Chapters Dusk of Peace
Chapter 1
"A fierce heat swept
the land and with
it, went long kept
peace."
"People of Equinorve!" called King Valiant, his iron crown shining in the summer's sun.
"The time has come, to prove once and for all which kingdom truly deserves to be one among equals!"
The crowd of the Bleak Coliseum roared with frenzied excitement. Ponies from all the kingdoms had come to witness this mighty spectacle. There had not been a inter-kingdom battle in almost seventy years. Even though, this battle was sanctioned by all leaders of the five kingdoms.
King Valiant posed regally as he watched over the thousands of spectators, come to watch the bloody conflict. Inside the coliseum's preparation rooms, the mood was much more grim and all the more tense. The kingdom warriors pace the rooms, knowing all too well the chance of death was high.
Hailing from the five great kingdoms were each five warriors. A few standing out more than the others. Of those ponies were the mage prodigy, Omni. Known for his temper and arcane prowess. He hailed from the kingdom of Dalinix.
Also present was the eneregetic, and perhaps foolhardy, uprising champion of Ralentald, Stormhoof. The inseperatable twins Gamer Masquerade and Game Chaser, both from Tridonstris. Among the twins, and the warriors of Tridonstris was the tribal raised pony Thunder Runner and the reknowned defense magic user, Crystal Charmer.
The most odd one out was perhaps, Chromacia. The princess of Fornestria was a very capable magic user and a talented practitioner of forest magic. However, those of Fornestria were usually not inclined to fighting, which made it hard to believe that Fornestria had even sent warriors.
They all watched each other, examining the others for weaknesses to exploit. All of them had a feeling of fear, even if they were brave there was a trace. Each of them prepared, mentally and physically, awaiting the battle that would soon be at hand.
All at once King Valiant's words rang through the preparation rooms.
"Now, without any further delay, let us begin the battle!"
On cue the ponies trotted to the large, rusted doors that led to their battlefield. They could hear the muffled cheers of the thousands of ponies that would be watching them. A gut-wrenching squeal of metal sounded and the doors slowly moved open. The cheers rippled into the preparation room and light flooded in.
As they came onto the field they seperated into groups accordingly.
"The warriors of the hour! The five great kingdoms have sent them for their glory and proving!" Valiant called.
Each group of warriors took an area of the coliseum. The Tridonstrian warriors took the south, Dalinix to the east, Avextrix on the west, Fornestria to the north, and Ralentald in the center. The warriors were distinguished by their standards.
The Avextrixians wore their standards on the cloth draped on their backs. The iconic diamond star upon the horizon. The Dalinites wore silver circlets with the pentagram star that bore a dark purple hue. Ralentaldens wore bronze neck pieces that were engraved with the hammers and anvil of smiths. Tridonstrians with their iron anklets that bore the Dragon's Trident amid crashing waves. The Fornestrians wore amulets with the oval crest containing the Spirit of the World.
"Fight well young warriors! This is for the glory of your people!" Valiant called, and tense silence gripped the coliseum.
"Avnosh!" he shouted the command of attack from old Ralenian.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 2
The rush of combat was immediate. Furious clomping of hooves, and fierce wing beats dominated the battlefield. Spells of many shades and powers flew from magic ponies as they aimed at hostile opponents. Pegasi zoomed at their winged brethren and ground adversaries.
Dodging harmful spells and speeding past his allies, Thunder Runner charged at the Ralentald warrior Clouttail. The Ralentaldian caught a glimpse of the furious earth pony that rushed to him. It was close, but Clouttail barely evaded the raider-raised warrior. Before he could recover Clouttail was knocked backwards with a powerful blow.
Thunder Runner took advantage of Clouttail's daze and ran to trample him. Looking up, all that Clouttail saw was the hooves of his adversary. He was dealt a deadly blow that pounded him to the ground and left him with a gaping head wound. Clouttail was rendered incapacitated.
Meanwhile, the Tridonstrian twins attacked with fatal synchronization. The pegasus brother attacked those that fell victim to the magic pony's spells. They took out Oakenhoof with a well timed dive and a fire spell. Their next opponent was the Avextrian earth pony Blazing Trial.
Game Chaser dove down at the pony while he finished off Mystic Vale. Blazing Trial was caught unaware and was easily knocked to his side. Gamer Masquerade used his magic to debilitate the downed warrior. Trail felt a sheer cold blast him, followed by a vigorous shock. He was struck down by the deadly combination.
With only two warriors left remaining, the Avextrians were quickly overwhelmed, leaving none alive. Ralentald, and Fornestria had three warriors left. Dalinix lost three, but were still holding out well.
Omni focused his attention to Hammerhead, a Ralentald warrior. He covered himself in a magic barrier and sprinted at him. Hammerhead was up for the battle and braced himself, ready to take flight. Omni used his telekinetic abilities to transport himself behind the pegasus pony. He was caught off guard and paid for it with the sting of lightning.
Quickly, he took to the air only to be shot down by a different magic pony. He hit the ground violently and was killed on impact. Omni looked across the battlefield to find the pony that had took his kill. Eyeing him back was Chromacia, already preparing another spell.
Stormhoof regrouped with his remaining ally, Cloud Shield. They aimed for Cherryblossom, a Fornestrian warrior. They took her from both sides. She was only able to dodge Stormhoof and was tackled by Cloud Shield. She was trampled violently and the two came back to the skies.
As Cloud Shield looked for the next victim he was shot down by a great shock of lightning. The fall was long enough to kill him on impact. Stormhoof, outraged, looked at the source of the spell and saw Insighted Mind. Stormhoof dove at him with unnatural speed. The Dalinxian was thrown at the colliseum wall.
The sounds of breaking bones assured Stormhoof that he could end the magic pony easily. He rammed at him while he was still pounded in the wall, which pushed him further in. This strike violently killed him. Blood streamed from his mouth and his form was maliciously twisted.
The remaining warriors found their opponents and ran to strike. All who remained were, Omni, Crystal Charmer, Chromacia, Thunder Runner, Stormhoof, and the twins Game Chaser and Gamer Masquerade. Chromacia and Omni fought each other furiously with spells. Game Chaser combated Stormhoof who effortlessly dodged his brother's spells.
Cheers were blasted and curses spat. The victor would be soon at hand. The warriors fought tooth and nail. The tensity was extreme as the rulers watched with hope. Hope was soon about to run out.
Flash fires took the battlefield, startling all the ponies, spectators, and warriors alike. The fires ringed the battlefield. The warriors stopped their struggles to address the sudden flames. They rose higher and higher as if they were going to engulf the entire coliseum. The rulers watched the fires with fearful awe.
Within the wall of flames, parted an opening that led to pitch black void. The void was soon filled with chaotic purple flames. Within the flames appeared the silhouette of a large pegasus pony. Heavily armored and set afire itself, it strode closer into the coliseum.
The fiery pony stepped forth from the tunnel of purple fire. It's left eye was covered with an eye patch and its helmet bore two long horns. It's eye was pure black and it's mane was blood red flame.
"You are pitiful excuses for warriors." it uttered with a dark voice, clearly male. He looked at the recently violent ponies still posed to fight. He spread out his massive fire coated wings that resembled that of a pheonix. His glare was now fixed on the rulers that were posted on the far balcony.
The gust of wind from his take off sprang sand and dirt several feet.
"So these are the descendants of the first great kings?" he mocked as he approached the honored rulers. "You argue who is stronger and send your younglings to fight for you?! How your ancestors would have condemned you."
He sustained himself in the air and observed them.
"Luckily they aren't here, and seeing that they aren't---"
"You were banished! How are you here?! What foul magics released you from your imprisonment?" asked Lord Plainsstalker.
"Simple, my friend. It says plainly in the Seal of Dalinos. 'Should the peace of the kingdoms dry and become brittle, than our seal shall fail and the world will burn at the hands of the ancient foe, Flameberge.'" he quoted.
"Then the seal has been weakened for quite some time now." Valiant expressed.
"Yes, long enough to allow me to grow influence in the world again. For over twelve years it has weakened and soon it will crumble." he chuckled.
"Not if we can stop it!" declared Plainsstalker
"How do you propose to fix it in time. With the damage you've caused it's not repairable."
King Ashwood came before Flameberge, almost like he was unphased by his presence.
"We are prepared for you Flameberge. We can stop you just as our ancestors did." he claimed boldly.
"Is it truly 'we', Ashwood? Or is it just 'you'?" he pointed out.
"Gentlemen, and ladies I bid you farewell, until we meet again on the thirteenth year."
Flameberge covered himself with his wings and disappeared in a cloak of flame. The of fire dwindled and sputtered out. The portal of purple flame collapsed. The coliseum was returned to it's normal setting.
There was absolute silence. Valiant came to the balcony edge.
"I, hereby, call this battle to an end. There is no victor for a much greater threat has befallen us. Return to your homes and grieve for our fallen warriors. I bid you all 'mayros'."

Chapter 3
"The omen of the
Accursed Purifier
was one of ravenous
infernoes. All that
would consume
the world."
Flameberge. It was a name that hadn't been mentioned for hundreds of years. The sources of his beginnings had been kept in the old tomes of Dalinix. After the encounter with him in the Bleak Coliseum almost four days ago, the mages had been hard at work. Looking for the old knowledge to defeat this foe who almost destroyed the world.
Those warriors who'd survived were sent back to their homes. Home was not the same, now that the presence of evil spread across the world. Ponies had become more skittish and paranoid. Magic ponies could feel a chill of evil at certain times of the day. Pegasi could sense darkness in the air. Earth ponies could tell the surroundings were dying.
With Summer's end fast approaching and Autumn's breeze upon the land, time seemed to fade quickly. It was now late August and soon September would bring the festivities of happiness to a solemn populace. In the meantime the warriors meant to bring glory to their kingdom were put back to their normal duties. What they'd experienced however, would put them on edge; Eager to fight again.
Inside Dalinix's floating fortress mages of all ages and experience studied ancient literature and alien tomes. This sudden increase in anxiety left the Archmage worried. This would seem suspicious to the other kingdoms and possibly a prelude to an attack. She was not the only one with such thoughts.
Ralentald's production of arms increased in response to Flameberge's appearance and an expected fight between him. In Avextrix, patrols became more frequent and trade slowed for worry of invasion and espionage. Tridonstris sent out more galleons to watch the coasts and foreign boats were searched more thoroughly than usual. Even Fornestria prepared by sending more scouts into the forests and strengthening their magic barrier.
Tensions were even higher as each ruler speculated the other was preparing for war. Communications between them dwindled and it seemed that fights would break out soon. The more pacifist ponies cried out, only to delay what seemed inevitable. It was only a matter of time now. It felt as though everything was now.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 4
Springwood Forest was much more quiet since the event at Bleak Coliseum. Chromacia roamed the forests as she did every-so-often when she had free time. The birds would not sing their songs and the small creatures hid from sight. She could feel the despair of the forest and in turn, it made her despair as well.
The winds lamented through the tree tops and played mournful tunes. Chromacia trotted gravely through the woods. She seemed like she was almost ready to fall to tears. An abrupt sound played on her ears. It sounded like the clomping of several hooves.
Out of curiosity Chromacia headed towards the noise. Through the trees she could see the main road to Fornestria. Sticking to the trees she looked down the road and saw the silhouettes of armored ponies. For the fear of them being a war party she stepped back.
Before they arrived to her position she used forest magic to camouflage herself almost perfectly to the surroundings. As the last line of ponies passed one of them caught her eye. A distinctive dirty, blonde mane and light blue coat assured her it was one of the Tridonstrian twins. Being careful not to disturb the vegetation, she came out of the trees and onto the road, trailing the ponies.
The party went though the surrounding villages and then through the castle town. Odd looks were exchanged between the common folk. They were silent as they approached the castle gates. The great steel gates opened slowly to the Tridonstrian visitors.
Chromacia still followed them quietly into the throne room. As they came in, King Ashwood straightened himself to a more presentable stature. Queen Rosemary flicked her mane over to the other side. The ponies stopped and their ambassador came forth.
"King Ashwood and Queen Rosemary," he acknowledged in his gruff voice, "I've come on behalf of Lord Wavecrasher to negotiate and ease tensions between our kingdoms."
"I hope this is not the prelude to a faulty alliance or perhaps an unappealing treaty." Ashwood returned.
"Of course not, King Ashwood, we ourselves, have already figured the dangers such things would cause."
"Very well then, state your piece."
The ambassador began his demands and concerns of the Tridonstrian people.
"Stop hiding you coward!" the shout of a soldier rang out, interrupting the ambassador. It was the twin Gamer Masquerade, distinguished by his horn.
"Come out now and I'll spare you a painful spell!" he threatened.
"Chromacia! Come out darling." beckoned Ashwood. She let her magic dissipate and her form become visible again.
"You?!" Masquerade exclaimed.
"Come, Chromacia, you know better than to deceive visitors who come in good faith." Ashwood warned lightly.
She turned to her father and bowed her head in apology.
"Sorry father. I meant no harm." she apologized in a gentle voice. Chromacia trotted to her mother's side. Masquerade eyed her with disdain.
"As I was saying, before this misunderstanding, Tridonstris wishes that you trade extra lumber so we can better defend ourselves from hostile forces. As well as a strengthening of communication."
"What do we get in compensation, from the people of Tridonstis?"
"Well, in a time of crisis we will come to your aid. If we come into a surplus of ships they will be signed over to you."
Ashwood frowned, he knew better than this.
"In other words you wish to have an alliance. Something that I clearly stated I would not agree with." Ashwood stomped his hoof. "If you wish an alliance go and bother another kingdom. I will not be brought into a war by another's doing."
The ambassador snorted with discontent.
"There are greater threats than just war, Ashwood," he cautioned.
"I know, Ambassador." Ashwood intervened, gravely. There was an uneasy quiet between them.
"We will take our leave then." grumbled the ambassador. He turned and the armored ponies followed him. The large oak doors clunked shut and again there was silence. Ashwood turned to his side and glared at his daughter.
Chromacia looked at him with solemn blue eyes.
"Chromacia, I don't want you to get hurt. Your little stunt almost did that." he ushered. She hung her head and her brown mane fell over her face.
"I know you're curious, but with things as they are I'm begging you. Please be more careful."
Chromacia stayed quiet, as she usually did.
"Rosemary," he called.
"Yes, my lord?" she replied.
"We must discuss what to do in case war is inevitable. Come to the Battle Quarters with me."
"Certainly, my lord."
Two guardians followed them into the side chamber doors leaving Chromacia alone upon the throne. She peeked out of her skulking and proceeded out of the castle. As soon as she cleared the gates she galloped onto the main trail to the Spirit of the World.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 5
"The flames will
rise higher than
the skies, and
burn hotter than
dragon's breath."
Atop the battle-torn walls of Tridontris, stood the sleepless sentries. They watched the horizons and the land, making sure all was well within the kingdoms boundaries. Upon the road they spotted the familiar party sent to Fornestria, returning. The sentries called out to open the sturdy metal gate.
The party trotted though the groaning gate into the outskirts of Tridonstris. This place had been raided by the tribals many times. There were no true homes here, only shacks and tents that were lined in rows. Misery thrived here with the loss of loved ones to slavers and raiders. Tridonstrians knew all too well what it meant to fight to protect themselves.
The outskirts gave way to the more privileged housings that led into the heart of the kingdom. Though night would soon fall upon them, the streets were quite busy. Merchants desperate to sell before the day's end yelled to the remaining crowds. The castle stood in the center of the town, surrounded by a moat fed from the Sea of Titans.
The party waited for the drawbridge to open. The news they would bring not sit well with Lord Wavecrasher and certainly not with the Emperor. Treading slowly through the long hall and into the throne room they could already see that Wavecrasher was not pleased. He scuffed at the floor and huffed furiously.
"Lord Wavecrasher," uttered the ambassador, reluctantly, "I regret to inform you that King Ashwood does not accept our terms."
"Fornestrians have always been fickle and nit-picky." Wavecrasher muttered angrily. He continued his subtle fit of rage. "Ashwood believes he's so wise, so above everyone else. Ha! He's weak and he knows it." he added.
Wavecrasher paced back and forth.
"My lord, are you feeling right?" asked the ambassador. He stopped abruptly and gave the ambassador a menacing glare.
"Are you questioning my fitness to lead Tridonstris while the Emperor is away?!"
"Of course not sir! I was just concerned for your health, sir!" he clarified hastily.
Wavecrasher glared at him for a while longer before turning away.
"Leave me, and return to your posts." he ordered. They bowed their heads and trotted out.
"Masquerade," he beckoned, "is it true about the princess?"
Masquerade turned and cocked his head curiously.
"What do you mean, my lord?"
"Her....powers...." he said as if it were poisonous.
"I believe so, sir."
"I see," he muttered, "as you were."
He nodded and continued out of the castle. Upon leaving the courtyard he spotted a familiar face. From a dank alleyway, Thunder Runner came up to Masquerade.
"So how was your trip to Fornestria?" he asked in a faintly humorous tone.
"Uneventful, why?" Masquerade replied.
Thunder Runner scoffed, "Just thought I'd ask."
Fewer ponies roamed the streets as the sun began to hide behind the horizon. Something odd hung in the air, however. An inexplainable tension lingered about.
"Do you think it's a raid?" Masquerade asked.
"Yeah, there's no mistaking that feeling." Runner answered, suddenly serious.
"In that case, I better tell Chaser, wherever he's gone off to."
"See you later." Runner said before parting ways. Masquerade continued along the street to look for Game Chaser.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 6
Darkness disfigured the landscape around the outer walls of Tridonstris. The hills like lumps of coal, and the sky, a shroud of black. Tridonstrian sentries and guards lined the walls waiting for the raiders. Pegasi patrolled the air, watching for movement on the ground.
Game Chaser waited alongside his brother instead of taking air patrol. Clad in the standard army issue Tridonstrian armor, he was ready to fight. Masquerade only wore the standard magic pony helm.
"Do you think Charmer will be okay with Mom and Dad?" asked Chaser.
His brother turned his head to acknowledge him.
"I think so, has she ever been in danger with them." he answered. Chaser nodded in agreement and returned his sights on the horizon. No sooner had he looked, flickering lights of torches began to line the hills.
The lights stretched along the hills almost for miles. Silence caressed the ears of the guards, but it was broken by an unholy screech of a war horn. The torches began to move towards the walls at rapid pace.
"Ready!" yelled the guard commander.
"You should go now." Masquerade ushered.
"That, I should." Chaser replied and took to the dark sky.
Masquerade focused on creating a barrier to hold off the raiders.
"Aim!" yelled the commander. Ponies at the ballistas grabbed hold of the trigger strings. The thunderous roar of hooves ensured them that it was a truly large horde.
"Fire!"
The huge arrows ripped through the air and pained screams mixed with frenzied cries of war rang out. Spells of all types flew out at the quickly approaching mass of raiders. Pegasi ponies dove at the raiders, lashing them with their armor lined wings and tails. Raiders able to reach the walls were brutally cut down by fire magic and aggressive barriers.
Tribals brave enough or perhaps foolish enough, tried to batter down the gate only to be killed off. Pegasi raiders faced even more resistance in the skies. Most were knocked to the ground or shot down by spells. Even so a lucky few managed to break through the line of defense. They terrorized the outlying homes causing hysteria within the deprived ponies.
Shamans bombarded the walls with their magics and allowed the slavers to get past the walls. Inside the walls, the screams of distraught residents echoed. Reserve guards rushed to attack the invading slavers. The tribals lit fires to burn out ponies doomed to be captured or killed. Guards hurriedly escorted those who managed to reach the inner wall.
Within the chaos, many young fillies were seperated from family and taken by raiders. Thunder Runner sprinted to a group of four raiders whom had captured a filly. He took them by surprise, kicking one unconscious while the other three looked for their aggressor. Runner shoved another to the ground and trampled him.
The two remaining tribals charged at Runner. He ducked low, tripping one of them and dodging the other. With a lucky hind kick he knocked the one he'd dodged unconscious and headbutted the one he tripped. The filly watched Thunder Runner as he came to check on her.
"C'mon. We need to get you to a safe place." he stated. The filly nodded and followed him through the chaos. Near the inner wall several volunteer guards were leading people into the gates. Two distraught ponies pushed past many other ponies toward Runner.
They were the filly's parents. They embraced their child furiously.
"Rain Catcher! We thought we'd lost you!" cried the mother.
"Thank you, sir! How can we ever repay you?" asked the father. He looked around to see that his daughter's rescuer was already gone.
Back on the front lines, the tribal forces were dwindling. The slavers retreated, captives or not. Guards and soldiers continued their assault as they began a mass retreat. Slavers were the main targets as a last attempt at saving those captured.
The light of those torch bearers who remained faded into the black horizon. The scuffing of heavy hooves lightened and quiet ensued.
"All right men! Let's get those fires out!" ordered the commander.
"Sir, what of the bodies?" asked a soldier.
"Burn them in a pile upon each hill. Let the raiders know if they want to come back they're welcome to try."

Chapter 7
"The bones of the
world will crack
and shatter. Then
be colored black
as pitch."
"So, Omni, did you hear about Tridonstris?" asked Veil Tome. Omni peeked up from his books at his fellow mage.
"No, I have not, go on." he replied.
"It was hit by a huge raid, biggest one in six years."
"Really. Are the Tridonstrians recuperating well?"
"Slowly, but surely."
Omni nodded and returned to his studies. Veil Tome grabbed a letter satchel from his side. He pulled an envelope stamped with the Archmage's mark, and placed it on Omni's desk.
"It's important. I'd read it as soon as possible." he urged before he left.
Omni took the letter and opened the envelope. He read the contents of the letter, realizing at the end just how important it was.
To Magus Omnimental,
As certain events have unfolded it has come to my best interest that a solution be made. I urge you to join the High Magi and I in the discussion of this solution for you might very well be included in it.
Sincerely,
Archmage Arcane Heart
Omni quickly put his books away and put out the candles. He donned his best magus robes, deep blue with gold threading, and left his study. There was no refusing an invitation from the Archmage herself. Especially if she mentions it involves one's self.
Making his way through the streets that were bordered by tall towers and buildings, he made his way to the inner city portals. The traffic was moderate as today was the day of preparation for the upcoming acolyte tests. Dalinix portals were subsequently large, due to the high number of ponies who lived here. They could support several ponies at once from both receiving ends.
Omni stepped into the portal and was instantaneously transported to the Central Portal Nexus. The Archmage Tower's portal was guarded by two high guardians. Omni approached them carefully.
"What is your business here, Omnimental Destiny?" asked the one on the left, in a heavy voice.
"The Archmage has summoned me to see her." he answered. The high guardians stepped aside for him to pass. They were always well informed about all the happenings of Dalinix. He stepped into the portal slowly, he'd only been through it one other time, a long time ago.
The surroundings faded around him and were replaced with new ones. A huge, marble, rune inscribed wall circled the famous Archmage Tower. The gate in front of him was made of multi-hued metals, most likely enchanted. The pathway leading to the gate was no more than a floating isthmus in the sky, but a rather wide one at that.
A Sentinel stood in front of the gate. He was an intimidating fellow, he wore a ceramic mask that bore no eye holes and a black hood that covered almost all of his head. Omni approached the Sentinel with hesitation.
"I'm here to see the Archmage." he spoke, unsure of what reaction he would receive.
The Sentinel turned to the gate and touched it with his hoof. From his hoof flashed a faint light, followed by the sound of it unlocking and opening. He stepped aside without a word and waited until Omni passed through the gate to return to his post. When he did the gate closed and locked itself again.
The courtyard was huge, planted with thousands of exotic flora and multitudes of statues lined the walkways. The hedges were trimmed uniformly, and were like green, leafy walls. Several fountains could be heard trickling water and passive fauna wandered freely to and fro. Omni felt compelled to wander around the courtyard himself, but he didn't want to be scorned for being late to a meeting with both the High Magi and the Archmage.
The entrance to the tower was an ebony, wood double door, complete with antique door handles and mage markings around the edges. The doors sensed Omni's presence and opened on their own. The inside of the tower was awe-inspiring. Bookshelves packed with millions of tomes and scrolls, almost twenty feet high, covered the walls. Desks occupied by the bookkeepers were dotted everywhere, they sat in silence studying their books.
Enchanted brooms swept the floors and feather dusters kept everything tidy. There were no stairs in the Archmage's Tower, floor portals let ponies travel to whatever floor they wished, with the exception of a few off-limits floors that a normal mage couldn't access even if they wanted to. Waiting next to the portal was Veil Tome who showed a welcome smile.
"Well, you're not late this time." he joked. Omni rolled his eyes and kept walking to him.
"Let's get going. I'm not late, but you can make me so." Omni replied, anxiously. Omni stepped onto the portal and Veil Tome as well. They were both transported to the Council Room.
The door to the room was shut and Omni looked back at Veil Tome.
"They're in there don't worry." he assured before vanishing into the portal again. Omni gave a long exhale and walked to the door which also opened to his presence. Sure enough there they were, calmly awaiting him.
The Council Room was almost the same as a court room with the highest podium seating the Archmage herself. One High Mage was in front of her with a lower podium and the other two on equally lower podiums to either side of her. The ceiling was high enough to hold a full grown dragon with room to spare. The room was illuminated with sunlight through the colored glass windows depicting the deeds of Dalinos, the First Archmage.
"Come Magus Omnimental Destiny." spoke High Mage Illuminus in the front podium.
"We have much to discuss, youngling." added High Mage Viscus in the left podium.
"And so little time." concluded High Mage Ethos in the right podium. Omni kept silent, afraid that if he spoke out without being asked he would be punished, like they did in the Academy.
"Why do you not speak, Omni?" asked the Archmage, her tender voice calmed his nerves.
"I was taught not to speak unless spoken to, Archmage." he answered. She tilted her head slightly as if annoyed by such rules.
"You may speak as you wish, Omni, so long as it is within reason." she assured.
He smiled a bit, relieved that the Archmage was more generous than he had thought.
"This meeting you called me to, what solution were you planning to make?" he asked.
"I do not know yet, that is why I summoned you here. So that you could help me make a decision on one." she replied.
"So you already have a few in mind?"
"Indeed."
"Well then, what are they....Archmage." he added in quickly.
She thought for a moment and then answered.
"As I considered the dangers of this task I am asking of you I came across the problem of whom to assign to help you," she began, "and as I explored the possibilities I also thought of the difficulties it would provide. Who would be best to help in such a geas."
"A geas?!" Omni blurted out.
"Yes, a quest. I believe you are capable. Are you not?" she re-iterated.
He was shocked for a moment, but pulled himself together.
"Of course, but just what kind of quest are you talking about?"
"Based upon the studies of the old tomes on the times when Flameberge came about, the only way to combat him is to find the relics the Old Rulers used to seal him."
"....Really....is there truly no other way....?"
"I'm afraid so. Nothing else has appeared in the studies. Trying to loop around only leads us back to them. They are truly the only way fight Flameberge, before the thirteenth year."
He tried to process in his mind how he would even begin to start looking for almost thousand year old relics that may or may not even exist anymore.
"Where would we begin? I mean if it's the only way I gladly accept, but where in Equinorve do we look first?" he panicked.
"Calm yourself, Omni. I will explain that later, right now what is more important is finding those who could aid in this quest." she explained calmly.
Omni wondered who could help on such a daring task. It was common for adventures to find old powerful artifacts to be terribly dangerous. Who could possibly stand a chance?
"Wait....I think I know the perfect ponies!" he exclaimed. The Archmage made a small smile.
"And whom do you think would be best, Magus Omnimental?" she asked.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 8
Deep in the mountain city of Ralentald, sat the great King Valiant upon his stone throne. On his left was his champion, Iron Tail, suited in his handcrafted bronze armor. To his right was his son, Greymane, decorated in gold banded, iron plate armor. They watched from their thrones the inner machination that was Ralentald.
Valiant looked upon the city with pride. Knowing that his kingdom that his father, and father's father, ruled over was home to such legends such as they and himself. The thrones resided on a huge stone slab, the size of a red great wyrm. It was suspended over a great pit of magma by diamond chains forged by Great King Ralen himself. The bridge that connected it with the rest of the city was the spine of a full grown red dragon that once claimed the mountain as his lair.
Greymane looked at his father, who was stuck in a trance, listening to the steady beat of blacksmiths hammers and the enormous clockwork gears that helped ventilate the mountain with fresh outside air. Iron Tail preferred not to sit, but instead stood tall and stately in perfect military posture. He looked back at the city, but noticed something odd. A pegasus pony, no doubt a messenger, coming straight for them.
"Father." he spoke.
Valiant, startled from his trance, looked over at his son, who nodded to the pegasus pony coming closer to them.
"A messenger pony? But from whom?" he questioned. The pony landed at the bridge and crossed over, careful not to slip on accident.
"King Valiant," the messenger started, "I have a message for you from Archmage Arcane Heart."
"The Archmage? What does she want from me?" he asked.
"I don't know sir, but it was sealed with an urgency slip. It must be very important." the messenger answered.
"Very well. Begone." he shooed. The pegasus pony flew at top speed through the city back to the open skies.
Valiant examined the envelope he now held in his hooves. It was indeed from the Archmage, judging by the seal. He opened it and read the letter inside.
To The Great Kingdoms,
I have called all of the kingdom's leaders to rally at the Archmage's Tower to discuss an urgent subject that must be addressed at once. I would ask that you bring your warriors who survived at the Bleak Coliseum or any warrior you feel is truly worthy enough to accept the task that I have to request of you all.
With Humbleness and Great Appreciation,
Archmage Arcane Heart
"What does it say, m'lord." asked Iron Tail. Valiant folded the letter and looked upon the great city again.
"The Archmage is calling us to her tower to address something important." he answered.
"What do you think that means, father?" questioned Greymane.
"I know that the Archmage is not one to call on outside help unless it is something truly urgent and worthy of such measures."
"When do we go, sir?" asked Iron Tail.
Valiant stood and stretched his old, battle-worn bones.
"Stoneclove!" he called. An ash maned, brown coated earth pony answered his call. "Get my traveling uniform, please." he asked. The pony took off in an instant.
"Iron Tail," he said, "go and find Stormhoof. Bring him with us."
"Yes, m'lord." he obeyed and took off down the dragon's spine with his wings spread wide.
Stormhoof zoomed furiously at the sky dummies. Slashing them with his newly forged wing blades at deadly speeds. The air was crisp, and the sun was still warm with summer heat. It was a perfect day to train.
"Stormhoof!" yelled a familiar voice.
He stopped mid-attack and turned to see Iron Tail coming to him from the city entrance.
"Ah, Iron Tail! I wondered who was calling my name without addressing me properly." he commented egotistically. Iron Tail looked at his old friend and rival with both a mix of happiness and bit of rival fueled anger. The two had been rivals since the day they started their soldier training.
"King Valiant needs you to come along with him, his son and I to Dalinix." he informed.
"What for?" Stormhoof asked.
"An urgent meeting with all the kingdom leaders."
"All right then, let me get my things together and I'll meet you at the city entrance."
With that Iron Tail parted him back into the city with haste. Stormhoof remembered the day when they had fought to become Valiant's champion. It was a close fight, but in the end Iron Tail won with level headed-ness over his brashness. It was a good fight, but Stormhoof would always try to out do him in everything else.
Stormhoof dove down to the barracks stationed on the plateau of part of Ralentald's mountain. Ponies in standard iron chain mail galloped laps around the entire facility and the sounds of sparring filled the air. He landed at his assigned barrack cabin. Even though he was a Captain he preferred to stay in a cabin, it felt more cozy that way.
He gathered the necessities and locked the door behind him before taking off at full speed to the entrance of the mountain city. Whatever the meeting was about, it would have to be something incredible if he was going to stay interested for long.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 9
"The seas will be
dry as deserts
and the forests
will be oceans
of embers."
The grass of the Plains of Pasture bent lazily in the coming Autumn breeze. The Great Harvest would soon be at hand for the festivities, but this year they would not bring as much celebration as the past years. With the incident at the Bleak Coliseum and the threat of war looming over the heads of every pony in Equinorve it was hard to think of anything celebratory. Avextrian patrols passed on the trails keeping an eye out for any suspicious caravans or groups.
They wore leather armor and wore red and yellow face paint to distinguish their roles as patrol ponies. Avextrix had always been very old fashioned and ancestral in the way they lived. No matter how many cultures cycled through the city they would still follow the old ways. The only real changes to their culture was the title of Chieftain going to Lord, because it was too ancestral and ancient. Shamans were still prominent and the soldiers were still even referred to as braves.
Every way you look at it Avextrix would always be the same city no matter how much time passed.
"Lord Plainsstalker," addressed Brave Eaglemane, " a letter has come from Dalinix."
"Dalinix...?" Plainsstalker contemplated.
"It is a very urgent message, sir." the brave urged. Lord Plainsstalker took the letter and read it.
He finished and looked to the sky.
"It is truly an urgent message. The Archmage usually never asks for outside help unless absolutely necessary."
"What do we do, sir?" asked the brave. Plainsstalker thought for a moment.
"I must bring a warrior worthy for the cause that is to be given to us."
Among the plains many ponies ran free. They leaped and raced without a care in the world, but there was one that did not run with his brethren. His name was Wanderer, scorned by many for his unnaturally dark coat and mane, symbolic of a shadow magic user. That was, indeed, what he was.
It was on accident, however, that he learned to use shadow magic. A young colt, so ready to become the first magic pony brave in Avextrix, but that was when he heard the Shade.
"Wanderer!" called Brave Eaglemane. The solemn pony woke from his skulking and found Eaglemane cutting through the grass.
"Yes, Eaglemane?" he said.
"Lord Plainsstalker has called for you." he answered with bitterness in his voice.
Wanderer perked up a bit, but his head filled with so many questions.
"What for?" he asked.
"Just come on, you'll figure it out when you meet him." Eaglemane replied venomously. Wanderer obeyed, he didn't mind the rudeness, he was used to it.
Plainsstalker watched the fire in the Chieftain's Hut. Observing the smoke for signs of some sort to enlighten him on the dangers of the task he knew Wanderer would be undertaking.
"I got him." Eaglemane said as he entered the hut. Wanderer stepped inside and immediately felt the heat of the fire which made him cringe.
"Do not fear the fire, Wanderer. It may be a bringer of light, but there are still shadows that it forms that you can take advantage of here." Plainsstalker reassured him. Wanderer squeezed by Eaglemane who in return gave him a death glare and then left the hut.
"What is it that I'm here for, Lord Plainsstalker?" Wanderer asked.
Plainsstalker watched the smoke puff and dissipate.
"There is a quest you will undertake." he informed.
"And what is this quest?" Wanderer asked.
"I know not what it is, but I know that it is vital to the world itself, so I have chosen you to go to Dalinix with me to see the Archmage." he answered.
"The Archmage? Dalinix? Lord Plainsstalker, you know I can't go there, they'll kill me!" Wanderer reminded Plainsstalker desperately.
"Not if you are with me, young one." he assured Wanderer.
"But what about after you leave me there? What then? They'll have no qualms about doing it then." he insisted.
"No they will not, for you will take a quest so great that they will not kill you because you will become essential to the task."
Wanderer looked disheartened and afraid. Dalinix never let any practitioners of shadow magic pass through their doors, no matter how benevolent they really were. And after they refuse to let them in they hunt and kill them seeing them as a threat to the world.
"Trust me, child, they will not harm you."
"But..."
"That is enough, Wanderer." Plainsstalker ended. There was nothing but the sound of the crackling fire and breeze of the outside.
Eaglemane waited at the entrance to Avextrix, watching as travelling merchants and their caravans strolled in.
"Eaglemane!" called Plainsstalker.
"Yes, my lord."
"You will come with us to Dalinix, grab what you need and let's be off."
Eaglemane headed into the city and as he passed by Wanderer he gave him another disgusted look. Wanderer had nothing to bring with him, just the clothes on his back and the reputation as a shadow magic user that hung over him. Eaglemane returned wearing his leather armor and carrying two pouches with various supplies.
"Good then, let's be off." Plainsstalker stated.
So they did set off on the main road to Dalinix. They would not be harmed on the roads because they were always accompanied by three more elite braves that trailed not too far behind them.
Dusk of Peace
Chapter 10
Archmage Arcane Heart waited patiently upon her podium. The High Magi had left to attend to other pressing matters. Omni paced the room, his patience wearing thin.
"Calm yourself, Omnimental. They will arrive in due time." she assured.
"That's not what I'm worried about." he replied, still pacing.
"Then what troubles you?"
"It's....I....What if they all meet each other again and the bad blood boils over. There will be fighting and yelling and...." Omni spoke quickly.
Arcane Heart smiled a bit and suppressed a small laugh.
"Now, now young mage. This is a place of non-hostility, it has been kept that way for centuries, the rulers would dare not spoil the sanctity." she calmly explained. Omni stopped pacing and nodded, but perked up when he heard the sound of teleportation from the portal. A guardian trotted into the room and stopped before the Archmage.
"Archmage, the leaders and their champions are assembled in the lobby, should I send them up?" he asked.
"Yes, send for them, we have much to cover." she answered. The guardian bowed and went through the portal again. Omni shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts before the former warriors entered.
"Be calm, Omni. Speak what must be spoken and silence what must not." the Archmage uttered. The portal enlarged and through it came the rulers and warriors they had selected. Each had a grave face, partly because of the serious tone of this summon and partly for the recent wounds caused by the battle royale. Hooves clomped and plodded on the hard floor, echoing endlessly through the room.
Each kingdom kept with their people, and stayed clear of the others. Omni steeled his nerves and scanned them, until he caught a glimpse of his prominent enemy of the Bleak Coliseum. Chromacia returned his glance with a cold stare, which made him turn quickly to another pony. The leaders who caught him staring did the same, and in turn discouraged him from looking out at the crowd.
The room became silent as the arrivals waited for the Archmage to address them.
"Esteemed rulers of the great kingdoms, I have summoned you for an urgent and important purpose. A purpose that involves our newly revived fear and enemy, Flameberge." she started with a strong voice. Some of the leaders shivered inside at the mention of Flameberge.
"It has taken time, but we have come up with a hopeful solution to save us from his torment." she paused.
Omni caught Chromacia's gaze again, she had not relented her cold stare. He turned again, instead looking out the windows. She snorted, annoyed at the nerve of her former opponent.
"There are relics of older times that may still exist and they hold the key to sealing Flameberge. As you know, however, relics of the time of the first kings were sealed in treacherous places so that those with evil in their hearts could not obtain them. Seeing that finding them will be a long and arduous journey, it will take more than my choosen mage, Omni, to handle the task. That is were you all come in."
The ponies looked among each other, surprised and perhaps terrified at the news.
"You said that these relics might exist, so they may not even be around anymore?!" asked Stormhoof, which rewarded him a nasty glare from Valiant.
"Correct, but it is our only hope to pray that they are there." Arcane Heart answered. Most of the ponies where skeptical at the decision to undertake such a chance.
"It is the only chance we have to combat Flameberge's return. So, I for one will go with the ideal for the recovery of the relics." Valiant stepped foward.
"And I as well. If only to protect our most sacred of landmarks." Ashwood joined.
"Do not count us out of this fight. The people of Avextrix will lend aid to this quest." Plainsstalker neighed. Wavecrasher fidgeted nervously, unsure whether he should aid or reject the journey.
"And what of you, Wavecrasher? Yay, or nay?" Arcane Heart asked. The others stared at the flustered steward, making him all the more nervous.
"Y...yay...Tridonstris will aid this journey..." he hesitantly answered. The Archmage nodded slightly and looked upon all them.
"Now, as for those who will undertake this geas," she started, "how do you plea?"
It was a tense few seconds, but Thunder Runner was first to step forward.
"I'm in so long as my fellow Tridonstrians will join me." he stated.
"Right, I'll go then." answered Gamer Masquerade.
"Me too." said Game Chaser.
"Don't forget me you guys!" Crystal Charmer added.
Stormhoof darted from the side of Irontail and stomped his hoof on the floor.
"I'll join too! I don't want these guys to have all the fun." he entered, causing Irontail to chuckle in good taste. Wanderer stepped up from behind Plainsstalker and avoided Eaglemane.
"I will go as well. In order to show my good faith." he joined in. Eaglemane scowled, but noticed his leader's unapproving glare and disguised his disapproval.
Arcane Heart glanced at the Fornestrian princess, awaiting her decision. Chromacia looked down at the floor, but came back up and stepped forward slowly.
"Even though I loathe to leave the forests I call home, I humbly accept this quest, on behalf of my people." she answered.
"Well, what do you think Omni. Will you join your once enemies in this quest now as accomplices." the Archmage questioned. Omni looked across the room, seeing the suspenseful faces of the volunteers.
"I will join them." he answered. A few smiles crossed the faces of the ponies.
"Very well then, it is decided. The quest for the relics will take place. And you all should have a name should you not?" Arcane Heart added. They looked among themselves, and it seemed that they all agreed in their minds unanimously.
"We will be the 'Discoverers'." Chromacia spoke. At that moment it seemed that all the pent up aggression and fiery grudges disappeared. For once in a long time there was a small peace amongst the ponies.
This fan fiction doesn't not take place in Equestria, but it does encounter it sometime during the story line. The main characters are of myself and many of my brony friends. I really do hope those who read this realize how hard I'm working on this, making a map of the area that it takes place in (which is set away from Equestria, but still bordering it).
