Chapter Ten “Cooking with Disaster”
“This was a horrible idea,” Trixie murmured as she watched the substance bubbling in the pot.
It was merely onion soup, something even fillies could cook, but the unicorn was failing miserably, evident by the wooden spoon stuck within the impossibly thick substance. Trixie lacked the experience. She was a mare who ate out usually, but ever since her Ursa Major ruse was exposed, the unicorn only recently began to practice. It was for the sake of her coltfriend, Peter. She only wanted to do something nice for him. Trixie paused, her face flushing to a shade of pink. Okay, perhaps not. Sadly, nearly every member of the herd was competent in the kitchen.Even the brute, Rainbow Dash, was a decent cook. Surprisingly, the klutz of the group, Derpy, was the best, but this was probably due to the fact that she cooked for her daughter, Dinky, all of the time before joining the herd. It was a domestic skill, and Derpy was a natural as a mother. Peter always praised the pegasus for her cooking, smothering the blonde with kisses as a reward. Trixie wanted to see if she had what it took to cook like a marefriend or better yet a wife. She blushed, shaking her head. Trixie stepped away from the stove, coughing. The fumes from her cooking were obviously disorienting her senses. She refused to be the worst at anything. Simple as that.Having enough, the unicorn aimed her horn at the pot and enveloped the spoon with her magic, straining for several minutes before the tool snapped into two pieces. Trixie blankly stared as the wooden implement melted into the soup, a new cloud of smoke rising from the substance. This was the price she paid for attempting to be creative. The others usually added extra ingredients to their cooking, giving their dishes a unique yet endearing taste. Trixie moaned. Perhaps Zecora’s potions weren’t the ideal choices for added ingredients. The kitchen door swung open, and Derpy stumbled inside, her crossed eyes wide with amazement. “Trixie! Do you need-” she paused, laughing nervously once Trixie’s dismayed gaze fell in her direction. “-any help?”Trixie stared at the stew before opening the window, slinging the pot outside with all of her strength. The unicorn shrugged. “It’s just a few minor miscalculations. Surely, the next dish will be my greatest creation yet!”Derpy placed her hoof over her nose, blocking the scent plaguing the room. “Don’t worry about it. I wasn’t that great either when I first started cooking. I don’t mind cooking for the day.”Trixie arched a brow. “That will not be necessary, Derpy. I have things well under control.” The pair stood silently as remnants from the stew burned over the stove, blackening to a crisp in a small flame. Trixie’s ears lowered after a moment’s pause. “How were the muffins? Were they satisfactory?”Derpy’s complexion paled, her eyes falling to either side. “Actually-”Before the mailmare could continue, Rainbow Dash burst into the room and dragged her out of the room. “Derpy! You have to see this!”Trixie tilted her head to the side. After a few moments, her brow furrowed. A collection of voices could be heard from behind the door.Rarity sobbed, her cries growing in volume. “My precious tooth! It’s broken!”Dash chuckled. “Yeah! I dropped mine and it went straight through the floor!”“Such impressive density! These are as durable as Peter’s Spider-Mane webbing! I simply must study this!” Twilight boasted, her voice giddy. The voices eventually lowered into hushed whispers, and Derpy entered the room, brushing her hoof over the other awkwardly. “Trixie… what did you put in the muffin mix?”Trixie sighed and removed her apron, crossing the room to thrust it at the pegasus. “Fine. You can cook,” she huffed, leaving the room with a glower.Derpy watched the unicorn with a wide-eyed gaze, shifting it to the side once Zecora entered the room.“Has somepony been rummaging through my supplies again?”
