Chapter 1: Awakening

I was dead, I had to be dead, and I'm now waiting my judgement in the Void. These thoughts stuck in my head as all I could see was blackness. I was so sure of it, until I felt a dull but constant pain shoot through my body. I also heard several voices around me, voices that I've never heard before, yet they were calming. One sounded regal, like a Madam from one of the big cities. The other sounded quite intelligent, yet had a sort of sweetness to it. But I had no clue who these voices were, nor where I was, and that frightened me. I attempted to move my arm, but was only greeted with a sharp pain. I gave a sharp cry out suddenly, well I knew I was alive and awake, so did the voices now. I then attempted to open my eyes, and was greeted by a bright light, in a small hospital room it looked like. I turned my head slightly and discovered the sources of the voices, they were...ponies? One was tall, a flowing sparkling mane made out of many colors, the other was smaller with a purple coat with a purple mane, a raspberry streak running through it. No...I knew exactly what they were, they were Equestrians, the sentient ponies neighboring my home country. I had only learned about them in school, as the two nations hardly made contact.

"Greetings young man," the regal pony said, "Please do not be alarmed, you are safe from harm now. Your wounds cared for."

I was speechless, I knew they were sentient and smart beings, but I never realized they could speak like humans, or have buildings such as ours.

"You must be wondering where you are. Well my young human, you are in Equestria. Ponyville to be exact," she told me.

She paused, allowing me to get my thoughts together and ask any questions.

"Wh-Who are you two? And how did I get here...the last thing I remember was...oh no," I said, as dread and sorrow engulfed my mind and I remembered the events that had happened what seemed moments ago: the bombs and the death all around me.

She gave a remorseful look, as did the purple one, as she started to explain, "I am Princess Celestia my dear, and this is my student Twilight Sparkle."

"Uh, hello there Mr. Human." Twilight said, uneasy as she saw how upset I was.

"May we know your name as well?" The tall white horse, Celestia asked.

I paused a moment, feeling sick and confused, but I answered "My name is Evan. It's Evan."

Celestia gave a nod as she continued, "I have known about this human war for quite a long time, and I have kept an eye on our borders between our two nations for even longer. I first realized something was amiss as a group of human's had tried to cross into Equestria's waters on a boat. Which they did."

She paused and I took the moment to say "Well what happened to them? Were they refugees?"

She gave a slight nod and added "That is what I made of it, for they were soon discovered by a group of your flying ships, and they opened fire, and all but one were killed."

I looked at the goddess horse and asked, "All but one? Where is that one?"

I was surprised and hopeful for another survivor of Juno.

She let out a sigh as she explained, "That one was you. Your body was enveloped in an aura of magic far greater than I've seen in years; it had saved your life. You had washed ashore, barely breathing, but alive. So we took you in, and managed your wounds."

A single thought had ran through my mind, "Dusky didn't leave me, and he died trying to get me to safety. Thanks Dusky, may you rest peacefully in the Void."

After moments of silence and me putting everything together I looked up again and asked "So...what now? I appreciate you saving me, I do. But I have nothing left, my home, my friends and my...family. They're all gone."

Celestia then put on possibly the royalist attitude I have ever seen and simply said, "You are to stay here and recover. Your nation is no longer safe for you, and I feel this is the best decision. Ponyville will be your new home. We also know hardly anything about our neighboring humans, or their magical abilities. And we would like to study that with you."

My face was contorted in anger as I looked at this pony.

"So," I began, looking into Celestia's eyes, "you saved me, just to study me. To study a human with magical abilities? And you expect me to comply with that?"

Celestia seemed taken aback on how I talked to her, but I didn't care. She wasn't my leader so what did I care?

"No, that's not what I meant at all," she started. "Yes, we want to learn more about humans and their magic, but we also want you to be safe. It takes a strong man, and an even stronger willpower to live through that ordeal. And we believe you deserve to live a new life."

I sat there speechless for a long time as the purple pony, no her name was Twilight, looked at me with a caring face that I knew was genuine.

"And what do you think about this Twilight Sparkle?" I asked, as she had been quiet through the whole conversation.

She gave a surprised look as the words left my mouth, caught off guard she responded quickly but nervously "Well..when you were brought here everypony was very worried about you, me and my friends helped out all we could while you were unconscious, and if things are really as bad as they seem then yes, I do believe you should stay here."

I almost gave a smile, almost. I could tell she was a sweet person, err pony. But I was still in shock about everything, I asked a few questions, trying to block the memories, even just for a second.

"Where will I live? And I need human clothes and food, humans can't walk around like you and I can't eat hay." I said with a bit of bitterness behind it.

"You can stay with me Mr. Human! Uh, I mean Evan!" Twilight burst out.

I gave her a surprised look and she shyly chuckled a bit.

"Uh, yeah I have an extra bed and we know that you're magic, and I'm magic too!" she exclaimed.

She proudly pointed to her horn with a big smile. Ah, she was a unicorn, the race of magic ponies.

Twilight spoke again without giving me a chance, "And don't worry about clothes and food. My friend Rarity is making you clothes right as we speak, and we also have fruit and vegetables for you to eat!"

She seemed quite proud of herself, I could tell she cared and wanted to help out anyway she could, but I was a broken man. So I simply thanked her and gave her the best smile I could muster, even though it was completely fake.

I thought about what had happened, what this princess and Twilight had said. She was not commanding or ordering me to stay here, it was quite frankly the best decision for me.

"So Princess, you'd let a wounded human from a war torn home just live in one of your cities?"

She looked on with a pleasant smile and said "It would be my honor, you need to recover, you need to start a new life."

I cringed at that, the immense sorrow had subsided, replaced with anger and bitterness. The only thought in my head was that I should have died at Juno, but now here I am, an object of curiosity in a foreign country.

I looked up and stared at the two Equestrians, vision blurry with remnants of tears, and simply said, "I guess I have to, but I will never recover. I hope you can all cope with that. Because I can't."
