Chapter 1: Ponyville

===================================

The sun shone bright over Ponyville as the town slowly woke up. Shops were opened, fillies were sent to school, and ponies from all over the large population filled the streets. The interesting thing about this particular day, was that more ponies from all corners of Equestria were coming in to witness an event that was the first of it's kind: The Solar Eclipse Extravaganza.

After the Royal Sisters, Celestia and Luna, were finally reunited after Luna's banishment, they planned a very rare event to occur once every twenty years or so on the same day that Nightmare Moon was defeated by the Users of the Elements, to represent the everlasting bond between them. This would be when the moon passes in front of the sun for a brief moment in time.

All across Ponyville, the preparations had been made. Local bakers such as the Cake family or Chocolate Ganache took care of the catering. Musical talents of Sweetie Bell, Brio Strings, Shades, and a number of others would perform. And of course, Ponyville's top party pony, Pinkie Pie, would be hosting the event live on television, a new device that allowed ponies to watch shows and live events from the comfort of their homes.

As all the final preparations were made, a door opened at a certain boutique near the town's square, and out walked a majestic lavender dragonpony mare with blue eyes purple scales on her underbelly and front claws, and a mane of the same color with a shock of green added in.  On her flank was the image of a pink gemstone surrounded by sparkles representing her magic ability. On her way out the door, she turned back to an older white unicorn, focusing on a mannequin she was designing a dress on.

"Okay, Mom. I'm heading out to meet my friends for the eclipse!" Amethyst  called.

"Alright, have fun, my widdle Amy-Wamy!" Rarity answered, still referring to her in the same nickname she had when she was young.  Her daughter rolled her eyes, only mildly annoyed with being called 'Amy Wamy' nowadays, as she closed the door behind her and headed out towards the market.

She had seen Ponyville's marketplace busy before, but due to the festivities, it looked like rush hour in Manehattan. Buyers were piling up by the dozens in front of booths selling items such as moonstone necklaces harvested by Luna herself, or just simple carnival foods. Even regular booths such as Winery's grape farm booth was seeing more customers than Amethyst had seen in a while. There was only one thing odd she had noticed: the only booth that wasn't seeing any business was the one from Sweet Apple Acres. At it were two mares, one with an orange coat, light green hair and eyes, and a dark red apple for a cutie mark, Rome Beauty. The other was her mother, Applejack, whose only difference from her daughter was her straw colored mane and usual ten-gallon hat.

"Howdy there, Amy." Applejack greeted the dragonpony, noticing her first.

"Hi, Mrs. Applejack, RB." Amethyst replied. "Where's all your customers?"

"We ran outta stock early." RB answered in her usual New Trotter's accent. "Uncle Mac went back to da farm ta get more."

"Yeah, basically, that whole crowd over there..." Applejack pointed out the swarm of ponies at the other booths. "...are just browsin' til we get us s'more apples."

"So I guess that means you'll be busy for now?" Amethyst asked the younger Apple, her smile slowly fading.

"I guess. I'm sorry Amy. I know I promised ya we'd hang out today." Rome Beauty said sadly.

"Relax, Sugarcube. You can go hang with yer friends." Applejack reassured her.

"Ya mean it, Ma?" RB turned to her mother with a hopeful look on her face.

"Sure. Yer uncle and Ah can handle it when he gets back. Plus, y'all've been workin mighty hard since yer aunt got too big ta be applebuckin'." AJ explained. "Ya deserve some time to relax."

"Great! Thanks Ma!" RB said as she hugged her before trotting off with Amethyst.

Just as they ran off, Big Mac returned with a cart full of fresh apples and pastries.

"Got all the merchandise, Big bro?" Applejack asked.

Before he could utter an "Eeyup", the crowd suddenly surged onto their booth, everypony suddenly shouting their orders at once.

"Maybe Ah lied ta RB when Ah said we could handle this." AJ said aloud.

"Eeyup." her brother said in agreement.

================================

"By the way, I've been meaning to ask, how's your Aunt Applebloom doing?" Amethyst asked Rome Beauty as they left the market.

"Fine. It's starting to look like she and Uncle Snails are gonna have that foal between now and the end of da week." Rome answered. "By the way, who're we pickin' up next?"

"Might as well be Surprise. Sugarcube Corner's right down the stre.."Amethyst started before bumping into an orange unicorn with a paintbrush for a cutie mark.

"Oh, sorry, Crystal. Wasn't watching where I was going." Amethyst apologized.

"It's no trouble, Amy. I'm just waiting in line for Sugarcube Corner." the unicorn answered.

"But dats across town..." Rome Beauty pointed out.

"I know." Crystal groaned, pointing out the extremely long line in front of her. "I haven't seen a line this bad since Lyra started selling those plushies a few years back." she continued.

"Ya mean those pouches where the pocket is in her..." RB started before Amy used her magic to 'zipper' her mouth shut.

"Anyways, we should get going. Nice talking to you!" she said before dragging her friend along with her.

At the front of the line, Cup Cake and Pumpkin Cake were busy taking orders as Carrot Cake, Pound Cake, and Pound's apprentice, Bran Muffin, cranked out trays of muffins, cookies, cupcakes and more baked goods to deal with the multiple orders coming in. Amy and RB walked around the line to the front, catching the attention of the ginger maned unicorn mare running the register.

"Hi, girls. I'm guessing you're hear for Surprise?" Pumpkin asked, while making change for a customer at the same time.

"Yeah, is she around?" Rome Beauty asked.

"I'm not sure." Pumpkin replied before turning to her twin who had just dropped off a batch of Danishes. "Have you seen Surprise around, Pound?"

"No. I sent her to pick up another sack of flour from the storeroom five minutes ago, and haven't seen..."

Before he couldfinish somepony yelled "SURPRISE!" very loudly, and a cloud of flour suddenly coated Pound Cake in white. Hovering above him was a white Pegasus with a curly yellow mane, purple eyes and a cutie mark of three balloons, and she was laughing her flank off while Pound sat there with an unamused look and a sack of flour poured all over him.

"There's the flour you wanted, Pound!" Surprise said through her laughter.

"Next time, could you bring one that ISN'T opened?" Pound snapped.

"Ah, lighten up, bro. That was funny!" Pumpkin giggled as she used a spell to clean him up.

"By the way, you're friends are here to go play with you." Pumpkin said, gesturing to Amethyst and Rome Beauty.

"Oh! Hi girls!" Surprise smiled as she hopped over the counter. "You ready to go?"

"I was just about to ask the same thing, Surprise." Amethyst answered.

"Okie Dokie Lokie! Let's go!" Surprise cheered as she cartwheeled towards the door and backflipped over a colt waiting in line, landing outside the bakery as her two friends followed.

===================================

"Do ya think she's even home?" Rome Beauty wondered aloud.

"I'm not sure..." Amethyst answered.

After knocking on the door to the town's library several times, the three fillies were contemplating if Moonlight was home or not.

"Silly fillies! She probably just can't hear us. That means we should knock louder!" Surprise suggested.

"I'm not sure that's a..."

Before Amethyst could finish, Surprise had already set her plan into motion by banging on the door with both front hooves and shouting at the top of her lungs, "MOONLIGHT? ARE YOU HOME OR NOT?"

Suddenly, the door was thrown open as a dark lavender unicorn, with bright pink eyes and a jet black mane that hung over her left eye, shoved her hoof in Surprise's mouth.

"Could you be any LOUDER, Surprise??" Moonlight Shadow snapped in a hushed whisper.

"OF COURSE!!!!!" Surprise yelled into a bullhorn she seemed to pull out of thin air before Moonlight snatched it away from her.

"Quiet! My dad just put my new sister down for a nap." Moonlight explained before her dad, Ponet, came to the door.

"It's alright, girls. None of that woke Galactica." he assured his daughter and her friends.

"Even after all that yellin'?" RB asked.

"Honestly, I doubt the end of Equestria as we know it could wake her up." Ponet chuckled.

"Well, I guess this means I'm heading out, Dad." Moonlight sighed as she stepped outside.

"Okay then. Have a fun time." he said in farewell as the group of what was now four young mares walked off. He quietly closed the door behind him and headed towards the kitchen in the back. As he did, a loose floorboard he stepped on squeaked, which set off a loud wailing of a newborn filly upstairs.

"For the love of...It took me twenty minutes to put her to sleep!"

===================================

"So I guess this means Golden and Sunbeam are getting picked up last?" Moonlight asked.

"Seems that way." Amethyst answered as the group entered Ponyville Arcade, which was packed with colts and fillies at arcade games. They walked up to the ticket counter, where a sky blue unicorn about their age just finished helping a colt redeem the tickets he won at the various video games in the arcade.

"Can I help you with something girls?" the unicorn asked, her light brown eyes fixated on the group.

"No thanks, Eight Bit. Just looking for Sunbeam." Amethyst said as they walked past her towards their friend's usual spot: glued to her favorite arcade game, where she was currently kicking the high score's flank on Sweet Foal o Mine on Expert level. Headbanging so that her dulled-out rainbow mane shook from side to side as she beat, she cheered as the song ended and the screen displayed her score as the current highest among all her other high scores for the selection.

"Woohoo! Beat my high score again!" Sunbeam said as she sommersaulted in the air in victory.

"Way to go, Sunnie!" Surprise cheered as she flew up and hugged her yellow coated friend who was now surprised to see four of her best friends behind her as she and Surprise touched down.

"Oh, hey guys!" Sunbeam said, greeting the other four.

"I take it you're all set to hang out with us?" Amethyst asked.

"Actually, just gotta take care of something real quick. Be right back." she said quickly as she sped out of the arcade, almost smacking into a yellow pegasi with a blue mane that was entering.

"Watch it!" Alma called after Sunbeam, who was not climbing higher into the sky, and in eight seconds flat, cleared the sky around Ponyville of clouds in record time before touching down in front of Alma, who was now staring at the cloudless sky with an amazed look on her face.

"Heh heh, you should see the look on your face." Sunbeam chuckled before heading off to Sweet Apple Acres with her friends.

===================================

Not much of Sweet Apple Acres had changed over the years. The only forseeable differences being the extra cottage built near the northern field that stood since Fluttershy and Big Macintosh had gotten engaged years ago. Another was the amount of dogs racing around the farm, ever since Applejack's first dog, Winona, had her first litter, Sweet Apple Acres also bread puppies for ponies to keep as pets. Outside the farmhouse, a brown earth pony colt with a white stripe on his nose and an apple cutie mark on his flank was dropping off a large cart of freshly harvested apples from the south field. Rome Beauty trotted up to him.

"Hey Kendall! Ya seen my cousin around here?" she asked.

"I think she's over in the south fields last time I checked." he answered.

Soon enough, the gang found themselves searching all over the southern orchard in an attempt to find their final friend.

"Did anypony find her yet?" Sunbeam asked as a couple of ponies gathered in a group in a clearing.

"Nothing on the end I searched." Moonlight answered in an emotionless tone.

"Same here." Rome Beauty reported.

"Nope." Surprise  said, popping out of a knot in a large tree's trunk.

"Wait a minute, there she is!" Amethyst pointed out behind the tree Surprise came out of. Sure enough, a butter colored female earth pony with a brown mane with streaks of light pink in it and an apple tree shaped cutie mark was kneeling over at a stream, dipping a beat-up watering can into the water until it filled, before proceeding to water some wildflowers that sprang up along the bank.

"There you go little ones." she cooed to the flowers before emptying the rest of the water back into the stream, and turning back towards the orchard...

...before coming snout to snout with Surprise.

"HIYA, GOLDIE!" Surprise exclaimed, sending her panicked friend flying into the air, hanging by her front hooves on a branch somewhat high up.

"Oh! Surprise! You startled me." Golden said through short breaths as she regained her composure. "Could somepony help me down? That is, if you don't mind..."

Golden definitely took after her mother, they all thought as Amethyst levitated her down to ground level.

"So, with that settled, we should head back to town. Sounds like the entertainment's wrapping up." Sunbeam assumed as she could hear Shades and Brio's first duet together in years ended in a round of applause before Pinkie's voice came over the loudspeaker.

"Alrighty, everypony! That does it for musical entertainment for now! The real show starts in twenty minutes so don't go anywhere! Unless you need to use the bathroom, or get a refill of carrot juice or another chimicherrychanga..." the bubbly earth pony Surprise took after babbled away about cherry flavored Mexicoltian food for around a minute before another voice took the mic, this one sounding much more authoritative.

"Ahem. Thank you, Pinkie, for your detailed discussion on how you almost named your daughter, "Cumquot." Twilight said sarcasticly.

"I WAS GONNA BE NAMED CUMQUOT??? Why didn't my mom keep that name?" Surprise whined, her mane going completely flat as she looked down, disappointed. "That would've been a great name..."

"Surprise, the name you have now is good enough as it is." Amethyst assured her. Suddenly, a joyful look was replastered on her face as her mane bounced back into its usual poofy state.

"Eh, you're probably right Amy." Surprise agreed.

"Sshhhh. I wanna hear what Moonlight's mom has to say." Rome said, holding a hoof up.

"Who cares?" Moonlight sighed, before being shushed.

"As your mayor for eighteen years, I have seen countless wonders and miracles in this town, but today, one like no other will occur just moments from now! May I present my mentor and good friend, Princesses Celestia and Luna!"

The crowd in Ponyville erupted in cheers as the two regal Alicorn sisters, flanked by Pegasus guards, lead by their nephew, Eos, down from Canterlot Castle and straight to the platform that stood in front of the town hall.

===================================

Meanwhile, in the depths of Tartarus, a great evil being watched from a viewing screen as the Alicorns landed and greeted the town's mayor. It narrowed its eyes and watched as the event prepared to unfold.

"Very soon, my bretherin, the time that Equestria faced my WRATH will begin."
