Becoming friends?
Previous ChapterNext ChapterBecoming friends?Thousands of years ago (Celestia only knows how long ago exactly) ponies were slaves to the human race. They were dark times. Ponies suffered without end at the end of either the whip, or the grueling heat as they toiled under burning sun or biting cold under their human masters rule. Year after year ponies were forced to plow fields, haul heavy equipment, with only the promise of death when they became to old to work or if they should get injured from serving their greedy masters. Parents were powerless as their foals were ripped from their hooves and sold into servitude.
Unicorns with their magic not fully developed to the point that they are today were made to live as pets to spoiled human children or forced to do tricks at side shows, the humans in their fear put down any that showed potential for greater power, or would saw off the horn completely as a warning to all ponies who would oppose, While pegasus having the great gift of flight could do nothing but watch from the clouds as their fellow ponies suffered and prayed to the sun and the stars for freedom and salvation.
History gets fuzzy around this point, for it was so long ago. Some ponies say that a great uprising accord, added by the pegasus ponies. In this way it is said that afterward the now liberated ponies decided to be more merciful to their former masters and let the surviving humans go free.
The other way tells of three powerful beings that freed the enslaved ponies. The first was a pony that shone like the sun, the other was one that whore a vail of the night sky, and a creature (the last of its kind) that held great and terrible power.
But that was a long time ago, regardless of this fact, old prejudices die hard. (as they say)
I slowly opened my eyes to catch the first glimpses of the celling tiles of a white, sterile hospital room. My head hurt slightly as I slowly sat up, pushing back the thin hospital sheets.
The sun had just barley peeked over the horizon as a white mare with a light pink mane and a nurses hat on gently opened the door to the small hospital room.
"sleep well mr. Cain?" The mare asked with a cheery smile. Aside from her smile I could tell she had been working all night from the dark bags under her eyes, WAIT! wait, hold up, Im getting ahead of myself let me rewind back a bit.
The day prior.
After mine and Rainbow dash's "run in" and brief moment of getting acquainted, she had insisted on helping me hobble my way to the local Ponyville hospital. She hovered next to me at shoulder level with my arm over her back as we gimped along through the ever darkening streets of Ponyville.
The street light cast shadows of us as we passes under their warm glow. The contrast between filly and Ponyville was evident in that moment, it was completely silent. Only the sound of crickets sounded in the distance and the rustle of leaves as a gentle breeze blew through their branches.
We didn't speak much, I was to focused on trying to walk straight but more so by rainbow dashes body being in such close proximity to my own. Her wings felt strong as they beat gently only a few inches behind my back and her body was warm and soft but firm at the same time. Her hoof held on tight to my hand on the other side of her shoulder in an attempt to hold me up, and I was sure I was blushing at that moment (thank you darkness).
My mouth was getting dry as i tried to think of something to say to her but not coming up with anything good.
Nice night? no no! that sounded lame even to me, she'd think I was a looser for sure!
"I........I.....like your hair."
The comment hit me out of the blue, did she really just say that? I looked in Rainbow dashes direction as she quickly darted her head off to the right. Was she trying to strike up a conversation like I was trying to? And in the process get embarrassed from what she said?
"She is so so so cute!" I thought to myself quickly thinking of a response.
"Thanks, but its nothing compared to that rainbow you have for a mane and tail." I replied returning my gaze to the path in front of me.
Rainbow dash feeling better about her somewhat dorky complement of my quaffer let out a little giggle and returned her own gaze to the same path as me.
"Oh ya this, I guess you could call it a gift from my old man." She stated with a hint of sadness towards the end that I never did understand.
"You ok?" I asked feeling a bit concerned at her slight drop in mood.
"Oh, ya im fine its just, well........ok this might sound a little silly but, sometimes I get the feeling that I had......... another dad. But whenever I try to remember what that means its all just, blank." Rainbow dash looked at me with a puzzled look as though somehow I could explain it to her.
I searched my thoughts for someway to comfort her quandary but all I could come up with was
"Huh."
"Heh heh, sorry for bringing it up, I told you it was silly." Rainbow dash said looking back down at the dirt path, it felt like she was trying to cast off the subject but I decided to drop it to and give her space on the matter, Celestia knows I also had some parent issues as well (or lack their of) but I could have sworn that I heard her say "daddy" under her breath as the night air breezed past us and we continued on.
We finally reached Ponyville hospital which from what I could see was a lot smaller than the hospitals in Fillydelphia.
It was a modest two story professional looking building with the picture of a red cross for its sign. Rainbow dash and me gimped in through the front doors reviling the waiting lobby.
The walls were painted a lime green color and a long wood bench with green seat cushions stretched from the door along the wall to the receptionist desk.
As we entered a white earth pony mare with a light pink mane looked up from the desk and she quickly darted around to wear we stood.
"Goodness what happened?" The nurse asked, her care giver instincts kicking in.
Rainbow dash continued to hover in place as she took on a look like that of a filly about to tell her mother how she broke a vase.
"Well I was out training when some stuff happened and long story short, I think his...uh what did you call it again?"
"Foot" I told her raising the appendage in question for emphasis.
"Ya that, might be broken" Rainbow dash concluded with a wry smile.
The white nurses face quickly looked like she had heard this story all before and didn't look amused,
"Miss dash!" she stated in a way that said mother might scold said filly after such a lame explanation of how a perfectly good vase was now in pieces on the floor.
"This is not the first time you have come to us with broken this or that, but it is the first that you have brought us somepo-."
She paused for a moment to correct herself.
"Human" I interjected.
"Er human, with an injury that you caused!" the nurse concluded giving Rainbow Dash an un-approving glare.
"Ya it was my bad, sorry to make you work harder nurse Red Heart." Rainbow Dash concluded apologetically.
I decided to jump in to try and save the awkward moment.
"It was my fault ma'am, I wasn't watching wear I was going." I explained to the mare.
"Uh huh" nurse Red heart replied obviously not buying it. She then trotted over to the reception desk and pulled out a clip board with a slip of paper and a pen before trotting back over to wear me and my companion stood.
"Well anyway, Ill just need to get some basic information from you and then I can take a look at your hoof, oh I mean your foot."
She pulled the pen from the clip board and prepared to wright. "Ok your name please." She asked in a slightly more chipper tone than before.
"Its Cain ma'am", she jotted the information down quickly before looking back at me.
"Age please"
"Im twenty" I replied trying not to think about how much my foot actually hurt.
The questions continued as nurse Red heart continued to scribble down the information I gave her, ranging from hight, birth date, address and so on. When she had finally concluded her questions she then turned her attention to Rainbow dash.
"Allright then, miss Dash, all I need now is for you to sign next to the X at the bottom."
Rainbow Dash looked slightly taken back by what the nurse was requesting of her.
"Huh, why do you need me to sign?" she asked.
Nursed Red heart rolled her eyes a bit at what she thought should be obvious.
"You brought him in miss Dash, that means your responsible for him. Its just standard procedure." Nurse Red heart explained giving her bit of a glare.
"Oh, ok then" Rainbow dash responded with a bit of a smile. Nurse Read heart passed the clip board and pen in Rainbow dashes direction and.
"Could you get that for me please?" Rainbow dash asked realizing that both her hoofs were full. I took the board and pen from the nurse and held the pen up to Rainbow dashes mouth for her to take.
Her delicate lips parted and she leaned forward gently grasping the righting utensil between her teeth, being so close I could see just how soft and delicate her lips really looked, and her hair gently brushed past my cheek giving me another whiff of fresh, sweet sumer rain.
"Fanksh", she mumbled through the pen between her teeth. I held the board up to her and she quickly scratched down her name next to the indicated X before I passed the board back to the white mare standing before us.
"Very good, Mr. Cain if you would like to have a seat Ill be right back with a wheel chair so I can take you to get examined."
Nurse Red heart gave a quick smile before she cantered off down the hall.
Rainbow dash helped me over to the bench and dropped down slowly as I sat on one of the green cushions. She then took a seat next to me and a silence soon washed over the waiting room.
"Sorry again about, you know what happened." Rainbow dash said apologetically rubbing her foreleg with the other and looking at the floor with a sad expression.
"I told you not to worry about it, accidents will happen." I looked over at her but she didn't look up, she seemed tough but I could tell that deep down she had a lot of emotion just waiting to be let out.
"I may not look it but I am pretty tough you know, one little crash from a pretty pegasus won't keep me down long." Celestias hoof! did I just blurt out that I thought that she was pretty? (well to be fair "gorgeous" was more accurate)
Rainbow dashes cheeks flashed a light shade of pink and she quickly looked over at me with a slightly shocked look on her face, her mouth partly open.
"We-well I-I guess next time Ill just have to try harder then wont I? heh heh." she blurted out bringing a hoof to the back of her head in an attempt to look cool.
So hoofing cute.
Nurse Red heart returned a few minutes latter pushing a wheel chair with her forelegs and placed it next to where I sat on the bench. Rainbow dash got onto her hoofs and held out a foreleg to help me maneuver into the chair, I held onto her hoof and found that she was in fact very strong as she had no trouble at all helping to lift me from my seat into my new mode of transportation.
"Thanks for the help Rainbow dash." I said looking over at the blue mare to my left.
"Oh don't mention it, it was the least I could do after what happened right?" Rainbow dash looked up at me with her rose colored eyes and in them I saw something that I had never seen in a pony that ever looked at me.
They weren't filled with fear or hate or a sense of caution like one might show to a potential threat. But instead they were filled with concern and a happy glimmer. I wanted to hold that look in my memory forever, so that I could look back on it when times were dark or sad.
But like all good things it came to an end as nurse Red heart began to wheel me back to the hallway that no doubt led to the exam room. She stopped when we reached the reception desk and she trotted behind it to retrieve another form. I turned the chair to my right and looked over to the door expecting to see Rainbow Dash as she was leaving. But instead I beheld as I saw her siting on her haunches in the middle of the room, a sheepish smile on her face and now a sad look had come to her rose colored eyes. She almost looked like a little puppy watching as her owner left for work, and it pained me in a way I didn't understand at the time.
"Hay come on, don't look like that. I told you I'm fine, You should get home, its getting late. Thanks again Rainbow dash." I said trying to distract her from the blues she looked to be feeling. Her eyes kept the somber appearance but she nodded her head slowly and looked down at the floor tiles.
I was about to turn my chair back towards the hall when suddenly she called out.
"Cain?"
I quickly looked back over to the sky blue pegasus to see her eyes had regained their happy sparkle and her smile had widened more.
"Ya?" I replied a little taken aback to hear her say my name out loud.
"You can call me Rainbow." she stated widening her smile a little more.
What? did I hear that right? did she just give me, a human who ponies usually feared, spat on, or avoided like the plague, permission to call her by her first name?
"Ill remember that" was all I could think to say.
Nurse Red heart returned with a slip of paper held between her teeth and she began to push the chair off down the hall.
Good bye Rainbow, was what I thought as the space between us grew wider. It was better this way, living in a small town would only cause trouble for her if she were seen with a human, and I couldn't bear to see a sweet mare like her go through the same loneliness and ostracization that I had.
We were after all, humans I mean, the most unlovable and evil creatures in all of equestria.
Nurse Red heart and I finally made it into the small exam room at the end of the hall and I proceeded to remove the shoe (custom made of course) on my now swollen foot.
"Ok mr. Cain just relax and well see what the damage is, so to speak. Luckily I happen to have studied some human anatomy in my last year of university."
She let out a small giggle and raised my foot to get a better look at it.
"Im in your lovely care my good lady." I said turning on the charm. Just because I wasn't popular with mares didn't mean that I didn't know how to flatter them when the mood struck me. Now if only I could have used it more on Rainbow Dash, Oh, I mean Rainbow. But their was something about her that made me want to do more than just lay on cornball lines in an attempt to strike up a conversation.
But what did it matter now right? She was gone and hopefully she had done herself a favor and forgotten about me, but I knew for a fact that I would never forget her.
It turned out that my foot wasn't broken but a couple of toes were, thank goodness. Waiting on a busted foot to heal would greatly slow down my search for a new job and my inheritance wouldn't last forever.
Nurse Red heart bandaged up my toes after "re aligning" them in the most excruciating way possible and told me that shed like for me to stay overnight so that she could check on it in the morning. I begrudgingly accepted after much scowling from her.
"Ok then, before I take you to your room Ill give you some herbs for the pain." she said with more than a hint of exhaustion in her voice, she must have been working all day and would probably be at it tell morning from what she said about looking at my foot then.
She turned away from where I sat facing her and propped herself up on her back hoofs as she rummaged through a medicine cabinet on the wall. My eyes slowly drifted from where she was busy looking for the herb down her curved white back down to the red cross she had as her cutie mark and rested squarely on her rump which was sticking out as she leaned against the wall.
Her light pink tail curved outward slightly and from my sideways angle I caught just enough of a glimpse of her tight puckered anus. It was a light pink color and blended in almost perfectly with her white coat, I found that my foot didnt hurt so much any more but my jeans were starting to get tighter around my waist.
Her flank swayed from side to side and her pink tail followed like it was waving at me to touch the delights within. just then Nurse Red hearts shapely butt was replaced by one that was cyan blue and was accented by a rainbow tail. but this rump was a little smaller and much more toned and had shapely athletic legs connected to it. like an echo I heard Rainbows voice in my head, she was saying my name like she had before but this time it was with a sound of lust and urgency, as if she was begging for me to bend her over and take her.
"Ok hear we go," Nurse Red heart said spinning around and making me have a mini heart attack. I tried to regain my composure as she approached me with a blue bottle in her hoof.
"Are you all right mr. Cain? your all red."
Im sure that I was, after what I had just imagined.
"Oh! yes, I'm fine, just a little tired I guess, it has been a long day." I looked away from her in fear that she would be able to see what I had been thinking if she looked into my eyes.
"Well just take some of this and Ill get you all settled in for the night ok?"
I swallowed hard on the horrible tasting herb trying not to gag on it as I chocked it down. Afterward nurse Red heart wheeled me up to the second floor and into one of the patient rooms, their were two beds and not much else.
Nurse Red heart produced a large green hospital gown that looked more like a curtain than a gown (since their were mostly only ones for ponies) and stepped out of the room while I got changed. She then helped me into bed and turned off the lights as she left.
"Sleep well mr. Cain" she said in a warm tone.
"Thanks for all the help ma'am." Nurse Red heart flashed me a sweet smile before shutting the door and trotting off down the hall.
Alone now in the dark and silence of my hospital room I closed my eyes and awaited sleep to come but found that instead of the darkness behind my eyelids, all I could see was Rainbow smiling back at me, not a bad way to fall asleep.
PRESENT DAY
Nurse Red heart woke me up bright and early the next morning and I sat up groggily pushing back the hospital sheets from my upper body.
"Sleep well mr. Cain?" nurse Red heart asked sounding more tired than last night, I couldn't help but admire her devotion and fortitude, being a cook I knew a thing or two about working crazy hours.
"I did, thank you" I stated in reply even though I had some rainbow colored trouble falling asleep. Nurse Red heart asked me to take a few steps to see if I was able to walk properly.
I was in fact able to walk more straight today even though my toes still hurt a little bit.
"Well then mr. Cain, your free to go but don't hesitate to come back if you should have any other troubles, oh and hears some more herbs for any pain you may still have."
She passed me a small blue bottle containing the bad tasting prescription and I took it cringing at the thought of taking another dose of the terrible stuff.
"Thank you so much for all your help ma'am, sorry to trouble you."
Nurse Red heart gave me a tired smile and waved a hoof dismissively.
"Its no trouble at all it is my calling, and actually you were the last patient I had to take care of so now I'm off." She stated with another smile.
After my farewell to nurse Red heart I got dressed in my street clothes and began to slowly make my way down the hall toward the stairs. I wondered if Rainbow had made it home alright but realized that I wasn't back on the mean streets of fillydelphia.
With some small difficulty I was able to negotiate the stairs and started toward the lobby I had come in through the night before. I would have loved to talk to Rainbow more and find out more about her but like I said this was for the better.
She had shown me things that no pony had ever before, kindness, caring, and most of all her smile. I would never forget that for one brief moment somepony had cared.
But despite my affirmation about how this was for the best, why did I feel so bad about it? It was like when I left my old apartment in filly, it was sad to have to leave but at the same time it was something I had to do.
Why did I always feel the need to do the right thing at the expense of my own feelings? Why couldn't I just be selfish and take what I wanted?
Enough of that Cain, today is a new day and I have a new life to start and I can't be getting down about my emotional hang ups, and I certainly can't let myself get distracted by some kamikaze rainbow peg...a...sus.
The lobby had the morning sunlight beaming in through the glass windows shining on the form of a cyan blue pegasus pony with a rainbow main and tail and a cloud with a rainbow lightning bolt as its cutie mark. The pony was sitting on its haunches leaning back against the wall as it slept with a look of content on its face.
Rainbow? what was she doing hear? wait, theirs no way that she slept hear last night waiting for me is their?
I slowly walked up to her sleeping form at the bench and crouched down on one knee in front of her.
Her chest slowly rose and fell in time with her soft breathing. She looked so peaceful and at that moment of just us two I wanted to reach out and touch her coat.
Feel the soft texture of her plush blue coat against my fingers but being the gentleman that I am I decided not to.
Then I thought to perhaps just leave her sleeping and go home but something told me that wouldn't be very nice. Maybe it was my curiosity at why she was asleep in the hospital she had brought me to. But the other half of me was just happy to see her again and wanted to talk to her some more.
I reached out and lightly took hold of her shoulder giving it a gentle shake.
"Rainbow.....Rainbow wake up."
Rainbow began to stir on the bench and I scooted back a few inches.
"Uhhh...ummm... five more minutes." she mumbled opening her eyes only a crack before she shifted to her side.
All of a suden her eyes shot open and she swiftly shifted her head right at me a happy sparkle soon enveloping them.
"Cain! are you ok hows your hoof? or foot I mean."
Was she really that worried about me?
"Its fine, thanks for asking, just a flesh wound really." I said with a smile in reply, Rainbow hoped onto her hoofs and returned my smile with one of her own.
"Glad to hear it, guess you really are a tough one huh?"
I took on a bit more of a serious look as I asked the question that was tapping at me.
"Rainbow, why are you hear? you didn't sleep hear last night did you?"
Rainbow looked at me like I had just asked her who princess Celestia was and her face turned a light red.
"W-well, nurse Red heart did say last night that I was responsible for you right? I wouldn't leave you hanging after agreeing to that."
It sounded like a silly sentiment but it was one born from a good heart, I shouldn't have expected anything less from her.
"Sooooo since your good to go maybe I can walk you home? if thats cool with you that is." Rainbow asked with a shy sort of inflection.
"Id like that very much, if thats cool with you, that is" I replied with a bit of sarcasm.
We shared a short laugh before taking to our feet and hoofs and walking outside the hospital to greet the sunny day before us.
I looked down at Rainbow and she looked up at me her eyes closed and a big smile across her cheeks that brought one to my own before we began our walk back to ponyville proper.
The streets of ponyville were alive with ponies going about their day in the early spring as me and Rainbow made our way to my home. Rainbow hovered next to me as I recalled the directions back to my humble abode. But I soon took notice that Rainbow seemed a bit uncomfortable as we passed the other ponies on the street.
"Hay uh, Cain?" Rainbow said with an inquisitive tone.
"Whats up, you ok?" I asked looking to my left at her as her eyes darted around at the other ponies.
"Do I have something stuck to my face?" She asked turning her face toward mine for me to inspect.
"Nope, why do you ask?"
"Well, maybe its just my imagination, but it feels like everypony is staring at me." I couldn't help but laugh a little at her innocence, but after she gave me an irritated look I told her.
"Their not staring at you Rainbow, their staring at me." I explained in a mater of fact way.
"But why, are humans so rare that everypony stares at you like that?"
I gazed down at the ground and knew that sooner or latter shed either find out or I would have to tell her myself so I decided on the latter dreading what that could mean for me and my newly acquired friend.
"Ill tell you when we get to my place Rainbow."I stated in a serious tone that Rainbow must have picked up on. We walked for a little bit before Rainbow broke the silence.
"Soooooo, if you dont mind me asking what did you do for a living in Fillydelphia? Her inflection perked up as she asked.
"Well, I worked as a cook at a couple of restraints actually."
Rainbows face lit up instantly at my reply her wings fluttering slightly faster than before.
"Really you can cook? Thats awesome! What can you make?" Rainbow's barrage of questions kind of shocked me, it wasn't that big of a deal to call it "awesome" but I humored her anyway.
"I can make a vegetable wrap with sautéed carrots fried rice and roasted red peppers that I think is-."
Just then a loud grumble came from the pit of Rainbows taunt stomach region that broke my train of thought and made Rainbows face turn three shades of red in a heartbeat.
"Uhhh, sorry, guess I haven't eaten at all today, heh heh" Rainbow rubbed the back of her head with a hoof giving me a sheepish smile and rubbing her stomach with the other hoof. I took the roaring of her stomach as a great complement and decided to reward her by offering the blue pegasus something to eat.
"Tell you what, show me where the market is and Ill make you lunch"
Rainbow beamed me a smile and took my hand in her hoof dashing off down the street at a speed I almost couldn't keep up with. Those herbs didn't sound so bad now.
We came to the market and I almost fell over when Rainbow came to an abrupt halt. The market was without a doubt the most charming one I had ever seen. Much more peaceful than the crowded super markets back in fill, it felt more like a farmers market than anything with fresh fruits and vegetable stands as well as home goods such as cookware as well as hoof made dishes and stuff.
Shopping around with Rainbow was like a dream I had always had, we laughed and talked like we were old friends getting re acquainted, I didn't even notice the other ponies stares as we made our way from the different stands. I wondered if this was what it was like to be on a date, having never known the act myself.
We finished our shopping after I had an adequate amount of ingredients and cookware needed to prepare our lunch, it hadnt even cost me forty bits for all the stuff I had bought although I had to relinquish a small hand full to one stand owner who asked for six bits in exchange for two tomatoes and I had to hold off Rainbow before she was able to pummel the stand owner for demanding such a steep cost but lets face it calling Rainbow a "loudmouth tomboy" was going a bit far.
Once I was able to calm down Rainbow, we gathered the bags and made the short walk back to my house.
once we were at the front door I placed the bags I was holding and put my hand on the firm wood door. Rainbow hovered behind me with, im sure a puzzled look on her face.
"Hay sorry, I know I said that Id be back soon but some stuff happened, don't worry though Im ok." I said softly to the silent building.
"Cain, what in Equestria are you doing?" Rainbow asked raising an eye brow at my strange custom.
"Heh, sorry, old habit I guess." I pulled my key from my pocket and unlocked the door before grabbing my bags and letting myself in and stepping to the side to let Rainbow float through the entrance.
"I know its not much but welcome anyways." Rainbow took a few looks around the modest room before she turned to me with an approving smile.
"Nice place ya got hear, so tell me, had any mares over yet?" She asked with a sly grin and a nudge of her hoof to my arm.
"Actually your the first" I responded in a tone that said that I had no idea what she was talking about.
She was so easy to tease. Right after I told her that her face burned bright pink and she began to fumble with a response.
"W-w-well this is my first time for me to......I -I-I mean this is the first time, you know being in a guys house and all."
She began to draw circles on the floor with a hoof and at that moment I really wanted to hug her and tell her that she didn't have to act tough with me. But I had something to tell her, something that would probably mean that I would be eating lunch alone today as usual. I took a seat on the couch before looking over at Rainbow still drawing circles with her hoof.
"Hay Rainbow, theirs something I need to talk to you about can you sit down for a second?" Rainbow looked up at me with a small amount of worry in her eyes like she was about to get some bad news.
"Oh ya, ok" she said flapping her wings to pick herself up off the floor and positioning herself over the chair to my left before dropping into it with a flop.
"Whats up is everything ok?" she asked in a way that implied she knew everything was not ok. Not being one to beat around the bush I decided to get right to the point.
"Rainbow, I don't think you should hang around me anymore." The ten words that came out of my mouth hurt like pulling a fish hook out of my tong, but not as much as the look she gave me after I was done saying them.
She looked like somepony had just told her that her cat died and I should have expected the question that followed.
"What, but why?" she asked with a hurt tone that stung me to my core.
"Rainbow look at me, I'm different, you saw how everypony in town was looking." Rainbow now took on a defensive glare narrowing her eyes at me a little.
"Ya so? your a human, I get that their aren't many of you around, but so what they'll get used to it, I mean may-"
"Rainbow, its not because I'm rare it's because of what I am." I sighed deep before I continued on.
"Not all ponies know this but manny do and the ones that don't have heard stories about it, long ago humans did terrible things to ponies." Rainbow looked at me wearily, almost as if she was scared to hear more.
"What do you mean terrible things?" she asked with a bit of hesitation.
I looked down at my hands and recalled the history that my ancestors had seen fit to curse me with.
"They made slaves of them Rainbow, beat them, whipped them, slaughtered them, took their foals and made them watch as they were sold and branded, cursed to live as slaves just like their parents. That is why they look at me funny, sure some of them just think I'm strange looking but most of them know what my ancestors did and they see that in me too."
I couldn't bring myself to look at Rainbow for fear that the look in her eyes would now see me as the monster everypony else did.
"Thats why you shouldn't hang around me, your a really nice mare, and Im grateful for all that you've done for me. But I cant ask you to become an outcast for my sake."
A long pause settled between us as I continued to stare down at my hands.
"Ill understand if you want to leave now." Almost as soon as I finished saying the last word I heard Rainbow flap her wings as she lifted off the chair she had been sitting in, I expected for her to flutter her way to the front door but was surprised when a soft warm body touched down next to me on the couch and a hoof gently rested on my hand.
I looked up to see rainbows face a few inches away from my own, her rosy eyes had a glimmer to them like she had been on the verge of tears and a warm smile stretched from ear to ear.
"You know Cain, you can be kinda dumb sometimes." I couldnt say anything, all I could do was stare blankly into the eyes of the beautiful mare that sat next to me.
"Cain, I told you when we met yesterday, I like you. I can tell that your a really nice guy, and I don't care about what humans did a thousand or so years ago, and even if I did your not like them." Rainbow squeezed my hand with her hoof and it felt like the rainbow colors of her mane were the first colors I had ever seen in my life.
"Your my friend, and I would never leave my friends hanging." Rainbow concluded with the same warm smile.
If I had never left filly I may have never met a more amazing and beautiful pony in all my life.
Unable to hold back the flood gates of emotion any longer I garbed the pony next to me and wrapped her in a tight hug.
Rainbow while hesitant at first soon opened her forelegs and returned the gesture patting the back of my head with a gentle hoof.
Tears fell from my eyes into her rainbow mane and we stayed like that for what felt like an eternity.
Until something that sounded like a manticores growl came from now my stomach and disturbed the tender moment between me and my new found........friend? yes friend.
We broke our hug and Rainbow looked at me with a big goofy smile, and I'm sure that I had one of my own.
"Hows about that lunch mr. professional chef?" Rainbow asked poking my stomach with a hoof.
"Coming right up miss. kamikaze rainbow." I replied with a sarcastic tone.
Me and rainbow got off the couch and I started making my first, "lunch with a friend"
