The Ascent

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Your legs begin to ache from climbing so many stairs. You figure that you must be at least half way. You reach a window and your legs are burning. You sit down on one of the steps next to the window with an audible 'flomp.' You lay back against the stairs and gaze out the window. You do not like what you see. You let out a loud groan of impatience and significant disappointment. You've only climbed 1/4 of the way up to Celestia's chambers.

"This really wrinkles my sprinkles." You mutter to your self. You rant to yourself in your head as you struggle to get half way up the stairs. Your thoughts turn to Celestia.

"This had better be important. I swear if its for some stupid reason I'll jump from her balcony!" You proclaim shaking your fist in the air.

You soon realize the stupidity of your threat. Your legs were too tired to do anything and Princess Celestia could use her magic to stop you from jumping. She would probably lecture you why suicide was bad. It would only encourage it even more.

You come across another window and your legs feel like they've been injected with acid. You take a seat on the steps again and gaze outside. You've made considerable progress. You can see nearly all of Canterlot and the rest of Equestria just over the horizon. The moon hasn't moved a lot since you last saw it.You sit on the stairs for a few minutes and stare outside, giving your worn out legs some time to recover.

Your legs return to normal and you believe you can push out at least until you're 75 steps away from her room. Only one way to find out.

You begin to climb the stairs again, hopefully you won't have to take another break. You'd hate to keep Princess Celestia waiting. That familiar feeling of burnt out legs returns and you're fed up with it. You ignore your legs' pleads to sit down and rest and continue upwards.

The top of the spire is in your sights. A sense of accomplishment, gratitude wash over you but, your celebrations are short lived. You legs cannot take any more and crumble beneath you. You make an annoyed growl and lift the front of your body up with your arms, into a cobra like position. One arm forward, then down, pull as hard as you can.

One step down, lots more to go...

"Oh bugger."
