Dont stop

I quickly got to work on mine and Rainbows afternoon lunch after I orientated myself to my new kitchen. The water worked as well as the gas to the stove and with some help from Rainbow I was in the zone.

"So whatcha gona make?" Rainbow asked as she hovered behind me looking over my shoulder.

"You should never ask, it ruins the surprise." I explained wanting to leave her in suspense.

"Well your no fun" Rainbow stated dejectedly while she hovered over to the counter and began placing the various items on the counter.

I decided on a vegetable stir fry and twice baked potatoes with melted cheese. My hands quickly went to work every movement from memory my blade sang as I chopped faster than you could blink. Whole vegetables were soon transformed into wedged slices and were thrown into the pan on the oven, they sizzled as they cooked soon filling the house with the smell of soy sauce and spices.

Less than an hour latter the potatoes were coming out of the oven, the cheese on top melted just right. I placed the veggies and potatoes on two separate plates with forks and two glasses of lemonade I prepared from scratch and brought it over to Rainbow who was sitting on the couch watching with anticipation as I brought lunch over.

She had a big grin on her face and her eyes told me just how hungry she actually was.

"So what are we having?" Rainbow asked clapping her hooves together in excitement.

I smiled at her enthusiasm at eating one of my most common dishes. brushing a few loose strands of my hair away from my face and behind my ear, I set Rainbows plate and cup down on the coffee table in front of her.

"Stir fry and twice baked potatoes with lemonade." I explained like it was no big deal.

"Dig in" I said feeling a bit nervous about what she would think of it. She was my first real friend, could you blame me for wanting to impress her with the only thing that I was really good at?

Rainbow quickly picked up her fork and skewered some of the sautéed veggies on her plate before they disappeared into her mouth and she began to chew slowly.

Her eyes widened as she finished chewing and swallowed her mouthful. She placed her fork down on the plate and slowley looked over at me her eyes still wide with a blank stare. She proceeded to smush her cheeks together with her hooves and smiled wide.

"This........is.........so...........GOOD!" she cheered before picking up her fork again and proceeding to scarf down her plate like a timber wolf.

"Glad you like it" I said before returning back to my own plate.

We passed the time with idle conversation as we ate. Rainbow told me about how she wanted to one day become a member of the wonder bolts which didn't shock me at all, I thought that if any pegasus could do it, it was her

"Hay Rainbow, if you dont mind me asking, do you have any other friends that live in town?" I figured that since Rainbow was such a nice pony then she must have friends that are just as nice.

Rainbow paused from her ravenous eating and looked over at me like I had just asked her the million bit question.

"What are you kidding? I have five of the best friends any pony could have, Id introduce you to them but their all out of town right now." Rainbow gazed up as if to recite to herself the whereabouts of her five absent friends.

"Lets see, Rarity is at a fashion convention in trotingham, Apple jack is attending a rodeo out west, Pinky pie is at a cake show, Fluttershy is watching some boring butterfly migration, and Twilight, she's ..............uh" Rainbow trailed off her eyes now looking down and her blue coat seemed to darken slightly at the mention of this "Twilight" pony.

"Is everything ok?" I asked concerned at Rainbows sudden drop in mood.

"Eyy yeah, shes in canterlot on I guess you could call it "work stuff" Rainbow started rubbing her foreleg with a hoof and it wasnt hard at all to see that somthing about this pony was bothering her.

"Rainbow, talk to me, did you two have a fight?" I asked trying to get her to open up.

"Oh no! its well...........lets just say she went through some, "changes" I guess, and now Im not so sure that she's still the same pony that I was friends with, or.... I dont know." Rainbow moved to face the table in front of us, she picked up her fork and began to push the remaining vegetables around all while looking like a pony who was down in the dumps, her mane seemed to deflate as she looked down at the plate in front of her with a big frown.

Ok Cain! friend time! I need to do all I can to help Rainbow feel better about her friend and make her smile again.

"Well, did she turn into a minotaur?" I asked

"Nooooo" Rainbow replied.

"A cockatrice?" I asked.

"Uh, no" Rainbow replied like that should be obvious.

"Do you still love her as a friend?"

"Well ya of course I do." Rainbow replied looking back up at me now.

"Then theirs no problem. Ponies change Rainbow, its just part of life. If your friends going through some changes than I bet shes glad to have a good friend like you to help her through it." Rainbow looked like I had just told her the answer to an age old riddle as her cheeks flashed just a bit of red and she turned her head back to her plate in embarrassment.

"Im glad to" Rainbow whispered while picking up her glass and rolling it between her hooves.

"Pardon?" I asked.

"Im glad to have a good friend like you to help me" Rainbow said at a regular talking volume refusing to take her eyes off of her half full glass of lemonade.

"Dont mention it" I said returning to my own plate. Rainbow glanced over at me out of the corner of her eye, every time with a soft smile from cheek to cheek.

OPERATION:MAKE RAINBOW SMILE.

We finished our lunch after Rainbow had killed off another two plates of stir fry and the last of the potatoes. After which she flopped backwards onto the couch rubbing her stomach with a hoof and sighing deeply in satisfaction.

"I couldent eat another bite." Rainbow stated, a look of satisfaction on her face.

"Good because their isn't a single bite left" I explained with more than a hint of playful sarcasm as I got up and took our dishes to the sink.

"Hey! are you calling me fat? Rainbow demanded in a defensive tone.

"Wouldn't dream of it, captain Rainbow dash, future leader of the wonder bolts." Rainbow scrunched her nose up in what I think was the cutest look of anger I had ever seen.

"You just watch your step buster or next time your foot won't be the only thing that gets busted." Rainbow now said with a playful anger that made me smile.

"Ma'am yes ma'am!" I sounded off throwing up a salute and coming to attention.

Me and Rainbow started laughing and for some reason I could have sworn that this was perhaps one of the best days of my life.

The sun was starting to set outside when Rainbow said she had to get going, I stood outside the door to see Rainbow off.

"Thanks again for the meal Cain" Rainbow said whilst she hovered before me.

"Dont mention it Rainbow, next time ill make enough to feed ten ponies."

"Ha ha very funny mr. wise guy, just count yourself lucky that you have an awesome pony like me to keep you on your A game." Rainbow stated puffing her chest out with pride.

"And I thank you for that Rainbow."

"Heh heh well, Ill come visit you again, maybe ill even let you help me train sometime." Rainbow offered giving me a light jab in the arm with her hoof.

"Sounds like fun" I said with a smile.

Rainbow finished her farewell before zooming off into the distance leaving a trail of rainbow vapor behind her as she left.
I slept that night better than any other night that I could remember for a long time.

The days that followed were more fun than I could describe. I helped Rainbow train as she had promised, I watched her as she flew around, going over her routines like a well rehearsed performer but more cool. I helped motivate her as she went about her exercise routine doing wing ups and sit ups. The rest of the time consisted of me and her going for walks or sitting around talking about this or that. Turns out that Rainbow loved Daring do books almost as much as I did, like me she had read all the ones in the series and we went on for hours talking about how cool it was when Daring flew over that exploding zeppelin and landed just in time to catch the ruby horn and save the damsel in distress just before she plummeted to her doom.

It was all so happy, I was doing something that I had wanted to do since I was a little boy, spend time with a friend.

One day Rainbow said that she was going on a "training adventure" witch apparently consisted of her flying to the top of a mountain and doing as manny exercises as possible as fast as possible all at a very high altitude.

I respectfully declined going along.

"Ill come by latter that day and hang out ok?" Rainbow offered

"Thats ok, you should rest after your done with your suicide mission" I said rolling my eyes toward the end.

"Training adventure!" Rainbow shot back in frustration stomping her hoof on the ground like a little filly.

She's so cute when she's mad.

The truth was that that day was a day that I didn't care for very much and was used to spending alone.

My birthday.

The day started out quiet as usual, every so often I would look up at the clock and wonder how Rainbow was doing on top of her mountain. I could just see her now and it was really cool, Rainbow at the tip of a mountain dark clouds all round while fierce winds and snow whipped around her as she did wing ups with a fierce look in her eyes and bearing her teeth as if to challenge the windigos themselves.

I had just made myself a cup of tea and saw that it was a little past noon when I sat down contemplating taking an afternoon nap, not like I was doing anything better right?

Out of nowhere a tap came at the door, I got up thinking that it must be that wall eyed pegasus mail pony to apologize for breaking my mail box with her spastic flying again, I think that Rainbow had said that her name was dopey or dippy or derpy I think.

I opened the door and almost dropped my mug of tea as I took in the form of a cyan blue pegasus pony with a rainbow mane on my doorstep.

"Rainbow?!"

"Thats my name don't where it out" she stated with a sashay of her tail.

"But I thought you were going on a training thing" I asked stepping back as she hovered up into the air and moved inside the house shutting the door behind her.

"paaalease Cain, Im Rainbow dash I finished that up almost an hour ago, why? aren't you happy to see me?" she asked looking a bit dejected.

"Well, ya of course, but I thought I told you that you didn't have to come over today so you could rest after your thing." I retorted still a little taken aback.

"Training adventure!" She deadpanned giving me a look.

"Besides there's no way that I wasn't going to hang out with you on your birthday, duuuh" The last sentence left me speechless.

"B-b-b-but how did you even know it was my birthday today?" I asked as I stumbled over my words. Rainbow gave a little smile while rolling her eyes at me.

"You told it to nurse Red heart at the hospital remember lunkhead." Oh ya now I remember guess that at the time I didn't think that Rainbow would be a part of my life today, or that she would remember such a small thing.

"But-but-but" was all I could get out before Rainbow continued.

"Enough buts, its gift time, now, close your eyes and hold out your hand."

"But I" once again.

"Do it" Rainbow shot back. So realizing that I wasn't going to win I reluctantly closed my eyes and held out my hand as instructed.

Rainbow placed one of her hooves on the under side of my hand while placing something that felt smooth and cool into my palm.

"Ok open them" she instructed.

I opened my eyes and looked down into my palm and what I saw left me speechless.

It looked like a long Crystal but in its core it looked like a small spark was trapped inside whilst a small flash went off like an erratic heart beat.

"Do you like it? I got it when I was in the crystal empire last, they call it a thunder crystal, I guess its made when thunder strikes a magically enchanted crystal or something, sooooo what do you think?"

I was at a loss for words, it was so beautiful the way the spark inside emanated through the clear crystal and the low flash flared in irregular intervals, it truly looked like thunder and lightning were trapped inside.

"Oh Rainbow, I....I........I just don't know what to say" I could feel the lump in my throat begin to move up to my eyes threatening to turn into tears of joy.

"Say thank you duhhh uh" Rainbow didnt finish her statement, for as she was about to her eyes became wonkey and her wings gave way as she began to fall to the floor.

I darted,throwing my arms out to catch her just before she made contact with the floor.
I caught her in my arms sliding on my knees in the process.

"Rainbow! are you ok?!"

"Uhhhhh, ya, I must have just pushed myself a little to hard today I guess" she sounded like she had just woke up to a bad hang over from some hard cider.

"Silly filly I told you to rest didnt I?!" I scolded her while feeling that she was very warm.

"Im fine mom, I just got a little dizzy is all" she said.

"Maybe you should rest a little" I offered whilst still on my knees.

"But I was going to take you for cake at sugar cube corner" she whined wiggling a bit in my arms.

"That can wait, right now you need rest" I insisted giving her a stern look.

"ye-yeah ok, Ill just lay on the couch for a while."

I stood up with her still in my arms like a little filly but she soon began to squirm around weekly as I stood.

"Im not a foal I can walk ten steps to the couch Cain" she whined trying futile to wiggle her way out of my grasp.

"You can hardly walk, and im not taking you to the couch im laying you down in my bed" I insisted making my way to the bed room.

"You can be such a jerk sometimes Cain, you pervert" her whining sounded adorable in her tired tone but despite her complaints she was soon nuzzling her head into my chest and making sounds of comfort.

I placed her gently on the the soft quilt with a pillow under her head. She rolled over onto her side facing wear I sat.
She looked so peaceful laying their with her rainbow mane laying loosely over her face and neck.

I found my white throw blanket and gently covered her up to her chest. sitting on the edge of the bed next to her, I looked at her more, she was so beautiful to see.

I reached down moving the loose strands of her mane out of her face but I couldn't stop their, I reached up and ran my fingers through her soft silky mane and couldn't help but smile at how good it felt. I continued on for a minuet more but stoped and withdrew my hand.

Rainbow was asleep and if I remembered correctly she didn't like ponies touching her mane.

I sat up and was about to leave the room to let her sleep when two sets of hooves reached out and garbed my hand.

"Noooooo, dont stop that feels good" Rainbow whined, sounding like a cute little filly that wanted a treat.

"But I thought that you didn't like ponies touching your mane" I whispered down to her as I sat on the edge next to her again.

"But your not a pony, so just shut up and do it Cain" she whined sleepily.

I resumed my stroking of her soft mane as Rainbow made little sounds of contentment and what sounded almost like little purrs from a kitten.

I wanted to sit their and pet her forever.

Once I saw that she was breathing steadily I drew back my hand and stood up to leave. I took one last look down at her happy sleeping form and just couldn't help myself anymore, I slowly bent down and planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. Her coat was soft and felt like silk fur, she didn't move at all.

I left the room and went into the kitchen, If I knew Rainbow, I knew that she would be hungry as a hound dog when she finaly woke up, so dinner it was.

With a kitchen knife in both hands I crossed my arms over my chest gazing with an evil smirk at the assortment of fruits that lay on the counter in front of me, I felt the thunder shard in my pant pocket and felt comfort having it so close to me. My evil smirk turned into an evil grin and I eyed my fruity prey.

"Any last words?" I whispered to the fruits.
