Chapter One: Waking up
Something was happening around me. The sound of wind rushing past my ears. The cold bite of the air as it stings my skin. The feeling of being weightless and yet the stronghold of gravity still pushing down on my body. My eyes flutter open as the cold bite of the air stings them. I clench them closed from the sudden pain. Slowly I open them again and briefly scan around. What I see before me is something I have only dreamed of. The sky, the entire sky is filled with stars and colors. Things I have never seen before except in pictures, things that I thought to be fantasy. I couldn't help the smile that slowly spread across me lips.
Though that smile didn't last long. In a few seconds I felt my body come to a crashing stop. The weightlessness, the calming feeling. In but a few moments that sensation was gone in a flash. The only thing left was this numbness. My vision blurred in and out rapidly. I couldn't feel a single thing. The coldness, the rushing of air. It was all gone now. I couldn't feel anything right now.
Even the numbness was in my ears. What was once the dull roar of the wind was replaced with a loud ring that constantly droned like a siren. I feel my eyes roll around as they try desperately to focus on anything. As I lay wherever I was I start to feel again. By god I wish I couldnt either. The pain. My entire body was in so much pain. I scream and cry for any form of releases to the heavens above but none came from it. My teeth clench tightly together as some whimpers pass my lips. I want so dearly to scream more right now, to cry this pain away but, that wouldn't solve anything.
I dug my hands into the grass that I lay on as I try to stay still. With every movement I made I could feel my shattered bones grinding together inside of my body. I couldn't hold back the choked sob that came as the pain only worsen by the second. Something broke through the ringing in my ears though. It was brief and faint but I know I heard something. My eyes roll around trying to find what made that noise.
It was no use though. My sight was so blurry that I couldn't make out anything. Not to mention the fact that it was night as well.
“P-Please..” I wheeze out. “I-Is anyone there?”
I didn't get a response but I knew I could hear breathing. I was in so much pain now as I openly sob.
“P-Please help me.” I plead. “I-I don't want to die.”
That was all I could manage before I had to clench my teeth again. The only sound I could hear in the dead of high was running. Whatever was there.. It was gone now. I-I was alone and I was going to die here. I knew that, I could feel the damage. Even if whatever was there came with help, could I ever be fixed? I felt more tears pour from my eyes at the realisation of death comes full circle. I was going to die, alone and cold.
A sudden gasp could be heard. “Oh my goodness!” I hear a voice call in a whisper.
Someone came back! I had to say something! “P-Please help.” I say shaking in place from the continued pain.
“What is that thing Twilight?” I hear a more juvenile voice call out.
“I-I don't know Scootaloo.. Go and get Fluttershy for me, quick.”
I her something run off again as my mind goes hazy. I start to panic. “P-Please don't leave!” I call out in a panic as I try to move toward the sound.
I feel something holding me gently. As the faint sound of wind chimes fills my ears.
“Please don't move!” I hear a concerned voice.
I look to whoever was there but all I could see was a black blob. Know I wasn't alone anymore do I let my head rest some. I was really tired.
“No! Stay awake! Whatever you do don't fall asleep!” I hear the voice call to me desperately.
“I-I’m so tired and cold.” I state. I feel my eyes start to lower. “Just a few minutes.”
“No! J-Just hold on tight!”
I didn't get to say anything more as I see a bright flash of purple. The last thing I remember is hearing a scream and then everything going black.
The sound of voices faded in and out as time went by. It was like being awake and asleep at the same time.
“He...coma.”
“...long?”
“Needs... recover.”
As time went on the the voices slowly started to clear. While still not perfect I could hear a lot more as they spoke to me.
“You’re safe.. Worry..”
“Awake in.. Days.”
The voices just kept getting clearer and clearer. I didn't seem to have many thoughts to be honest. All I could hear were these voices and that seemed to calm me more than my thoughts at the moment.
“Is.. waking up?”
I feel myself let out a groan as I feel my body in pain. While it wasn't as bad as last time it was still painful.
“Fluttershy!” I hear someone scream.
I hear a slight gust of air was over me as something lands near my side. I feel something lay on my chest gently, something small and flat. Was that a hand?
“Shhhh.. It’s alright. Just calm down.” The angelic voice coos softly in my ear. “Just rest for now.”
I decide to follow what the voice told me as I allow my mind to calm.
“He’s still in pain.” I then feel a prick in my arm that makes me wince a little. “I’m sorry, this will help. I swear. Now go to sleep.”
I could feel myself nod slowly as I drift off to a slumber.
As I feel myself slowly wake to the land of the living I could hear some voices talking in the distance.
“What do we know about this creature?” I hear a woman's voice ask.
“Not much other than basic biology.” I hear a small voice reply.
“Do you think it will wake up soon?”
“I don't know Twilight, he wasn't in the best shape when you found him.”
I just lay here and listen to them talk.
“We need to know more about it Fluttershy. What if it is dangerous?”
“I’ll tell you when he is awake Twilight. Right now he needs his rest.” The voice holds a pleading tone.
I hear a sigh. “I know Fluttershy. Sorry, I haven't been sleeping much.”
I couldn't keep my mouth shut as a groan escapes my lips from the pain registering in my brain.
“Is he awake?” I hear the woman ask.
I then hear something land next to me with an odd ‘clack’ of some kind.
“Can you hear me?” I hear the sweet angelic voice speak.
I move my head with a slight nod. What I found odd though is that everything looks pitch black. I slowly lift my hand and briefly touch some kind of cloth wrapped around my head before I feel my hand being gently pulled away.
“Please don't touch those.”
I drop my hand some realising that they were bandages. I was going to speak but feel my dry throat. I lick my lips some to no avail. I try to smack my lips to get any moisture out but it seems all for not.
“Let me get you something.” I hear the voice call as it soon walks away.
I didn't wait long as I feel something cool press against my lips.
“Here, drink slowly.”
I nod some as I feel her tip the glass for me. Honestly the first streams of water were painful but the more I drank the more I could feel the dryness of my throat start to clear up. I wanted to drink more but the cup was taken away from me.
“I’ll give you some more later.”
I just nod some as I try to process what was happening.
“W-Where am I?” I croak out still feeling rather dry.
I didn't miss the slight gasp that hit the empty air.
Y-you’re safe.” I hear the one next to me speak hesitantly.
“Am I in a hospital?” I ask next.
“No. You’re at my home, but don't worry. I take care of animals all the time.”
I wasn't sure how to feel about that. Was I at a vet or just some random farm? I guess it doesn't matter. Whoever this woman was, she saved my life. That’s all that really matters.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For saving me.” I answer.
“..Well you shouldn't be thanking me. Scootaloo found you and Twilight brought you here.”
I pause at the odd sounding names. “I-I see.” I still felt it was only right to thank her. “You still healed me, so I thank you for that.”
“It really wasn't much.” She tries to protest.
“Fluttershy.” I hear the other woman call out. “Can I talk to you?”
“One moment.” I hear the voice call to me as the sound of ‘clacks’ could be heard in the room.
I wasn't able to hear these two as they chatted away in another room. Whatever they were talking about must be private though. I just try and relax some and ignore the pain that still coursed through my body. All I could do in this moment was touch my sheets, feeling the softness of the texture. I raise my hand once again and run it over my eyes. Making sure not to cause damage to the bandages. I really hope I didn't hurt my eyes. I drop my hand as I let out a sigh. The sounds of clacking coming back as it approaches me.
“Hello, my name is Twilight Sparkle. If you’re feeling well enough I would like to ask you some questions.” This woman sounds rather professional in nature but I can hear the caring tone behind it.
“Um, alright. I think I can manage a few.” I say with a weak voice.
“Alright. Lets start with something simple. What’s your name?”
“My name?” I ask back.
“Yes.”
I was stuck as that questions filled my mind. What is my name? I could feel my heart start to race as my breath starts to quicken.
“My...name...” I mutter as I start to shake some.
“Are you alright?” The woman asks.
“M-My... My n-name...”
That’s when it happened. Reality hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't know my name. Such a simple and easy question and yet I didn't know it. As I desperately search my own memories for something, anything to answer the question. I was tuning out the cries that came from the others.
“Twilight his heart is beating through the roof! I-If we don't stop him he’s going to have a heart attack!”
My mind was racing as I found nothing. Everything I searched through was utterly blank. All I knew, all I could manage was things about earth. I knew things about humans, what we owned, what our history was but I didn't know how I knew it, where I learned it. I knew nothing about myself. My life, my identity, it was just a empty shell. I didn't even notice the sound of wind chimes fill the air as my mind started to calm the storm. I felt really tired now.
“I'm so sorry Fl....”
The voices slowly faded. But in the coming darkness I could hear the voice coo to me.
“It’s alright, please.. Sleep.”
I feel my breath catch as I suddenly wake up. My heart was beating like crazy but slowly it starts to calm down. I’m all too aware of how stiff my legs feel now. I need to get up and stretch my legs. Though I don't want to cause any unknown damage to myself due to being reckless. I let a sigh escape me as I slowly allow myself to relive the memories before I went to sleep.
I had no name. I was no one here and yet I knew things. There was nothing I can do about it. Maybe it was just something temporary? I can only hope to be honest. I have never felt so scared in my life before. Like a newborn infant I don't know what to do with my life now. If I didn't know who I was anymore then what of my job or family? Maybe they will find me or there would be reports of me missing?
Then the doubts starts to fill me. What if I don't have any parents or friends? What if no one tries to claim me? What will I do with my life then? I just curl up into a small ball, ignoring the pain as I try to drown out these thoughts. I was safe and I could figure that stuff out later. I shouldn't be thinking about it right now.
“How are you feeling?” I hear someone ask.
“...Alright.” I answer sadly.
“C-Can I ask about what happened?”
I let out a sigh. “I don't have a name.” I answer.
“What do you mean?”
I clench my teeth some to stop the choked sob. “I don't remember anything from my life.”
There was just an eerie silence that hung in the room. That was until I felt something wrap me into a gentle hug. I couldn't return it due to my arms being covered by god knows what but I allowed myself to place my bandaged head onto this woman's shoulder as I cried.
“Don't worry. It’s going to be alright.” I hear her coo. My sobs slowly started to subside. “Are you hungry?” The woman asks. My stomach growls in confirmation. I hear her giggle. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
I just sit in wait as this person leave my side and goes to get me my food. Even though the thoughts still were fresh in my mind. There was something about this womans voice that kept my soul calm. Just hearing her speak has this way of easing my pain. I feel something lay in my lap while I was deep in thought over this woman.
“All I have is some fruit on me right now. Plus I don't want you to eat too much.”
I slowly use my hand to feel around the plate. I pick up a small wedge of something. I bring it up to my nose and sniff it. From what I could tell it was an apple. I take a bite and confirm that it was indeed an apple. Rather fresh and juicy one too if I must admit it. I slowly ate what she gave me. I stop right before I eat my next slice.
“Can I ask you something?” I ask the woman.
“Yes?”
“How long till I can take this off?” I ask briefly touching the bandages wrapped around my head.
“Oh! Well I can take it off now if you’d like. I did want to check on your head again.” She admits.
“Would you please?” I ask.
I don't get an answer as I hear the clackity noise again. Soon I could feel the bandages slowly peel away from my head.
“Keep your eyes closed please. You haven't used them in awhile and any light will hurt.”
“Alright.” I answer as I close my eyes tight.
Soon the last of the bandages come off. Honestly it felt great. I then feel this woman place two flat objects on each side of my head.
“Please don't move. Need to see the wound.”
I sit still for her as she gives a few ‘hmms’ to herself but soon takes the weird flat circle things from my head.
“It looks a lot better.” She says happily. “I will still need to wrap it but it won't cover your eyes anymore.”
I was glad to hear that I was getting better. “Any idea idea when I could get out of here?” I ask.
“Oh, well, um.. You see, that’s kinda complicated.”
“..How so?”
“Well, Twilight wants to know more about you before she decides what to do with you. Plus some of your bones might take a few weeks to completely heal.”
While I will admit that the name Twilight was rather odd. I do remember the woman's voice sounding rather official. Maybe she was a cop or something? Finding people hurt out on the streets never goes unnoticed. So it makes sense that she was called in to investigate. Though the idea that I was going to be held up in this bed for weeks sounded.. Actually..
“Wait.. Weeks to heal some of my bones? Doesn't that take months?” I ask confused.
“Well naturally yes. Though Zecora had come by with some potions to help accelerate your recovery. We weren't sure how you would react to healing magic.”
Zecora? Potions? Magic? So confusing.. Was this some kind of small town tucked away from the modern world? While it might not be so farfetched of an idea it still seems rather odd to hear these names and words.
“Um... alright..” I say with a sigh. “Is this ‘Twilight’ going to be back anytime soon?”
“Yes, she should be bringing everypony by as well.”
I felt my mind freeze on one word.
“Everypony?” I ask confused. “Why did you say that?”
“What do you mean?” She asks in a sincere tone.
“Don't you mean everyone?”
“N-No, I meant everypony.”
Alright this was getting weirder. Who in their right mind says everypony? I slowly try to force my eyes open but even the slightest amount of light makes me cringe. I just fall onto my back not caring. Again, I'm safe and being taken care of. Maybe it was just something about this town? I just need to relax, it was probably nothing.
“Can I ask you something?” I hear her speak.
“I guess.”
I really did not like the idea of having another emotional breakdown but. What else could I do?
“To be honest, I’ve never seen a creature like you before. Do you mind telling me what you are?”
Another eerie silence filled the room as I process what she just said to me.
“Is this a joke?” I ask not sure whether I just heard what she asked correctly.
“I-I never seen a creature like you before to be honest. I’ve been taking care of animals for a long time.” She says shyly.
Alright now this wasn't funny anymore. This had to be some kind of joke. I slowly reach my hand out towards where the voice came from. In only a few moments I feel my hand touch something soft. I quickly pull away but then cautiously move it forwards again. I run the flat of my hand over this fur like thing. Was it a dog? Couldn't be. The fur was insanely fine and soft. Almost closer to skin than anything else. The more I move up the more I start to feel different traits.
I just run my hand over what I think is a cheek all the way up till I touch what I think is an ear. It was a very thick and long ear. Was this a horse of some kind?
“What is this?” I ask.
“U-Um can you stop doing that? I-It tickles.” I hear a feminine giggle.
I quickly pull my hand away.
“T-This isn't funny.” I say feeling some fear well up.
“What’s wrong?” She asks.
“I-I don't get what kind of prank this is but it’s not funny anymore.” I give a few mock laughs. “Ha Ha! Set a pony in front of me and talk while standing behind it. Very good, now please, stop.”
“B-But i'm not pranking you.” She sounds hurt.
I slowly crack my eyes open. Still wincing from the pain but keep at it. I don't know who these people are but i'm not going to play their game. As I finally force my eye wide open all I see is total whiteness. Soon it fades as colors emerge. Everything was very blurry as the colors slowly started to take shape. Those shapes become finer lines. I blink a few more times to clear the fog completely.
What stands before me is something that I honestly can't comprehend. A small banana yellow pony. Though it wasn't the ponies from the world I knew. At the tallest I would assume from its hooves to its head the thing only stood 3ft at most. Its head was probably half Its body size in scale and even its eyes took up a major portion of the face. What I find odd is that as I look at it I start recognize that it actually looks female.
I move from her face up to see it..No.. she has a long flowing pinkish mane that ran down the length of her neck. My eyes kept wandering every detail of this being as I spot a trio of butterflies on her flank. It looks like a tattoo from what I could tell. I also notice her tail was longer than her mane, not only touching the ground but even extending some around her.
When I move back to her face I notice something rather disturbing. She was looking at me, not in the way an animal looks at you, but she was actually looking at me. I could plainly see the emotions on her face. She had a look of fascination. I have never seen a animal of any kind on earth have such control over their face like this, with the exception of a monkey of course. Her large blue eyes just looked at me as I looked at her.
“This can't be real.” I say under my breath.
I slowly extend my hand towards her. Seeing her eyes look to my appendage with hesitation seemed to make me more nervous, but she doesn't move and I don't hesitate. I soon rest my hand to her cheek and feel a jolt run up my spin. I-I was touching her and she was there. I gulp some as I shakily bring my hand back to my side. I take a few deep breaths to try and process what the hell is going on.
“Are you alright?” She asks.
That came from her mouth. It literally came out of her mouth. I was here and she just spoke. She just spoke and asked me something. My mind was a total mess as it replays the image of her moving her mouth as sound came out.
“Y-You talked.” I say in disbelief.
“D-Did you not want me to talk?” She asks.
I start to laugh. Not a genuine one but that of a man who has lost his mind. It was that laugh that sends a chill down your spine.
“I-I must be dreaming.” I say with a smile. “A very vivid one but a dream nonetheless.”
I try to get up from the bed I was in but quickly find the pony thing holding me down.
“You’re in no condition to move!” She pleads.
I start to struggle now. “Get off me!” I yell as I thrash around. “This isn't real! This is a dream!”
“Please stop!” She pleads further.
The way her voice cut through me was painful all on its own. I stop thrashing as she pulls me into an embrace.
“It’s alright. You’re safe here.” She coos sweetly.
This wasn't a dream at all was it? There was no way this could be a dream. The pain I feel right now should’ve been enough to wake me. I was still here though. I bury my face into this creature's chest as she holds me and do something that I couldn't hold back anymore. I cried. I cried from the pain, from the reality, from everything really.
“Shh... Shh..” I hear this creature coo. “Everythings going to be ok. I swear.” She gently lays me back down. “Now get some rest. You’ll feel better when you wake up. I promise”
I did feel tired. Maybe sleeping would do me some good?
Once again my consciousness came to me.
“Is he waking up?” I hear a voice that I don't recognize call.
My eyes slowly open as I take in something that makes me flinch back. There were 5 ponies standing at the foot of my bed. Each of them looking to me with mixed expressions. I look to my side and see that the yellow one was by my side, looking to me with a gentle smile. I look back to examine each of these creatures that now stood here.
One was lavender, I think. I could see that her mane was a darker purple with a streak of red to it. The mane style was very different from the yellow ones. It oddly enough looks more nerdy than anything else. But what managed to catch my breath was the small protrusion coming from the center of her head. I think she took notice of my wonder as I simply gaze at her horn.
“I’m a unicorn if you're wondering.” She answers as if she could read my mind. “I’m Twilight by the way.”
I shake myself from staring and move to the next. I didn't really have a name so I assumed I didn't need to reply. The next was a regal looking one. Her coat was pure white and looked to not have a spec of dirt on it. Her mane was a lighter purple but all flowed into one massive curl. Oddly enough even her tail was done in the same style.
“You look beautiful.” I feel slip my mouth.
It was the truth. There was just something about this creature that made me recognize that she was gorgeous.
She seems to beam at the compliment. “Why thank you! You may call me Rarity.”
I nod some as I move to the next. She had a orangish type coat. What I found odd was that most of her mane was covered by a hat, but from the little I could see I could tell she was blond. The more I look I could see that some of her mane was done into a ponytail. As her tail was also done in a ponytail.. Man, this is weird. Though I noticed she had rather beautiful green eyes.
“I’m Applejack. Work the farm over on Sweetapple acres.” She speaks in a southern accent.
I move to the next and am surprised when I have to look up. My eyes go wide as I see this next one is flying some. Her tiny wings actually flapping gently to give her some lift. Her coat was as pure as the sky, a clean cyan. Though what really caught my attention was her mane. It was rather bedraggled in style but the colors were amazing. Pure rainbow coloring, actually stacked in a proper spectrum pattern.
“Rainbow Dash is the name. Fastest flyer in Equestria!” She boasts.
I look over to where I thought I saw another pony. That was until I say two large blue eyes in front of my face. I let out a quick yell as I bring my hand up and push this thing off me. I clench my teeth as a choked sob comes from those actions. My arms still felt broken and that definitely didn't help them at all.
“Pinkie!” I hear one of them call in anger.
I could feel myself being held now.
“It’s alright, I’m so sorry.” I open my eyes as I look to the yellow one.
“W-What was that?” I ask panting from the pain.
“That was Pinkie. We’re so sorry.” Twilight comes in.
I look over to her and see a pink mare with a flat mane being suspended in a pinkish bubble of some kind. I look to see that Twilight's horn was glowing the same color. I couldn't help by shiver more at all these foreign things.
“T-Twilight, can we get some alone time?” The yellow one makes it seem more like a demand than a question.
“..We’ll be in the living room if you need us.” She then escorts them all out.
“I’m so sorry about Pinkie. She gets rather excited when she meets new friends.” The yellow one says after they leave.
The pain was subsiding some now.
“So what's you name?” I ask not wanting to talk about what happened.
“My name is Fluttershy.” She answers.
“So what is going on again?” I ask still feeling fuzzy.
“Twilight just wanted to ask you some questions again. Our friends wanted to meet you as well.”
I nod. “I’m fine with answering questions, but, I don't want the others here.” I say hesitant.
She nods slowly. “O-Oh.. ok.”
“I just don't feel comfortable yet.” I answer. “This is all so new to me.”
She nods in understanding. “I understand completely.”
“Thank you Fluttershy.” I say with my first real smile of the day.
She practically beams when she sees that. “You’re welcome. Just sit tight while I get Twilight.”
I nod as she trots over to the bedroom door and shows herself out. It doesn't take long for her and Twilight to come back in. Twilight shifts nervously in place some as she looks at me.
“Once again I want to say how sorry I am about how Pinkie acted.” Twilight comes out saying.
“It’s alright. I was just a bit startled is all.” I try to ease her mind.
“So Fluttershy said you’re still open for questions?” I nod. “Alright. I-um was told by Fluttershy that you don't really remember anything about yourself, correct?” I hesitantly nod. “I’m sorry to hear that. Um, What should we call you?”
I just look out a nearby window as I think about what she asked. All the names I could pick and none of them seemed right. John, Pat, Bob, Rick, Danial. These were names that had lives, had faces. M-Me.. I don't have that same privilege. Out of all the names, there was only one that seemed to fit me.
“Anon.” I say hesitantly.
“Anon?” Twilight parrots the name back.
I nod. “Yeah, Anon will do just fine.”
“Does it mean anything to your people?” She asks.
“It’s short for anonymous. A person who’s not identified by a name. I don't really have a past, so I have no name.” I say sadly. I look up to see the two of these ponies hanging their heads looking rather melancholy. I quickly try to cheer them up. “But it will do just fine as a name. So don't worry.” I force on a smile.
“Um, ok.” Twilight says as a quill floats next to her and scribbles something.
“H-How are you doing that?” I ask looking to the quill.
She follows my sight to the quill and then looks to me confused.
“You mean my magic?”
“Magic?”
She raises a brow at me. “Does your race not use magic?”
I shake my head. “As far as I know there has never been any magic in our entire universe.” I answer.
That gets her eyes wide. “No magic?” I shake my head. “None at all?”
“Nothing,” I answer honestly.
“How does your race manage?”
“Technology.”
“Really?” I nod. “How advanced are you?” Twilight asks looking excited.
I scratch my head.. “I don't know. I haven't seen anything here to compare it with.”
That gets a blush from Twilight. “Oh, thats right. How about we table that for later?” I nod. “To make this more fair, why don't we trade questions? I tell you about my world and you do the same?” Twilight offers.
“That sounds great actually.” I say.
She smiles at me. “Alright. Let me tell you how magic works.”
Twilight and I have been talking for around 6 hours or so. We have traded a great deal of questions and we have both learned a bit about the worlds we live in. I have to say that hearing that the sun and moon were actually controlled by these ponies was a hard pill to swallow. Though the same seemed true when I told Twilight on how our sun and moon work. We kinda just both agreed that it was something we would accept at face value.
It was starting to get late though and I was feeling very tired. Fluttershy kindly asked Twilight to leave so I could get my rest and assured her that I could talk more tomorrow. With that did Twilight leave with the rest of her friends. I didn't get to talk to them more and honestly I was grateful for that. The scare I got earlier put me off a little, I will admit. Anyways. Fluttershy was by my side the entire time and I have to say that I was thankful for that.
I look over to her with a smile as she smiles back at me.
“Are you hungry?” She asks, then something comes to mind for her. “Oh I almost forgot! What is it that humans eat? I know you and Twilight talked about a lot but you didn't really say anything about it.”
I was hesitant to say anything on that matter to be entirely frank. Twilight asked what it was that my people at regularly and I dodged the questions by asking her what she ate. Though even now I could still see the weird look they both gave me when I kept changing the subject. Eventually they just decided to ignore it and move on. Now that I was alone with Fluttershy I felt that maybe I could tell her. She takes care of animals and even a bear from what I hear. She has to at least understand the concept of a carnivore.
“Actually Fluttershy there was a reason why I kept silent about that.” I see her get slightly nervous as I look at her. “You see we humans are known as omnivores. I’m not sure if you have these types of creatures here but that basically means we eat both plants and.. meat.“
I was expecting her to run away. Maybe even just freeze up. What I wasn't expecting was her to let out a large breath she was holding.
“Oh is that all? I will admit that when I first saw your teeth I was rather confused how it looked like a ponies and some of my other creatures. I wasn't really sure what you ate. So you eat meat?”
I’m still in shock on how nonchalant she is about this. “I will admit Fluttershy that I was hoping you would take my news well but this is rather surprising.”
“Well I take care of enough animals to know the circle of life Anon.” She says.
I felt my heart skip a beat. This was the first time I actually heard someone say my new name. It was odd how good I felt to hear my name. Like I was being acknowledged, like I actually existed. I can't help the small smile that comes to me. Fluttershy smiles back.
“..Yeah.” I say slightly dazed. I shake it away. “Sorry. So ponies are alright with that kinda stuff?”
That makes her smile drop.
“Um, no.. Don't take it too hard on them. They just never get out much to be honest. So eating meat is a large taboo here.” She admits.
“Oh..” I say feeling down.
“So what kinds of meat can you eat?” She asks.
“Well anything really. As long as it’s cooked. Any red meat, fish.” I say.
“Would you like some?” She asks.
“Some what?”
“Some meat for dinner?”
I couldn't help the shiver that went down my spine. I knew she was accepting and all but was she really alright with making me something like that.
“Fluttershy I can't ask you to cook me something like that.” I say honestly. “Isn't it taboo?”
“Well, yes but I don't want you to feel bad for being who you are.” She says honestly.
This pony was.. I don't think I can even comprehend her to be honest. She is so genuine with everything she says to me. I can hear how much she cares about me, even though she still doesn't know me.
“I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable.” I say.
“It’s no problem at all.” She comes back.
“Still I’m a guest here an-”
She holds up a hoof. “No, it’s alright. I will make you a meal and we can eat together.” I then see her get shy. “I-If that’s alright with you?”
I hesitate some “..Sure.” I answer.
She smiles at me. “Alright, you rest some and I’ll get everything ready.”
I give her a nod as she goes on her way. I just lay down and slowly take in how my day went. Everything went rather nicely. With the exception of that pink thing. Even now the pain the flowed through my body was only a dull roar now. I felt a lot better and talking to Twilight was enjoyable as well. I learned about Equestria, told her some about my world and felt like I made a real friend today. The smile on my face returns at that thought.
“All done.” I hear Fluttershy say as she sets a plate onto my lap.
When I look down I see a small piece of meat. Probably 3 inches or so on each side. From looks alone I think it was something along the lines of steak? There was also a small pile of greens as well. I look back up to Fluttershy.
“You’re still recovering so I don't want you to go to sleep on a full stomach.” She says.
“What is this?” I ask.
She perks up. “Oh!” She points to the meat. “This is something called a ‘steak’. I’m not really sure what that means but I know it is from a hydra. You see, when one of the creatures in the everfree forest die. The griffons come in and clean it up. Though I ask them for a small share of it for my animals, they don't seem to mind either.” She then points to the greens. “This is just some green beans. I hope you can eat those.”
I nod. “Yeah. I can eat stuff that isn't hay or flowers.” I inform her as I look back to the steak. “Hydra, really?” She nods. “Well, I guess I’ll be the first person to say I ate a hydra.”
I slowly cut a small piece from my hydra steak and place it into my mouth. Honestly it tasted kinda like salisbury steak. The real kind too, not the knock off you get from the store. I couldn't help the slight moan that came from me. This was cooked to perfection and even tasted seasoned.
“Oh god..” I say, slowly chewing to savor the flood.
“I’m glad you like it.” Fluttershy says next to me.
I quickly realise how I must look and sound as I swallow the meat and blush some.
“Sorry.” I say embarrassed.
“Why should you be sorry?”
“I kinda got carried away there.”
She looks confused. “Is that I bad thing?”
I felt stuck when I heard that. “Well, I guess humans just get embarrassed easily.” I say not sure how to respond.
“Oh, well, ok.”
I look down to see Fluttershy was eating what looked to be a salad with some fruits cut up into it. I look back to my plate with a new vigor as I start to eat my meal. Through the entire thing I couldn't help the small moans that left me. The steak was really that good. Once I was done Fluttershy took my plate and went back to the kitchen.
“Alright, time to get some rest. You still have a few days to go till you can walk around but a few weeks after till you’re 100%.” She informs me.
I smile at her. “Thank you Fluttershy, for everything.”
“No problem Anon. Sweet dreams.” She says happily.
“Sweet dreams.” I call back as she heads off to her room.
Once the light goes out do I feel a calmness come over me. Honestly I don't think I have ever felt so safe in my life before. This place was magical all on its own. Even though I knew that this would be an uphill battle. I had the strangest feeling that I wouldn't be doing it alone. At the very least I had Fluttershy there and I can only hope that she is my friend. Slowly my eyes drift closed as I let myself be taken by the night.
Chapter Two: Differences
I feel myself slowly stir awake as a smell fills the air. It was the smell of something that made my mouth water and stomach turn me to wake. My eyes open as I look around from my reclined position. Now that I was fully awake do I recognize the smell. It was breakfast. The smell of eggs, potatoes and even something that smelled like bacon. It took me a few moments to realise that I wasn't on earth again. While that still made me feel a twinge in my heart, I didn't let it bother me.
I look around and see that I was still in this room as well. That means that the ponies weren't just in my head either. I was actually here. What can I do about this? Honestly, there is nothing I can do. I just lose myself in the memory of how nice Fluttershy has been and how much I enjoyed chatting with Twilight. They’re nice and I’m safe. What else could I ask for? Nothing, there’s nothing. So no use crying of spilt milk. I was here and as far as I know I’m here to stay for the time being.
“Oh good, you’re awake.” I hear a voice call to me.
I look over to see Fluttershy with a large tray on her back as she walks over to me. I was mesmerized at how she was managing to keep the thing still while she walked. She must have the poise and grace of supermodel. With a great control of her dexterity does she reach her head around to her back and gently turns back with the tray in her mouth. Setting it down onto my lap. I was left in awe at such elegance.
“Wow Fluttershy. I don't think I have ever seen a creature do that before.” I say honestly.
“Do what?”
“The tray thing. You kept the entire thing balanced on your back as you walked!”
She looks away some. “It wasn't anything special. Everypony can do it.”
“Well it was still amazing to me.”
I look down to my plate and confirm the smells from earlier. A simple looking spread but I couldn't be happier to see it. I pick up the fork and start to chow down. Honestly I think Fluttershy should be a chief. She seems to have a knack for it. I look over briefly and see Fluttershy looking to me with amazement.
“Something the matter?” I ask.
“I’ve never seen a creature with claws like yours.” She says.
I smile. “Well their not claws. We call them hands.”
I wriggle my fingers some. Even doing a small wave pattern with them. Fluttershy just watches like it’s the most interesting thing in the world. I couldn't help but chuckle some at the irony. She realises what she is doing and blushes some as she shows herself out. Soon she came back with her own meal. Once again we both ate in silence. Nothing needs to be said, just enjoying the company.
“So do you have anything planned today?” I ask.
“Well. My friends wanted to come by again later. If that’s alright with you?” She asks hesitantly.
I still felt a little nervous but give a hesitant nod. “Yeah, sure. Can we do it on a more personal level though? They probably want to ask me questions too and with so many people around it could get a little, much.”
She nods. “I’ll let the others know. Thank you for seeing them. They’re rather excited to be talking to a creature no pony has ever seen before.”
I chuckle a little at that. “Yeah I get it. See an alien, try to be friends with it.”
She giggles some at that. “I bet the colts and fillies around town would be happy to see you.”
I nod. “Yeah I bet they would like the idea of befriending an alien.” I look down and realise I was still hurt. “So a few days till I can walk around huh?”
She nods. “You should be able to walk with some help tomorrow but a week or so till you can manage on your own. We could try to heal you with magic but there is a chance that you could become immune to it like ponies. For the most part doctors never use magic on a patient unless it is serious.”
I grin at her. “Falling from the sky isn't serious?”
Her eyes open in shock. “You fell from the sky?”
I nod. “Pretty sure I did. I remember feeling the wind blowing past me for a bit. Seen the night sky and then, well, then pain.” I shiver some from the thought.
Her eyes were still wide. “T-That is unbelievable. Your wounds were pretty bad but not that bad. You should be...” She tapers off at the end.
“Yeah I guess that does sound about right.” I admit. “Thankfully I didn't die.”
She nods slowly as we fall back into silence. I had finished my meal awhile ago and Fluttershy took my plate away for me. I honestly was starting to feel bad about having her take care of me like this. She is just too kind for her own good it seems. She doesn't ask for anything in return and just simply gives like it is normal. I can't just take advantage like that. When I’m all healed I promise I will do my best to repay my debt to her.
With a nod to assure those thoughts do I hear a muffled knock. From there I can hear Fluttershy answer her door and start talking to her friends. While I can't hear them completely I can pick up some level of excitement in each of their voices but one sounds oddly sad. A few more moments pass and I hear a gentle knock at my door. I was a little confused so I speak out.
“Uh, come in?”
Slowly the door open and I feel my skin crawl a little as I see the pink pony again. Her head was hanging lower than her straight mane. Let me tell you, it looks as odd as it sounds. Even with my previous day in mind I still can't help but feel a twinge in my heart at how downtrodden she looks. She walk to the foot of my bed with her head hung low and just sits there.
“A-Are you alright?” I ask hesitantly.
“I’m sorry.” A faint whisper could be heard.
“It, uh.. Don't worry about it?” I say not really sure how to answer.
She looks up to me with teary eyes. She genuinely looks sad and that made my chest twist all the more.
“I-I’m so sorry. I got excited thinking I was going to make a new friend. An alien friend no less!” Her head hands low. “Then I hurt you. I understand if you don't want to be my friend or even see me again.”
My heart was twisting more as she spoke. Every word was laced with truth and sadness. I don't think I have ever heard something so genuine.
“What’s your name?” I ask.
“P-Pinkie Pie..” She says looking up to me with tears trailing down her cheeks.
I wave for her to come closer. She walks over to my bedside and looks to me curiously. I gently lean over to her and wrap my arms around her for a simple hug. I can feel her freeze up some but soon buries her head into my chest and lets loose. Shakily wrapping her hooves around me as she cries. She must have been worried sick over this all night. A bit of guilt filled me at the thought.
“It’s alright.” I speak softly. “I’m not mad, honest. I was just a bit startled is all.” I try to comfort her.
I hear her sniff some but never leaving my chest.. “R-Really?”
I nod some and can feel her straight mane under my chin. “Yeah. So don't cry anymore.” I say.
I let go of her as she does the same. I see her use a hoof to clear her face up some. Though what happened next was really odd. Suddenly her mane just puffed out into a bubbly mess. She looked up to me with a smile that should’ve tore her face apart.
“I’m so happy!” She shouts with glee but quickly settles down. “Oh, sorry.” She chuckles nervously.
I wave it off. “It’s fine Pinkie Pie. Just try to take it easy around me till I’m healed.”
She smiles at me. “Just call me Pinkie. All my friends do.”
I know it may sound funny but I felt my heart hitch at that. Twilight and Fluttershy may not have said that I was their friend but I got the feeling that I was. Though it seems so different when someone actually says it to you. I couldn't help the small smile that came to me.
“Alright Pinkie.”
She beams at that as she walks over to the door but stops turning to face me.. “One last thing. What kind of cake do you like?” She asks.
I scratch my head at that. “I-um.. I don't know.. Surprise me?” I say.
She smiles even brighter at that suggestion. “Alright then! See you later Anon!”
Again that name. It feels so right to hear someone calling your name. Pinkie shows herself out and couldn't look happier after our meeting. I didn't get any rest though as the next pony came in. It was that flawless mare from yesterday. Rarity if I remember correctly.
She smiles as she enters but what I find more interesting is something she is levitating in her magic. I quickly lift up my sheets to confirm that she was indeed holding my clothes. W-Was I really naked this entire time? I felt my face burning red at that thought.
“Hello Darling! I just came by with the girls to drop off your clothing. They were a little damage and covered in, well.. I would rather not explain but, I got them all cleaned up!”
She sets the clothes down onto a table next to me. I thought about putting them on but decided against it. The damage was already done so I might as well stay naked till I can walk again. Wouldn't want to make Fluttershy’s job any harder because of my indecency.
“T-Thank you.” I say still feeling a tinge of redness on my cheeks.
“Is something the matter darling?” She asks. “Are you feeling well? Should I get Fluttershy?”
I shake my head. “N-No Rarity. It’s fine. Just something stupid.”
“Well, if you say so.” Her concern seems to melt away. “I must say that those clothes are rather bland though.” She says casting glances at my clothes.
“Well, they are just clothes.” I admit. They weren't fancy or anything, just clothes.
“Just clothes?” She looks hurt.
Seeing her look made me worry. I wasn't sure what may be the problem. In fact, how did she even know what clothes were? I mean, ponies don't wear clothes right?
I nod. “Um, yeah.” Now she looks really sad. “I-uh.. Did I say something wrong?” I ask not really sure what I did.
I can see a certain waver in her eyes as she looks over at something away from me.
“I-Its n-nothing.” I can hear the hitch in her voice.
I really wasn't sure what I said wrong. “Rarity. I-I honestly don't know what I said.” I try to think of anything. “Did I offend you somehow?”
Before I could even get an answer Rarity ran out of the room in tears, slamming the door shut on the way out. I honestly wasn't expecting that to happen. I didn't need to wait long though as Twilight’s head came poking in. She can see the shocked look that was still plastered onto my face as she shows herself in and and closes the door.
“What happened?” She asks simply.
I shrug. “I honestly don't know.” I try to run over everything I said for any flaws. “She gave me my clothes. Said they were bland and, well they are, they're just clothes so I wasn't offended.” I say to Twilight. “I have no idea what set her off.”
There seems to be a knowing look on Twilight’s features. “I understand now.”
“Really, care to explain?” I say with a sigh of relief.
She nods. “You see. Rarity is a fashion designer for a living.”
I felt confused at that. “So..” I thought about what I said. “So..” It then dawns on me. “Oh..”
Twilight nods at my realisation. If Rarity’s career was based on clothing, then I would have to assume it was probably fancy stuff. I mean, none of these ponies wore clothes. So if they did then it probably was worth the time and pain to put it on. So when I just called my clothes ‘just clothes’ she must’ve taken offense to the idea that I thought all clothes were insignificant.
I let out a long sigh. “I understand now. Can you send her back in?”
Twilight nods as she walks out. Soon Rarity comes back in with lines of black tears trailing through her fur. I guess she must use makeup? I shake that thought away as she sniffles to herself.
“Listen Rarity. I didn't mean to insult your profession in anyway. You have to understand something about humans. We wear clothes all the time. From the time we wake up to the point where we fall asleep, most of us are in some manner of clothing.”
She looks up to me with interest. “Y-You really wear clothes all the time?”
I nod. “That we do. So when I said that they were ‘just clothes’ I really mean that. These..” I point to my clothes on the nightstand. “Those are just run of the mill everyday wear. Nothing special about them.”
Her interest seems to grow more. “Humans wear clothes everyday? A-Are their different styles?”
I can't help but feel a smirk come to my face as her sadness melts away.
I nod again. “There is. We have fancy stuff for when we go to fancy things. Clothes to protect us from our jobs or the weather, depending how tough it is. There is pretty much clothes for everything we do in every color of the rainbow.” I answer.
Her eyes were now gleaming for another reason, seeing as she was smiling now. She quickly looks embarrassed as she wipes her face some with a piece of clothes she got from somewhere. Honestly I have no idea where it came from. Do ponies have pockets I’m unaware of?
“Oh my I feel the fool right now.” She admits alud breaking me from thought. “I guess if ponies wore clothes everyday then I can understand just having things that are plain when they are out and about.” I nod at that. “W-When you’re all better would you like me to make you some clothes?”
I wasn't really expecting that. “Uh.. Sure.” I accept. “Maybe I can even tell you some things I know about fashion from my world sometime?” I offer.
There was a certain twinkle in her eye when I offered that. “You have a deal darling! Oh I can just picture what I want to make for you.”
She starts to mutter things to herself as she walk out the room. I let out a sigh of relief. These ponies are rather sensitive but I was glad that I could explain what I meant and made up for it. Before I could think further the next one came in. Well, more like flew in. The next friend I got to meet was Rainbow Dash if I remember correctly.
“Sup.” She says passively.
“Hi.” I reply back. The room then just gets awkwardly silent. “Did you want to ask me anything?”
She shakes her head. “Nothing that I can think of.”
Wow this mare must really not want to be here from what I can tell. Either that or she is just trying to contain her excitement. I wasn't really sure which.
“Um..” I try to think of something. “How fast can you fly?” I ask not really sure how fast pegasus, pegasi. pegasuses? Well, I wasn't sure how fast her kind flies.
“How fast am I?” She asks like I was insulting her. “Have you never heard of Rainbow Dash?” I couldn't help the deadpan expression I gave her. Her face then heats up as she chuckles nervously. “Heh, heh.. Oh yeah.. Well I am the fastest flyer in Equestria. How fast do you think that is?”
I shrug. “I honestly don't know. I just was hoping you had some sort of figure I can compare with.” I answer honestly.
“Well how fast can you fly?” She asks almost as if it was a challenge.
“Humans can't fly naturally.” I answer.
“Naturally?” She repeats.
I nod. “Yeah, we have flying machines.”
She rolls her eyes. “Sounds like that contraption made by Pinkie.”
I can't help but get intertest some. “Wait, Pinkie made a flying machine?”
She nods. “It was kinda weird. Had a huge blade above it.”
I couldn't help but smile some. Was there already research here on such things or did she truly make a helicopter on her own?
“Well humans have other means than what Pinkie made. They can go pretty fast.”
She looks interested. “How fast?”
I scratch the bottom of my chin. “Last I remember the government was making a plane that could fly 12x faster than sound. It’s unmanned mind you but still pretty fast.”
“W-What, 12x faster than sound?!” She sounds totally ecstatic.
I nod. “From what I heard. Not sure if they ever got it to work though.”
“It would be so awesome to fly against that!”
“How fast can you fly?”
“Well I’m not really sure. Twilight says I can break the speed of sound though.”
Now that was interesting. “Really? Like whenever you want?”
She shifts a little nervously. “Well not really. I could only do it a few times. It’s pretty hard.”
I nod at that. “Yeah. I remember only one person that actually was able to break the speed of sound with just his body. He actually took a dive from orbit.” I chuckle. “Well not really orbit but pretty darn high up.”
“I thought you said you can't fly naturally?” She asks.
I shake my head. “He wasn't flying. He just fell thru the sky. Before he hit the ground he used something called a parachute. It’s basically a really big piece of fabric that slows down the person so they can land safely.”
“That sounds crazy.”
I nod. “A lot of people would agree with you on that.”
“You know you’re pretty cool for an alien.” She says with a smirk.
I chuckle a bit. “Yeah I guess I am pretty cool.”
“Well I gotta head out. It was nice to meet you.” She says before flying back out the door.
Well she was a really nice wom- er.. I mean mare. Man this stuff is weird. Anyways the next pony that came through the door was the country girl. Wearing her stetson hat in all its glory.
“Well howdy there.” She tips her hat at me.
“Howdy.” I parrot back. “So you’re Applejack right?”
She nods with a smile. “Sure am. So Twilights been telling us about everything you told her. She mentioned your worlds got farms too?”
I nod. “Yeah. We grow pretty much anything you can think of.”
“Any kinds of apples?”
“Apples.” I blow a playful raspberry at her. “We perfected those. In fact we have even gotten to the point where we have them taste like other fruit. I had an apple that tasted like a grape once”
“A-A grape?” She looks shocked.
I nod. “Yeah, was pretty good too.”
“Well how does that work?” She asks curious.
“From what I remember I think they just put a fuji apple in a bunch of grape juice. Seeing as that particular species of apple tends to breath through the skin more, it was able to absorb the grape flavor more effectively..” I answer the best I could.
She rubs her chin with a hood. “Now that sounds like an idea. We make grape juice from time to time. Never thought of doin that to be honest.”
I nod. “Took us awhile to get it too. So you have a farm?”
She smiles at that. “Sure do. Pretty sure I mentioned it before, but if I didn't then let me start again. Sweet Apple acres is the name. The Apple family grows many different kinds of apples and supply a good portion of Equestria.”
I feel my eyes go wide at that. “Wow.. You actually supply the nation?”
She nods. “That we do. It’s mighty hard work but we make do.” I see her glance over at a clock. “Shoot. I gotta head on back to the farm now. It was nice meeting ya.”
“Nice meeting you too Applejack.” I say as I wave to her.
Twilight and Fluttershy come in after saying goodbye to all her friends. They both look far happier as they approach me.
“So what do you think?” Twilight asks.
“They are very lovely friends.” I admit.
“Thats great! I was a little nervous that you would maybe but heads a bit with Rainbow.” She says nervously.
I shrug. “Not sure why. She seemed pleasant enough.”
“She is, it’s just that she can sometimes get a little protective of her friends.”
I wave it off. “I understand the premise. She was sweet though. No problems whatsoever.”
“Great...” I see Twilight eyeing me with a certain shine to them.
I roll my eyes with an amused grin. “Alright, what do you want to ask?”
I hear a odd ‘squee’ noise as she levitates a piece of paper and quill. I knew I was going to be in for another long Q&A session but I honestly didn't see anything wrong with that. I genuinely enjoyed Twilights company.
It had been another long and exhausting day. Twilight left a few hours ago after she had run out of paper. I thank whatever gods there were for that because I don't think I could’ve handled another question. I felt totally pooped from this entire experience. Fluttershy and I had dinner together once again and she left me so I could get some much needed rest.
Though rest didn't come so easy. I must be a very active person because I feel a certain itch all over my body. I just want to get up and move around a little. Though I didn't want to aggravate my injuries because I can't sit still for awhile. I just sit here and playback the day I had today. Everything actually was really nice. Fluttershy’s friends were all great ponies and it makes me feel like I have a chance at a future here.
What has me worried though is what my prospect will be. I know that I can't live off Fluttershy forever and I wouldn't want to anyways. I wouldn't doubt she would take me in if I asked but I don't feel right doing something like that. I feel I owe her a huge debt for what she has already done for me. Maybe I can help around her place for awhile? It was certainly a thought.
Then came the idea of a job. As far as I know only the ponies I have met even know of my existence. What of the other ponies? Will they accept me just as easily or will they be afraid? If in time they do accept me then what of a job? What can a human do to make ends meat? What can I ever do? What am I ever good at? So many questions I can't really answer.
Maybe I am thinking too far ahead. Perhaps I should just focus on what is happening right now. Make small goals and build from there. I guess the first goal is to get better. I should be walking around tomorrow from what Fluttershy says but for the most part I will probably be bedridden for a few weeks. So maybe starting tomorrow I can try to do some light chores to help out.
It only seems like the right thing to do. I nod a few times at those thoughts. I will help Fluttershy as much as I can until I’m better. If in the future I get a job then I will pay her back in full for what she has done. I feel much better having at least the simplest of plans in mind. I can feel the day finally hit me full force as I lay my head down and let sleep take me.
“Time to get up.” I hear a sweet voice call to me.
I stir a bit as my eyes slowly open to see Fluttershy looking to me with a smile.
“Morning already?” I say with a groggy voice.
She nods. “I think you can finally get out a bed now if you want. Though you still won't be able to walk well yet.” I see her reach for something on the floor and set them onto the bed. “I was afraid that the hospital wouldn't have some in your size. You’re so tall.”
I see that she had placed some crutches for me on the bed. They looked just like the ones we have on earth to be honest. Looked sized for my height too. I was going to get up but then realise about my current state of clothing.
“Fluttershy do you mind stepping out?” I ask nicely.
“Sure.” she says shyly and shows herself out.
I look over to the nightstand that still held my clothing. I reach over and start with my shirt. I was able to get my arms through easily enough but couldn't help the hiss that came from the pain in my back as I slipped it over my head. I reach over for my underwear and pants. Those were a bit tricky to put on but with some skillful shimmying I was able to get them just right.
In all honesty I felt tired from that little work. I let out a sigh as I throw my legs off the side of the bed and get ready to try getting up. I use both the crutches together to help me rise. I could feel my legs shaking as I stood up but held firm. I set each crutch under each arm and lay my weight on them. It felt good to be standing again. I could feel how weak I was but damn did it feel good to be out of bed.
I slowly make my way over to the door. Using the crutches to support my weight. I will admit it took me five minutes just to move a few feet but I made it. I grasp the handle and slowly open the door to the new world. Though what I see make my heart drop some. There are stairs here. I let out a small sigh as I begin my journey. One step at a time, making sure each foot was firm and then the next.
By the time I got to the bottom I felt like crap and my legs were killing me. I couldn't help the sweat on my brow and the labored breaths I gave. I look around at the first floor and see a nice looking living room. There were birdcages hanging around and mouse holes here and there. I guess this was something to do with Fluttershys work?
I see the pony in question round the corner and look at me with surprise.
“Y-You’re bigger when standing.” She says in a whisper. “How are you feeling?”
I let out a slight pant. “N-Never better.”
“Maybe you should get some more rest?” She offers.
I shake my head. “No, Its been awhile since I could walk. I’m just enjoying the feeling.”
“Ok.. Do you want to join me at the table for breakfast?”
I nod at that as I slowly follow after her. Once I get to the table do I notice that there was a certain lack of seating. I guess ponies don't have chair, make sense really. I thank the stars for that though. I don't think I could make a controlled fall like that. Fluttershy sets a plate in front of me. It was small portions seeing as I was still recovering. Honestly that little trip down the stairs felt like a marathon, so I ate without much thought.
Once I was done I notice Fluttershy try to grab my plate. I hold up my hand to stop her.
“I think I can handle that.” I say as I pick it up to place it in the sink.
“You really don't have to. I don't want you to overwork yourself.” She says.
I shake my head. “Don't worry.”
I hobble my way over to the sink. which definitely took longer than it should’ve but it was the principle of the matter. I set it down with the other dishes with a tired sigh. To think that simple things like this are so significant to an injured body. I slowly turn around and give Fluttershy a tired smile.
“So, what’s the plan for today?” I ask.
“Well I still need to feed the chickens outside.”
“Mind if I tag along? I wouldn't mind some fresh air.”
She nods. “Alright, if you think you’re up for it.”
Fluttershy leads me to the front door and thankfully opens it for me first. I hobble my way thru and am greeted by a wondrous sight. The place Fluttershy lived was one of the best places I have seen. There was a certain word for it. Cottage? Sounds right. All around me thought I could see flowers in bloom. Animals running around. A forest not too far head and even a small stream that ran under a small bridge.
Words like tranquil, peaceful and relaxing came to mind. If she really did take care of all these animals then I can see why she liked this place so much. Fluttershy closes the door behind me and walks off towards what look like chicken coops. I make my pace to follow her while taking in the sites. I stop on the small bridge. I could still see Fluttershy as she worked.
It was odd watching her work though. I took notice of odd differences to her species and my own. How she has to use her mouth for pretty much everything. She tears bags of seed with them. Holds fish and even worms. I guess they are use to it but I can't help but thank that I have hands for something like that. She was very fluid though with her motions though. Everything she did seemed to do has a certain grace to it.
What I see next is Fluttershy swivel her ears in a certain direction. After awhile she picks up her head and looks over to where her ears were pointing. I follow her gaze and see nothing. At least for a few seconds. Soon I see a certain purple pony that I knew trotting along happily towards us. I see her wave to Fluttershy but then she looks over and sees that I’m standing a little ways off.
Her smile seems to grow as she comes walking up to me. I couldn't help but smile back at her.
“It’s good to see you up.” She says cheerfully.
I nod. “I feel the same Twilight. How are you today?”
“Fine. I just wanted to come by and check up on you two. How are you feeling?”
I shift a little from one leg to the next. “Can't complain. A bit weak here and there but that’s probably normal.”
She nods. “Good to hear you’re getting better.” I see her look me up and down. “I must admit you’re a lot taller when standing. You look big in bed but it seems so different now that you’re here on your hooves.”
“Feet.”
“Feet.” She corrects. “Are humans normally this tall?”
I lean my head from side to side. “Kinda. I mean I think the average is 5’7. Wait, how do you ponies measure height?”
“Hooves.”
I scratch my chin. “Um. How many hooves if your hoof? Would you say it was one hoof in measurement?”
I see her raise a brow that suddenly appeared. Odd how that happens.
“What do you mean?”
“Well not all humans have the same sized foot. So a foot is 12 inches. A child can have a foot but it won't measure at a foot. Understand?”
It then dawns on her. “Oh! Yes I get it. I guess you can say that two of my hooves would equal a single hoof. We measure from Celestia’s hoof size.”
Hmm.. This Celestia must be one big pony. I know Twilight said she was pretty big but then again she also said that I could be taller than Celestia. I just shrug at that.
“Alright,” I look at her hoof and do some simple spatial reasoning. “I would have to guess that Celestia has a 10 inch hoof or so. So I would be 7 or so hooves high and the average for people would be 6 and a half. That is very basic guesswork though.”
She nods. “Well that sounds about right. If I had to guess I would also say you’re 7 or so hooves tall. That is pretty interesting to know that your people are rather tall comparatively.”
I shrug. “You have to take into account that I stand upright. I bet you would be about to my chest if you did that.” I say.
She nods some. “I guess so. Though it isn't really comfortable for most ponies to stand on their back hooves for too long.”
“Yeah I can imagine so.” We then fall into a silence but I suddenly think of something. “So can I ask you something Twilight?”
She perks up. “Sure!”
“So does this Celestia know I’m here?”
She nods. “She does. I’ve sent her a report on your first day of arrival.”
Makes sense. “So will I be meeting her soon? I know if an alien showed up on our planet the president would probably see what it was all about.”
Twilight nods. “You would be correct but since I told her you were nice and not a threat she decided not to put off some of her meetings. She is interested in you though if that’s what you’re implying. She just wants you to be in good health before any visits are made.”
I nod. “Well there was something else I wanted to know too.” She looks to me with interest. “The ponies here. Will I ever get to go out in the world on my own?” I look over to Fluttershy. “ I know Fluttershy is nice and all but I don't want to be a burden to her. I want to get a job eventually and make a life.”
“Well.. I never really thought about it to be honest.” She chuckles nervously. “I guess I can understand wanting to be independent. I will keep you posted on meeting the town. Right now though just try to recover a bit.”
I let out a sigh. “I get it. Thinking too far ahead doesn't really help me much.”
“It doesn't hurt to keep it on the back burner.” She says trying to cheer me up.
“Yeah.”
Fluttershy was done tending to her animals as she comes back over to us.
“Hello Twilight. Have you come by to check on Anon?”
Twilight nods. “I have. I also came by to check and see if you needed any help.”
Fluttershy pauses in thought. “Well I know it can be a bit boring around here. Maybe Anon would like something to read while he is recovering?” Fluttershy offers.
“That’s a great idea!” Twilight says as she get a certain twinkle in her eye. “I know just the book!”
With that said does she teleport away.
“Where does she work again?” I ask feeling something was a bit off.
“The library.” Fluttershy answers.
“Ah, that makes sense.” Another flash comes and Twilight was where she stood “So what do you have for me?”
Twilight levitates a pile of books towards me. I look to my crutches and then to the pile. She seems to get the idea as a blush comes over her.
“Sorry, how about I set this inside?”
I hold out my hand. “One sec.” I reach over and grab a book from the top. “I can manage one.” I say with a smile.
She gives me a nod as she walks towards Fluttershy’s home. The books floating weightlessly inside behind her. I shift my weight slightly onto my left crutch as I bring the book to both my hands. I look at the cover and can't help but quirk an eyebrow at it. There was a mare on it and she was swinging from a vine with something in her hooves as crocodiles snap up from below her.
Though what really got to me was the title. It was a bunch of blocks and stuff. I couldn't make heads or tails of it. I crack open the book and rifle through it and notice that the entire thing was filled with things I have never seen before. Was this their written language? I lean over to Fluttershy and show her the cover.
“What does it say?”
She looks to the book. “Daring Do and the quest for the sapphire stone.”
I bring the book back and look at the title again confused. I hear a door close and see Twilight was done getting the books inside.
“Um Twilight I think I have a bit of a problem.” I say.
“What is it? Do you not like the book? I knew it! I knew I should’ve brought the history books!” She says looking ashamed.
I hold my hand up. “No, no.. Its not that. I-I can't exactly read this.” I motion to the book.
“What? Did you never learn?”
I shake my head. “I have learned how to read, just, not this.”
That seems to confused not only Twilight but Fluttershy as well.
“Y-You can't read this?” I shake my head. “How is that possible? How can you speak our language but not read it?!” Twilight says totally shocked.
I shrug. “I don't know Twilight. All I know is that I can't make sense of this.”
What happens next was rather rapid. She went from shocked to sad and then happy. I wasn't really sure what she was thinking but there was a certain look she was giving me that made me feel a bit nervous.
“I can't believe this! I actually get to teach somepony how to read and write!” She says with a new level of excitement. “I-I gotta get back home and plan this out. First I will need a checklist of materials we’ll need and then a checklist on where to start.”
Before I could say anything about not going through the trouble she vanished into thin air with an audible pop. I just scratch my head in confusion as I look at the book once more. I guess it is only right to learn the language and learn to write. I look over to see Fluttershy was rather shocked as well from these turn of events.
“So when do you think she will be back? I don't think I can stand here much longer.” My legs were starting to get sore.
“I think it might be a day or so till she comes back Anon.” She then looks up to me with concern. “You can go rest inside if you want. I just want to check on some of the birds before I head back in.”
I nod. “Alright.”
I hobble my way back into her home. I was feeling really tired now from all this work. Well, not really work but it felt like I’ve been carrying around tons of stuff all day. I let out a sigh as I look over to a clock. I didn't recognize the numbers but based on the setup I can only assume it was still early morning. I hope Fluttershy doesn't mind if I take a quick nap. I walk over to the nearest couch and fall onto it.
I could feel something poking me. I groan in response and try to sleep some more. The poking comes back after a while.
“Hmm?” I question still tired from my nap.
“Terribly sorry to intrude Anon but I wanted to get your measurements if that is alright with you.”
“R-Rarity?” I say still half asleep.
“Of course!” Her overly cheery voice rouses me from my sleep.
I slowly roll back to the end of the couch and throw my legs off. I stretch some with a large yawn. A few pops and crack could be heard as I do this. I groggily open my eyes and see Rarity was looking at me with a mixture of concern and some nervousness.
“What’s the matter?” I say in my still sleepy voice.
“Oh, um.. Nothing darling. S-Should we get started?”
I nod tired as I grab my crutches. It then hits me some.
“Um, how am I going to give you my measurements when I can barely stand?”
“That will be no problem! I will assist you but holding you with my magic.”
I could feel myself getting nervous. “You’re not going to drop me right?”
She lets out a harumph. “I may not be a ‘Twilight Sparkle’ when it comes to magic but I think I can manage holding you up.”
“Alright.” I concede
I support my weight on the crutches as I did the first time and slowly get to my full height.
“My, my, I guess Fluttershy was right. You are very tall when standing.”
I chuckle a bit. “Yeah I been getting that a lot lately.”
Before I could say anything else I could feel something wrap around me. It was an odd sensation. It was like having water flowing over me and yet I couldn't feel it. It wasn't warm or cold but it was just there. I could feel the weight of my body lift as if something was picking me up.
“Easy now.” Rarity says with obvious strain in her voice. “I’ll just get these real quick.”
I can only watch as I see a tape measure fly across my body, grabbing any measurements it could. Before too long i could feel my weight settling back on my legs as I lean on my crutches more. Rarity was visibly sweating and looks exhausted as she writes down a few more things.
“Y-You’re heavier than you look.” She says. “I wasn't expecting that to be honest.”
I look down at myself. Was she calling me fat? Last I checked I’m not even close to fat. I reach down and pinch my sides. I didn't get much fat. I was pretty average in weight.
“I-I didn't mean to insult you!” I look away from myself as Rarity looks to me rather ashamed. “I wasn't saying you were overweight darling. It’s just that you seem to be rather, dense. I should say.”
I scratch my head at that. Dense? I wasn't sure what she meant by that but she looks to be genuine in her apology.
“No problem.” I wave it off. “So, measurements?”
She nods. “Mmhmm! Since you told me humans wear clothing all the time I thought that perhaps you would like to wear something other than what you have now.”
I look down and nod at that. It would be nice to get something fresh while I’m here.
“I don't think I can pay you.” I say.
She waves me off. “I already told you yesterday Anon that it was fine. If I do remember correctly you even offered to share some thoughts on fashion from your world.” I could see that twinkle in her eyes.
“Um.. sure. Do you want to chat now?”
She lets out a shrill squeal of joy as she takes a seat on the couch I was sleeping on. I gently lower myself onto it as well.
“Alright so I’m no expert but I will try to give you an idea of what we have.” I inform her.
“I’m ready when you are.” She says with excitement.
I let out an exhausted sigh as I continue to face the back end of the couch. Who would’ve thought that someone could talk about clothes for so many hours? In the end it wasn't even me talking anymore. Rarity kept gushing over sudden ideas she had from my brief talk and how much use it would be. I wasn't too sure but she seemed to appreciate what I told her. The thing is that I was tired but I kept on a smile because of how nice she is.
Eventually Fluttershy came in and told Rarity that it was closing in on lunch and that I should probably get some more rest. Rarity had dresses to make anyways so she left once she took a look at how long we had been talking. I decided then and there that I just wanted to sleep. I told Fluttershy that I would eat later and she didn't need to bother making me anything.
So I fell asleep on the couch. It was really soft and I didn't want to trek my way up the stairs again. I was lucky to even get down them in the first place. So here I was. I had got some shuteye but something didn't seem right. The light outside was gone and everything seemed quiet around. Though what really caught my attention was some odd presents. Like something was close to me.
I slowly roll over and see that Fluttershy had her back up against the couch and was fast asleep on the floor. Had she really fell asleep next to me like this? I scratch my head some at that as I was unsure of what to do. Though I couldn't see her right now there was some kind of tranquility to the scene. The moon shining through the nearby window casted shadows to dance around the room. The steady rise and fall of her body as she rested.
Before I could even realise what I was doing I found my hand was stroking her long and soft mane. I guess it is only human to pet something but I knew that this wasn't just an animal. This was a thinking individual. What if she woke up while I was petting her? Man, would that be awkward. The thing is though she is soft. Like, really soft. I hear a soft sigh escape her.
I feel a sigh of my own escape as I switch from petting her to gently poking. It didn't look too comfortable down there and I didn't want her to sleep like that. Slowly she stirred awake and looked around confused. She slowly turns to face me with a look of surprise.
“Oh! Um, did I wake you or did you need something?”
I shake my head. “Why aren't you in bed Fluttershy?”
“Well, you’re kinda in it.” She states shyly.
I look to the couch, to her and then to the stair. Don't tell me..
“You let me have your room?” I ask in disbelief.
She nods slowly. “You were hurt and I wanted you to be comfortable.”
I don't think I can even process what she is saying right now. Such a pure act of kindness almost made me want to cry from how genuine it is. I just let out a shaky sigh as I shake my head some.
“Fluttershy. I appreciate what you’ve done but don't take this personal alright?” She nods. “Go to bed.” I then point to the stairs.
“I can't do that! You’re st-”
I shake my head as she stops talking.
“I’ll be fine. I’ve gotten better and this couch is nicer than you think. Please, get some rest.”
She seems very hesitant but soon gives a small nod. I watch as she walks over to the stairs. She takes a single step and turns to face me.
“You’re a great friend Anon. Sweet dreams.” She says as she continues up the stairs.
I can't help the smile on my lips. “Sweet dreams Fluttershy.”
