It was a normal day. Star Note had woken up, gotten dressed, and went to school. He had gone to his normal classes, done his assignments, and then went home. Later that evening, he went to hang out with his pegasus best friend, and only friend, Sapphire. They had been friends for years, although a few months ago, he developed a crush on Sapphire. He tried his best to keep it under wraps, for he thought it would spoil their friendship. It worked. He kept his lips sealed. He wondered if this was a mistake.

"Hey Sapphire!" shouted Star Note.

"Hey Star Note!" Sapphire was a jovial as always. Her dirty blonde mane looked amazing in the light. She smiled at Star Note, revealing a smile so bright that it could easily beat Celestia's sun. The feature that most caught Star Note's eye though, was Sapphire's eyes. They were a brilliant blue. The part that most "got" Star Note however, was the way she looked at him. She would look at him in a way that would brighten his day no matter how bad. Sapphire had always been there for him, and he had always been there for her.

The pair had planned on going to a movie tonight. Just as friends. The movie choice was Sapphire's this time. She chose a mushy romance movie. The evening proceeded normally. They sat, laughed, hugged, and went home. Although, Star Note wanted the evening to last just a while longer. He wanted to be with that stunning mare, Sapphire, just a little more, but that opportunity was gone now.

Star Note sighed to himself, 'Why do I have to be such a wuss? I mean....we've been friends for years, there's no way she would let this come between us.....' He pondered for a moment, 'I'll just call her then....just play it cool'

Brrrrrrnngg, Brrrrrrrnnng,"Hello? Who is this?" Said Sapphire, her angelic voice sounding a little annoyed.

"Hey Sapphire, it's me, Star Note." Start Note was beginning to feel queasy.

"Oh hey! What's up? Something you wanted to talk about?" Sapphire's voice had picked up in enthusiasm immensely.

"Oh well...umm...I just wanted to see how you were doing. So...yeah...how are you?" Star Note wanted to throw up.

"I'm doing just fine! I really enjoyed tonight! Oh and Star? Remember to study for the tests tomorrow!"

"Yeah...okay...well that's all. So..uh...see you tomorrow then! Bye!" Star Note hung up a little too quickly. He felt foolish for that. 'Oh well, I guess I'll do later.' He had been telling himself that for the past 3 weeks. Every time, he'd chicken out. No matter what.

Eventually, he felt the need for sleep. Star Note retired to his bedroom, and passed out as soon as he got onto the bed.

It was a normal day. Once again, Star Note woke up, got dressed and went to school. Today though, was the last day of school. His schedule was packed with test after test. Fortunately, school came easy to Star Note. Each class was the same. He walked in, sat down and took his test. He finished in the first 30 minutes so he had quite a bit of spare time before his next class started. Star Note would mostly draw Sapphire's cutie mark. It was a blue heart with two ponies on each side of it and bits of glitter around it. He knew the story behind it by heart. She got it the day he got his. At the exact same time too. Star Note was playing a piece he had been practicing on his lyre in front of Sapphire. After it was finished, he saw the tears in her eyes. Star Note thought something was wrong, so he rushed over to hug her and comfort her. They sat in silence and just held each other. At that moment, Sapphire got her cutie mark, and Star Note got his. A five pointed star composed of eighth notes. The ring of the period ending bell snapped him out of his thoughts. His next class was with Sapphire.

"Alright class, as you know, we'll be taking our final test today. You will have the entire period to complete the test. Be sure to mark the circles in fully. Make sure to double check all your answers. Do not spend too much time on any one problem. You may not go back into previous sections. After you are finished, turn in your test booklets to me and you may go outside for the rest of the period. Good luck. Ready, begin!" As the teacher finished, Sapphire and Star Note looked at each other. This was their best subject, History. In the first thirty minutes of class, both of them finished. They calmly handed their booklets in together, and went outside. The fresh air was great, but it was a short lived luxury. Time had eluded the pair and they once again had to take a test. Thankfully, this was the last test of the year. Both finished at the thirty minute mark. They were then dismissed from school and decided to go for a walk. The pair walked all day and into the night. They decided to get out of town a little ways and go to the place where they had met, those 5 years ago.

"Remember this place Sapphire?" Star Note whispered softly.

"How could I forget? This was the place our friendship began." Sapphire remembered every detail of that day...or night to be precise. Interestingly enough, it was the day they got out of school.

Sapphire and her friends were celebrating the final bell of school. They came to a meadow outside of town. This was the one of the most beautiful meadows in Ponyville. At the center of it, there was a huge maple tree, and under it sat a sad looking colt.

One of Sapphire's friends said, "Eww, it's that freak. Let's get out of here. He'll infect us with his freakness." All but Sapphire laughed at that, and all but Sapphire left. She walked up to the colt. Upon closer inspection, she saw that he was crying.

"Hey kid, what's wrong? Shouldn't you be out with your friends celebrating?" Then it hit her, this colt didn't have any friends. He was alone.

"Are you just here to mock me too?" The colt sobbed. "If you are then just go away" Saying this only made him cry harder.

"I'm not here to do that. By the way, I don't have anyone to hang out with anymore, so...do you want to celebrate with me?" Sapphire then walked beside him and sat down. She gave him a hug and then told him everything would be okay. "I'll be your friend. Just to prove it, I'm going to spend the entire day with you today and tomorrow!"

The fifth grade Star Note practically exploded with happiness. He finally had a friend. His first friend, and just as she promised, Sapphire spent the entire day with him the next day and the rest of that night. It was the beginning of a long and close friendship.

Sapphire snapped back to the present. "Wow that takes me back. This place really is beautiful." She then turned to Star Note. "I'm glad I met you Star. I really am. I wouldn't trade you for the world. You are the best friend a mare could ask for."

So the two of them spent the night there, just as they did five years ago. Just as they did every year since they met. All was well in the world. Sapphire and Star Note fell asleep just as Luna's reign over the sky ended, and the sun began it's journey upward.

Always keep your friends close. Love and support them through everything, and in turn they will do the same for you. Never forget the love you had.
