dashing hearts
ponyville: the first week

I guess some introductions are in order before I begin. Well, my name is Cain, no I have no last name (a product of being an orphan I guess, and yes I am a human. One of the few that live in Equestria) I'm 5'6, slightly on the slim side with long wavy brown hare and green eyes I'm twenty years old, going on twenty-one in a couple of weeks, ummm, I was born in Fillydelphea, or so I'm told. When I turned eighteen I left the orphanage and went into culinary school, and within a year I graduated. In my life I have had my fair share of racism and xenophobia, but was able to brush it off in my own way. Unfortunately it did make it hard to find a good job as a chef in the big city, but ever the optimist I soldered on, to no avail.
One day I received a check for a sizable amount as inheritance from an uncle I apparently had but never knew of.
It wasn't a whole lot but enough to do something with, and since the lease on my apartment was up in a couple of days I figured now was as good a time as any to get a fresh start.
The question now was where? I didn't know aneypony, or have any friends to turn to for advice. Not to mention most ponies in the city took to humans with either fear or distaste at the very least, while others preferred to sling insults or garbage in my direction.
"There must be someplace where a human like me will be accepted, or at the very least tolerated enough to live out a normal life."
I proposed to myself as I paced the floor of my modest studio apartment.
Just then I caught something out of the corner of my eye, a newspaper from a couple of months ago. The front page was a picture of a postcard town called Ponyville. I didn't even bother reading the article, but the town looked perfect. Small and peaceful with quaint little houses and rolling hills adorned with grassy fields, it looked like a little slice of paradise.
"Perfect!" I exclaimed to myself. A small town like this must be in need of someone with culinary skills and I bet I can get a place their for less than I'm paying now. Instantly my mind started to reel with ideas of putting down actual roots in a place I could call home, I could make friends, become part of a community, maybe even meet my very special somepony.
I had had more than a few crushes on more than a few mares in my life but had always been rejected, or outright laughed at by said mares. "Oh well theirs always plenty of fish in the sea" I would say to myself (if you couldn't tell by now I'm a glass is half full kind of person) I just didn't see any point in sulking over things I didn't have any control over. Your ticket to the future is always blank.
Or thats what I always believed. My mind was set, ponyville was to be my new home, and that was where I was going to make my home.
Over the next couple of days I was quite busy, first I cashed the check from my mysterious uncle the sum of which was well over nine hundred bits, enough to live off of for about a year and a half. I sold all of my furniture, resolving that I would buy new appointments once I was settled in my new home. I found a nice enough home to purchase in a local listing nothing much a modest one bedroom one bathroom just off from the main street of the small town.
It sounded perfect for me to start out in, or even spend a lifetime in. As fast as I could, I sent off the first months payment, as well as paying for the last installment for my apartment. After a short packing of my personal belongings, I was standing outside, taking one last look at the tall building I had called home for almost two years. The building seemed to take on a more grey appearance as I stood before it bags in toe.
"Good bye" I whispered to the old brownstone building that had been my only friend. It was old and somewhat run down, but it had been a place I could call sanctuary on dark days and cold nights when all others had forsaken me. It had been there to accept me, never judging. Just being their, tall and strong as if to say "welcome". I was going to miss him and somewhere inside me I felt like he would miss me too, a silly thought I know. But Im sure he would be happy to see me going off to find my own happiness.
A single tear rolled down my cheek followed by a swelling in my chest as I made my way to the train station. The clouds over head started to part, and the warm sun began to shine on my face as if to say that Celestia herself had blessed my new journey. As I strode down the busy street of Fillydelphia boulevard, I began to recite an old poem in my head I remembered from a book I read as a young boy
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little pony must think it queer,
To stop without a farmhouse near.
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his coat bells a shake,
And ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
somehow the poem seemed relevant to me at the moment, and I did have miles to go before I slept, and a promise to myself that I had to keep. I will find my own happiness, their was no doubt in my mind and it would be in Ponyville.
"One ticket to Ponyville, one way please" I said to the mare behind the ticket counter. She was an old mare with a gray mane and a dark blue coat. She glanced awkwardly over her round glasses at me.
"Twenty bits please" she asked in a casual tone. I placed the amount on the ticket counter.
"That train departs in twenty minutes." She printed off my ticket and slid it to me with a hoof before returning to her magazine.
"Have a nice day, sir." she said with one last look that suggested that she didn't encounter manny humans in her line of work, a sort of look that a pony might give to another pony with snakes coming out of there ears.
"Thank you too" I said in my most friendly tone.
I seized my ticket and luged my bags to platform 2B finding the throng of ponies seemed to dwindle as I got closer to my platform. I guess Ponyville wasn't a hot location or something. I reached my platform with sixteen minutes to spare, my hair hung down over my eyes in a haphazardly way, so I took one of my elastic hair ties from my pocket and secured the mess behind my head in a pony tail. I was so excited to begin my journey this morning that I had forgot to comb my wavy quaffer.
With my vision un obstructed now, I took a look around the platform and couldn't help but notice that almost every pony around me was casting awkward looks, most of them sideways glances but I couldn't help but also notice that they all were giving me a wide space.
"Im not going to blow up or anything" I thought to myself looking at my watch so it wouldn't seem like I was paying them any mind. I chanced a glance sideways and saw a family sitting on a bench against a wall, the mother was a green unicorn with a light blue mane. In her lap sat a little unicorn filly who shared her coat color but with an orange main and tail. Next to them sat the father, a dark brown earth pony with a short orange mane like his daughter.
The three of them sat passing the time with idle chat and the occasional shared laughter. They looked so happy together and in the back of my mind I wondered if someday I would have something like that. A smile crept across my face at the prospect of such a warm, happy future. The screeching of train wheels broke my concentration as I realized that my train had arrived. "Ok this is it" I said to myself reaching down to take hold of my luggage, I looked over my shoulder toward the city of fillydelphia and gave a single nod as a silent farewell. Somewhere in that city my past was buried. My parents, the reason why they abandoned me. Many unanswered questions within the brick and concrete. But I've always preferred to keep the past where it belonged, behind me. Ahead of me awaited a new beginning, a new world, and the chance at a life Ive dreamt of since I was small. "Once more into the breach dear friends."
It was dark and cold, I shivered from my hands down to my toes. I wasn't myself. I was a small boy and I was all alone shivering in the dark. Slowly I moved forward calling out for somepony, anypony to please help. But there was nothing, only darkness and cold. My eyes began to tear and I dropped to my knees warping my arms around myself to try and fight the bitter cold, but still I shook. The moisture from my eyes threatening to turn to ice as it rolled now freely down my cheeks. Was I going to die? Was this how it would all end? Without knowing love or warmth. No pony would even attend my funeral, who could morn something like me?
Just as I was about to lie down and await cold death to claim me, a flash occurred in the sky above me. My eyes shot up to behold an amazing sight. A circle of a dozen colors expanding into a huge booming halo overhead, and from its center a brilliant ray of rainbow light shot down at me. The moment it touched me I was bathed in a warmth I had never felt before. It was almost like this light was touching my insides, and all of a sudden, I didn't feel cold or scared anymore.
I stood upright, and looked up at the multi colored light, but found it was to bright to look directly at. The circle of colors continued to expand and as it did it caused a low rumble in its wake. It was subtle, but it seemed to echo into my bones. Just then I heard something, it was a voice. A voice I had never heard before but it was soft and kind, it seemed to come from inside me. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on it to try and decipher what it was saying, slowly it started to come to me clearer and clearer tell it was just on the verge of my understanding.
"Cain" the voice said. It sounded so soft and gentle, like how I imagine a mother would speak to her foal. I wanted to listen to it forever, a voice full of love and compassion and it was speaking to me.
When I opened my eyes, I was greeted by the interior of a train car. The rumbling of wheels on track was faint in the background. I was dreaming, but of what? I remembered it being scary at first but something told me it was good towards the end. I shook off the thought, noticing that in my slumping my hair was a mess again. I removed my hair band and re arranged the wavy locks back again, securing them with the elastic band. I let out a deep sigh and took a look out the window to my right, we must be far from the city by now on account of the trees becoming forests that gave way to rolling grassy hills and flower filled meadows.
I placed my head against the glass of the window and caught a glimpse of my face in its reflection, I prided myself on being an optimist but sometimes I couldn't help but wonder why in Equestria I hadn't just been born a pony like everypony else.
Maybe then I wouldn't have to live such a difficult life.
But enough of that, it was time to start looking forward to my new life and my new home. Right on cue the outline of a small town appeared just over the horizon. It almost seemed to shimmer in the noonday sun. In its background, large mountains seemed to vault against the sky, one of which held the city of Canterlot which shined like a golden star. I felt anxious and just a little bit nervous, I had never left Filly in my life, what was Ponyville like? Would the other ponies their welcome me or just throw trash at me like in the city?
Only one way to find out I thought as the train came to a steady halt at the station. I rose from my seat, took a deep breath, and garbed my bags from the overhead storage. It wasn't much, but it sure felt heavy. I had packed what was left of my stuff after selling what I couldn't take with me. My whole life was in those bags, which wasn't much to gasp about. Some blankets, a couple dishes, cups, cutlery, a pillow, and three or four books. Aside from a few odds and ends and my clothes from the apartment. I had enough bits though to get myself some modern comforts for my new home.
I stepped out of the train car and walked through the small cover of the tinny train station. Greeting me was Ponyville. One large building stood like a tower in the center of the town which I assumed was town hall. The sun was bright and the sky was dotted with puffy white clouds. A grey pegasus pony carrying a mail bag zipped by my view and I followed it with my eyes, taking in the town.
It was peaceful, quaint, and a lot quieter than the city I had just come from. Ponies were roaming around doing their daily business, and seemed to be enjoying this lovely day as well. I stepped off from the station steps and retrieved the piece of paper from my pocket which had the directions to my new home written on it. I wasn't to far from my destination at all turns out, I returned the slip of paper to my pocket and garbed my bags. "Well, this is it" I said to myself as I began walking toward my new house.
So fare it was going well, no pony was giving me harsh looks or slinging insults or trash at me but most everypony I passed did look at me as if they had never seen something like me before. Especially one particular mare. She was an off cream color with a purple and pink mane and three pieces of candy as her cutie mark. She stepped back a good three paces as I passed her
"Hello" I said to her with a smile for the sake of making a good impression. She didn't respond but that was to be expected. It was going to take some time for the citizens to warm up to the idea of sharing their town with a human.
So I continued on. Ahead of me was a small house with a thatch roof and a brick chimney coming out from a red brick body.
It was by no means the most swanky home on the block but it looked cozy. In a rush of excitement I ran up to the little house and stood just in front of the arched dark wood door. I dropped my bags at my sides and gently placed my right hand on the rough worn surface of the door. It was time to introduce myself.
"Hello, my name is Cain" I said softly to the silent home before me.
"I guess were going to be living together from now on. But don't worry, I promise to take good care of you." Maybe it was just me, but the old house seemed to feel warmer under my palm. As if it was overjoyed to have someone live in it again.
The yard was surprisingly well kept, it had a variety of flowers around the property line in all different colors, and the grass was short and springy. I looked forward to tending it in the future but right now I had to get inside. I quickly located the rock next to the door, underneath was the small bronze key to the front door as indicated by the real-estate agent in the confirmation letter she had sent. The lock clicked as I turned the key and the door slid open with a creek.
I stepped into the sunlit entryway of my new home and was instantly greeted with a big surprise. A chair, a sofa, and tables, the living room was furnished! And not shabbily either, their was a lush red upholstered couch and matching hoof chair, as well as a dark brown wood coffee table. The pony who lived hear before must have left it all when they moved out. To the right just behind the chair was a median sized circular window. Outside I could see the house of the ponies that lived next door, maybe latter I could introduce myself and hopefully they wont slam the door in my face like my old neighbors in Filly had.
I continued my self tour of the house, next with the kitchen which was connected to the living room. It was a little cramped but had plenty of space for me to move around and I couldn't wait to cook my first meal in it. Somewhat modest, with a refrigerator, an oven slash stove top, a variety of shelfs and drawers, as well as a small pantry. Next to the kitchen a short hallway lead to a door, to the left of that was another door against the wall of the hallway. I strode down the hall and peered through the door at the end to reveal a modest but spacious bathroom. Not much to speak of, toilet, sink, and a somewhat short bathtub along with a brass shower head. I flicked the switch next to the door and the light bulb sprung to life. A small layer of dust was on the surfaces of the sink and medicine cabinet. I would have to clean that up latter, but for now I turned off the light and went to inspect what was behind the other door. The old wood creaked as I gently pushed it open. The light from outside shined through the window onto the planks of the hardwood floor. The first thing to catch my attention was the bed in the middle of the room, it was a queen sized frame with a mattress to boot! My luck just got better and better. A new home fully furnished and a big bed with mattress to go with it. I inspected the mattress more closely and sure enough it was almost brand new, not to mention free. I was really going to sleep good tonight.
In my excitement I hadn't noticed how stiff my arms and legs were. I rotated my left arm and heard a loud pop of the joint. Maybe I should take a walk to shake out the stiffness, and I did need to get familiar with the town and find out where I could buy something to eat as well.
So with that thought I grabbed my key and slipped out the front door closing it behind me. I clicked the lock and looked up at my new home.
"Ill be back latter ok" I whispered to my house before turning around, a gentle breeze brushed past me wiping through my hair and caressing my cheek. I sighed lightly at the refreshing gust, already feeling like this was the start of something good.
Across the street their was a dark pink earth pony mare with a green and white mane, the house behind her was one that looked somewhat like my own. Next to her was a little dark green colt with a matching mane, he was desperately trying to catch a butterfly by jumping up and down repeatedly. It was cute to say the least, but I soon noticed that his mother was eyeing me with a look like I was a manticore dressed like a clown, dancing in front of her. I flashed my nicest smile and gave her a wave.
"Good afternoon." I called out to the confused mare. She just watched me silently, but her colt who had also taken notice of me was now waving a hoof with a gleeful expression on his little face. The pink mare quickly raised a hoof and lowered the waving one of her colt.
The mare watched me closely as I began to walk down the cobble stone path of my new neighborhood. No doubt taking the little colt back into their home once I was out of sight. Like I said, it was going to take time.
The streets of Ponyville were just as nice and peaceful as I had imagined them to be. Their were ponies eating lunch at a local restaurant, (a good place to inquire about possible employment maybe). Their were ponies shopping at local stores, or going about their daily jobs. The streets were lined with street lights and every house and building seemed to shine with happiness. My eyes caught sight of the cream colored mare I had seen earlier today. She was in the middle of purchasing some scrolls from a pony at a street cart when she suddenly dropped one of her bits on the ground in front of her. Slowly she bent over to retrieve it with her mouth. Her rump pointing up in the process. Now living in Equestria, its completely normal to see nudity on a daily basis. But being human meant that I had to wear clothes, (custom made of course) to cover myself. One might think that Id be used to seeing pony rump's, but something about seeing a mare bent over with her flank in the air was very tempting, especially when they'd flick their tails slightly to the side as if to give me a quick look at their smooth slits and tight anuses just under their soft tails.
The cream colored mare swished her tail from side to side giving me just the slightest glimpse of her soft cream colored snatch, and her puckered pink asshole. Whats more, she started moving her rump from side to side as she tried to reach her lost bit. Thoughts flashed through my mind of her on my bed doing the same thing, beckoning me to move behind her and rut her as hard as I could until I added my own cream to her already creamy coat.
AH! what was I thinking? I had to get some air, and away from the sight of that mares ass. I darted away at a brisk walk, trying my hardest to shake the image of the mares round inviting rump from the forefront of my mind. I had just moved to Ponyvill today. I had to make a good impression, and ogling like some perverted old stallion was not the way to do that.
The last thing I wanted was for the ponies of Ponyville to think that I was some sex crazed human. My thought process was interrupted when I noticed that something soft was under my feet.
Grass, I was standing on some very green well trimmed grass.
(Hay at least it had taken my mind off pony ass right?) I took in my surroundings and soon realized that I was indeed in a park. I took a cursory glance around and before me was a beautiful pond with crystal clear water and ducks drifting about on its surface. Stretching from one end of the pond to the other a bridged arched over the surface of the water.
It looked like the picturesque place for a summer picnic, if only I had somepony to share it with. "Sigh" oh well we will just have to see now wont we? I thought to myself. I looked around a bit more taking in the pristine nature all around me. But something stood out to me, it was in the sky so I looked up. The sun was at my back and above me starting from the top of the mountain that Canterlot sat on and arching down into the valley below was one of the brightest rainbows I had ever seen in my life. It seemed to radiate an inner light, but something else about it kept me transfixed, like I had seen it somewhere before but just couldn't put my finger on it.
Oh what was it? I know I've seen something like it recently. My mind conjured images of the train car that had brought me to Ponyville, and then just like that it finally hit me. And I felt so stupid for not remembering sooner.
I had seen a rainbow or something like one in my d-
just then before I could finish my train of thought, something came at me out of right field. It was to fast for me to catch a glimpse of, and before I knew what was going on I was flat on my back being dragged along the grass and dirt until I began to form a small crater around me. Which finally brought me to a halt.
Ow, was I could think. It felt like I had just been hit by a carriage being pulled by four burley stallions, galloping at full speed. I was sure that I was going to feel this tomorrow morning.
Their was a cloud of thick dust all around me obscuring my vision, but I didn't need to see to know that I was on my back in a crater of dirt. I took a breath, realizing that the force of the impact had knocked the wind out of me but regretted it. I coughed hard as the thick dust in the air hit my lungs and tasted like, well, dirt.
But something other than the dust in the air kept me from getting a proper lung full of air. Something on top of me just over my chest to be precise. As the smoke began to clear and I raised my head to look closer at the meteorite that had seen fit to strike me down, I saw what it was that had hit me.
"Beautiful" was all I could think, but really I couldn't come up with an explanation of what was on top of me. It looked like the blue sky and a rainbow had conceived a child, a child that had fallen out of the sky and was now laying what seemed to be unconscious on top of me. It had wings of cyan blue feathers and rainbow hair. Yes rainbow hair! Upon closer inspection I saw that it also had a tail of the same coloring as its head.
"OH, your a pegasus pony" I whispered in a slightly pained voice to the sleeping pony on top of me. Still it was a sight to see, its mane was slightly messy maybe from the crash, but aside from that I was able to asses that it was indeed a female, because of her long eyelashes and feminine features.
Her mane was by far though the most interesting part of her. In all my life I had never seen any pony with such a mane color and I found myself wondering if it was in fact real, or maybe just some really well done dye job.
I reached up without thinking and took a small tuft of the orange part of her mane and ran it in-between my pointer finger and thumb to see if it felt slightly course or rough from a dye. But sure enough it was as smooth as the finest silks and as soft as fresh cotton. From where I lay on the ground, I could just detect the scent of her mane. It was subtle, but it smelt like fresh rain on a summers day, but slightly sweeter, more fragrant in a way.
All of a sudden a cyan blue hoof came up and swatted my hand away from the rainbow locks of hair.
"Hay!" an angry voice called out to me from on top of my chest. I looked down at the blue pegasus to see she had regained consciousness and was now glaring directly at me with angry rose colored eyes and teeth bearing.
"Who do you think you are!?" the pegasus demanded in a sort of gravely tomboyish tone. I noticed that her cheeks were slightly red, most likely from the anger she was feeling or could it have been because she was embarrassed? Before I could muster a reply she broke the temporary silence.
"I don't like other ponies touching my mane!" she scolded, now scrunching up her nose in an attempt to look tough. I fumbled for a response to try and right the misunderstanding, but all I could come up with was
"But I'm not a pony."
Smooth one dummy. Now she must think that your some kind of smart alec, and she is really pretty now that I can get a good look at her. She was indeed tomboyish with her rough short mane style and gravely voice. But something about her just radiated a different kind of feminine charm.
I half expected to get a hoof across the face, but instead the rainbow pegasus just looked me over with a mix of curiosity and scrutiny. After she had given me the once over she started to look more confused than angry.
"Are you new or something? Cuz I don't think I've ever seen you around town before." she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Well actually i just moved hear today. Oh and sorry about touching your mane, that was rude of me." I said as friendly as I could in an attempt to get on the right track with this pretty mare on my chest.
"Oh don't worry about it. Just don't let it happen again ok? So wear did you live before moving to Ponyville?" She now was wearing a cheery smile and her rose colored eyes now took on a curious sparkle.
"Well I lived in Fillydelphia all my life, until just a few hours ago. By the way, I hate to be a bother, especially since we just met and all. But can I ask you to get off of me now please?"
The pegasus's face went from blue to cherry red in ten seconds flat, she instantly unfurled her wings and began to hover up off my still laying body.
"Uhh, sorry about the whole crashing into you thing. Their was this bird that I had to avoid. And well, you pretty much can guess what happened next."
She touched down gracefully on the grass next to me and began drawing circles on the ground with her hoof obviously feeling bad about what had happened.
"Oh, its no problem, I probably had it coming. For something or other." I told her in hopes that she would show that happy face of hers again.
She smiled wide up at me and tucked her wings onto her sides.
"My names Rainbow Dash." she said holding a hoof out to me,
well this was new, not only a pony that didn't look at me funny but a pony that was actually introducing herself to me like I was any other pony? I reached out my hand and grasped the extended hoof in front of me, feeling her soft plush coat under my fingers and giving it a shake.
"Im Cain, nice to meet you Rainbow Dash." rainbow dash looked at my hand in a sort of awkward way before I released it, and the inevitable question finally popped up.
"So umm, I was just curious but, well, what are you?" And their it was. Ok, moment of truth, she'll either run away, or she'll show that she's a nice girl and not act weird.
"Im a human actually." I said in a matter of fact way while giving her an. "its ok if you run off screaming" kind of smile. Several long seconds passed between us. Her on her hoofs next to me, and me still in my little crater, when finally she broke the silence.
"Oh, well.... Ok, welcome to Ponyville, Cain the human." She smiled down at me and at that moment my heart skipped a beat or two. I don't think that I was even breathing. At that moment she appeared to be the most beautiful mare in all of Equestria.
"Can I give you a hoof out of that hole?"
Her question snapped me out of my daze and i once again fumbled for an answer.
"Uh yeah, now that you mention it I think that my foot might be broken, OW! Yep, pretty sure its broken." Rainbow Dash's jaw dropped and she took on a sudden look of panic.
"Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh, I am sooooo sorry Cain, I didn't think that I ran into you that hard!"
Rainbow dash was obviously freaking out, so I thought that Id try to calm her a bit.
"Hey, hey, it was an accident. Don't worry about it, at least today wasn't boring right?" Rainbow dash's face softened a bit and she even let out a little chuckle.
"Heh heh, I like you Cain, and I cant wait to hang out again. But next time, Ill try not to break anything else, promise."
"Well thanks, I would really appreciate that." we both shared a laugh as the sun began to set over the horizon, I hadn't noticed that it had gotten so late but Ill tell you this, Rainbow Dashes sparkling eyes and happy smile in the warm light of a sunset is something I would happily break both legs to see again, "OW!" But right now I needed to get to a hospital before I passed out from pain.
The next ten or twenty minutes consisted of my new friend and me maneuvering for a way to get me up right on my one good foot. It was times like these that I wished that I had four feet to walk on like a pony. Once I was finally on my one good foot, I soon realized that I was about to fall over again when rainbow dash garbed my sleeve with her teeth and flung my arm over her shoulder while she hovered next to me acting as my crutch. She flashed me a warm smile as we slowly but surely made our way over the grassy knoll toward what I assumed was the closest hospital.
Rainbow dash was warm and she felt strong as she helped me limp along. I couldn't wait to get to know her better in the future. But somewhere in the back of my head I had a feeling that after this, I probably wouldn't see her again. Doesn't mean that I cant enjoy this nice moment with her right?
