Young Six’s Journey: Adventure in the Kanto Region
First Pokémon Battle
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe Young Six exited Professor Oak’s lab, as Sandbar adjusted his backpack and grinned. “Okay, team. First Gym Badge is in Pewter City, so let’s keep moving!”
Yona nodded, her Bulbasaur marching proudly at her side. “Yona and Bulbasaur ready for anything!”
Ocellus looked at the Pokédex, looking at her Caterpie. “Mmm… Professor Oak said that this device can tell us information about Pokémon, maybe we should know about our Pokémon?”
“Ohhh! That’s a great idea, Ocellus!” Silverstream said, her enthusiasm contagious.
“Oh, oh! Do Bulbasaur!” Yona said excitedly.
Ocellus pointed the Pokédex at Yona’s Bulbasaur, displaying an image of it.
“Bulbasaur, the seed Pokémon,
A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this POKéMON.” A male voice said outside of the device.
“Bulbasaur had strange plant since birth? Yona take care of Bulbasaur’s plant!” Yona said, patting the bulb on Bulbasaur’s back.
“Do mine next, I’m curious to know Charmolder,” Smolder said, pointing the Pokédex at her Charmander.
“Charmander, the Lizard Pokémon,
Obviously prefers hot places. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail.”
“Huh… neat,” Smolder said, crossing her arms with a smirk.
“Me next! Me next!” Silverstream exclaimed, grabbing the Pokédex and pointing it at her Squirtle.
”Squirtle, the tiny turtle Pokémon,
After birth, its back swells and hardens into a shell. Powerfully sprays foam from its mouth.”
“Ohhhh! Cool!” Silverstream squealed, hugging her Squirtle.
“Do my Growlithe next. I’m curious now,” Gallus said, petting his Growlithe as Silverstream pointed the Pokédex at it.
”Growlithe, the puppy Pokémon,
Very protective of its territory. It will bark and bite to repel intruders from its space.“
“Huh… very protective. Got it,” Gallus said, scratching Growlithe’s head.
“I wonder what it says about Ghastbar.” Sandbar said, pointing the Pokédex at his Gastly.
“Gastly, the Gas Pokémon,
Almost invisible, this gaseous POKéMON cloaks the target and puts it to sleep without notice.“
“Almost invisible huh? Sweet,” Sandbar said, nodding to his Gastly.
Finally, out of curiosity, Ocellus pointed the Pokédex at her Caterpie.
“Caterpie, the worm Pokémon,
Its short feet are tipped with suction pads that enable it to tirelessly climb slopes and walls.”
“Huh… it’s kinda what we can do, but we stick to walls.” Ocellus said with a shy smile at her Caterpie.
After the group got to know more about their new friends, they were ready to officially begin their journey. Just as the group was leaving the outskirts of Pallet Town, they noticed someone standing in the middle of the road. He looked like an experienced trainer—muscular, wearing a blue tank top, with a confident smirk. A pendant hung from his neck, glinting in the sunlight. He raised a hand in greeting.
“Hey there,” the trainer called, his voice cool but friendly. “You must be new trainers. Name’s Ace and this is my partner Eevee.
“Eevee!” Eevee said excitedly.
“An… Eevee?” Ocellus said curiously, pointing the Pokédex at the Eevee.
“Eevee, the Evolution Pokémon,
Its genetic code is irregular. It may mutate if it is exposed to radiation from element STONEs.”
“I’m a battle trainer that moved from the Orre Region, and I couldn’t help but notice you’ve got quite the group.”
The Young Six exchanged curious looks. Smolder crossed her arms and smirked. “Yeah, and what’s it to you?”
Ace chuckled, crossing his arms as well. “Relax, I’m not here to start trouble. I just think it’d be fun to test your skills. How about a friendly Pokémon battle? I’ll even let you choose who wants to challenge me.”
Silverstream clapped her hands excitedly. “A battle? That sounds like so much fun!”
Gallus stepped forward, Growlithe at his side. “I’ll take you on. Growlithe and I are ready for whatever you’ve got.”
Ace raised an eyebrow, impressed by Gallus’s confidence. “Alright, then. I’ll use my Eevee. Let’s see what you’re made of.”
Ace’s Eevee jumped off Ace’s shoulder. It barked playfully, its ears twitching.
“Eevee!” it cried, hopping into a battle stance.
Gallus smirked, pointing toward the Eevee. “Growlithe, let’s show them what we’ve got! Use Ember!”
Growlithe inhaled deeply before releasing a burst of tiny flames toward Eevee. The flames scattered across the ground, forcing Eevee to dodge skillfully.
“Eevee, use Quick Attack!” Ace commanded.
Eevee darted forward at lightning speed, slamming into Growlithe before it could react. Growlithe stumbled but quickly recovered, growling in determination.
“Don’t let it push you around, Growlithe! Use Tackle!” Gallus called.
Growlithe lunged at Eevee, its body impacting into Eevee’s body. Eevee yelped but quickly recovered.
Ace grinned. “Not bad, but let’s turn up the heat. Eevee, use Swift!”
Eevee leaped into the air, releasing a barrage of glowing stars that struck Growlithe with pinpoint accuracy. Growlithe staggered, panting heavily but still standing.
Gallus clenched his fists. “Come on, Growlithe, we can do this! Use Ember again, and aim high!”
Growlithe barked in agreement, firing another burst of flames. This time, the Ember hit its mark, scorching Eevee slightly. The small Pokémon winced but shook it off, glaring at Growlithe with determination.
“Eevee, finish this with Tackle!” Ace commanded.
Eevee charged forward, slamming into Growlithe with all its strength. Growlithe let out a soft whine before collapsing to the ground, defeated.
Gallus sighed and returned his Growlithe to its Pokéball. “You did great, buddy. We’ll get them next time.”
Ace walked over, extending a hand to Gallus. “That was a good fight. You’ve got potential, but you’ll need to train harder if you want to take on the Gyms. Eevee and I have been at this for a while, so don’t feel bad.”
Gallus shook Ace’s hand, a small smile tugging at his beak. “Thanks. We’ll get stronger, you’ll see.”
The rest of the Young Six gathered around, offering words of encouragement to Gallus and Growlithe. Ace watched them with a thoughtful expression.
“You’ve got a strong group here,” he said. “If you keep working together and training hard, you’ll go far. Maybe we’ll battle again someday.”
Ace gave a small wave before heading off down the road, his Eevee trotting happily at his side. The Young Six watched him go, their spirits bolstered by the encounter.
Sandbar placed a hoof on Gallus’s shoulder. “You did great, Gallus. And you’re right—we’ll all get stronger together.”
Gallus nodded, a determined gleam in his eye. “Yeah. Next time, Ace won’t know what hit him.”
With renewed determination, the group continued their journey, eager to reach Pewter City.
After the hard battle with their new rival Ace, the group managed to get to route 1, seeing the lush green grass and the tall trees surrounding them.
“Alright everyone! Like Ace said, we should get more stronger, and what better way then to battle some Pokémon. And maybe if we’re lucky, catch some for our team!” Gallus said to the group.
“I like the sound of that plan.” Smolder said, smirking as she looks around the area.
“Then I say we should split up and look around, see if there’s any Pokémon around.”
Everyone nodded in unison, splitting off from the group, in search for potential Pokémon. Sandbar was trotting around, taking in the scenery. He suddenly heard some rustling in a bush, deciding to check it out. He searched in the bushes, as a sudden gust of wind blew on his face, causing him to fall back on his hind legs. Sandbar looked up, seeing a small brown avian like Pokémon.
“Pidgey!” The Pokémon shouted out loud.
“What’s that Pokémon?” Sandbar said, pointing the Pokédex at the Pokémon.
“Pidgey, the tiny bird Pokémon,
A common sight in forests and woods. It flaps its wings at ground level to kick up blinding sand.”
“Huh, let’s catch it Ghastbar!” Sandbar said to Gastly.
Gastly floated in the air, circling the Pidgey. “Now Ghastbar, use Lick!”
Gastly headed towards the Pidgey, licking its face, causing the Gastly to laugh. Pidgey, however, just shook off the saliva, letting out a battle cry.
“It wasn’t affected by his lick? Well that’s fine, I got it distracted enough to catch it.” Sandbar said, grabbing a Pokéball.
Sandbar threw the Pokéball, making contact with the Pidgey, but nothing happened.
“Huh? Why didn’t it get sucked in?” Sandbar went over to his Pokéball, realizing that it was Gastly’s Pokéball. “Oh… that’s why.”
The Pidgey flew off in the air, making its escape. Gastly went back to Sandbar, seeing him holding the Pokéball he threw, laughing at him.
“Har, har… come on, let’s go back to the group.”
The Young Six regrouped, some feeling a bit embarrassed than others.
“We don’t have Pokéballs to catch any Pokémon.” Sandbar said to the group.
“Really? I didn’t know that,” Gallus said sarcastically. “Of course we don’t have any Pokéballs!”
“Why are you yelling at me for? Isn’t this your idea?”
“Yeah, I did think of it…” Gallus sighed, looking embarrassed. “I tried to catch one… but I just realized we don’t have any… my bad for shouting.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it man.” Sandbar said, putting a hoof on his shoulder.
“There is a city not that far, maybe they sell Pokéballs.” Ocellus said, looking at the map.
“Good idea Ocellus, let’s get going then.”
As they tracked their way to Viridian City, they could see the tall buildings in the distance. They finally made it to Viridian City. They looked around the many tall buildings, eventually finding a red building with a Pokéball on the top.
“Is that the place to get Pokéballs?” Silverstream asked curiously.
“I don’t think so. This place is called the Pokémon Center. This place helps heal Pokémon.” Ocellus said, examining the map.
“Huh, well my Pokémon does look pretty tired.” Smolder said, looking at her injured Charmander.
The group decided to head into the Pokémon Center. Once inside, they saw many people and Pokémon. In the middle bottom of the room, they saw a nurse with a pink dress with a white apron. The group walked over to her, as she greeted them.
“Welcome to the Pokémon Center, my name is Nurse Joy, would you like to heal your Pokémon?” Nurse Joy smiled to the group.
“Yes please. We would like to heal our Pokémon.” Sandbar said, handing over his Pokéball to Nurse Joy.
The others did the same, handing over their Pokéballs to Nurse Joy.
“Your Pokémon will be healed momentarily, please wait here.” Nurse Joy said, leaving for a couple minutes.
As the group waited for there Pokémon to return, Silverstream saw a pink, ovoid Pokémon with stubby arms and dark pink feet.
“What kind of Pokémon is that?” Silverstream said, pointing the Pokédex at the Pokémon.
Chansey, the egg Pokémon,
A rare and elusive POKéMON that is said to bring happiness to those who manage to get it.
“Chansey, Chansey!” The Chansey said, working on injured Pokémon.
“Aww, how cute!”
After a few more minutes, Nurse Joy returned, handing over their Pokéballs. “All of your Pokémon are fully healed, we hope to see you again soon!”
“Thank you very much Nurse Joy, how much do we owe you?” Sandbar said, pulling out some Pokédollars out of his bag.
“No need for that my dear, this is free healthcare for all trainers. You don’t have to pay for healing your Pokémon.” Nurse Joy smiled warmly to Sandbar.
“Really? Wow, thank you Nurse Joy.” Sandbar returned a smile.
The group waved goodbye to Nurse Joy, exiting the building in search of the Pokémart. Eventually, they found a blue building with the same Pokéball icon just like the Pokémon center.
“This must be the place.” Gallus said, stepping inside the building.
The others followed suit, entering the building. Once inside, the group saw shelves of many assortments of items and a few people shopping. Gallus walked over to the cashier, to which greeted them.
“Welcome to the Pokémart, what can I get for you?” The cashier asked the group.
“Yes, we would like some Pokéballs please?” Sandbar asked the cashier.
“Certainly! How much do you need?”
The group thought for a moment, turning to Ocellus, to which she deadpanned. “According to how much we have and how many of us are here, my calculations say… 12 Pokéballs should be enough.”
“12 Pokéballs, certainly! That’ll be ₽2,400 please.”
Gallus handed the cashier the money, as the cashier handed them 12 Pokéballs.
“And I’ll give you a Premier Ball as a bonus.” The cashier said, handing them a white Pokéball.
“Oh, thank you very much.” Sandbar said, grabbing the Premier Ball and putting it in his bag.
“Is there anything else i can do for you all today?”
“Nope, that should be it. Thank you.”
“Come back soon!” The cashier said, waving goodbye to the group.
The group exited the Pokémart, looking at the map.
“Alright, where do we go now?” Smolder said to the others.
“Hmm… it says here that we need to go to the second route in order to reach Pewter City.” Ocellus replied.
“What are we waiting for! Yona wants to catch Pokémon!” Yona stomped her hooves excitedly.
The group nodded, as they were heading out of Viridian City. As they were about to leave, Gallus stopped in his tracks, seeing a building with the words ‘Viridian City Gym.’
“Guys, look! A gym!” Gallus said, running over to the Viridian Gym.
“Gallus, wait!” Sandbar said, running after him, the others following suit.
Gallus and the rest got to the Viridian Gym. As Gallus was about to walk in, he was stopped by a man dressed in black with a red R symbol on the center of his shirt.
“Woah there! Let me see your seven badges.” The man said, looking at Gallus.
“What?! Seven badges! We don’t even have one!” Gallus said in surprise.
“No badges? Then I’m afraid you can’t come in until you have all seven badges.” The man said, blocking the door.
Gallus growled at the man in frustration, storming off, the others catching up to him.
“Man, I wanted to fight that gym, it’s was right there, why can’t we just go in and challenge the gym leader?” Gallus mumbled in annoyance.
“Maybe this gym leader is the strongest of them all, I don’t think we can take it on just yet.” Sandbar said to Gallus.
“Maybe you’re right, as much as I hate to admit it.”
“Come on, let’s go the Pewter City Gym, that’s what the Professor said to go first.”
Gallus nodded, as the group left Viridian City, one day to return. The group walked through the second route, this time, more prepared than were originally.
“Alright everyone, let’s split up again, this time, we have Pokéballs to catch some Pokémon, but we only have enough for two for each of us,” Sandbar said, handing everyone two Pokéballs each. “Let’s try to use them wisely, or not, it’s up to you really.”
The group split up once again, searching for Pokémon to battle and catch. Sandbar wondered around aimlessly, looking for any sight of Pokémon, until he spotted a Caterpie.
“Aha, my new Pokémon member! Go, Ghastbar!” Sandbar said, throwing his Pokéball, releasing his Gastly.
“Gastly!” Gastly shouted out loud.
The Caterpie looked at the two, preparing its battle stance, shooting out string from its mouth.
“Ghastbar, dodge it and use lick!”
Gastly dodge the string skillfully, getting up close to give it a lick. When the Caterpie got licked, static electricity went through its body, immobilizing it.
“Now’s my chance, go Pokéball!” Sandbar said, throwing a Pokéball at the Caterpie.
The Pokéball hit the Caterpie, immediately sucking it inside. Sandbar watched the Pokéball shake around on the ground.
1 shake…
2 shakes…
3 shakes…

Sandbar watch as the Pokéball stopped moving, walking over to the Pokéball.
“Alright! I caught a Caterpie!” Sandbar said to himself, picking up the Pokéball, releasing the Caterpie out of the Pokéball. “Nice to meet you Caterpie, I’m Sandbar, your new trainer.”
“Caterpie!” The Caterpie chanted happily.
After many hours of searching, battling, and catching Pokémon, it was starting to get dark. The Young Six regrouped to each other, ready to show the rest what they caught.
“Well everyone, did anyone catch anything?” Sandbar asked the others.
Smolder chuckled, taking a Pokéball out. “I got one right here.”
Smolder tossed the Pokéball, unleashing a purple mammal like Pokémon.
“Nidoran!” The Pokémon shouted to the group.
“Whoa! It looks so cool!” Silverstream said excitedly, getting up to its face.
Sandbar took out the Pokédex and pointed it at the Nidoran.
”Nidoran (Male), the poison pin Pokémon,
Stiffens its ears to sense danger. The larger its horns, the more powerful its secreted venom. This species is males only.”
Silverstream, after listening to the Pokédex entry, looked back at the Nidoran, before growling a bit at her, causing her to back up.
“I caught this little guy while exploring. I given him a nickname as well, Spikoran!”
“Awww, you named it after Spike, your little boyfriend.” Gallus snickered to himself, getting punched on the shoulder by Smolder.
“That’s great Smolder! What about the rest of you guys?” Sandbar said to the rest.
The others stayed silent, some kicking up some dirt.
“All I kept finding were these purple rat creatures, they looked boring in my opinion.” Gallus said, crossing his arms.
“Yona tried catching Pokémon, but Pokémon ran from Yona!” Yona said, stomping her hooves, looking upset.
“I loved all that I saw! I tried to catch some, they kept getting out of the Pokéballs… and running away.” Silverstream said sadly.
“I was more observing them than catching them.” Ocellus said, scratching her head.
“Well, that’s alright, you’ll catch some eventually. I, on the other hand, caught two.” Sandbar said, holding out his two Pokéballs.
“What?! No way, you must be lying or something!” Gallus said, crossing his arms, not believing him.
Sandbar threw the two Pokéballs, unleashing his Caterpie and his newly caught Pidgey.
“Wow! They’re so cute!” Silverstream said excitedly.
“Pfft, show off.” Gallus rolled his eyes, smirking a bit.
“Yup, I even gave my Pidgey a nickname, Featherbar!” Sandbar said to the group.
“Featherbar? Really? First it was Ghastbar, now Featherbar? Did you name your Caterpie Bugbar?” Smolder crossed her arms, chuckled a bit.
“I was kinda thinking of it, but decided not to.”
“Oh course you were.”
The group looked up at the sky, seeing the sun going down.
“We should probably call it a night, it’s starting to get dark.” Sandbar said, setting up the camping equipment.
The others nodded, settling up their sleeping bags and making a small fire. Once they all settled down, they all said their goodnights, before falling asleep.
And so, with new Pokémon on their roosters, the Young Six were are now getting some rest, preparing for their first gym battle. Gallus, however, was still awake, staring at the night sky.
“One day Ace, I will have a rematch with you, and win this time.” Gallus said to himself, before falling off to sleep.
As the journey continues…
