Twilight was laying on her bed, struggling to read a book on advanced teleportation spells, but her thoughts kept drifting back to that of her marefriend, Rainbow Dash. Raising a hoof, she slowly pulled the latch on her marefriend’s bedroom door down, and she winced as it clicked open. She pushed the door open a few inches and cringed as the hinges creaked.

With a sigh, Twilight opened the front door with her magic and curiously asked, “So, Rainbow, where are we going?”
“Oh…somewhere nice…” Rainbow trailed off mysteriously, not wanting to ruin the surprise. They walked outside, and Twilight shut the door behind them.
As they started trotted away from the library, Twilight worriedly said, “I sure hope Spike is going to be ok tonight. This is going to be his first night alone…”

As they trotted down the road, Twilight started counting off the few restaurants that they passed, and as they neared the edge of town, the answer suddenly dawned on her.
“Rainbow; are you taking me to Le Café du Soleil Levant?!?” Twilight asked with a gasp, a grin plastered on her face.
“Dang it, Twi!” Rainbow replied with a smile, surprised that she had figured where they were going so quickly. As the restaurant appeared a couple buildings down the road, she asked, “How’d you guess?”
“Oh, I just used simple deductive reasoning. Since we were heading in this direction, we obviously aren’t going to the restaurants on the other side of town, and we’ve already passed a couple restaurants, so we obviously aren’t going to those. With that in mind, only one possibility remained, Le Café du Soleil Levant!” Twilight happily said, a slight skip in her step, giddy that she had correctly guessed where they were going.
“Hehe, you egghead,” Rainbow affectionately tickled Twilight’s ear with a wing as they walked inside the restaurant.
“Greetings, and welcome to Le Café du Soleil Levant!” The host said. “You must be our seven o’clock reservation. Please, Miss Dash and Miss Sparkle, follow me to your table.”
The host led them outside through a side door and brought them to a small candle-lit table, laying the menus on the table. “Your waitress will be right with you, madams.”
Rainbow and Twilight sat down on the cushions and glanced at their menus, looking at the small selection of choices.
“Ummm…Rainbow, how are we going to pay for this?” Twilight hesitantly asked, glancing back down at the menu. “Some of these prices are astronomically high!”
“Don’t worry about that, Twi; I got it covered. I did the owner a big favor on the day the restaurant opened, so he said that my friends and I could eat here for free whenever I wanted.”
“Ah, ok! What did you do?” Twilight asked with interest, placing the menu back down on the table.
“Oh, it was nothing. All I did was keep a massive thunderstorm from hitting Ponyville.” Rainbow said just as her stomach started grumbling.
As if right on cue, a pink unicorn with a violet mane walked up and said, “Good evening, my name is Amethyst Star, and I will be your waitress for tonight! What will you two be drinking?”
“Oh, just water please!” Twilight said. “Thank you!”
“And for you, miss?” The waitress asked, turning towards Rainbow.
“We’ll have your finest wine, please!” Rainbow responded. “And don’t be skimpy, we want the whole bottle!”
“Of course, miss! I’ll be back right away with your drinks.” The waitress turned and walked back into the restaurant.
Opening the menu again, Twilight perused her options and finally decided what she wanted. Placing the menu back down on the table, she said, “So, I think I’m going to get a salad with a side of mixed berries. Do you know what you want?”
Rainbow was just about to respond when the waitress returned with their drinks. Placing the wine bucket on the table, the waitress pulled the bottle out and said, “Tonight, we have a rare treat for you. This is a bottle of Dom Ponignon, aged twenty years, and imported all the way from Prance. Will this wine be suitable?”
“Yep; that’ll do great!” Rainbow responded happily.
The waitress placed the bottle down, placed two glasses in front of Twilight and Rainbow, and quickly filled them up. She placed the bottle back in the bucket of ice and asked, “Have you decided on what you want tonight?”
“Actually, yes!” Twilight happily replied. “I will have a salad with a side of mixed berries.”
The waitress quickly wrote down Twilight’s order in a small notepad and turned towards Rainbow. “And for you, miss?”
“I’ll have what she’s havin’, thanks!” Rainbow said, handing their menus to the waitress.
“Ohhhkayyy! I’ll put your order in right away!” Amethyst Star said as she walked away.
As Twilight watched their waitress walk away, she noticed Bon Bon and Lyra sitting in one of the corners, holding hooves and staring into each other’s eyes, empty dishes sitting in front of them. Collecting their things, they stood up and slowly snaked their way towards the exit, passing Twilight and Rainbow’s table.
“Hey Bon Bon, Lyra!” Twilight happily said. “What’s the special occasion?”
“Oh hey guys! It’s our one-year anniversary, so we decided to splurge and treat ourselves to something nice!” Bon Bon replied with a smile as she glanced lovingly at her marefriend.
With a sly grin, Lyra leaned over, nuzzled her marefriend, and whispered something into her ear, which caused Bon Bon to blush madly.
“Well, it seems that Lyra here is getting a little frisky, so I think we should get going,” Bon Bon hurriedly said, obviously excited from what Lyra had whispered into her ear.

“Hehe, alright…Have a nice night, you two!” Rainbow said.
As they both waved goodbye, Amethyst Star came back with their food. Levitating it off of her back, she gently placed the food in front of them and asked, “Is there anything else I can get for you?”
“Nope; everything’s perfect!” Twilight replied as her stomach started to rumble.
“Alrighty then! Enjoy your meal!”
As their waitress walked away, Twilight levitated her fork from the table, speared a couple leaves, and lifted them into her mouth. As she happily munched away on her dinner, she thought, “I’m not sure if Rainbow got the hint earlier… So, how can I tell her that I’m ready?” As she sat on her cushion, thought after thought popped into her head, each more ridiculous than the last.
Several minutes passed as Twilight secretly worried away, unable to come up with a good way to tell Rainbow that she’s ready. As they both of them finished their dinners, Twilight decided to just mare up and tell Rainbow that she’s ready to go all the way with her tonight.

The two of them exited into a beautiful evening in Ponyville. The sun had just set over the horizon, and a few small clouds were lazily drifting across the sky. Alarmed, Twilight broke away from the Rainbow and frantically looked around, searching for any passerby, but thankfully didn’t see anypony around. “Rainbow!” She angrily hissed, turning her attention back to her marefriend. “We’re in public! What if somepony saw us?!”
“Nopony’s around, Twilight!” Rainbow said confidently, gesturing around the empty street. “See? Nothin’ to worry about!”
“Still…” Twilight calmed down a little, still a little miffed that Rainbow would do something so brash. “You know I’m still a bit nervous about anypony finding out about us…” She trailed off as she started down the road towards her home, her marefriend quickly catching up to her. Not a single word was spoken between the two of them as each of them became lost in their own thoughts. A few minutes passed in silence as they trotted side by side, content to just be in the other’s presence.
“Well Twi, I think it’s about time we take these toys out; it’s already been more than a half hour,” Rainbow said, bumping her marefriend’s flank with her own affectionately as they got closer and closer to the library.
“It would look that way, wouldn’t it?” Twilight smiled as she looked at Rainbow, elated that nopony had found them out. They ducked into an alley and Twilight used her magic to pull the butt plugs out of both of them with a soft pop. She quickly sanitized them using a spell and placed them both in her saddlebag. Returning to the street as if nothing happened, she continued, “I hope Spike did okay last night... I mean, it was his first night alone, remember?”
“Yeah, yeah, I remember. He’s not a baby anymore, though; I’m sure the library’s still in one piece!” Rainbow said reassuringly, giving Twilight a quick nuzzle. “You have nothing to worry about!”
“I sure hope so...” Twilight replied, the library coming into view just down the road. Everything looked the way that they had left it yesterday, and she relaxed just a little bit, thinking that everything was going to turn out alright. The two of them made the way towards the front door and Twilight opened it with her magic, and what they saw next made them stop in their tracks, their jaws hitting the ground in shock.
Stunned, Twilight slowly walked inside to assess the full extent of the chaos, her marefriend close behind. Never before had she imagined that Spike was capable of something like this. He was always so neat, keeping the place in tip-top shape just the way she liked it. She looked about the room for her young assistant but didn’t see him anywhere.
“Spike! Spike, where are you?!?” Twilight called out, intent on giving him the lecture of his life about responsibility. She waited a few seconds and was about to call out for him again when she heard a small yawn come from behind a particularly large pile of books in the back of the room.
“That didn’t sound like Spike...” Rainbow said, confused. She flew to the rear of the library and instead of finding just Spike, she also found Sweetie Belle, Applebloom, and Scootaloo all stirring in their sleep, all sleeping on top of one another in a cute pile.
Twilight wove her way through the horrific mess and trotted up beside her marefriend, groaning as her eyes fell upon the Cutie Mark Crusaders. “I should have known Spike would have invited them over...” she muttered to herself, running a hoof over her face. She sat down next to Rainbow and prodded the sleeping dragon with a hoof to wake him up.
As the three young fillies slept on, Spike groggily opened his eyes and looked around, quickly waking up as adrenaline was pumped into his veins at the sight of the purple unicorn. He started hyperventilating as he saw Twilight staring down at him angrily. “Twilight! What are you doing back so early?!” His small head darted back and forth, as if searching for a way to escape. Climbing to his feet, he silently stared at the floor and started shuffling his feet, afraid to look at the pissed-off unicorn.
“Spike...?” Twilight started, restrained anger clear in her voice. “Tell me, in no uncertain terms, exactly what happened here.”
“Uhm...well, you see...” Spike nervously said, trying to come up with a good explanation. He nudged the rest of his friends awake to try and help him out, who quickly woke up when they saw Twilight and Rainbow.
“Twilight! What-” Applebloom started to say before Twilight abruptly cut her off.
“Applebloom, I’ll get to you and your friends in a minute,” Twilight said, her eyes never leaving Spike’s. Without skipping a beat, she continued. “Now, Spike, what did you four do while I was gone for the night?”
Spike gulped before he started his explanation. “Well...after I finished cleaning last night, I got bored pretty quickly.” Spike debated coming up with a lie to try and get out of this, but the damage was already done and they had been caught red-hoofed. “So, let’s see... I went for a walk and eventually found the Cutie Mark Crusaders hanging around the market. So, to make a long story short, I told them that I was going to be the only one home for the night, and they said that they wanted to try and get their cutie marks in…” Spike paused, knowing that Twilight was going to be disappointed in him, “in partying.”
Twilight groaned and rolled her eyes, knowing exactly where this was going. Spike took a deep breath and continued.
“So after getting permission from their parents to have a ‘sleepover,’ we all came back here and...well… we had some fun. We kinda went through all of the ice cream in the house, and then we got some more from the store around the corner. I don’t think I need to say this, but we all had a pretty bad time a little bit later.” He looked about the library and the chaos that he and his friends had caused. “I’m sorry, Twilight; we really meant to clean up the library before you got back, but we all got a little sick from eating too much ice cream, and we all sorta forgot about it...” Spike finished, still shuffling his feet shamefully, knowing full well that he was gonna get an earful from Twilight.
During Spike’s explanation, the Cutie Mark Crusaders had been creeping away from Twilight and the young dragon, hoping that they could get out of trouble. They had quietly made their way behind the couch and were just out of Twilight’s sight, the open door only a few meters away.
“Alright ya’ll, we only have a little bit left to go, so on three!” Applebloom whispered dramatically. “One...two...three!” The three of them jumped up and ran towards the door, but Rainbow landed in front of them, blocking their path to freedom.
“And where do you three little fillies think you’re going?” Rainbow asked as she sat down, her wings still spread. “You guys made this mess, so now you have to clean it; no getting out of it!”
“Ugh, you know, she’s right, guys...” Scootaloo said in defeat, her shoulders slumping. “We might as well get started...”
“Hey!” Sweetie Belle piped up happily, her voice cracking. “Maybe we can get our cutie marks in house-cleaning!”
The three fillies’ eyes widened in excitement and they all jumped into the air together, yelling in unison, “Yay, Cutie Mark Crusaders House Cleaners!”
After sitting around and doing nothing productive for the first half hour, Rainbow became incredibly bored watching the four troublemakers clean the library. Sidling up close to Twilight, she lowered her voice just enough so that the three fillies and Spike couldn’t hear her, and she said, “Say Twi, while you watch over these four, I’m gonna go run some errands. Since you passed our little ‘challenge,’ want to meet me at my place around seven tonight for a little fun?” She snuck a look at the troublemakers, saw that they weren’t looking in their direction, and quickly nuzzled Twilight just under the cheek affectionately. She sat back, awaiting her marefriend’s response, her ears pinning back.
Twilight glanced up into space as she thought for a moment, trying to remember if she had anything on her schedule for later that day. Thankfully, she remembered that she had blocked off the next couple days just so that she could spend time with Rainbow once she got back from her trip. “Hmm… I don’t see why not; seven it is then!”
“Awesome…” Rainbow murmured, pulling Twilight a brief winghug. She hopped into the air and flew out the door, leaving a faint rainbow trail behind her.
With her marefriend gone, that left Twilight with nothing to do but to relax on the couch and watch the four clean her home spotless. Throughout the entire process, Spike made sure that each book was put back in its rightful place, knowing that Twilight would only make him reorganize the books later if they were put up in the wrong order. And after a few uneventful hours, the library was finally back to Twilight’s high standards of cleanliness.
“Whew!” Scootaloo exclaimed as she pushed the last book into place. She hopped off of Spike’s back and collapsed on the floor, exhausted from cleaning the expansive library. The other two fillies collapsed beside them, both in similar states of exhaustion.
Seeing that the Cutie Mark Crusaders and her assistant were finished with cleaning, Twilight stood up to inspect their work. She methodically went through each and every shelf to make sure that each book was where it was supposed to be, and seeing that everything was up to her standards, she said, “Alright you four, you can go.”
“Thanks, Twilight… sorry about the mess,” Applebloom said apologetically as they all ran out the front door, eager to get on with another day of crusading.
Over the next few hours, Twilight did anything she could to make the clock go faster short of time-traveling into the future. She was sprawled out on her bed, trying to study a little bit more from her advanced teleportation spells book, but she kept getting distracted as her thoughts kept drifting back to what was going to happen later that night.
Giving up, she slammed the book closed with her magic, groaning in frustration. With what was going to happen soon, there was just no way in Tartarus that she could concentrate enough to get any real studying done. She glanced up at the clock and saw that she still had just under an hour to meet Rainbow at her cloudhouse for another night of fun, and suddenly images of what they were going to do suddenly flashed in her mind, starting to make her feel a little worked up. She thought about taking care of her growing need, but she instead chose to save herself for later that night, knowing that it would be well worth the wait. Her stomach grumbling in hunger, she got up and trotted downstairs to make herself a small dinner, pushing the temptation from her mind, eager to get to her marefriend’s place.
There is a First Time for Everything
Nearly an hour later, Twilight was galloping towards her marefriend’s place, the floating cloudhouse getting closer and closer with each and every hoofstep. The sun was just setting over the horizon, its light casting off Rainbow’s house in the distance in a beautiful shimmering orange glow.
“Rainbow! Rainbow, are you up there?” Twilight called out as she came to a halt under her marefriend’s cloudhouse, lust clouding her mind. Saying that she was eager to spend another passion-filled night would be an understatement; there was nothing that she wouldn’t trade for another mind-blowing night with Rainbow. Looking up, she sat down and waited impatiently for her marefriend to respond, her tail swishing side to side in anxious excitement.
She didn’t have to wait long, because a few seconds later she saw a rainbow-colored blur speed out of the house and dive towards the ground. She watched with bated breath as Rainbow pulled up at the last second, violently flapping her wings to stop at a casual hover in front of her.
“Hey Twi! Ready for another fun night?” Rainbow asked as she settled onto the ground, giving her marefriend an affectionate nuzzle.
“Oh, I most definitely am!” Twilight giggled, Rainbow’s soft fur tickling her nose.
“Well, you know the drill!” Rainbow said as she walked behind Twilight. She placed her forelegs under Twilight’s and held on tightly as she started to flap her wings, pulling the two of them into the air.
Twilight always enjoyed seeing Equestria from the sky, especially with Rainbow flying her higher and higher. Even though she was a unicorn and not used to flying, she always felt safe and secure whenever she was with her marefriend. She knew that absolutely nothing could go wrong when they were together, and she trusted Rainbow with her life.
As they reached the front porch, Rainbow did the same thing as yesterday, letting Twilight down slowly onto the clouds that held up her house. But little did she know, Twilight had forgotten to renew the cloud walking spell. Since she had been distracted all day because of the little fiasco at the library, the thought of renewing the cloud walking spell had not crossed her mind. Had Twilight not been distracted, she would have remembered that the cloud walking spell wears off when the user returns to the ground. Rainbow let her marefriend down carefully, and when it felt like the cloud was supporting Twilight’s weight, she let go, flying through the open front door to land inside her foyer.
Twilight knew something was wrong the instant that Rainbow let go of her. As soon as her front hooves hit the cloud with a soft thump, her rear hooves suddenly broke through the cloud below her, her barrel slamming into the white fluff. “Rainbow, something’s wrong!” Twilight cried out in desperation as she felt the cloud slowly start to fall apart beneath her, her hind legs scrambling to find purchase on anything that would stop her from falling, but alas, there wasn’t anything but the air beneath her. She scrambled with her front hooves to try and find something; anything to grab onto. Her breath quickened as she glanced down, the ground several hundred feet away. With a scream of terror, she lost what little grip she had left on the cloud and slipped through the hole, plummeting towards the hard and unforgiving ground.
When she heard her marefriend cry out for help, Rainbow turned around, only to find a pony-sized hole where Twilight had just been standing. “Twilight!” she yelled as she dove through the hole after her falling marefriend. She flapped her wings as hard and as fast as she could, but she was afraid that it might not be enough to save Twilight; she was just too far away!
Rainbow grew closer and closer to Twilight with each and every flap of her powerful wings, desperation and fear giving her the strength she needed. “Almost there!!” she thought.
“I have to try! If not for myself, for Dashie!” Twilight furiously thought as she charged her magic in her horn. She tried casting the spell but nothing happened, leaving her in the same predicament. That spell was the only way that she could save herself; there was nothing else she could do.
“Rainbow, I’m so sorry…” Twilight sobbed into the wind as she closed her eyes, knowing that the end was near. Just as she was about to hit the ground, somepony smashed into her, carrying her away from the ground and certain death. Twilight opened her eyes and looked up, seeing the strain on Rainbow’s face as she pulled up with all her might. She knew that the speed at which they were flying was putting an incredible amount of stress on her marefriend’s wings. The wind stinging her eyes, she looked back down towards the ground, watching as everything below her became smaller and smaller. A few seconds later, Twilight saw that they were flying back towards Rainbow’s house, so she promptly cast the cloud walking spell on herself.
As Twilight’s horn glowed for a couple brief seconds, Rainbow glanced down at her marefriend and saw that she was silently crying to herself. She didn’t blame her, especially after what she just went through. She flew the both of them through the open front door and onto the couch. “Twi, is your cloud spell on?” Rainbow asked, wanting to be one-hundred percent sure that Twilight wouldn’t fall through her floor again. As her marefriend silently nodded, Rainbow gently put her down on the couch and sat down next to her, pulling her into an embrace with her wings, holding her quivering body tightly.
“Twi, don’t you ever scare me like that again!” Rainbow said as her tears started to flow. “I don’t know what I would have done without you…” She tried to blink the tears away but couldn’t help it. She had come so close to losing the love of her life all due to some silly mistake.
“I’m sorry, Rainbow… I was just so excited to come here tonight that I completely forgot to use that spell…” Twilight said as she returned Rainbow’s hug, pulling her closer, thankful to be alive. “If you hadn’t caught me, I could have...could have…” She trailed off, unable to finish her sentence as she realized just how close she had come to death. She closed her eyes and laid her head on Rainbow’s shoulder, crying silently.
“There, there, Twi…everything’s all right now…” Rainbow said softly, massaging Twilight’s back with her wings.
Twilight sat in Rainbow’s loving embrace for several minutes, unable to do anything else, her shot nerves getting the best of her. Her thoughts drifted back to a book of romantic quotes that she had discovered right after she had started dating Rainbow. “‘Love isn’t meant to be hidden, and life is much too short to live in fear.’”
She repeated those words in her head over and over, their meaning finally sinking in. “I almost died today… Hell, I just saw first-hoof that my life could end at any moment! I could die next week or the week after that, and I don’t want to live my life in fear, worrying about what everypony would think of me if they found out I’m a fillyfooler. I love Rainbow Dash, and nothing is ever going to change that!”
Anger welling up inside her, Twilight decided that it was unfair to both herself and her friends that she was hiding the love of her life from everypony. Slowly pulling away from Rainbow, she took a deep breath to calm her racing heart, looked into her marefriend’s eyes, and said, “Rainbow, I...I think it’s time we tell our friends about…” Rainbow’s eyes widened, hoping that she was hearing Twilight correctly. “...about us.” Twilight finished with a nervous smile.
“You…” Rainbow cleared her throat. “You sure about that, Twilight? I really wouldn’t want to pressure you into something you wouldn’t want to do.”
Twilight waited a couple moments before responding, knowing in both her heart and mind that this was what she wanted. “Yes. It isn’t fair that I’m making you hide our relationship from everypony, and quite frankly, it would be pretty nice if we could stop hiding.” She paused, a small smile making its way onto her face, blushing madly. “And you know...I wouldn’t mind sharing another kiss with you in public…”
Rainbow was so happy that she could barely speak; this was what she had wanted ever since she had started dating Twilight. Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to show off a mare as beautiful and intelligent as her? She’s funny, really fun to hang with, and every time that she’s with her, it’s as if everything is perfect. “Twi...you…you don’t know how happy I am right now!” She pulled Twilight into a bear hug and squeezed as tightly as she could, wrapping her wings around her marefriend’s back.
“Ohhh, this feels good…” Twilight thought as she felt her marefriend’s incredibly soft feathers start to massage her back. “I could get used to this…” After a minute, she reluctantly pulled back and playfully poked Rainbow’s shoulder. “Well, nearly falling to my death was a bit of a rush...” She smiled, giggling at the absurdity of what she just said.
“Yeeeeah…that’s the understatement of the century,” Rainbow couldn’t help but join her marefriend in laughter, and pretty soon they were both laughing uproariously, holding onto each other for support.
“Hehehe, whew… I really needed that,” Twilight said as their laughter finally died down. She lay down on the couch before continuing. “I just can’t believe I almost died.”
“Yeah, same here,” Rainbow said as she lay down beside her marefriend, laying a warm wing over her. “I promise I will always be there for you, no matter what.”

She couldn’t bear to meet their gazes, choosing to close her eyes, waiting for the imminent backlash from her friends. She had no idea what they were going to think of her now, but that didn’t matter; what truly mattered was that she and Rainbow loved each other, and nothing could ever change that.
“She fell for me, and I fell for her,” Rainbow spoke up as she slid over to sit beside Twilight, laying a wing over her marefriend. Twilight gave her a quick nuzzle in thanks; she hadn’t wanted to do this all alone.
Everypony’s eyes widened at this juicy tidbit of news. “That’s wonderful, you two!” Rarity quickly exclaimed, an ecstatic smile spreading across her face.
“Yay! Now we HAVE to throw a party for you guys!” Pinkie yelled a little too loudly, eliciting a nervous chuckle from Twilight.
“So...you guys don’t hate me because I’m a fillyfooler?” Twilight asked hopefully, a small modicum of confidence returning to her.
“Dear, why would we hate you for such a trivial matter? Seeing as mares outweigh the number of stallions by fifteen to one, it comes as no surprise to see female couples pop up everywhere. It’s pretty hard to find a stallion these days, especially a good one…” Rarity trailed off, a hint of regret tainting her voice as she remembered the events of the Grand Galloping Gala.
“Oh not all, Twilight,” Fluttershy said in her soft, caring tone, smiling contentedly. She had feared that Twilight’s announcement was going to be something worse. “That’s actually quite nice to hear!” She stood up and pulled the two lovers into a hug, followed closely by everypony else.
Twilight was ecstatic. After stressing out over something that turned out to be inconsequential, she felt extremely relieved that her closest friends accepted her for who she was. After several moments, Spike came back from whatever reckless adventure he and the Cutie Mark Crusaders had just gone on, looking like he’d just taken a swim through a pig sty.
Before he could even greet anypony, Twilight trotted up to him happily, saying, “Hey Spike, I need you to take a letter! I’ve learned probably the most important lesson friendship yet, and I have to tell Princess Celestia at once!”
Perturbed by her enthusiasm, Spike grabbed the parchment and quill, waiting for Twilight to begin.
“*Ahem*
Dear Princess Celestia,
This is probably, no, it is, the most important and personal letter I’ve sent you thus far. I’ll get straight to the point; I have found love with one of my very close friends, Rainbow Dash. Ever since you sent me to Ponyville to learn the magic of friendship, I always wondered if there was anything more than that. In the past few months, I have come to realize that the next level of friendship is love, something that I never knew that I was craving for.
We love each other, and we’ve had some really nice times together, and I’m sure the future holds bright things for us.
Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle”
“Alright Spike, send it!” Twilight said, trotting back over to where Rainbow was patiently waiting for her. She laid down next to her, pushing her coat against her’s, humming contentedly as Rainbow wrapped a warm wing around her.
“Done! So I take it that you just told everypony about you two being together?”
“Wait, you knew?!” Rarity exclaimed, hitting the floor indignantly with her forehooves. “And you didn’t tell me?!”
“Well, they did want to keep it a secret…” Spike said, shrugging as everypony else giggled around him. He took a seat on Twilight’s empty cushion.
“So how long have you been together?” Rarity asked, a silly smile plastered on her face. She absolutely loved things like this, the fact that two of her close friends had found love with each other was an enormous deal to her. She waited impatiently as Twilight and Rainbow glanced at each other, silently deciding who should respond.
“Umm… I think we’re coming up on three months, right Twi?” Rainbow glanced at her marefriend, smiling when Twilight nodded, agreeing with her statement. “So yeah, about three months.”
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Pinkie asked, cocking her head to the side in confusion. “I could have thrown you two cute lovebirds a party a long time ago!”
“Yeah, sorry about that, Pinks. I’ve been wanting to tell you guys about my awesome marefriend here, but Twi was a little afraid of how everypony would react.” She nuzzled Twilight affectionately, eliciting a small chuckle from the unicorn. “See Twi, there’s nothing to worry about!”
“Hehe, I guess not, I don’t know why I was-” Twilight was cut off when Spike suddenly burped up a letter. Knowing that it had to be a response from Princess Celestia, she unfurled it with her magic and held it before her and Rainbow. She silently read,
“Twilight,
Both you and Rainbow must come to Canterlot to discuss this matter with me; it is of grave importance that you come immediately. ”
Rainbow and Twilight sat perplexed, both staring at the letter hanging in the air before them. Even after reading it several times, Twilight still felt a little apprehensive. The letter made it sound like the princess wasn’t happy with this news, and it made her worry. What if she didn’t approve of her relationship? “That doesn’t matter; I’ll just explain why I love her, and why I’ll never leave her for the world.”
“Uhh, Twi? What’s up with the letter? I thought Princess Celestia would have been happy to hear about us...” Rainbow said, a little apprehension tinting her usual confident voice.
“I...I don’t know, Rainbow,” Twilight said nervously. “Wait! What if she thinks Rainbow will distract me from my studies?” A million other thoughts popped into her head, each based on an unfounded fear, making her close her eyes and groan in annoyance. “Everything’s going to be okay…” she thought to herself. “I have Rainbow, and that’s all that matters…”
“Twilight?” Rainbow nudged her marefriend. “You okay?”
“Huh?” Twilight snapped out of her reverie. “Oh, yes, I’m fine.” Standing up, she spoke to the rest of her friends. “Guys, I’m sorry that I have to cut this short, but Princess Celestia has requested that Rainbow and I see her right away.”
“Is everything alright, dear?” Rarity asked as she and others started to leave, sensing her friend’s discomfort.
“I- I hope so,” Twilight said, trying to put as much confidence into her voice as possible. Turning to her assistant, she said, “Spike, can you hold down the library while I’m gone? I don’t know how long we'll be, but I’ll send you a letter if it’s going to be more than a few days.”
As everypony walked out of the library, Twilight grabbed her saddlebags from her bedroom and returned to the main room. “Do you want to stop by your place to get some things for the trip, Dashie?” she asked as the two of them walked outside.
“Nah, I’m good. I have everything I’ll ever need, Twi… you.” Rainbow said a little sheepishly. She was still a little shy about showing affection in public, but she was slowly getting over that fear. Hearing the train whistle blow on the other side of town, signaling that it was about to leave, she said, “Oh horseapples, we’re gonna miss the train if we don’t hurry!” With a cheeky grin, she picked Twilight up and flew as quickly as she could, making their eyes water from the air whipping past them. Landing on the train platform seconds later, they bought their tickets and jumped on the train just as it started to pull out of the station.
Standing in front of the closed throne room doors, Twilight was shivering from the fear of what her mentor was going to tell her. Rainbow sat next to her, staring at the imposing doorway, wondering what was going to happen to the two of them on the other side. “So, Twi…”
Suddenly, one of the throne room doors cracked open, revealing one of Princess Celestia’s royal guards. “The Princess wants to talk to the pegasus Rainbow Dash first, miss Sparkle.”
“Wait, why?!?” Twilight asked, adrenaline pumping through her veins. She had not expected this in the slightest.
“Can we have a moment?” Rainbow asked the guard, waiting a little impatiently for him to close the door. As it shut a few seconds later, she softly said, “No matter what happens, I will always love you. And don’t worry, Twi, everything’s gonna be alright, I promise you that.”
Sniffling slightly, Twilight pulled Rainbow into a hug that could crush steel. A few seconds later Rainbow broke the hug and pushed the door open, leaving Twilight all alone with her worries.
A hurricane of conflicted feelings and fears raged inside Twilight as she worriedly paced back and forth in front of the throne room doors. “What are they talking about? Maybe I can...no, that wouldn’t work. Oh! Maybe I can...darn, that wouldn’t work with either.” Several minutes passed as she wore a track of her hoofsteps into the fine rug under her hooves.
As she was just about to barge in and stop whatever it was from happening, the throne room door opened and the guard from before motioned for her to come in. Pushing both doors open roughly with her magic, she galloped down the large room to stand before Princess Celestia.
As she stood there panting, two things registered in her mind. First and foremost, Rainbow was sitting off to the side, a slightly worried look on her face. Secondly, the princess was looking down at her, her face devoid of any expressions save for something she didn’t recognize. Those two facts led Twilight to come to the worst possible conclusion.
“Princess, please let me explain!” Twilight started, her tone full of worry and fear. “I-”
“There is no need, my dearest student.”
“Huh?” Twilight asked, completely confused.
With a warm smile, Princess Celestia ruffled her wings and continued, “Rainbow Dash made a very convincing argument as to why you two should be together, Twilight. It’s pretty apparent that she loves you with all her heart, and I’m glad that you two have found love in each other.”
“Wait...whaaa…” Twilight sat down, her mouth agape as she stared at the princess in shock. She had been expecting to fight for Rainbow, and all of the arguments that she had thought of suddenly faded away into nothingness. “But- but your letter! It sounded like you didn’t approve of us being together!” As she spoke, Rainbow flew back to sit beside her, giving her marefriend a small nuzzle on the cheek.
“Ah yes, about that. I just wanted to offer you my congratulations in person, and to give you this…” She floated a folded piece of parchment from behind her and laid it in front of Twilight. “But please, don’t open it until you two are in somewhere more...private,” Celestia said with a small chuckle, blushing slightly. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have other matters to attend to.”
With a short bow, Rainbow and Twilight trotted out of the throne room and back out into the hallway. “Oh, Dashie, I’m so relieved that she approved of us!” Twilight happily said as she hugged her marefriend. Rainbow returned the hug, pulling Twilight closer with her wings.
“Hehe, me too, Twi, me too…” Rainbow whispered, relieved that everything was alright. Chuckling to herself, she remembered what she had done the instant she had gone inside the throne room. She had flown straight to the princess to hover right in front of her, and she had proceeded to give her an earful as to why she loved Twilight. As she thought, she figured that she shouldn’t have jumped to the conclusion that the princess didn’t approve of her relationship with Twilight on unbased fears. “Hey, what did Princess Celestia give you?” she asked, breaking their hug.
“I- I don’t know… Let’s see!” Twilight cleared her throat as she unfolded the note that she had tucked into her saddlebag. Levitating it before her, she read it herself silently. As her eyes went wide in surprise, she checked her saddlebag and gasped in surprise, letting the letter fall to the ground.
Snatching it from the air, Rainbow quickly read the contents of the note.
“My dearest student, if you and your marefriend wish to have some extra ‘fun’ I highly suggest these specialty shops, as they’ve given both my sister and I great pleasure in the past.
P.S. Check your saddlebag; I left the two of you a small gift.”
“A small gift? Twilight, what does she...woah.” Rainbow dropped the letter and glanced down into Twilight’s saddlebag, finding a nicely sized bag of bits sitting in between a couple books. She looked up and met Twilight’s sly gaze.
“You know what this means, Dashie?” Twilight asked in a sultry voice, lowering her eyelids slightly. She continued without waiting for Rainbow to respond. “This means that our love life is about to get a lot spicier…”
