Field Notes of a Winning Bug Collector
Prologue: The Mare Who Played With Fireflies
Load Full StoryNext ChapterHi, everypony! Wow... I'm not used to being put in the spotlight, like this, but I guess if I ever want to be as cool as my big sister, I've gotta stop being shy... well, here goes. Hi. My name's Flitter, and I love bugs. I know it sounds weird. A young mare who likes bugs, but... I mean look at them! They're just so darn cool! CC says they're gross, but I don't think so.
Well, now that that's out of the way, let's go on with our little tale, shall we? Well, to start it all off, I was born into a pretty small family, right here in Ponyville. It was just me, Mommy, Daddy, and my big sister, Cloudchaser. My mom and dad were both weather ponies, so having them both home at the same time was rare. When I was still a baby, I wasn't allowed to leave the house, unless I was with my mom or dad. I don't blame them, really. Our cloud house was pretty far off the ground, and since I had an adventurous little spirit, and lacked the accompanying ability to fly, falling over the side was a pretty big problem.
When I learned how to fly, CC became a really big influence on me. If you asked our parents, they'd say she was a bad influence, but she was still my best friend. Even to this day, she still tends to try to get me in trouble. Like that time she tried to pull me into a threesome with her and Thunderlane. Of course I didn't do it. What kind of pony do you think I am? Either way, it's tough being the younger sister of a cool pony, but I get by.
Anyway, I'm sure you want to know how I learned about my love of buzzing little insects. Well, it's actually a pretty awesome story.
It was a nice, sunny day in Ponyville, and CC and I were having a picnic in the field below our cloud house. It was a nice, quiet little lunch, followed by a game of frisbee. CC used to be really competitive, so she threw it really hard. She threw it so hard, it almost knocked my bow off. Anyways, we went to go find it, and ended up wandering into the nearby Everfree Forest. We were both really scared, but since we were together, we were sure nothing would hurt us... until we ended up getting separated. I was petrified with fear, but I heard this little buzzing noise. My fear was replaced with curiosity, and I followed the noise until I found a little group of dragonflies. I was so fascinated by these little buzzing wonders that I forgot that I was even lost in the first place. I followed the little majestic beings for what seemed like an hour until I found myself chasing them out of the forest. I would've kept following them, if CC hadn't tackled me into a giant hug. I didn't even notice that I now had three little dragonflies marked on my flank. Once Cloudchaser had pointed it out, I was doubly happy. From that day on, I dedicated myself to learning as much as I could about all kinds of bugs, but dragonflies are still the coolest.
Well, after that came the school years, and it didn't exactly go over well for the "filly who played with bugs." The other fillies and colts called me mean names, most of which involved bugs in one form or another, and let's just say I had a hard time putting up with it. Well, once again, CC ended up helping me out a lot. Mostly by beating the living snot out of the colts, and scaring the living hay out of the fillies by beating the living hay out of the colts. You could say that all my life, CC was my guardian. Oh. Let's not forget the guardian of my virginity, apparently... ugh.
