscape of Equestria. The many streams and lakes below reflected the vibrant stars above. Each cloud that drifted past the air balloon was another step closer to her destination. Soon, she would be by her new friend’s side once again.
***
Feather Wisp's eyes fluttered open, and she found herself gazing at the ceiling of her bedroom. Moonlight filtered through her window, casting ethereal patterns on the floor. Rubbing her eye sockets, she shifted her attention to the alarm clock beside her bed. The digital numbers displayed “2:35 a.m.” A yawn escaped her as she covered her mouth with a hoof. With a gentle motion, she pulled back the covers and planted her hooves on the wooden floor.
Opening her bedroom door, Feather Wisp moved wearily into the space that connected the living room and the kitchen. Her eyes wandered over the assortment of family photos adorning the nearby wall. Most of the pictures captured different stages of her life, with a few featuring her father. Many of these images were taken during the Cloudsdale derby when Feather Wisp was just a young filly. However, a more recent addition hung near the kitchen—a snapshot of Feather Wisp on her second day of flight, after Midnight Lavender had taught her the intricacies of flight magic. The pure excitement of her mother had compelled her to capture the moment in a picture.
Contemplating the new photograph, Feather Wisp's thoughts drifted to her father. She wondered if he had received news of her newfound ability. Being on the distant side of Equestria, she anticipated that it would take some time before she and her mother would receive a letter from him. The sound of approaching hoofsteps startled her, causing her to spin around and face the intruder. Aurora Wisp emitted a soft giggle at Feather Wisp's startled reaction. With a serene smile, she walked toward the wall adorned with cherished memories.
“Having trouble staying asleep, Fisp?”
Feather Wisp nodded, her expression mirroring her restlessness.
“Can you blame me?” Feather Wisp asked.
Aurora Wisp drew Feather Wisp into a comforting embrace.
“I know you’re nervous, but you shouldn’t worry. You’re going to do great.”
Feather Wisp smiled, finding solace in her mother's words.
“You always say that.”
“That’s because you always do,” her mother said. Her voice held a gentle reassurance.
Feather Wisp's gaze turned wistful.
“I wish Midnight Lavender could be here for my exam.”
Feather Wisp's mother tenderly ran a hoof through her daughter's mane.
“Me too, Fisp. But I know that wherever she is, she’s cheering you on. Now, go get some sleep. A fancy flyer like you needs all the energy she can get before a big test.”
Feather Wisp chuckled softly.
“Fancy flyer? I don’t know if I’d call it that. Besides, even if I try to go back to bed, I doubt I'll be able to fall asleep. I’ve got way too much on my mind.”
“Do you want to sleep in my room tonight, like you used to when you were younger?” Aurora Wisp asked.
Feather Wisp shook her head.
“I haven’t done that since I was like, eight years old.”
“You stopped when you were thirteen, Fisp.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’ll be fine, I promise,” Feather Wisp said, pulling her mother into a heartfelt hug.
“Love you, Mom.”
Aurora Wisp returned the embrace, her smile filled with warmth.
“Love you, too, Fisp.”
Feather Wisp released her mother and made her way back into her bedroom. Letting out a yawn, she covered her mouth with a hoof before closing the door behind her. Moments later, the sound of her jumping onto the bed reached her mother's ears. Within minutes, Feather Wisp's gentle snores filled the room. Aurora Wisp turned her attention to the most recent photo of Feather Wisp, noticing that the picture frame was slightly crooked. With a gentle touch, she straightened it until it aligned perfectly with the others. A surge of pride and love filled Aurora Wisp's heart as she admired the wall that chronicled her daughter's growth. A smile graced her face, knowing that soon she would have even more precious pictures to add to the collection.
Feather Wisp's front legs tapped impatiently against the kitchen table while her mother bustled about, preparing breakfast. The morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, casting a warm glow in the Wisp residence. Finally, Feather Wisp's mother placed a plate of freshly made pancakes, adorned with pieces of cereal and maple syrup, in front of the eager Pegasus. Without wasting a moment, Feather Wisp tore into the pancakes, leaving them in tattered remnants. As she devoured her breakfast, she felt a slight tug at her left wing.
“Ow!”
“Don’t eat too quickly, Fisp. You’ll get a stomachache.”
“I need to hurry,” Feather Wisp said, her voice filled with urgency.
“Why does it matter if we arrive at school early? I thought the exam was at nine?” her mother asked.
Feather Wisp set her fork down on the now-empty plate and let out a satisfied burp.
“We need to be early so that you can get a front-row seat. I don't want you to end up in a spot where you can't see me,” Feather Wisp said.
Feather Wisp’s mother chuckled warmly.
“You'll be flying through the air, Fisp. I'm sure I'll be able to see you just fine, no matter where I sit.”
Feather Wisp leaped down from her chair and dashed into her room. She swiftly returned to the kitchen, donning a pair of saddlebags on her back.
“You got everything, Mom? We gotta get going,” Feather Wisp said.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.”
Feather Wisp's mother removed her blue and yellow apron and picked up her purse. Making her way toward the front door, she watched as Feather Wisp fastened her horseshoes. With a swift motion, Feather Wisp turned the doorknob and flung the door open. Stepping outside, she stretched her short wings and assumed a stable position, ready for takeoff. Her mother followed suit, spreading her own wings, and together they ascended into the sky, heading toward the heart of Cloudsdale. During their flight, Feather Wisp's mother couldn't help but observe the trail of vibrant orange and white magic that emanated from her daughter. The sight filled her with joy, and a smile graced her face as they soared through the skies.

From the fourteenth-floor window, Midnight Lavender gazed out toward the bustling center of Cloudsdale. The streets below were a vibrant tapestry of colors, a blur of diverse creatures moving like brushstrokes on a canvas, creating a scene reminiscent of a pastel-painted stream. Her attention focused on the distant school building, where Pegasi, Hippogryphs, and Griffins flocked from various corners of the city, converging upon the campus grounds. As Midnight Lavender's eyes swept over the scene, she instinctively turned her gaze toward the bedside alarm clock. Its glowing digits displayed the time: “8:34 a.m.” She retrieved her saddlebags and opened the door before stepping into the hallway beyond. The plain, empty corridors felt devoid of life, their monotony contrasting with the anticipation that filled her heart. She knew that today's excitement awaited her elsewhere.
***
Feather Wisp adjusted the flight suit's mask, securing it tightly. It bore a striking resemblance to the iconic design of the Wonderbolts, albeit with slight modifications to avoid copyright issues. Gazing at her reflection in the mirror, Feather Wisp envisioned the genuine Wonderbolt uniform. As she spread her short wings, a wave of worry transformed into bubbling excitement. She longed to showcase the progress she and Midnight Lavender had made, especially to Cloud Glider. With a confident smile and a nod of affirmation, Feather Wisp prepared to embark.
The pale-colored Pegasus trotted down the hallway leading to the school's flight field, drawing a few curious glances from fellow students. However, most were preoccupied with their own concerns, barely sparing her a second glance. Approaching the exit of the hallway, Feather Wisp's gaze fell upon a familiar, yellow-colored Pegasus. Cloud Glider stood at the hallway’s threshold;her attention fixed on a group of Pegasi seated in a distant section of the bleachers. Among them were two elegantly dressed Pegasi, accompanied by a younger male Pegasus whom Feather Wisp recognized as Gale Glider.
As Feather Wisp neared Cloud Glider, the yellow Pegasus turned her head, her expression twisting into a smug grin at the sight of Feather Wisp's approach.
“Well, if it isn’t Shorty Wings. I hope you're planning to put on quite a show. We could all use some entertainment,” Cloud Glider said.
Feather Wisp remained composed, no longer affected by the abrasive mare’s insults.
“I think you’ll be quite surprised,” Feather Wisp said.
Cloud Glider wore a puzzled expression as she processed Feather Wisp's statement. Without uttering another word, the pale-colored Pegasus strode past Cloud Glider. In response, Cloud Glider couldn't help but scoff at Feather Wisp's seemingly indifferent behavior.
“Whatever…” she muttered under her breath.
The sound of a whistle pierced the air, signaling the beginning of the prep period for all the students. Amidst the distant fanfare of bombastic trumpets, the cheers of the spectators drowned out the music. One by one, the students from Feather Wisp's graduating class made their way to the center of the flight field. Each student was given a sheet of paper, bearing a number assigned to them. Feather Wisp's eyes scanned the rows of bleachers, searching for her mother's familiar presence. A teacher approached Feather Wisp and gave her a sheet of paper. To her surprise, the number she received this time was four, instead of fifteen.
“Same as Cloud Glider's number from the mock exam... I wonder if they switched us around,” Feather Wisp mused.
As she affixed the number to her flank, she cast a final glance at the spectators in the bleachers. Among them, her eyes landed on her mother, Aurora Wisp, seated at the edge of the first row. Aurora Wisp engaged in conversation with a Pegasi couple beside her. Feather Wisp's face brightened with a smile at the sight of her mother. Just then, a second whistle pierced the air, emanating from a stage at the center of the flight field. All the students turned to face the Head Instructor and the school's principal. The principal approached the microphone atop a podium and tapped it with her hoof, causing a brief screech to escape the speakers.
“Good morning, everypony. Today is an important day for our aspiring flyers of Cloudsdale. After today, many of you will embark on the next chapter of your lives, taking a step forward in pursuit of your dreams. I want to express my pride in each and every one of you for your unwavering determination and hard work. May all of you give your absolute best during the exam. I will now pass the microphone to the Head Instructor.”
The Head Instructor approached the podium, clearing her throat before addressing the students.
“All right, everypony. The rules for today's exam are similar to those of the mock exam you took a month ago. Focus on completing the exam to the best of your abilities while navigating the obstacle course. However, there is an added opportunity for extra credit. If your completion time ranks among the top three in your student body, you will receive additional credit toward your final grade.”
Tapping her hoof against the podium and adjusting her reading glasses, the Head Instructor continued, “Please note that this extra credit is entirely optional and is not necessary for achieving a perfect score on the exam. The first group will be called in a few minutes. Attend to any urgent matters before the third whistle is blown. Thank you, and good luck.”
Stepping down from the podium, the Head Instructor joined a group of other instructors at the back of the stage. Feather Wisp took a deep breath, realizing the moment had arrived. This is it , she thought, show them how far you've come .
The sound of the third whistle echoed through the air. Feather Wisp tapped her front hooves against the ground and trotted toward the starting line. As she lined up with the other students, she felt a jolt against her side. Turning to face the source of the disturbance, Feather Wisp's heart sank as she locked eyes with Cloud Glider.
“If it isn’t my lucky day. I get to prove how great I am, and how useless Pegasi like you are,” Cloud Glider sneered.
Feather Wisp's gaze darted to Cloud Glider's number sheet, revealing the number “6.” It seemed that fate had placed them both among the first group of students to participate in the exam. Butterflies fluttered in Feather Wisp's stomach, but amidst the nerves, a glimmer of determination emerged. She now had the chance not only to surpass Cloud Glider's time but to outshine her in the race as well.
“Keep your eyes up front, Shorty Wings. You’re about to witness an up-and-coming Wonderbolt in action,” Cloud Glider said.
The students positioned themselves, awaiting the final whistle. An assistant instructor concluded their discussion with the Head Instructor and turned toward the row of eight students. Placing the whistle between his lips, the Assistant Instructor took a deep breath and blew with force. The students burst forward from the starting line. Cloud Glider surged ahead, swiftly maneuvering through the initial set of obstacles.
Feather Wisp engaged in a fierce competition for second place with another Pegasus from her class. The rival Pegasus deftly weaved and dodged through the obstacles, aiming to catch up to Cloud Glider. Yet, Feather Wisp remained hot on their trail. The pale-colored Pegasus concentrated her magic into her wings, flapping them only when necessary to change course or adjust her speed. She felt the flow of magic pulsating through her wings, propelling her forward as it pushed against the surrounding air. As the two Pegasi approached the first set of cloud hoops, Feather Wisp recalled her training sessions with her Unicorn friend.
Midnight Lavender had instilled in Feather Wisp the idea that magic interconnected all things in Equestria. As she and the other Pegasus neared the third set of hoops, Feather Wisp focused on harnessing her magic as a tether. She looped around the last hoop in the set, propelling herself forward with increased velocity. Swiftly, she overtook the other Pegasus and soared into the fourth set of hoops, repeating the technique. As her speed increased, Feather Wisp concentrated on maintaining her flight trajectory to avoid any loss of balance.
In the distance, Feather Wisp spotted Cloud Glider, a trailing stream of blue and yellow light followed behind her. As Feather Wisp approached, Cloud Glider turned her head, her face transforming from shock to anger. The yellow-colored Pegasus accelerated as determination etched across her features. The two Pegasi closed in on the final set of obstacles, a series of strategically placed cloud barriers designed to test their sharp turns and evasion skills. Cloud Glider effortlessly zigzagged through the course, while Feather Wisp kept a close distance. Employing the same technique as before, Feather Wisp used her magic as a tether, swinging around each barrier. With each obstacle surmounted, her speed intensified.
Feather Wisp trailed closely behind Cloud Glider, causing the yellow Pegasus to grow increasingly panicked. As Feather Wisp began to surge ahead, Cloud Glider's frustration erupted.
“Out of my way, Shorty Wings!”
Cloud Glider collided with Feather Wisp, causing the pale-colored Pegasus to crash into a nearby cloud barrier. Breaking through the barrier, Feather Wisp landed on a stray cloud below the obstacle course. With a smug grin, Cloud Glider saluted Feather Wisp and accelerated toward the end of the course. The other students in Feather Wisp's group swiftly maneuvered through the cloud barriers, leaving her behind. Doubt crept into Feather Wisp's mind as she wondered if she could catch up to Cloud Glider again. Panic began to grip her. The pursuit of a perfect score no longer mattered; she wanted to show Cloud Glider that she wasn’t useless.
Feather Wisp turned her head toward the edge of the bleachers, where her mother wore a worried expression, shouting words of encouragement. Beside her mother sat a familiar black Unicorn, signaling for Feather Wisp to catch up with the others. The Unicorn cheered loudly, rooting for her friend's success. Feather Wisp shook off her doubts and assumed a determined stance. She propelled herself from the cloud she stood upon and rejoined the obstacle course.
The pale-colored Pegasus flew through the course with lightning speed. With unwavering focus, she utilized the techniques she had learned to their fullest extent. One by one, she overtook her fellow students. Exiting the last set of obstacles, she entered the final stretch of the race—a long lane flanked by two rows of clouds leading to the finish line. Cloud Glider's silhouette came into view once again. The yellow Pegasus approached the finish line with remarkable speed. Feather Wisp exerted all her strength, but her speed alone was not enough to close the gap.
In that critical moment, the memories of her early training sessions with Midnight Lavender flooded her mind. Feather Wisp took a deep breath, centering herself and focusing on the magic permeating the air. Amidst the ambient magic, she sensed a significant concentration just ahead. The air grew lighter as she entered a faint trail of blue and yellow magic. As she drew closer to Cloud Glider, the stream of magic intensified, becoming more opaque.
As the pale-colored Pegasus approached Cloud Glider, she sensed the air constricting around her body. The finish line loomed just moments away. Feather Wisp felt the surrounding magic exerting pressure on her wings, and as Cloud Glider's magical trail grazed her, she swiftly employed her previous technique of intertwining her own magic with that of Cloud Glider. In a fraction of a second, Feather Wisp zipped past Cloud Glider, leaving both ponies on the other side of the finish line before they even realized it. The compressed air that had enveloped Feather Wisp dissipated as she decelerated.
The pale-colored Pegasus landed on the cloud runway below, sliding to a stop. She sat down on the soft foundation to rest, her breath rapid and heavy from exertion. As the dizziness from the adrenaline subsided, the cheers of the parents and students below grew clearer. Her vision gradually sharpened as she focused on the finish line. Cloud Glider stood near the checkered strip on the cloud runway, huffing and attempting to catch her breath. Her gaze, fixed upon Feather Wisp, held an expression of disbelief the pale-colored Pegasus had never seen before.
The Assistant Instructor from the beginning of the race approached Feather Wisp and reached out a hoof. Feather Wisp grasped it, allowing herself to be pulled up onto her hooves. The Assistant Instructor smiled at her and nodded approvingly.
“Great job, Ms. Wisp,” he said.
The Assistant Instructor then made his way to the table next to the finish line, checking off the names of each student who had completed the exam. Once all the students in the first group had finished, he instructed them to return to the flight field below. As Feather Wisp spread her short wings to descend, she couldn't help but notice that Cloud Glider continued to stare at her.
“You cheated…” Cloud Glider said, her voice laced with frustration.
“Cheated?” Feather Wisp asked.
Cloud Glider stomped closer, scrutinizing the pale-colored Pegasus from head to hoof, searching for any evidence to support her theory.
“There’s no way you beat me. You, of all ponies… How? How did you improve so much in only a month? Tell me!” Cloud Glider demanded.
A serene smile graced Feather Wisp's face.
“Somepony taught me that there’s more than one way to solve a problem.”
Feather Wisp's words only served to further enrage Cloud Glider. Before the situation could escalate, Cloud Glider's brother, Gale Glider, intervened. Landing beside his sister, he gently placed a hoof against her chest.
“Cloud Glider, leave her alone. Let’s head back down to the flight field. I need to talk to you for a minute,” Gale Glider said.
Cloud Glider huffed at Feather Wisp.
“I’ll find out how you cheated, Shorty Wings. It may not be today, or tomorrow, but I will figure it out.”
With a firm tug on Cloud Glider's left wing, Gale Glider persuaded his sister to leave.
“Cloud Glider, let’s go!” he insisted, leading her away from Feather Wisp.
The two siblings descended from the obstacle course, making their way back to the school's flight field. The Assistant Instructor kindly directed Feather Wisp away from the course as the next group of students prepared for their exam.

Once all the students in Feather Wisp's graduation class had completed the exam, the Head Instructor returned to the stage. Tapping the microphone on the podium, she cleared her throat to address the young flyers.
“Congratulations on completing your final exam, young flyers," the Head Instructor began. "The exam staff have tallied your scores, and they will now be presented to you on this board.”
Pointing to a large whiteboard positioned next to the stage, she signaled one of the assistant instructors to remove the blue tarp covering it. As the tarp was pulled away, the students could see the names, times, and points of each student meticulously written in black marker on the board's surface. Feather Wisp's heart raced as she scanned the entire scoreboard, searching for her name. However, her name was nowhere to be found, and a sinking feeling began to take hold.
“The top three performers of the exam will now be announced," the Head Instructor continued. "Take note of those who secured the top three spots. Even though most of you have passed, remember that there is always room for improvement. Flying is a crucial skill in the workforce for any winged creature, whether you aspire to greatness or not. Strive to continually enhance your abilities and consider the methods employed by these top three students when reflecting on your own performance.”
An additional whiteboard, bearing the names of the top three flyers, was positioned in front of the main scoreboard. Alongside their names, completion times, and scores, Feather Wisp's eyes eagerly read the results. She had achieved a score of 103, completing the exam only half a second faster than Cloud Glider. Not only had she surpassed Cloud Glider's performance, but she had outshined her entire graduation class.

Feather Wisp clasped the framed award in her hooves, her eyes tracing the numerous signatures etched onto its surface. A smile adorned her face as she admired the accolade.
“Your performance was absolutely amazing, Feather Wisp. I had no idea you had learned another technique,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp set the framed award on the edge of the kitchen table and took a big bite of the cereal cake in front of her. She then proceeded to speak with her mouth full.
“Well, actually, I kinda learned it during the race with Cloud Glider.”
Midnight Lavender couldn't help but smile at Feather Wisp's less-than-perfect manners. She chuckled and playfully commented, “If this were my family, you'd be sent to your room without dessert for the rest of the week.”
Feather Wisp let out a hearty belch.
“No dessert for the rest of the week? That sounds terrible!”
Midnight Lavender shook her head, amused by Feather Wisp's reaction. Just then, Feather Wisp's mother approached them, enveloping her daughter in a warm and loving hug.
“We are so proud of you, Fisp!” her mother said.
Feather Wisp blushed, slightly embarrassed by the display of affection.
“C’mon, Mom. Not in front of Midnight.”
Midnight Lavender chuckled, joining in the lighthearted moment.
“Did you see the look on Cloud Glider’s face, Feather Wisp? She must have been seething with anger after losing that race.”
Feather Wisp stared at the large bite she had taken from her slice of cereal cake, her expression shifting to one of empathy.
“Yeah, I did. It looked like it was the worst thing she had ever experienced.”
“Hey, don’t start feeling sorry for her now. She needed a slice of humble pie, just as we deserve a slice of this delightful cake you've made, Mrs. Wisp,” Midnight Lavender said.
Aurora Wisp waved a hoof modestly in response to Midnight Lavender's compliment.
“You’re too kind, Midnight Lavender. I’m not that great at baking. You need to go with us some time to visit my sister. She’s a way better cook than me.”
“I’d love to,” Midnight Lavender said.
Feather Wisp continued to gaze at her own slice of cake, lost in thought. Her concentration was broken when her mother affectionately patted her on the back.
“I know your father will be so happy when he hears the news, Fisp,” her mother said.
Feather Wisp savored another bite of her cake before turning to face Midnight Lavender.
“Speaking of which, what are you gonna do about your dad?” Feather Wisp asked.
Midnight Lavender tapped her hoof against her chin, contemplating the question.
“Well, I imagine he's not too thrilled that I ‘borrowed’ the family's air balloon and some money from one of his safes. Knowing him, he'll be more concerned about the loss of assets rather than the fact that I left the mansion to come see you. But I've been thinking about it, and I believe I know how I can regain his favor.”
Midnight Lavender took a bite of her cake, letting out a contented "Mm" as she relished the dessert.
“The day before your exam, my father assigned me the task of learning the ins and outs of the family business. He's opening a branch office in Ponyville and wants me to help manage it. I think that will align with his expectations for my future, and I can use the money I earn to repay what I... borrowed.”
Feather Wisp's face lit up with excitement.
“That sounds awesome! I’ve never been to Ponyville before. I’d love to visit the Princess’ old castle someday,” Feather Wisp said.
“I've never been to Ponyville either. The only issue is, I'm not sure when I'll have the opportunity to spend time with you again, Feather Wisp. I'll likely have my hooves full for a while. I don't even know if I'll be able to dedicate as much time to studying magic as I used to,” Midnight Lavender said, a hint of sadness in her voice.
The two ponies grew somber at the thought of being apart for an extended period. Suddenly, a spark of inspiration ignited in Feather Wisp's eyes. She slammed her hooves onto the kitchen table, causing her mother to jump in surprise.
“I just had the best idea ever! What if I helped you run your father's branch in Ponyville?” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm.
Feather Wisp turned to her mother.
“I'm going to need a job now that I've finished school, right?” Feather Wisp asked.
Feather Wisp's mother placed a couple of dishes into the sink, her expression reflecting a mix of concern and love. She carefully chose her words.
“That is true. But I would hate for you to be so far away from home, Fisp. I still want to be able to see my little filly regularly.”
“I know, Mom. But now that I can fly fast, the distance between Ponyville and Cloudsdale wouldn't be that much of a journey. And if, for some reason, I couldn't fly, Midnight could always teleport me back home,” Feather Wisp suggested.
Midnight Lavender waved her hooves in a hesitant manner.
“Hold on now, I'm not quite skilled enough with my magic to teleport yet.”
Feather Wisp's eyes gleamed with confidence.
“But you will be,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender pondered the idea, considering the implications.
“I would have to discuss it with my father and see how he feels about hiring a new employee so early. However, having a talented Pegasus on the team would greatly assist us with girder and roof work, not to mention we could use a reliable messenger pony.”
Feather Wisp turned once again to face her mother, determination shining in her eyes.
“C’mon, Mom. I’ve always wanted to visit the place where Princess Twilight used to live before her coronation. I promise, I'll make frequent visits to Cloudsdale, at least three times a week, maybe even four,” she pleaded, her excitement palpable.
Feather Wisp's mother chuckled warmly at her daughter's enthusiasm.
“We’ll talk about it in the morning, Fisp. For now, let’s just take one step at a time, okay?”
Feather Wisp nodded, understanding the need for patience.
“One step at a time, got it. Oh, and Midnight?”
“Yes, Feather Wisp?” Midnight Lavender responded, curious about what Feather Wisp had to say.
“Thank you. I couldn’t have passed my exam without you.”
Midnight Lavender blushed at the praise, trying to downplay her contribution. With a dismissive wave of her hoof, she responded, “Oh, don't mention it. Besides, I learned some valuable things about Pegasi flight magic along the way.”
Feather Wisp beamed with gratitude, appreciating Midnight Lavender's humility.
“That, and you gained two new friends in the process,” Feather Wisp said.
Midnight Lavender's gaze shifted to both Feather Wisp and Aurora Wisp, a warm and content smile spreading across her face.

Feather Wisp lay on her bed, her gaze fixed on the ceiling, her mind filled with thoughts of the future. She leaned over, observing Midnight Lavender peacefully asleep in her comfortable bedroll. Moonlight streamed through the window, casting a gentle glow upon Feather Wisp's room. The light danced upon the strings of the two guitars resting on their stands. Feather Wisp's attention then turned to the two posters adorning the corner of her room.
A smile graced her lips as she read the words at the bottom of the first poster. Today, she had soared through the skies with potential that could rival that of a Wonderbolt cadet. She knew that if she stayed on this path, she would eventually achieve the goal she had set for herself long ago. Her gaze then shifted to the printed portrait of the Princess. The land of Equestria had changed since the early days of Princess Twilight's reign. Challenges had become more complex, but Feather Wisp remained resolute in her determination to pursue her dreams.
As she closed her eyes and succumbed to sleep, a content smile adorned her face. Feather Wisp envisioned the possibilities that awaited her in the future. The fragile spark that had flickered within her for so long had grown into a radiant flame, illuminating the path forward in her life. And the weight that had pulled her down so many times in the past, had finally been lifted.
Two Years Later
Feather Wisp let out a groan as she reluctantly opened her eyes, greeted by the warm rays of the morning sun spilling onto her bed. With a shake of her head, she rolled over, seeking the solace of the darker side of her room. Just as she was about to drift back to sleep, her alarm clock shattered the silence with a sharp buzz. Startled, Feather Wisp jolted awake and fumbled to silence the alarm, but her clumsy attempt resulted in a tumble to the floor. Her blanket, torn from the bed, draped over her as she lay there, rubbing her eyes and battling the remnants of sleep. Finally, she managed to peel the blanket away and glanced at the alarm clock, which displayed the time as “7:45 a.m.” Letting out a tired yawn, she hit the snooze button, carefully placed the blanket back on the bed, and made her way to the mirror above her dresser. A cringe crossed her face as she took in the sight of her messy mane.
Determined to tame her unruly locks, Feather Wisp retrieved a brush from her dresser and rhythmically combed it through her disheveled mane, humming a punk rock tune to herself. Once satisfied with her efforts, she patted down her coat and brushed her tail, then placed the brush back on the dresser. As she surveyed her reflection, her gaze fell upon a tape measure. She elicited a smile before she stowed it away in a nearby drawer. After attending to her morning oral hygiene, Feather Wisp ventured out of her bedroom and trotted into the quiet living room, where the only source of light came from the kitchen lamp. Stretching her short wings, she opened the fridge to select her breakfast for the day.
With her breakfast prepared, the pale-colored Pegasus settled at the kitchen table, her gaze drifting toward Midnight Lavender's bedroom door. It seemed her friend had already left early that morning. Finishing her meal, Feather Wisp loaded the dishes into the dishwasher and made her way to the front door. She secured her horseshoes and donned her saddlebags before stepping out into the calm hallway of her apartment building. Descending the staircase and passing through the lobby, she offered a friendly wave to the pony at the front desk before stepping out onto the bustling streets of Ponyville.
Feather Wisp smiled and exchanged greetings with the diverse array of ponies and creatures she encountered along the main street. Even in the early hours, the town brimmed with life. Continuing her familiar route to work, she paused by the stream to toss bread to the resident ducks, bid good morning to the elderly stallion on the park bench, and exchanged waves with the greeters outside the Ponyville spa. As she passed by the original Carousel Boutique, her attention was caught by the sight of large wooden crates stacked outside the entrance. They must have received a new shipment, Feather Wisp thought. As Feather Wisp continued her stroll down the main street, she glanced at The Scratch nightclub, one of the few establishments in Ponyville that remained closed until the evening. Her hooves carried her past the original Sugar Cube Corner. The sweets shop was a staple for Feather Wisp as they made some of the best cereal cakes outside of her mother’s recipe.
Approaching the Lavish Architect's Ponyville branch on the outskirts of town, Feather Wisp paused at the crest of a hill, her gaze drawn to the magnificent crystal castle and school building in the distance. A smile graced her lips as she admired the sight, a ritual she found herself indulging in during her daily commute.
However, her attention was abruptly diverted by a loud voice that shattered the tranquil morning ambiance. She turned her gaze toward a group of weather ponies tasked with dispersing a few stray clouds that had lingered overnight. The leader of the weather ponies barked at an unfamiliar red stallion, pointing to a partially beaten cloud. The red stallion appeared disinterested and struggled to maintain flight, much to the frustration of the lead Pegasus. Annoyed, the lead Pegasus reprimanded the others and ordered them back to work, leaving the red stallion to his own devices. With a sigh, the red stallion looked down at his hooves, struggling to stay airborne as he kicked and stomped at the stubborn cloud before him.
Feather Wisp's smile widened, and she gently placed her saddlebags on a dry patch of grass. Spreading her short wings, she took to the sky, eager to assist this unfamiliar face in Ponyville.
