Through Light, Through Dark

Listen closely and I will tell a tale,
of a sisterhood ended too soon
and that of a frightful monster
who was imprisoned in the moon.
So there once was a land
that history had never known,
a place where the seeds of peace
and prosperity were sown.
This one was a land where
the magic of friendship had hold
and in those yesteryears
the fury of war was yet to be told.
And in this graceful realm,
a paradise called Equestria
there lived two alicorn sisters,
named Luna and Celestia.
One princess was strong,
and the younger demure,
both of them regal
but different for sure.
Their differences were strength,
it was a bond they could share,
and nothing could come between them
an undeniably inseparable pair.
They lived a life of luxury,
second by second and day by day
and all that sat on their minds
was the yearning to play and play and play.
They also shared a friend,
an alicorn, and Nexus was his name,
the only stallion in their group,
but they loved him all the same.
And so the three grew as one
sharing laughter and sharing fright,
they frolicked in the sunshine
and sat by the hearth at night.
But as all reality does,
time began to pass them by,
the land soon came to turmoil
and the threat of war was nigh!
Nexus went to serve his part
to fight with the rest of his race.
Luna and 'Tia waved him from their hearts,
both locking to memory his face.
The war raged on in fury,
like a gigantic solar fare
and the two princesses were pressed to fight
protect and do their share.
Both princesses felt the bloodshed,
in the battles that lasted long,
but finally they were victorious
and they played their victory song.
The kingdom was rebuilt
and the king and queen took their thrones
and the sad memory was passed
that this was a kingdom of bones.
The land flourished and spread
under all their righteous gaze,
but sadness sat upon them,
because they could only count the days.
For the king had grown sick
and his days of rule were past.
And on one solemn day,
the king finally breathed his last.
The kingdom mourned their ruler,
but it hit hardest on his wife.
And so it was another solemn day,
on which she took her life.
The sisters ruled together,
and their reign could not have been sooner,
given was the bright day for Celestia,
and the secret night for Luna.
Now, it was a bright and sunshiny day
and possibly the most fateful of them all,
that a handsome, lonesome stranger
strolled right into their marble hall.
"My Princesses!" Nexus called
with excitement in his voice,
"My campaign is finally ended,
and I return of my own choice!"
Luna and Celestia were ecstatic with glee,
they hugged him with all their might
then proclaimed "We must celebrate!"
and the feast lasted long into the night.
But it was sad tidings
that Nexus had brought tonight,
and the resulting news and horror
froze everypony solid with fright.
"The war was hard and brutal,
it shattered both my body and my mind.
Many ponies fell in battle and alas,
I am now the last of my kind."
Nexus needed a mate,
and just that much was clear.
"Celestia is perfect for him"
became the mutter they could hear.
But their Nexus was now different,
His body tall and strong,
Celestia loved him right away
and the cherubim began their song.
Celestia and Nexus began acourting
and their love was on the rise,
but from over the horizon
Luna watched with jealous eyes.
Fury overtook her body
and burned through every vein,
her eyes became a crimson red
and pitch-black became her mane.
Now Luna was a mask,
and the inside was a Nightmare,
one with vengeance on her mind
and malice in her stare.
The problem though was Nexus,
who had stared right past the sun
and fallen for the beauty that
young Luna had become.
He met with her at once
to talk beside the throne
and just like a majestic tree
their love had begun to be grown.
Their secret lasted for many days
each sister more aware,
until the tension finally broke,
the Sun-God confronted the Nightmare.
"This has gone on too long, my sister dark"
Celestia cried out in rage,
her fury was the animal,
her body was the cage.
"I concur!" crowed sweet Luna,
with Nightmare at her side
"The time has finally come
for Nexus to choose his bride!"
Nexus was in panic,
with sweat upon his brow,
how could he placate this beast,
and stop this frightful row?
"My darlings," he said to them both,
bowing low with his horn,
"I cannot simply choose,
lest our comraderie be ever torn."
Now Celestia and Luna were enraged,
and fury was all they saw,
"The time is nigh!" they cried together,
"Now this IS WAR!"
And so the battle raged,
through every land and sea
a battle of decision,
to be the bride to be.
The war was neverending
each army evenly matched,
and throughout all of this bloodshed
the sisterhood was slowly sapped.
The war raged for a year,
ground gained, and then lost
the melee went through sunshine,
rain, hail, thunder and frost.
A ceasefire was called
on one spectacular night
that looked upon both sisters
locked in a vicious fight.
"Time to stop my rulers!
It is with good news that I ride,
Nexus has relented and
will subsequently choose his bride!"
The armies were dispersed
and the siege cannons put away,
the only attention being drawn
to this, a momentous day.
So they found Nexus waiting
beside the Octaplex Crown,
that artifact of kingly power,
of righteous renown.
Both the sisters stood before him,
expecting the news they wished to hear,
and not being chosen by him
was their one and only fear.
"So come now my prince"
whispered fair Celestia
"Who will be your queen,
and the one to rule Equestria."
"Although I am disappointed by you both,"
Nexus sighed, for all Equestria to hear,
"This is a decision that will elate one of you
and damage the other beyond repair."
"I have chosen, and I am sorry,
but this is for Equestria.
My final choice has to be
my childhood friend, Sweet Celestia."
With those words uttered
and the crowd began to rejoice
the Octaplex Crown lowered to his head
a reward for his painful choice.
"Hah!" cried Celestia,
"Fair sister, now what will you do?"
Enraged, Nightmare Moon yelled,
"If I can't have him, then neither will you!"
In a horrible silver streak,
her lightning then flashed down
and from on top of Nexus's head
toppled the Octaplex Crown.
He tumbled to the floor
and Celestia began to scream,
Nightmare shook her head
as if waking from a dream.
"My sister! What have I done?!" Luna screamed
while Celestia cradled his head and cried,
and that was another solemn day
on which the great Nexus had died.
The weight of guilt was overwhelming
fury filled Celestia's mind,
for her love, her friend
and the last of male Alicorn kind.
"Your punishment will be severe!" she yelled,
"Where you're going I won't see you soon."
"Say goodbye my dear sister,
Now say hello for me to the moon!"
Through light and through darkness,
both sisters did weep,
because the love of their lives
they had failed to keep.
And so with one fatal strike,
the Balance had been set,
What happens now? What follows next?
One thousand years of regret.
