Chapters Ponyville, the year 207, A.D.* Over 200 years have passed since the Six Wielders defeated the Darkness. The world is grey and dim; the sun provides little warmth during these dark times. Ponies go about their daily lives, plying their skills, and having what fun they can in their confined lives. None dare go outside the barrier, for many fear that doing so will result in death, be it by the dead lands or the creatures roaming them.
Morning rises as a young colt enters his tree-home, hoping to find some solace in the many books that litter the place. The place was abandoned years ago for long-forgotten reasons, so it makes a perfect place to find solace and knowledge. Dusk Fades floats a book to himself, reading from it as his horn glows a purple color, indicating he’s utilizing his magic. It was thanks to these books that Dusk was able to begin to understand what his horn did, and how to control the potential inside him.
Magic is a forgotten art, often shunned by Earth Ponies. Their hardy lifestyle and builds allowed them to persevere in these trying times, where Unicorns and Pegasi were unable to survive well. Any Unicorns that remain live in the Capitol, trained to keep the city safe, should the barriers fail. Being the only Unicorn in Ponyville makes Dusk a rarity, misunderstood, and feared.
He was orphaned as a child, left on the doorstep of the abandoned building. Ever since, he has lived here, reading, learning, and practicing. Having no money, no job, and no friends, he was forced to resort to petty thievery just to survive. Discovering magic has made life much easier, but he yearns for a better life, like the one found in his books.
“Hmm, this is interesting,” Dusk muttered aloud. Seeing as no one else lived here, it didn’t matter. He continued, “Apparently, at one time there were more ponies like me around. Ponies actually liked them, and were friends with them. This ‘Star Swirl the Bearded’ was once revered for his magical accomplishments, and there’s even a sector of the Royal Library dedicated to him!” Using his magic, he brought another book to himself, switching over to reading it. “And here is some of the lore of this land…Oh wow!” He exclaimed as he pored over the details of this tome. “So, there are stained glass windows in the Royal Palace that visually tell some of these legends. That’s so cool!”
His dark red eyes scanned furiously over the pages, soaking in every detail. Dusk’s concentration was so focused that he failed to notice the plank fall from a nearby wall. His Dark Purple coat shivered a little as a breeze flowed through the window he broke to get into this place. His lamp flickered, finally getting him to notice that the covering had failed, again.
“Argh! Man, I wish I could just get a new window.” Taking a breath, and focusing, Dusk moved the piece of wood back up and onto the window, magically sealing the hole. With a quick look around the tree, Dusk nodded, and returned to his reading. Books were strewn everywhere from his constant reading, but at least the place was livable. With time and clever repairing, it almost felt like a home. Power was restored with Dusk’s newfound magical capabilities, but only on the inside.
Checking his makeshift watch, Dusk noticed it was near dawn; time for bed. No need to arouse suspicion in the neighbors. “Eh, I think I have enough time to finish this book. I only have a few pages left.”
That was all about a month ago, ever since that day he decided to stay up later than he should have. Since then, Dusk has been thrust into a quest to save Equestria. Alongside him are 5 other ponies: Foren Pix, Barry, Storm Chaser, Soren Wings, and Alura. Feron and Barry are Earth Ponies, while Storm and Soren are Pegasi. Alura is a unicorn like Dusk. How this rag-tag group of ponies managed to even get out of town, let alone travel together, is a tale in and of itself.
It all started with that book Dusk was too interested in to notice how much time had passed.

Morning arrives in Ponyville, the same as every other day. One of the ruling Alicorns uses their magic to lift the sun, while the other finishes lowering the moon. Ponies everywhere stir to life, putting on their clothes, and starting their dull, daily routines. A certain young female pony starts her day by waking up with a smile, and saying hello to the sun. Donning her ceremonial pink robe, the blue mare sets out from her house, ready to make as many friends as she can. Her slightly curly gray mane and tail fluttering in the early morning breeze, Feron trots to town square, a slightly forced smile on her face.
“This time, I’ll succeed for sure! I’ll make a friend…I have a feeling I will.” She reassured herself, smiling and saying hello to everypony she passed. Many ponies recognized the bright pink robe she wore, and simply looked away, whispering to each other, wondering how that poor pony could live with herself, having to wear that bright, cheery, garish robe.
“Meh….” Feron sighed, as she continued her daily route around town, being as friendly as she could. “I know it’s my duty to make friends with everyone in town, and to know their names, but this sure is hard…I don’t know how you did it Grandma…But I have to try, for you.” She nodded to herself, and kept going on about her way. Sure, she knew all the ponies in town by where they lived, what they did, and how they looked, but none were willing to give their names, let alone be friends. It seemed hopeless. That’s when she noticed that a certain building, one that had been vacant for as long as she could remember, was lit up on the inside.
Dusk jolted out of his place on the couch, dropping all the various books he was suspending, at the very unfamiliar sound emanating from the entrance to his tree. Somepony was knocking on the door. This had never happened before, so Dusk was scared witless. Gathering himself, he checked his watch again, finally noticing just how early in the morning it was.
“Crap!” He said under his breath. “I stayed up too late, trying to finish that book….Gah!” Feeling panic about to set in, Dusk took a deep breath, and gathered his thoughts. “It’s ok, I can get through this. I’ll just put on that hat I found so whoever it is doesn’t realize I’m a unicorn, answer the door, and then politely ask them to leave. Yeah, that’s it.” With a quick glance at the hat rack, the Black fedora floated quickly to Dusk, and gently alighted on his head, covering his horn nicely. Gathering his courage, he slid off the old couch, and trotted over to the door.
The knocking continued all the way up until Dusk carefully opened the door. He had to squint to see through the blinding light. All he could really make out was a pony in what appeared to be a robe. “Hello?” He asked, unsure of how to proceed.
“Hello! My name is Feron Pix. I’m a disciple of Pinkamena.” The mare replied, curious as to whom this strange new pony was. She continued, not near as much excitement in her voice, as if reading from a script, “I’m here to be your friend! And you are?”
“Uh, a sleep deprived guy. I’m sorry, but could you please leave? I was hoping to get some sleep in, today.” Dusk replied, hoping to get this over with as soon as possible. At his words, a look of panic crept upon the mare’s face.
“B-but wait! I need to know your name! It’s part of the code! And I need to make a friend! I’ve never seen you before! Please! You have to at least tell me your name.” Feron blurted out, holding the door where it was before Dusk could close it.
“Your…code? I’m sorry, but I’ve been up too late as it is. I really need my sleep. Besides…you wouldn’t want to be friends with me anyway.” He replied, stepping back, and turning around, his flank revealed.
“Wait! Please! You don’t know that! I really need to know your name! I’m sure we could be great friends! I need to, if I’m ever going to be a priestess of Pinkamena! Just give me a chance, please.” Her pleading tone and sad, hazel eyes seemed to get to Dusk. With a sigh, he turned back around.
“Dusk. My name is Dusk Fades.” He grimaced, hoping this would end soon.
“Really? You actually told me your name?! This is great! Finally!” Feron seemed very excited all of a sudden, taking Dusk by surprise. “You’re the first pony I’ve met who’s been willing to tell me his name! This is huge! I’m finally on my way!” She continued, about ready to explode. The genuine look of happiness on her face brought a bit of a smile to Dusk’s face as well.
“Well, it’s nice to see you on your way, but I really need my sleep now, so I’ll be going to my bed, ok? Perhaps I’ll see you another day or something.” Dusk yawned, turning back to face the bottom floor of his home.
“Oh, wait! We’re friends now!” Feron had finally settled down, but was still smiling. “That means we have to throw a party!”
“A party?” Dusk grimaced, dreading that this wasn’t going to end anytime soon.
“Yep! A party. Says so in the Code. Every time you make a new friend, you have to throw them a party. I’m supposed to invite all my other friends to the party, but since you’re my first one, I guess we’ll just start it right now!”
“I…I guess so. But...where? And how?” Dusk replied, still confused as to what a party actually was.
“Hmm….I’ve never gotten this far before…Perhaps we can have a drink at the local cider bar? Yeah!” Feron seemed to be getting worked up and excited again, trying to plan this thing out. “I know a guy there, not really a friend, but he knows how to make a mean cider! I just call him Barkeep since he refuses to tell me his name.” She continued as, without Dusk even noticing until now, the two walked down the street toward the local bar.
“Uh, how did you do that?” Dusk asked, interrupting Feron’s stream of words.
“Do what?” She replied, a little confused.
“You started talking to me, and suddenly I found myself walking down the street in broad daylight. How did you do that?” He expanded, still confused as to how he got here.
“ I dunno,” Feron replied with a shrug, “It just happens, I guess.” The two continued, as other ponies stared on, wondering what those 2 could possibly have to talk about.
Dusk and Feron trotted toward downtown Ponyville. Passerby looked rather shocked to see the two of them talking, and avoided them as best they could. This did not go unnoticed by Dusk or Feron, but the latter simply assumed it was because nopony had seen Dusk until now. Dusk wasn’t so sure about that; however, he kept that thought to himself.
Passing a nearby food stand, Dusk quietly caused an apple to start rolling down the street toward their destination. When he was sure Feron was distracted, and that nopony else was looking, he slipped the apple under his hat for later, as a midday snack. This little magical stunt, though, did not go completely unnoticed. A lone, gray pegasus saw, and was curious enough to follow, despite his own opinions on talking to people.
“Ah! We’re here, ‘The Sweet Apple Cider Bar.’” Feron began one of her infinitely long conversations. “This is one of favorite place to eat, and catch a mug of cider after a hard day of friend making. There are always new faces to see, and old faces to see in a new light. You never know who you’re going to see in here!”
Dusk sighed inwardly, and spoke up, hoping to catch her attention. “Uh, Feron, can I say something?” He asked, hoping not to offend her. Wait…hoping to not offend her? That’s new. I suppose it comes with having a friend. Anyway, back to what I was saying.
“Hmm? Oh of course silly! We’re friends now, so of course you can!” She giggled, and looked back over at Dusk.
“Well….Why do you wear that bright pink robe thing?” he asked, cringing a little. “I hate to say it, but I think it scares ponies away with how bright and cheery it is, uh, no offense.” He expanded, noting how people are staying away from them.
“Huh? Oh, this old thing? It was a gift from my grandmother!” Feron replied in a somber yet still cheery tone. After a few seconds lost in memories, she continued. “It was her priestess robe, back when the Pinkamena was still worshiped. It’s a shame no one practices it anymore. The world could use a little more laughter and fun, especially in these dark days…”
After a few more moments of reflection, Feron returned to her usual cheery self. “Anyway,” she replied, “Why do you ask?”
Dusk was a little unprepared for that, but sighed, and finally said what had been on his mind. “Well, one reason I think people don’t, uh, want to tell you their name is because of that robe. I think it scares people off.” He seemed genuinely afraid of how she’d react. “Perhaps if you took it off, just for the party, then perhaps people would be more willing to talk to ya.” Dusk was practically flinching at this point, dreading her response.
“OK!” Was her only reply. With a smile, and a giggle, she slipped off the robe, and stored it in her saddle bag.
Dusk was stunned, speechless at how easy that was. “Umm, alright then.”
“Mhmm!” She nodded, and giggled more. “To the cider!” She yelled, nearly running inside.
“Hey, wait for me!” Dusk yelled, following her lead. The inside of the bar was rather quiet and somber. Trotting directly up to the counter, the pair, smiling, waved for the barkeep to come over.
“Well, if it isn’t Feron Pix, Disciple of Pinka-what’s-her-face.” Barkeep snickered a little, before continuing on. “Here to try and make friends with people again?” He brushed his semi-long brown main out of his blue eyes. His light brown coat glistened a little from all the cider.
“Nope, not today, Barkeep! Just here to drink cider, and celebrate!” she replied, a huge grin plastered onto her face. This intrigued the cider-man, grabbing a mug for the giddy mare.
As he poured the cider from the tap, he couldn’t help but ask, “And what kind of celebration could cause you to take off your fancy robe?” He slid the mug down toward Feron, awaiting her response with some amount of anticipation.
“Well, I made a new friend today!” She beamed, stepping back to show Dusk to Barkeep. “This is Dusk! He’s new in town!” Feron threw a hoof around Dusk’s neck, jokingly. Dusk grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Umm, hi.” He nodded to Barkeep. “Mind if I get a mug too? This is a party after all.”
“Oh, of course! So long as you’re paying, that is.” Barkeep nodded, grabbing the next mug in line.
“Heh, don’t worry about that, Barkeep! Put it on my tab. In fact, I’m buying everyone in the room a round!” Feron exclaimed happily. Everyone in the room perked up at the sound of free drinks. Seeing as everyone knew her name, there were thanks all around to the tune of, “Wow! Thanks Feron!”
Several hours, and many drinks later, Dusk and Feron were the last to stagger from the bar, a new friend in tow. “Hey Barkeep, what is your real name anyway?” Feron asked, truly curious. The cider had made her a little braver than normal.
“Well, I suppose after all that, I owe you my first name, at least. Call me Barry." He nodded with a hint of a smile. "Now good night you two. Get to your homes safely.” He added, turning back to the bar for closing and sleep.
“Will do, Barry!” Feron replied, more bubbly than ever. “I’d say that party covers both him and you, Dusk. Wouldn’t you say?”
“Agreed. Tomorrow is a new day, so let’s sleep the night off, my friend.” Dusk smiled, happy with his newfound friend. With that, they parted ways for the night.
The shy, grey pegasus had watched from the corner as the two friends shared their drink and their dreams, cider flowing like a waterfall. They seem to be doing well for themselves. I can’t say the same for myself, but that’s ok. I just hope things turn out ok for all of us.
"Obligatory Author Self-Insertion"
Dawn of the second day. Dusk yawned, as he sat up to stretch his hooves and legs. His body was not used to waking up at dawn instead of dusk, so it was rather hard for him to actually get himself out of bed and dressed. Cleaning himself up, alongside a few books he had picked up before finally resting, Dusk opened a curtain, letting the shallow warmth of the risen sun flow in. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.
Teleporting a very certain, musty tome to himself, Dusk began his daily reading on the lore of this land. This novel sounded particularly exciting, what with ancient power and dreadful foes being defeated by six chosen mares. It almost seemed real….
“Knock-knock!” a few thuds rocked the ancient door, dragging Dusk’s attention back to the present.
“Hold on, I’ll be there in a second!” He yelled at the door, rushing to gather his fedora and saddle bag, setting the tome inside for later study. Nomming on his daily stolen apple, Dusk answered the door with a casual, “Hello!” He was glad, at least, to see it wasn’t some random stranger. Then again, nopony really knows I live here yet, aside from Feron. He thought to himself as the bright, cheery mare stepped inside his humble abode. He noticed she wasn’t wearing her bright pink robe today.
“Hi, Dusky!” She replied, smiling as always. Feron sat down on the floor, looking around the tree-house. “Wow! This place is nicer and bigger than I had imagined!” She hadn’t gotten a very good look inside when they first met yesterday. She then began wandering around, looking and touching everything she could find.
“Heh, I guess so…” Dusk replied sheepishly, new nickname aside. “Anyway,” He continued, “what brings you over, Feron?” He looked over at the mare, a little surprised at just how into exploring his house she was.
“I was thinking that we should go out to the park, and have some fun! It is part of the code,” She confirmed to herself with a nod, finally returning to face Dusk. “You have to have fun with somepony every day, lest you sink into a deep pit of loneliness…” She trailed off at that last part, seemingly lost in memories. But, just as quickly as she was lost, Feron bounced back to her usual exuberant self, all smiles and happiness.
“Eh, if you say so.” He shrugged, opening the door to head out into town.
“Hey! Afterward, we can go see Barry for some apple cider!” Feron added, happy with the thought of seeing another friend.
Soren was getting rather tired of just watching the two ponies going about simple daily life tasks. There were bigger stakes here than somepony finding out Dusk was a unicorn, or Feron becoming a disciple of Pinkamena. Things needed to pick up soon, lest it all be too late. At this rate, he would have to take direct action. Action means talking to other ponies. God I hate talking to other ponies. With a deep sigh, Soren alighted off the ground, heading out over the town to find just the ponies he needs to get this whole shebang started.
Flying low at a slow pace over the town, Soren began looking below for potential ponies. Let’s see…No, he’s not it. Neither is she. Dammit! I may have to go and talk to the two of them in person. But that would mean getting involved in the big picture. I’m supposed to remain the hidden guide in all this! Gah! He mentally berated himself for being such a socially awkward "Hand of the Heavens," utterly incapable of doing his job correctly.
The Heavens chose Soren for a reason. What that reason may be, even he doesn’t know.
Yet.
Dusk and Feron ran through the park, laughing, falling, and generally having fun. Neither one seemed to notice the pegasus awkwardly watching them, a near nervous wreck from the looks of him. His grey eyes and coat, and blue curly mane were shaking slightly. With a deep breath, the stallion walked over to where the two were sitting, and managed stuttered, “H-hello.”
“Hmm?” Feron paused, looking in the general direction of the voice. “Oh, hello there!” she waved, and smiled. Soren looked scared rather scared, but cleared his throat and stepped closer.
“H-hi. My name is…Soren…Soren Wings…” He managed to utter, refusing to make total eye contact with either pony.
“Hi Sorey! I’m Feron Pix! But you can call me Feron.” She held out a hoof for him to shake, grinning the entire time. “Hey, do you wanna be friends? Ooo! We should throw a party for ya! I’ll go grab Barry and the cider!” She started rambling on about the party, but all it seemed to do is cause Soren frustration.
Clapping one hoof over Feron’s mouth, Dusk stepped forward, clearly recognizing that she was scaring him. “I’m sorry about my friend here; she can get a little excited about making new friends.” Dusk paused for a second to release Foren, giving her a quick glare to let her know not to talk so much. “Anyway, I’m Dusk Fades, it’s nice to meet you Soren.” Dusk nodded to the male, hoping not to spook him. “So, Soren, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself? It should help you feel a little better.”
With a sigh and a nod, Soren sat down across from the other two, and slowly began telling them of his life, except for the whole “Hand of the Heavens” thing. He told them of his lack of real flight training, where he lived, some of his fears, and dreams etc…
“Wow, that’s…so cool!” Feron exclaimed as the pegasus finished, still giddy from making yet another new friend. That makes 3 in 2 days! Feron and Dusk then took turns telling their own stories, minus certain details. The fact that all 3 of them lacked cutie marks did not go unnoticed by neither Soren nor Dusk. And yet, for once in his life, Soren was feeling relatively comfortable around these ponies.
There is something…Something about these 2 radiates hope…Yes, I can feel it… Soren thought to himself, a little proud that things had gone so well. A smile nearly cracked his face, as the 3 set out to play in the field, in what little area that resided within the safety of the barrier.
Another day had come and gone, but soon things would finally begin to pick up speed, just as Soren needed.
Dawn approached quickly, the sunlight beginning to wear its way down through the cracks. Dusk yawned and brought himself around, and off his bed. It had been a long day, and an even longer reading session, but completely worth it. That second book he had mysteriously found yesterday alongside the one he took with him held incredible knowledge. Everything from alicorn immortality, to present day religions, this book felt like a near infinite fountain of wisdom.
“Alicorns never truly die. Their souls are immortal, and can live on even when the body fails.” Dusk read to himself, picking up where he left off yesterday. “Is that all? It doesn’t say anything on what happens afterward. Does the soul just sit there, or what? Can it find, or generate a new body? Argh, this is so frustrating!” He ranted, a little stressed at the many vague paragraphs and unfinished articles. With a disgruntled sigh, and a deep breath, he forged on, not wanting to miss any important or interesting details.
“Hmm, now this sounds interesting. ‘The Six Paths of Friendship.’ The main religious factions of the last 200 years, these groups dedicated their lives to following the example set down by The Wielders… Generosity, Kindness, Honesty, Loyalty, Laughter, and Magic are the main pillars for each religion, respectively.” Dusk muttered, focusing intently. “Each has a temple dedicated to their patron Mare, and a High Sage said to be descended from the Mare in question. It is said that each temple held its respective Shard of Friendship, though the Shards themselves were utterly inert except in the presence of a descendant.” Dusk thought for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. All his other texts say that the Shards were lost to this world, or simply disappeared with Wielder’s passing.
Setting that in the back of his mind, Dusk read on. “The Patron Mares are: The Mare of Knowledge and the Arcane (Magic), The Mare of Truth and Justice (Honesty), The Mare of Nature and Preservation (Kindness), The Mare of Action and Allegiance (Loyalty), The Mare of Beauty and Charity (Generosity), and The Mare of Joy and Celebrations (Laughter).” The book then went on to describe each of the Patrons in greater detail, discussing their lives, personalities, and so on.
“Funny, this last one sounds a lot like Feron…”He strayed off in thought for a few moments, before quickly grabbed another book nearby. “There’s a passage in here somewhere about old religious rights and sacraments…Ah, here it is! ‘All disciples who wish to become a priest/priestess must make a pilgrimage to the Temple of the Mare in question, and…’”
He was about to continue when he noticed the time on one of the few working clocks he owned. “Crap, I’m supposed to meet everyone at the bar. I’ll finish these later; I bet Feron will love to hear about my discovery!” With a smile and quick bit of magic, Dusk was dressed, and out the door, headed downtown.
Soren sighed as he stood outside the door to the bar. He knew that they were all meeting here, but he still couldn’t help but feel a bit panicked. What if they don’t figure out what I need them to figure out? Wait…What if they do figure out that it was me who placed that book in Dusk’s bag, and start asking questions? Oh Heavens, I’m not sure if I can handle this! He swallowed, and was about to open the door and face the inevitable, when a shouting voice brought his attention around. The look on the face of Dusk removed any doubt from Soren’s mind. Oh thank god. He did understand and figure it out. That’s good. I just hope he doesn’t figure out where the book came from.
“Soren! Hey, Soren!” Dusk shouted, a bit breathless from running all the way through town to make it on time. He slowed his speed, coming to a stop beside the pegasus. “Phew, I made it on time. Good to see I’m not the only one running a bit behind.”
“Heh, yeah…” Soren replied, a little relieved by Dusk’s warm, friendly aura. “Shouldn’t, uh, shouldn’t we be heading inside? I think Feron and the other guy are already inside.”
“Of course,” the unicorn in disguise nodded, opening the door for Soren. “And his name is Barry; don’t worry, he’s a nice guy. Makes a mean cider if I do say so myself.” He continued, headed straight for the counter. Soren followed closely behind, hoping to not catch anypony’s attention.
Looking up from his conversation with Feron, Barry cracked another smile and grabbed another 2 mugs from under the bar. “Well if it isn’t my other favorite customer. It’s good to see ya again, Dusk!” the older stallion called, setting down the cider filled cup down on the bar across from the empty barstool next to Feron.
“It’s nice to see you too, Barry.” Dusk replied, setting himself up on his seat. We’ve got another friend here in tow, today. I’d like you to meet Soren Wings.” He continued, gesturing to the pegsus residing in his shadow.
“H-hi.” Soren muttered, carefully climbing up to the other vacant stool. He avoided eye contact, as usual, but Barry didn’t mind.
“Nice to meet’cha, Soren. You can call me Barry.” He nodded, and slid the third cider mug down, stopping right in front of the pegasus. “It’s rare to see one of the flyin’ folk down here on the ground these days, but perhaps I’ve just never seen ya in this part of town,” the barkeep gave his new acquaintance a quick look over, before continuing. “Anyway, I won’t pry too much, I respect a person’s right to privacy. All I ask is that you do the same for me.” With a shy, “Ok”, Soren relaxed slightly, and slowly drank from his cup.
“It’s good to see us all getting along!” Feron started, about to go on another of her endless conversations. Dusk interrupted her before she could get started, however.
“I hate to interrupt, Feron, but I found something I thought you guys might find interesting.” Dusk turned around, and pulled the rather large book out of his pack by hand, er mouth, and set it on the bar for the rest to see. “I stumbled upon this neat book yesterday, and the information inside is rather amazing. Just look at the cover!” He pointed out the intricate details, varying lines of depth and the images they seemed to make. All the while, Soren remained silent.
Returning to the information inside, Dusk continued, “I found a particularly interesting section on the Religions based around the wielders of the Shards of Friendship. Turns out, the Shards lie dormant in the old Temples where the Descendants of The Six Wielders would pass on the teachings-“
“I don’t mean to be rude,” Barry interjected, “but who the heck are these ‘Six Wielders’ and what are these ‘Friendship Pieces’ for?”
Dusk felt a bit thoughtless and grinned sheepishly. “I’m sorry about that. I forget that most everybody else has forgotten about ‘The Legend of the Six.’ Let me start at the beginning…”
About an hour or so of drinks and recapping later, Dusk finished his third mug, and ends with, “And that’s how all that relates, and works, and such.” He looked around, hoping that the other 3 had understood him. “I get this feeling that the creatures roaming the wilds and this looming feeling of doom that surrounds the country have something to do with the Shards and the Temples they reside in.”
“So what does that have to do with us?” Feron replied, interested in where this was going. At the same time, she feared she already knew
“Well,” Dusk began, gathering all of his thoughts together, “seeing as we now know what might be causing all of this, perhaps we could do something about it? I don’t want the world to die or anything, do you?”
“Well, no,” Foren responded, “But what can we actually do? We’re just a small group of ponies.” At that, Dusk thought for a few moments.
He finally replied, “Well, I…I don’t know what we can do. But I do know that we at least have to try something. This book has given us the knowledge of our approaching doom. I don’t want that to go to waste.”
“What about those Temple you mentioned?” Barry spoke up, a hint of urgency in his voice. “If those Shards really are there, then wouldn’t they be our best bet against this?
“He does make a good point.” Soren added, finally contributing to his role. I need to get them moving, and soon. “If the Shards are as powerful as you say they are, Dusk...Then we have to make use of this opportunity."
“Yeah, but how will a bunch of inactive magical artifacts be of any use to us?” Foren reacted. “As Dusk said, you need a Descendant to get them working.”
“Well, it’s a start,” Dusk answered, “According to the legend, they did it once, and can probably do it again, Descendant or not. Given the circumstances, it’s probably our best bet. But first thing’s first, we need to figure out where the 6 temples are. I know of 2 of them, at least. Everyone knows of the Temple of Twilight in the Royal Palace. I don’t yet have a plan to get in there, so we’ll do that one later. And the other…” Returning back to the book, Dusk flipped through the pages until he found what he was looking for.
“Ah, here we are. The book tells us of an old palace found in what is now the Neverfree Swamp. Apparently it was converted into a temple to Kindness at one point, due to its proximity to nature, and how overgrown it was. Unfortunately, all it also says that it was later abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the passing of the Wielder of Kindness.” He sighed, wondering how they were ever going to accomplish all of this.
A little frustrated, Dusk slammed the book shut, and drank deep from his cider. “Man, I hate how vague this book can be at times. I just wish it would tell me exactly what I need to know.” He stared at the cover, willing it to tell him what he was supposed to do. It was at that time that some spark lit in his mind, and the cover of the tome began to reveal its true nature. Dusk wasn’t the only one to notice this, however.
“It looks like a map of Equestria...” Barry pondered, beginning to recognize landmarks in the feature. “There’s Canterlot, and here’s Ponyville! Appleoosa is over here, and Manehattan is up over there.” He continued, pointing it out for the others to see.
“What are those symbols for?” Feron questioned, motioning toward the lightning bolt, in the sky, and the gemstone over the mountains.
“There’s some over here, too” Soren added, “A star over Canterlot…and a butterfly near Ponyville. Maybe it’s just me, but don’t they correspond with those temples you mentioned, the one for Twilight and Kindness?” The others began to take notice too, and came to the same conclusion: This was a map to their destinations.
The trio of would-be adventurers agreed to convene at the town exit an hour from now: Plenty of time to gather their things and prepare themselves. Barry had to stay behind to tend to his bar, but wished them the best of luck on their journey.
A small campfire stirred to life as dusk faded to night. Four ponies, hardened now by constant struggle, sit around the small signal of life, striving to garner some warmth in spite of the cold, unforgiving night. One of the males, his mane of black shifting from the breeze, concentrated hard, as the faint pink bubble surrounding their encampment strengthened, and settled itself.
“That should hold it for another few hours.” Dusk Fades sighed, weary and sleep deprived. “If the night demons fail to gather our combined scent from though the barrier, we should be able to sleep through the night.” With a stretch and a deep sigh, the purple unicorn retired to his tent. The other three looked on, concern etched into their faces.
Just a few weeks ago, the ragtag group would never have believed the tales of what lay outside the walls of the city. A grass-less wasteland inhabited only the strong, and the insane, what remains of Equestria is now infested with creatures made of pure darkness. The worst of it all is that they seem to be getting stronger. As if their strength during the night hours was bad enough, they now venture out into broad daylight with little regard for the sun’s steely gaze.
They near the settlements, growing in size and number. Some even dare to try to cross the barrier. Those poor fools end up dead; regardless, they seem to be penetrating further and further with each passing month. There’s no telling how long the barriers will last, or what can be done to prepare. All the townsfolk can do is pray.
A dinged up helmet lay on the ground next to where a grizzled stallion sat, staring deep into the heart of the fire. Appointed defender of the group, the knight in dulled armor slowly stroked his sword, honing the edge. Plucking a brown, graying hair out of his mane, and testing it on the weapon, Barry, last name unspoken, sighed and returned to sharpening his blade some more. Though the creatures can be killed, and they have lasted this long, there’s only so much time to rest before the next fight begins. How they were ever going to reach their destination is a question that weighed on all their minds.
“Don’t worry guys!” A rather chipper mare chimed in, feeling the sombre mood settling in. “I’m sure everything will be just fine. We just have to trust in the book, and ourselves.” Feron continued, trying to brighten the sphere.
Barry looked up from attending to his sword, and couldn’t help but smile and shake his head.“How do you do it?” He asked, surprised that he was smiling.
“Do what?” Feron replied, eyes full of curiosity and wonder.
“How do you keep so happy, and carefree?” Barry cleared, content with the edge of his blade. Returning it to its scabbard, the brown stallion, returned to face the blue mare. “You just sit there, and do your thing, and somehow, it makes me smile. It makes all of us smile. How do you do it?” he finished, before stepping out of his worn plate mail, and resting it inside his tent.
“I dunno,” she shrugged in response. “I just try my best to think of all the good we’re trying to do. I think of all the people I’m trying to protect, and somehow, it gives me the courage to keep on smiling.” She giggled a little, before settling down to munch on a cupcake.
“I suppose we all could use a smile now and then. Especially now.” Barry nodded in unison. Lately, he had noticed her solemn attitude, especially after a rough battle. If only you knew just how much we need that smile of yours to survive, haystack. Grabbing an apple from his knapsack, he sat next to the mare, and took a rather large bite out of his dinner. Eating together, the two stared up at the night sky, watching as a small asteroid passed by slowly overhead.
Morning came bright and early. Dusk shook out his mane, before sleepily stepping out into the sunlight. The suns’ rays felt great, even if no actual warmth was carried by them. With a confident nod to himself, the pony packed his things, and grabbed his trusty, if somewhat tattered hat, gently setting it to rest between his ears.
By this time, the others had also arisen from their slumber, though less thrilled than their leader. Each pony began to pack up their tents and supplies as Soren alighted down from his sleeping cloud, a little sore from the way he (hadn’t) slept. Barry settled carefully into his armor, ready to cover the rear as Feron slipped into her robe, ready to proceed with their journey.
“So…Where exactly are we heading again?” Soren wondered aloud, still unsure about the protective barrier. He rubbed his neck, still hurting from his nightly vigil.
“Did you stay up again all night, Soren?” Feron accused, noting his pain and weariness. “I thought I told you that the barrier will-“
“We’re going to the Temple of Laughter.” Dusk interjected, cutting Feron off. He didn’t need her grinding on Soren, especially since his sleep wasn’t that great either. “Besides, I think having a night sentry is a rather brilliant idea, though we should all take turns with it. That way we can all have some sleep, right Soren? ” He continued, some authority touching the last part of his statement. Placing the book in front of where he sat, Dusk surveyed the cover once more. All the signs had vanished, save for a trio of balloons resting over a rather large waterfall to the northeast of Ponyville. It would seem the book was willing them to go here first.
With a sheepish grin, Soren nodded. “Y-yeah. That could work…” He added, muttering something else to himself. Dusk caught something about “bad sleep”, but he decided to leave the discussion at that. With a flick of light, the barrier dispelled and the group of intrepid adventurers continued their quest once more.
Several hours later, the four stopped, setting down their gear to rest. A small stream ran not a few yards from where they lay, a small trickle enough for a drink.
“All right, we’ll rest here for about 30 minutes, and then we’re on our way again.” Dusk ordered, levitating four canteens by himself. “Drink up while you can, and fill up every canteen we have, as much as possible. There’s no telling if we’ll find another source of water before we reach the temple, so we’ll have to make this count.”
After he was satisfied, the midnight colored equine returned to studying their map. "Ok, we appear to be here, by what’s left of the Neighagra River. The temple must be at the base of the falls." He pondered aloud to himself. I wonder why they put it there… His train of thought was interrupted by the touch of a metal hoof. Dusk turned to find Barry giving him a rather stern look.
“Dusk, there’s something that’s been bothering me for a while.” The serious expression on his face belied a subtle hint of concern, and is that…fear? “I feel like someone, or something, is following us. It doesn’t feel like the shadow beasts, however. They never travel alone. This feels different. I can’t quite place the feeling, but whatever it is, it’s intelligent.” Dusk solemnly nodded in response.
He never realized this entire journey would take such a toll, on all of them. It forced them to grow up so fast, faster than any pony should. Death was ever present, hovering just on the edge of their vision and minds. But things couldn’t remain like this forever, right? Well, whatever comes, we’ll be ready for it. I hope. With that, he left the book lying on the table, and ran over to grab a drink with his comrades.
“So, about how much longer till we reach this…temple thing?” a rather brash, if somewhat deep voice pondered from the back of the group. The voice belonged to a white pegasus, donned in faded royal armor. His yellow-orange hair fluttered in the wind, as his hazel eyes scanned the horizon above the group. Descending back to the ground, he folded his wings, and continued his march alongside Barry.
“Weren’t you listening, you thick-skulled imbecile? It’s called the “Temple of Laughter,” and you just asked that same question not an hour ago, and the hour before that!” a beautiful voice chimed in from between Feron and the rear guard. Something felt off about that melodic voice, but you just couldn’t quite place it…Her velvet coat, and amber mane glistened in the half-light of the late afternoon. Turning to stare down the other new arrival, she gave a haughty “hmph!” and continued her answer. “And if I remember correctly, our dear guide and savior here, Dusk, has told us before that our destination is about another day away.”
“Oh shut-up, you damned seductress.” The pegasus retorted, snorting in disgust. “If not for your new friends here, I’d have torn that fake coat right off your demon body!” His nostrils flared, edging slowly to the long-sword at his side. Its crystal embedded hilt reflected the dim phantom of the slowly setting sun.
“I’d like to see you try,” was her only response. The oddly warm pony tightened her stance, bracing for the fight to ensue. Just as she expected, the White Pegasus leaped into the air with the speed of a Manticore, letting lose a cry just a fierce. Sword now in full draw, the pegasus began his speedy descent to land a crushing overhead swing. Not letting a bead of sweat show, the mare took a deep breath, watching his every move, waiting for just the right chance to-
“That’s enough out of you two,” a younger male voiced calmly. Just before the “finishing-blow” could be delivered, the pegasus was swept up in a mist of energy. Dusk Fades slowly stepped toward the two, shaking his head. Mystic binds encircled the pegasus, settling his sword back into its hilt. At this same time, a zipper closed tight on the rather saucy lips of the mare who smirked at the pegasi’s fall. “That’s the third time this week I’ve had to restrain you two.”
The leader stopped to rest before the now dusty pegasus. Looking him dead in his old eyes, Dusk slowly released the binds. “Storm Chaser, I know you don’t trust Alura here, especially considering she’s not quite pony,” he gestured to the velvet mare, who was indignantly staring away from them, legs crossed, “but if we want to survive, and I’m sure you do, then we’re going to have to work together. She’s knows this area even better than you do. She’s our best hope of reaching the Neighagra Falls in one piece. Until then, you are to leave her alone, understand?” With a curt nod, Storm let out one more snort, before settling back onto his hooves and setting his helmet back on his head properly.
Chuckling from just a few feet away, close to the edge of the river basin they traveled along, Alura reveled in Storms chastisement. In an instant, Dusk was in front of her, his weary yet stern eyes matching hers. At his sudden change of placement, she immediately fell silent. “And the same goes for you toward him.” The purple stallion continued, voice unwavering. “You are a member of our group now. We give you food, shelter, and protection, whether you need it or not. This means you follow my rules. Now, no goading Storm, under any circumstances, got it? He’s had it rough enough as it is. There’s no call for you to feed his stereotypes and judgments. There’s enough hatred in this world already, we don’t need you adding to it.”
The zipper holding her mouth shut vanished, as Alura began stretching her jaw once more, a little unnerved by the feeling of magic sealing her lips. “I know, I know” She immediately began, smiling coyly at the leader. “I didn’t mean for anypony to get hurt. I was just having some fun with him.” She winked at Storm, who abruptly snorted again before turning to take a drink from the slowly enlarging river. He muttered to himself between sips, but at least nopony seemed ready to kill each other, for the moment.
At that, Dusk resumed his position next to Feron, who watched on with silent regret. As the days grew, she began to feel more and more utterly useless. Her smile began to fade with each passing day, with less laughter all around. They could all feel the change, as the depression surrounding them slowly begin to crush them. If only there was some way I could get these two to see eye-to-eye. At least then, everyone could get some rest, and we could cover more ground per day. Maybe then I wouldn’t feel so sad…
At the same time, Dusk couldn’t help but wonder how this had all come to be so painful, and tiresome. The conflict today reminded him of the days before, when the four of them had come upon a seemingly helpless mare being chased by a renegade pegasus.
“All right you two, that’s enough water for now. We’re heading out.” Dusk called to his fellow party members. With a bit of a sigh, the two began heading back to the small camp they had set up for the moment.
“Aww, do we have to?” Feron pleaded, taking one last sip from the river. “I was hoping to go swimming…”
Sensing there had been some sort of misunderstanding due to their somber faces, Dusk walked over to the Pegasus and Earth Pony, Soren and Feron. “Buck up guys, we’re not leaving the river just yet. We’re going to be following it north, to its source! According to the book, this is the Neighagra River, which is filled by the Neighagra Falls.” He continued, glad to see their faces brighten a bit.
“Ya know, Dusk,” Barry piped up from behind, “Perhaps if you let the rest of us look at the map sometime, these kinds of things might not happen.” The older stallion looked over at Dusk, specifically at the bag holding the book. Dusk sighed, understanding what he meant, and lowered his head.
“I know, I know, but this book has so much information inside that hasn’t revealed itself yet! There’s always a new tidbit of information to be found every time I open it. I just can’t put it down.” Dusk pleaded, subconsciously placing one hoof on the bag on the ground in front of him. Soren noticed this, and his eyes widened slightly.
Oh no. This is what I feared would happen. The book is beginning to attach to him. Can he handle that kind of symbiosis?
Feron, too, noticed the gesture, and wondered why it had occurred. That book…there is definitely something up with it. Hmm….
Barry shook his head, smirking a little. “I know the feeling, Haystack, I’ve read a few good books in my day, but if this is going to be a problem in the future, it might be best for somepony else to keep hold of it for a while. "
“I-I could hold it for a while,” Soren volunteered shakily. He knew the book best, though none of the others knew that. He felt he could best keep it safe.
“There, ya see? Simple as that.” Barry nodded, stepping forward a hair. “Now just hand over the book, and-“ Before he could finish, a high-pitched scream caught all their attentions. “What in tarnation was that?”
“It sounded like a woman.” Feron replied, eyes wide. “We should go help!” She shouted, running off in the direction of the cry.
“C’mon everypony!” Dusk commanded, running after the blue mare. Barry ran to grab his sword and helmet, before giving chase as well.
“Oh, I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” Soren moaned, slowly flapping after the rest of his party.
Meanwhile, a rather scarlet pony was running as fast as her legs could carry her. A white blur gave chase, easily outpacing her, but falling prey to her quick change in direction. She continued running, weaving among boulders and spires strewn about the canyon area. What may have once been a cave lake was now a maze of crevices, stalactites/stalagmites, and rubble.
Stopping on a dime, the blur was revealed to be a white pegasus pony, armed with a broadsword. His armor glinted in the light of the slowly setting sun. The markings identified him as part of Cloudsdale’s Regal Guard, a legion consisting of only the most skilled pegasi. With a fire in his eyes, he once again resumed the chase, expertly dodging any obstacles in his path.
“Give it up, she-devil! Your succubus hide can’t run forever! The Light of Justice shines through your trickery and deceit. You will be brought to Justice!” Storm chaser gritted his teeth, having lost sight of the velvet colored pony. He began scanning below to try and find any sign of her passing.
Back on the outside, Feron had arrived at the mouth of a rather large cave. Dusk came to a halt beside her, as both gazed on at its huge maw. Barry trotted up to the two of them, looked from them to the cave and back, then said, “It sure is mighty dark down there. Are ya sure that’s where the scream came from, haystack?” He looked over at Feron, who was just now recovering from the size of the cave entrance.
“Mhmm! I’m positive.” The look in her eye told him everything he needed to know. All three looked on at the dark, gloomy depths that lay in front of them.
“All right then. Let’s get to it.” Barry confirmed, taking the first tentative steps into the darkness below. “Boy, I sure wish we had a light in here.” He calmly said, as the others began following him closely.
It took a few minutes, but Dusk finally remembered that he was a unicorn. “Hold up minute guys.” He said, as he took off his hat, and began concentrating. The others stopped, and looked back in the general direction of their leader. It took a couple of tries, but light finally revealed the cave walls. Dusk’s horn gave off a slightly shaky glow, as he tried to even out the output.
“Nice thinking, Dusky!” Feron cheered, happy to be able to see again. Barry simply nodded back at the purple unicorn, before the group began moving forward once more.
Back at the entrance, Soren sat there, frozen by the darkness that awaited. Deciding against going inside, he instead conjured up a cloud, and laid on it. “They probably don’t need my help anyway,” he rationalized before pushing his cloud up higher. “I’ll just keep watch up here. Don’t want any monsters appearing without someone to let the others know, right?” He continued, still shaking from the void that had swallowed his friends below.
Prologue: The Legend of the Six
Long ago, during times of peace, there resided a country full of bright, smiling faces, and benevolent, near god-like rulers. A small town, a grand, breathtaking castle, and ponies all living life to the fullest. There had been crises and troubles, as with any civilization, but over-all times were the best in thousands of years.
This was all before the Age of Darkness. A great and powerful creature from the darkest depths of one’s nightmares emerged from the south, sweeping over the lands. Battles were waged, alliances formed, and many lives were lost, but the darkness always won. None could withstand the might of this new enemy.
Just as all hope was to be lost, 6 mares from a small country town appeared to fight the Darkness. The Six Wielders, as they have since come to be known, held within themselves a power that could withstand the mightiest of foes; The Shards of Friendship. Six Pieces of an ancient magic that utilizes the bond found between close friends. A mighty battle was waged, but the Wielders prevailed against The Darkness, freeing this realm from a terrible fate. It was not without cost, however.
Many years came and went, as the Wielders faded to legend. Statues and praise followed their epic, and eventually led to worship. Temples were erected long after the Wielders’ passing, and tales of their descendants retaining a sliver of their power reigned. The Shards themselves are said to have disappeared from this realm with the passing of the Wielders, while peace and prosperity reigned thereafter.
The descendants of the Wielders were said to have become versed in the use of the Shards even without their presence, and became the dedicated protectors of this realm. Eventually they too passed, and their magic lost to the rest of this world. Many still believe in the power of the Shards, but worship of the Wielders has since faded, and with it, protection against the forces of darkness. The Temples have gone into disrepair, forgotten and abandoned to the wilds. Most now simply believe the Shards of Friendship to be a myth, something for fools and adventurers to seek after, in vain.
As the rulers of this land are neither immortal nor invulnerable, none are left to attest to the truth of the Legend of the Six. Stained Glasses in the Main Palace, which once chronicled the legends of this land, have since lost their meanings to time. Without meaning, the Shards’ power has waned. Monsters roam the lands outside of town, now protected by ancient magic that is, itself, slowly fading.
Friendships have since left this world, and alongside it, hope for tomorrow.
As the world slowly dies, ancient forces are arising, threatening what little existence remains. Heroes come forth, hoping to protect what is left, but none can truly hope to outlast the darkness, not without harmony…
