Author's Note: Do not read unless you want an official closing to the story. This will have a death in it. You have been warned.

It was a beautiful day in the mountains outside of Ponyville. The perfect day for flight training. Spike was now helping Rainbow Dash to teach the filly Pegasi.

“Are you ready to start?”

“Yes sir”

“Today I want you ponies to just fly around and try to stay in the air as long as possible. I will be flying around and observing you ponies. The only rule is no one is allowed to fly around in Ghastly Gorge. There are too many dangers for inexperienced flyers. For example, there are the cave eels. They won’t hesitate to try and bite your wings off. Can everyone promise me they won’t go there?”

“Yes Spike!”

“Alright, everypony start flying”

All the pegasi successfully started flying. Spike started to observe them all. Most of them were doing excellent. There were a few who were having trouble getting the wing rhythm right. And then there was Rainbow Dash jr. The best of the class, but she always had to show off. She was doing loops, corkscrews, you name it.

Why do I have to show up to these lame classes? I am already a perfect flyer. I don’t need these classes. I bet I could fly through Ghastly Gorge all by myself.

Rainbow Dash jr started flying towards Ghastly Gorge as Spike was taking a head count. Only problem, there was one pony missing.

“Stay here everypony, I’m going to go look for Rainbow Dash jr.”

Spike flew up and looked around, he found her flying around in the Gorge. He flew as fast as he possibly could towards her. He finally caught up to her.

“What do you think you’re doing here?” Anger in Spike’s voice.

“I’m good enough to fly through here with ease.”

“No you’re not. The only other pony to fly through here was Rainbow Dash, you’re mother, the best flyer around (after me). She ended up getting her wing caught under a rock during an avalanche. Luckily Tank saved her life.”

“Really? Even my mom couldn’t fly cleanly through here.”

“That’s right! Now let’s get out of here before everyone starts to worry about us.”

“Alright Spike.”

Spike grabbed her and held her near his chest to protect her from the stalagmites. He had just arrived near the homes of the cave eels.

“Rainbow jr, I need to listen to me no matter what happens. We are about to fly through the homes of the cave eels. Just hold on to me and you should be fine.”

Spike started to feel nervous. He never flew through here before. The eels always scared him. He never dared go to this gorge after seeing what happened to Rainbow Dash sr. Spike started to breath deeply. He looked left and right. There must have been at least twenty caves. Spike pictured the way in his head. When he was comfortable with his plan, he flew as fast as he could towards the exit. He was dodging every eel that crossed his path. He could feel Rainbow jr shaking in fear.

“Don’t worry Rainbow, were almost out of here.”

Spike was just about to make it out, but he didn’t notice the cave to his left. The eel came out and tore a hole in Spike’s left wing. Spike quickly threw Rainbow jr in the air.

“Rainbow fly out of here and get help. Hurry!”

song

Spike was falling at dangerously fast pace. He tried slowing his fall by flapping his right wing, but it was to no avail. He was simply too heavy. He tried to look for a groove in the gorge to hold on to. But he couldn’t see any. Before Spike knew it, he fell on a stalagmite. It had impaled him right in the heart. Spike was losing blood quickly. As he was dying, all he could think about was Rarity.

I’m sorry Rarity… I won’t be around to help you in your old age. Life can be cruel sometimes. If it weren’t for you in the first place, I would have never had the great life we lived. For that I thank you. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

“Spike! What were you thinking!? Why would you even attempt that?” Anger and worry in her voice.

“Rarity why would you do that?”

Spike quickly started looking for the vial.

“Looking for this?” Rarity said, holding the vial in her hoof.

“I did that because I needed to tell you something Spike…”

“I don’t care what you have to say, you made it pretty clear you didn’t want me in your life. So why don’t you make yourself useful for once and leave me alone.” Spike said tears forming around his eyes.

“I can’t do that Spike, I need to talk to you and you’re going to listen whether you like it or not. This is important for the both of us.”

“Oh really. What could you say that would benefit me?”

“I… Spike… Will you be my special-stallion?”

“Are… are… you serious?”

“Yes. I have thought about it, and I want to give us a chance.”

“You’re not just saying that to make me feel better?”

“Of course not Spike. I am always serious. Rarity would never joke around with such things.”

“Already then, I accept.” Tears of joy were flowing out of Spike’s eyes.

Rarity grabbed Spike and hugged him as tight as possible. She started crying as well. She was crying because Spike was finally her special dragon. She never thought it would be possible, but there it was, the moment she wanted the most. For Spike it was the moment he was dreaming of ever since he first saw Rarity. The mare of his dreams finally asked to go on a date with him. Rarity’s fur was now soaked and Spike’s chest was also soaked.

“I love you Spike.”

“I love you too Rarity.”

Nothing could separate us after that point. Nothing… At the Grand Gala I proposed to you, you accepted my proposal. It was the best day of my life. Nothing could ruin that day for me. You looked beautiful in that dress. The dress you worked so hard on.

“Don’t you ever take a break?”

“Spike you know this dress has to look perfect.”

“You know you look perfect already, and every dress looks perfect on you.”

“Spike… You always know what to say.”

Spike walked up to Rarity and gave her a passionate kiss on the lips.

“Alright Spike I’ll take a break, but only if you promise to help me on my dress later.”

“You don’t need to ask, I always helped you with your dresses in the past and I always will.”

Spike and Rarity walked into the living room. They continued to kiss passionately.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ll miss you’re perfect smile, you’re beautiful curled lavender purple mane, you’re impeccable sapphire blue eyes and your snow white coat…

Spike was suddenly interrupted by a bright purple flash. It was Twilight.

“Oh, no Spike. We need to get you out of here.”

Twilight used her teleportation spell to bring the both of them back to the top of the gorge. Rarity was now in view; a look of horror covered her face as she saw the shape Spike was in.

“Spike… Spike what happened?” Rarity asked as she ran up to him.

“One of the eels took a bite out of my wing." He said showing Rarity the wing.

"I started falling immediately and tried to slow the fall with my good wing, but I was too heavy and I eventually fell on a stalagmite. It pierced straight through my heart. While I was waiting for someone to help me, all I could think about was how wonderful my life was with you Rarity…” Spike coughed, a little blood shot out of his mouth.

“What do you mean was? You’re going to make it Spike, Twilight can heal you with her magic.” Rarity said worry in her voice from the thought of Spike dying.

“I can’t guarantee this will work, but I’ll do my best. Spike this should close the hole in your heart and stop the bleeding. Let me know if you feel anything.”

“Okay Twi.”

Twilight’s horn lit up, surrounding Spike with her usual purple hora. Nothing seemed to happen.

“I don’t feel anything Twi.” Spike said, coughing out more blood.

Twilight kept trying, she couldn’t lose Spike either. She tried for twenty minutes now, but nothing was happening. Both Twilight and Rarity had the same thought, this was the last time they would see Spike.

“I’m sorry but it didn’t work Rarity, I’ve never had the chance to practice this spell on a dragon. Dragon anatomy is very different compared to pony anatomy. I’m sorry Rarity but I can’t do anything else. I’ve tried my best.” Twilight said lowering her head in sadness. She failed… Failed. She couldn’t get that word out of her head.

“Twilight, Rarity please come closer.” Spike said in a very weak voice.

He in turn hugged the both of them.

“Twilight I want you to promise me you’ll help Rarity out when she needs it. Whether it be moral support, or it be help with her dresses or anything in general, that you will be there willing to help her through this hard time.”

“I promise Spike.” Twilight was unable to hold back any tears.

“And Rarity I want you to promise me that you will help Twilight whenever she is need, no matter what the case is. She will also need you there to help her through this hard time.”

“I promise Spike.” Rarity couldn’t hold back her tears either. Rarity gave one final kiss to Spike on the lips. She savored the last kiss she could ever give him.

“I will be waiting for you on the other side Rarity. I…love…you…Rarity…and…Twilight.” Spike, was no longer breathing, his heart had stopped. He had passed away.

Rarity and Twilight held each other in a hug, crying in each other’s shoulder. They could not believe what just happened, they just lost Spike. Twilight warped to the nearest town and asked for a carriage. She arrived back at the scene an hour later with the carriage. They carried Spike’s body all the way to Canterlot castle. On the way there, all Rarity could think about was how she could have saved Spike if she would have been there to support him from the beginning. At the same time Twilight could not help but feel like a failure, not being able to save Spike. After what felt like an eternity, they finally arrived at the Canterlot castle. The guards noticed it was Twilight and let her through, they were greeted by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna.

“Twilight what brings you to the castle today?”

“This is what brought us here today.” Twilight guided both Princesses to the carriage. She lifted the sheet to reveal Spike’s body.

“We are so sorry Twilight and Rarity. If you do mind us asking how did Spike pass away?”

“He was saving Rainbow Dash jr from the eels from Ghastly Gorge, when one of the eels took a bite out of his wing. He wasn’t able to slow his fall and fell onto a stalagmite. It impaled him right in the heart. By the time I got him out of the gorge, it was too late, he had lost too much blood. The reason I came here, was to ask you Princesses if I could please bury his body in the castle graveyard.”

“Of course Twilight follow me.”

Twilight and Rarity followed the Princesses past the castle’s gardens and into the graveyard. Princess Celestia chose a spot in the far back, as that was the only spot big enough for Spike’s body. She used her magic to dig the perfect hole; all four of them slowly levitated Spike’s body into the grave. They all stood there in a moment of silence. They all started to form tears around their eyes. They had all lost a good friend that day. They eventually made their way back to the entrance of the castle.

“Feel free to come over anytime you two to visit Spike. I will send a letter to all of your close friends in Ponyville letting them know what took place.”

“Thank you Princess.”

Twilight and Rarity slowly walked back into town. They each went to their house. Rarity walked inside, she felt alone now that Spike wasn’t around. She walked into her bedroom. It still smelled like Spike. She picked up the bed sheets and started to smell them. She could smell Spike’s scent. That was all she could do at that moment. She wanted Spike back; she wasn’t ready to leave him. She laid down on the bed and wrapped herself in the blankets. She continued to smell the sheets. She eventually fell asleep. She dreamed of Spike that night.

One year later…

It was the one-year anniversary of Spike’s death. Rarity had a made a special dress for the occasion. She met up with Twilight at Spike’s grave. They both brought flowers and placed them over his grave. Twilight spoke first.

“Spike you were the best assistant, brother and son anyone could ask for. You were the best thing that happened to me. Without you I wouldn’t have made any friends, I wouldn’t have a friend growing up in Canterlot, I wouldn’t have someone to take care of me when I was in need, I wouldn’t have a life outside of my books if it wasn’t for you. You always made my day better just by being there. Here’s to you Spike the best thing that happened to me.” Tears were flowing out of Twilight’s eyes. It was now Rarity’s turn.

“My Spikey-Wikey. You were the only dragon that loved me for who I was. You always knew what to say to make my day better, you helped me through thick and thin, you always made dress making a lot easier and faster. You left us too soon Spike, I still miss you, I’m still not ready to let you go, but I have to, even though that’s the last thing I want to do. I will never forget you Spike, you will always be in my heart and I am looking forward to the day I can meet up with you again on the other side.” Rarity was also letting out tears.

The gravestone read:

Spike the dragon

He left us too soon,

He was the best friend one could have,

And may he forever Rest In Peace

R.I.P.
