Chapter Six: Cognitive Dissonance

Summer had found himself in front of the Golden Oaks library at just a quarter past six. He had left with full confidence as well as full concern that Dancer knew what she was doing. Hoping the library staffed by none other than the Princess's prized student had reference materials unavailable in Fillydelphia, he trotted slowly to the door, drinking in the simple pleasure of watching a small town in the evening.

The evening was proving to be just as lovely as the day had been, with the soft light of the waning sun bathing the town in a brilliant orange glow. It was by this glow that he read the small sign with the hours on it, ascertaining what was already confirmed earlier. Gently, he pushed open the door and trotted inside.

Several ponies occupied the main library. A large red stallion was perusing the reference section, while a smaller pink mare browsed fiction. A gaggle of foals took up most of the main floor's desks, covered in reference guides to cutie marks, Legends and Myths of the Ocean, and, oddly, Starswirl the Bearded's dissertation on teleportation. Shaking his head slightly (and rather hoping those fillies had very, very observant parents), he moved to the reference section, eyes passing over the books with mounting frustration.

"Do you need help finding a book?"

Summer turned, seeing the purple mare before him, and shook his head. "No...I mean, I do, but I don't know if you have any on what I need-I need books about conservation engineering."

He waited patiently while she tapped her chin, more skilled librarian eyes dissecting the stacks. "I've heard a lot about them! I think it's an amazing field, and very important. It might not matter to this generation or the one after it, but eventually, expansion is going to just kill our natural resources! Keeping a balance is going to be critical to the continuing success of our species and planet, after all!"

"Well, uh, thank you."

She turned back to him, surprised. "Oh! Is that what you do? I'm sorry, I didn't think-well, I didn't think." Her eyes flicked to his wings for the barest second before flicking back. Awkwardly, she turned back to the stacks. "Well! I don't see any here. I know I have some on order, so you could always check back in a week or so!"

"Ah, that's okay. I'll be back home then, I'm only visiting. Dancer asked me to send her regards," he said, dipping his head slightly before turning from the books, shaking his shaggy red mane from his eyes for the umpteenth time that day.

"Oh, are you her coltfriend? Please tell her I said hello." A loud call of filly voices filled the air for a moment, sounding suspiciously like Cutie Mark Crusaders Underwater Explorers, yeah!, and Twilight's eyes shrunk to pinpricks before she giggled nervously and began making her way back to the fillies. "Sorry, I need to...get a lid on this."

"I totally understand." He waved her off, chuckling under his breath as he watched the harried librarian gently pull the reference materials from them. Her lightly scolding and serious voice followed him as he snagged a book from the shelf, Natural Anomalies and You: What to Expect from the Unexpected. He settled onto a pillow by the stacks, ears catching something about 'splicing' and 'your sister' and 'sweet Celestia, why', interspersed with squeaks that could only be the children talking.

He smiled fondly before cracking open the tome, green eyes dropping to the table of contents. He knew there were strange creatures in the Everfree forest, monsters hewn from the very living trees themselves, and wanted to be prepared in case he ran across anything of the sort during field work. If they were there, they might be elsewhere, too. His orange hoof scanned down to Timberwolves, and figuring that was as good a place to start as any, he turned to the relevant section and settled in.

His thoughts wandered as he struggled to pay attention to his reading. Today marked new territory in his relationship with Midnight Dancer. Though he knew her well for many years prior to their official relationship, and knew mentally that she cheerfully carried on relationships with either sex, and he was fine with it academically speaking, to see it in action threw him for an unexpected loop emotionally. His stomach flipped and squirmed, bodily processes beginning to mirror his mental processes.

Free hoof worrying the floor beneath him distractedly, eyes scanning words that his brain was simply not taking in, he thought.

It had been winter. The cheerful little home that the roommates-turned-lovers shared housed the two pegasi that night, both snuggling close before the hearth as a merry blaze roared and chased out the cold. Her head had been on his shoulder, perpetually messy violet mane tickling his ear as they had laid together in companionable silence.

"Summer?"

"Mmm?"

Those large blue eyes had turned to his face as she shifted, a brown hoof reaching over to cover one of his. "I just wanted you to know that if there's somepony you'd want to sleep with that's not me, it's fine as long as you tell me first."

His eyes had shot open, staring down into hers. Firelight danced and reflected in her own eyes, turning the blue almost to black, a frank expression of honesty and love on her face.

"But...I'm not trying to do that, I love YOU."

A giggle like light bells washed over him as she nuzzled up beneath his chin into the scruffy orange fur. "Oh, my love. I don't mind somepony else having your body, so long as I always have your heart."

Blushing, he'd smiled down at her.

"You're amazing."

They had laid like that for awhile.

And it had held true. And even when he failed to tell her that one time, and worked so hard to keep it a secret, she still had that small smile as she forgave him.

Summer gave up on the book, closing it with one hoof and huffing, laying his head down on it for a moment. It was a little late to have second thoughts, he reasoned, and he could always talk to her about this later. They talked about everything, after all.

As if on cue, his back twinged slightly, and he sighed. Almost everything.

Ten minutes later found him laying on a park bench, watching the sun slip past the horizon completely. Many couples were out in the warm evening, strolling together or just sitting beside each other and watching the sunset. Ponyville is beautiful. Kind of wish we could stay here. Sliding his glasses off and resting them on the bench in front of him, he laid his head down on his forelegs, intending only to rest for a few moments.

When his eyes slid open again, it was markedly darker, with Luna's moon making it's way though the sky. He shook himself a bit and hopped off the bench with a groan. Ughhh...I would fall asleep on a bench. Lucky me. At least it's still nice out. Sliding his glasses back into place, he started a slow trot around the park, his muscles finally loosening and blood flowing more freely through his legs as he lost himself in the cadence of his hooffalls on the soft grass. Stopping to stretch his wings out and above, he twisted them to and fro, feeling the gentle wind tugging at his saffron feathers and tempting him onwards and upwards...

And the stars were beautiful. How would it feel to night fly again as he used to when he and Dancer were young? A smile grew on his muzzle as he remembered the teasing games of tag, dashing around and through the clouds, tackling her on one and seeing her dark form framed by wispy white. The air would be much chillier up there, cutting invisible swaths across his body. Soft clouds to lay on and reflect, above everything, and just how amazing would Ponyville look on such a clear night from such a high vantage point? He knew that on such a night, he could see straight into Canterlot from there.

He wavered for a moment, before snapping his wings back down to his sides. No. I'm not ruining this trip with a self-inflicted side trip to the hospital. Tearing his wistful emerald eyes from the sky above, he started an easy, ambling gait through the park.

Most of the foals had gone home, no doubt tucked in and given a kiss by loving parents before drifting off to sleep. The park was sparsely dotted now with a few stargazers and loving couples, along with a few stallions simply enjoying the night like he was himself. Two of which were standing together and staring at...something. One of the couples? Ever curious, Summer trotted closer.

"-just get closer! C'mon, they won't mind."

"I don't know-I'm not lookin for a fight."

The larger of the two, a cream colored stallion, tossed his mossy green mane back as he barked out a laugh. "Nah, come on, I'll show you, they love this. Might even get lucky-one for each of us."

The couple they were eyeballing, a pale green unicorn mare and a light tan earth pony mare, were so far oblivious. Curious, Summer wandered closer as the two stallions approached them. The earth pony broke from her conversation with her mate, looking up quizzically but still friendly at the two. "Hello! Lovely evening tonight! How are you two doing?"  Cheerful teal eyes regarded the two as her foreleg draped around the unicorn, who snuggled closer in the grass to her lover.

The larger stallion snorted. "Yeah, lovely night...the view could improve a lot, though..."

Summer frowned, stopping roughly ten feet behind the two.

Looking around curiously, the two mares regarded the stallions with with confusion. "How do you mean?" asked the unicorn.

"Well, you know, my buddy and I here, we saw you from across the park. You both look hot laying there all cuddled up together, but you could do a lot more than just cuddle if you come on back with us..." He leered down at the two suggestively, his friend finally getting into the spirit of things and slapping him on the withers with one hoof.

"Yeah, you ladies interested?" His dark amber eyes met the unicorn's as he waggled his brow.

The two mares looked at each other and giggled nervously before the earth pony spoke up. "Well, you see, we're together, actually-we're not really looking to add anyone to our relationship, and if we were, it wouldn't be stallions...no offense." Summer noted that her smile had become extremely strained, and her lover's tail flicked in an agitated manner as she snuggled a bit closer.

"Alright, alright...well, hows about you two just put on a little show here for us, hmm? The cuddling is cute but it doesn't do much for the eyes. Gimmie something to go home with in my head, at least!" The larger of the two came a little closer, smirking still.

The earth pony mare, apparently having heard enough, stood and locked her eyes with his while her marefriend stood behind. Summer could see the small, tell tale glow of magic building in her horn, golden eyes beneath looking both worried and angry.

The tan earth pony regarded the large stallion coolly. "Our relationship isn't a show, and we're not trained pets that kiss and fuck at your command. I suggest you leave. Do I make myself clear?"

The stallion glared back. "No. Not much you can do about it, sweetheart." He gave her a little shove with his forehoof. "Go on, now. I'm waiting. You know you want to."

Her posture relaxed, lids sliding down over her eyes in an almost...seductive gaze? Her posture loosened, tension running out of her body as she kept her eyes locked with his. Summer sat down, rather confused, and opted to continue to watch. Was she enjoying this? His eyes wandered to the unicorn, who had abruptly cut off her magic and had backed up about three paces, a worried frown creasing her features. The larger stallion also relaxed upon seeing her posture change, and that ridiculous smirk came back.

Summer nearly missed what happened next. The earth pony mare spun in a fluid motion, kicking her hind legs up and out with a speed rivaled only by the Royal Guards. She caught him full in the chest with both rear hooves, sending his unprepared body flying back into his hapless friend, both landing in a tangle directly to Summer's right.

Gaping, Summer looked back at her. She adjusted her hair with one forehoof, glancing back over her shoulder at her handiwork. Other park patrons had noticed, and the entire area fell under a hush as she flicked her tail disdainfully in their direction. "I said no. Come on, Lyra." Lyra, a happy smile on her face and a worried look in her eyes, fell into step beside her marefriend as she trotted past, the two cresting a hill at the edge of the park towards town.

Glancing back down at the two stallions that were now finally disengaging from each other, Summer raised an eyebrow before breaking the thick silence. "The hell is wrong with you?"

The larger stallion, still laying on the ground, sputtered. "Me? ME? That crazy bitch just BUCKED ME!"

Summer's second eyebrow joined the first. "I saw and heard the whole thing. What the hell were you thinking, bothering a couple ponies like that? They weren't bothering you."

With the help of his smaller friend, the stallion rose and coughed twice before fixing a baleful glare on Summer. "She was just being a bitch. Her friend was into it, she didn't have to be like that."

Standing as well, Summer fixed his eyes right back. "Her marefriend was terrified. What made you think they'd want to do...what you were asking? Honest question."

He rolled his eyes. "Because they like it when colts watch 'em. Don't you know anything?"

Now it was Summer's turn to smirk. "I know you just got bucked into last week by a mare half your size."

The stallion surged forward, bumping his chest up against Summer's and glaring down. "You're gonna get that beating the mare deserved."

Summer chuckled and nodded, lowering his voice. "Go right ahead. I won't even fight back. All these ponies here, these ponies that know you, that know your family, all they'll see is you beating the hell out of somepony who never struck you. And I'm sure once my marefriend gets wind of it, she'll make sure everyone knows that you beat up a pegasus that couldn't even fly to save himself. So go on, now-I'm waiting." He shook his mane from his eyes, tiny smile starting to play at the corners of his lips.

Another beat of silence. Summer's calm eyes watched the larger pony over the rim of his glasses. With a sudden snort, the pony turned and stalked off, friend in tow.

Letting out a relieved breath he wasn't aware he was holding, Summer sighed. That almost ended...really really badly. Pull it together, Summer. Flashing a quick smile to the ponies that were now beginning to wander off, he did the same himself, meandering in the general direction of the inn.

But they were so...ugh. He trotted a little faster, hooves crossing the line from grass to cobblestone in fluid motion. They were acting like they were entitled to watch a couple mares do...that! He settled into a comfortable canter, legs eating up the distance to the inn. I hope Dancer and Hot Process stayed in the room tonight, with those two sorry excuses for stallions wandering around town.

Glancing up to the nearby clock tower, he noted that several hours had passed. They're probably finished up-I'll head back. I could use a shower... Nodding to himself once, he upped his pace to a gallop, headed back to his mate.

Summer knew, sometimes, that Dancer kind of enjoyed arguing when she knew she was right. Some of the terms thrown around were a bit alien to him. But, really, at this moment, he started to understand one phrase really, really well.

His mate was frozen, head in her forelegs with her dark brown ass thrust up into the air, purple tail cascading to the side over a yellow hoof. The owner of said hoof was also frozen, face wedged in Dancer's marehood and dark brown eyes eying him warily. Even frozen so Summer felt his slumbering cock begin to stir, noting the minute detail of cum glistening in his mate's cunt with the other mare's muzzle coated in it.

Another beat of that awkward silence the orange pegasus had become so intimately acquainted with that day.

Hot Process relaxed imperceptibly. Bit by bit, her body relaxed, before she gave one more slow, calculated lick to Dancer's clit, before winking at him. "Well hey there, Summer."

The spoken words seem to break Dancer out of her trance of embarrassment, and with a sudden flurry of dark legs and feathers, she was standing before him.

"Hey, sweetie! Sorry, I just...she showed up a little late, that's all, I didn't mean for you to have to see and-"

"I wanted to watch. You can keep-" He paused, tilting his head.

Hot Process ghosted up next to Dancer, face still heavy with desire as she eyed Summer's sheath with his turgid cock creeping out of it. "Mmm, and do you have a name for that fella there?" She giggled as she gestured to his dick.

"Cognitive Dissonance," he grumbled, before pushing his lips to Dancer's.
