Chapter Nine “Ladylike Tendencies”
Spitfire was the renowned captain of the Wonderbolts, a practical drill sergeant with a zero-tolerance persona. On the grounds of the Academy, nopony was foolish enough to cross her, but anywhere else, the pegasus was the complete opposite, with a nonchalant demeanor and light sense of humor. Spitfire was truly a professional, knowing how to keep her job and personal life fairly distant from each other. However, something seemed to have changed recently.
Captain Spitfire was not quite herself at the Academy. Several of her cohorts pondered if it had anything to do with the mare’s recent joining with Prince Peter Pony Parker’s herd. That alone raised questions. Spitfire was always disinterested in relationships outside of platonic range, but after the race in Manehattan she started displaying an odd interest for Spider-Mane, usually mentioning him during conversations. Also, from what spectators gathered from various members of the Parker herd, it was actually Spitfire who suggested forming the throng in the first place to Princess Twilight Sparkle. It was celebrity gossip at its finest. Everypony wanted to guess and assume, but the only ones who knew the truth behind Spitfire’s fascination and interest in Prince Parker was Spitfire herself (and a few members of Parker’s herd). Sadly, she wasn’t telling anypony anything. Atall. It made those close to the pegasus ask what was it about Prince Parker that peaked her interests, but she never answered, simply always replying with cryptic enigmas. This was merely speculation, shared between a few ponies in the Academy and select members of the Wonderbolts. They knew better than to confront the captain about the matter, lest everypony felt like performing suicide flights throughout the obstacle course. Through hushed whispers they shared their tales, recollecting the signs of Spitfire’s change in behavior. Three incidents stood out, one taking place a number of weeks ago.The captain observed everypony during their speed trials as per usual, but she seemed flushed, her face a fair shade of crimson despite her phlegmatic expression. On occasion after barking an order, Spitfire would pause to brush strands of her mane behind her ear. Ironically, Spider-Mane had come to participate in the trials as well, taking moments to talk with the pegasus. Spitfire’s fiery gaze almost never diverted from the stallion. Bulk Biceps made the horrible mistake of questioning the captain on her imperturbable demeanor, and he paid for it with a thorough tongue lashing and three-hundred push-ups.Second, Spitfire had been seen at the spa a bit more than usual. It was no secret that the Wonderbolts had their own personal masseuse and spa treatments, but Spitfire’s appointments and requests were growing in quality and quantity. Usually, the mare only asked for massages before venturing into the spa. As of late, she had upped the ante, requesting hooficures and facial treatments. Spitfire even went so far to go to the salon, having her mane done for the first time in years. She arrived at the Academy, wearing her usual jacket, but her hooves were practically glowing in the morning sun, their brightness matched only by her slick mane. When Prince Parker arrived at the Academy that day, he openly complimented the captain of the Wonderbolts, and the mare squealed jubilantly, undoubtedly earning stares from her peers. Everypony within range seemed to have developed short term amnesia after Spitfire shot them a venomous glare. A mare in uniform was not somepony to trifle with, and the good captain resembled death to those who dared to laugh at her expense. However, the latest incident was taking place this very moment. Most of the ponies proceeded to fly through the obstacle course, keeping one eye on the perilous path ahead and the other fixed on Spitfire and Prince Parker. They seemed to have been engaged in a conversation and exchanged pleasantries, evident by their shared smiles. It was alien. Captain Spitfire never smiled while present at the Academy, keeping a steely gaze and stoic frown, but right at the moment she was grinning, holding a toothy smile. Suddenly, Princess Luna appeared in a flash of light behind the pair. It was swift, but Prince Parker closed the distance and planted a kiss over Spitfire’s forehead before vanishing with the co-ruler of Equestria. The pegasus retrieved her signature violet shades and placed them over her eyes, but they failed to hide her flushed features. However, before anypony could react, Spitfire turned sharply and howled, particularly at those staring in her direction. Everypony scattered, the trainees returning their full attention to the obstacle course while nearby Wonderbolts glanced away out of fear. The truth was finally out. Spitfire may have been a drill-sergeant, but she was still a lady at heart.Spitfire glared at the stallion next to her position. “Eyes forward, Soarin!”Soarin’ cringed, snapping his head forward. He only wished she wouldn’t be so defensive about it.
