It was midnight. We had recently found a small van with keys still in the ignition. after a quick check one of the other survivors with me, Lara who is a close friend of mine. I have to admit...I do have feelings for her, not only that but she has been a close friend since I was 3! And I mustn't forget that she has saved my ass from brain hungry zoms numerous times....yes zombies......about 3 months ago....there was an accident at the aux facility in japan. it was a gas spillage...millions died that day but they didn't stay dead! some people lasted longer than others and managed to leave the country before turning over in the countries they fled to...mainly Britain and the USA! from there it quickly spread and within weeks the whole world was infected. except for Madagascar, mind you they shut everything off as soon as Japan went under. by this time everyone else was dead, except Madagascar. of course trying to get there would involve being shot many times with anti-tank missiles, so we didn't even bother trying. but back to the here and now! as I was saying we had recently found a van with the keys still in the ignition! Lara was driving, whilst me and Alex had some LMG's pointed out the windows(don't ya just love undead military). We also managed to find a minigun...it's so heavy but Lara......always has it, and she tends to be very angry.......
"JACK!" shouted the other survivor....Alex
"HUH"
"zoms...twelve a clock"
"Oh yeah.....damn brain dead menaces" I snorted as We began firing controlled bursts of gun fire into the large crowd of former citizens
Alex and me were panting from the run with our supplies and guns, but of course, Lara was just.......annoyed and she had been carrying the heaviest thing we had!
"Right, both of you search for supplies and munitions...I will be on the roof." Said Lara angrily
"ummmm, wheres the armory?" asked Alex sheepishly
"second floor, same as with any other police station" she shrugged
"What if we need to find you?" I cut in
"Ladder next to the stairs"
She stomped off
"What the bloody hell happened to her?"
"Dude....she watched her parents die" I replied sadly
"What, why did no one tell me?"
"She only told me because I was her first real friend. Don't tell her that I told you"
"We should locate the supplies"
Alex was scouring the top floor, whilst I checked the first one....I assumed Lara would be taking out her frustrations on the hoard of attackers outside
Within ten minutes I had found a small office, the table in the middle had a small computer, with no power as is the norm for anything now and a huge stack of papers! there was one however on the other side of the table...A yellow folder with confidential stamped on the front. I walked over to examine the find.
I opened the file and instantly picked out the words 'extraction operation'. I read from the beginning. 'All area 49 member's please report to base immediately! bring some live subjects for testing. Once phase one is complete we will be ready to begin the extraction operation via the experimental phase shifter. the location for base alpha 49 is enclosed' and sure enough the next page had a location enclosed. the base was in death valley, 50 clicks from Las Vegas.
I took this folder straight to Lara, who was definitely very angry with anything not fully alive.
"Anything useful!?" she huffed over the sound of the heavy artillery
"A POSSIBLE WAY OFF OF THIS HELLHOLE!" I proffered the folder to the only person with the capacity to lead this little group
"Phoenix to Las Vegas, and then some..." She said "I suppose we should, not like staying here's gonna do anything for us"
"What about....getting there?" I asked
"There's a chopper on the roof!" answered Alex enthusiastically
They both looked over to me and Lara smiled
"No, no, no, no NO!" I shouted
"DO IT!" Demanded Alex raising a small revolver to my head
"oh yeah, Alex as if I'm falling for that one" I said as I 'accidentally' fired the tazer that was pointed at his chest
"I........hate....you...." He managed to say through clenched teeth as he writhed on the floor
I felt a arm go around my neck, not in a way that suggested I was in a headlock. It was more like a hug "oh, please Jack...please" I heard Lara say "I know about your feelings about me, and I won't hesitate to tell, Alex here..." she whispered in my ear
I felt my jaw drop, and I assumed that if it could have, it would have hit the smooth floor below "H-H-How long have y-y-you known?"
"long enough to know that it's not some petty crush"
The reason I was being blackmailed to fly a helicopter was that my father had been one of those helicopter tour guides, and once he had managed to get me into the place he trained to become a qualified copter flyer! It was the day before he graduated. They had let me try the simulator a few times. It was also a week before the apocalypse, which was part of the reason I initially refused.
I gulped, realizing the threat to my dignity points "Fine just please don't tell Alex"
"Good boy" she said whilst stroking my hair as if I was a dog
"Don't do that! I agreed so don't rustle my jimmies!" I glared at her
"you forget, dear Jack that if it weren't for me you'd be dead! therefore I have the right to rustle your jimmies in front of friends" she giggled
"Oh right sorry I forgot you are the queen of absolute discomfort!" I groaned "and what happened to your four month old foul mood?"
That earned me an angry glare from Lara "Right... Jack come with me to get the chopper started up and Alex, stop lounging and grab the supplies!"
