Chapter I – A day out (Prologue)
It was another normal day in Ponyville; everyone was going about their usual business as they would normally do. The market sellers were in the market selling their various wares of produce or knick knacks, the children were in school and Fluttershy was walking into the town to meet up with Rarity for their weekly get together over at the spa. She was wearing a yellow summer dress that stopped just before her ankles and hugged her figure perfectly, and she was wearing a pair of white slip on shoes. She took a seat at a nearby café where she was going to first meet with Rarity, and a waiter with slick grey hair and a neatly trimmed moustache came over to her a smile on his face.
“Good morning Miss Fluttershy, would you like your usual herbal tea?” He asked her.
“Good morning Java, and yes please Rarity will be here soon so could you bring her some tea as well please…if that’s ok with you that is.” She replied with a smile.
“Of course Miss Fluttershy, won’t be long.” He replied with a grin.
The waiter gave a small bow and headed back inside the café; Fluttershy turned her gaze over the town and began to let her mind wander with a smile whilst she waited for Rarity to show up, in her trance like state she didn’t realise she was staring at Caramel who was manning a nearby stall filled with caramel apples, his specialty. He saw her staring and smirked and straightened his hair and dusted his shirt, happy with his quick smartening up he quickly walked over to Fluttershy with confidence in his walk.
‘Play it smooth Caramel, nice and smooth’ He thought to himself.
“Well hello there Fluttershy.” He said leaning on the table with a smile.
“Hmm? Oh H-hello Caramel.” Fluttershy replied snapping out of her trance.
“So how are you today then?” He started to lean in slowly.
“F-fine…and y-yourself?” She leant away from him slowly blushing lightly.
“Well I’m fine thank you.” He purred. “I couldn’t help but notice you staring…at me…at my stall.”
“W-was I? Oh I-I’m so sorry I didn’t m-mean to.” She quickly apologised.
‘Cute, so very cute.’ Caramel thought internally smirking.
“Please, there no need to apologise, just answer me one question.”
“W-what’s that?”
“Would you like to maybe go out for dinner tonight?”
“O-oh that does sound lovely b-but I’m afraid I’m rather busy…” She said rubbing her arm.
‘Damn, try again Caramel you got this.’
“Oh…well how about some other time?” He asked hopefully leaning in.
Before he could answer Java returned and placed the two cups of tea, he raised his eyebrow at Caramel who nervously smiled.
“Can I help you sir?” He asked him.
“U-uh no, no thank you.” Caramel replied.
“Is he bothering you at all-” He was interrupted as Rarity sat down at the table wearing a large sun hat and a white summer dress. “Ah Miss Rarity good morning to you.” He smiled.
“Why hello Java, how are you this fine morning?”
“I can’t complain, the wife will be home from visiting her sister this evening so I have that to look forward to if you know what I mean.” He gave a cheeky waggle of his eye brows that made Fluttershy and Rarity giggle.
“Oh Java, not in front of two young ladies.” She giggled. “And I’m so sorry I’m late Fluttershy darling I just couldn’t decide which hat to wear!”
“O-oh that’s ok Rarity, I like it it’s very pretty.” Fluttershy smiled at her.
As the girls continued talking Caramel stood there blinking and with his mouth agape slightly unsure as to what to really say now, Rarity say this and pressed a finger into his chin closing his mouth.
“Can we help you Caramel?” she asked him batting her eyelids.
“U-uhm no I mean yes I mean…I was going to ask Fluttershy…you know what, I think I hear my cart calling for me. I’ll see you two later on bye!” He quickly bowed and briskly walked back to his cart.
Rarity paid Java two bits for the drinks and thanked him; she gave a coy smirk before turning back to Fluttershy resting her chin on her hands.
The two begun to have a conversation as normal with Rarity being the one who was taking the most, she would talk about her clients and new ideas she had for outfit designs and how Sweetie Belle was doing at school and Fluttershy politely smiled and listening, occasionally answering a question Rarity would ask about her animals and how she was. In recent meet ups, Rarity tried to help Fluttershy as she put it ‘hook a man’ but Fluttershy was never really up to it. Making excuses or politely declining, Caramel was the fifth man she had turned down and Rarity wanted to know why.
“So Fluttershy dear, yet another handsome young man turned down.” She idly stirred her tea with a spoon. “Why is that?”
“I just…I mean I…I’m just waiting for the right guy that’s all.” Fluttershy replied taking a sip from her cup.
“But darling how will you know if you don’t give anyone a chance?” Rarity asked as she leant back in her chair.
“I’ll just know when I know.” She replied with a smile.
“Oh Fluttershy, that sounds like it should belong in a romantic novel and-“She looked at her friends innocent smile and smiled back. “It sounds…wonderful.”
The two finished their teas and thanked Java when he came to collect the cups, departing from the café the two girls walked down the main road in Ponyville and headed towards the spa for an afternoon of pampering, all expenses paid for by Rarity. Along the way Rarity continued to talk about her ideas and new clothes whilst Fluttershy’s mind wandered once more into her own thoughts.
‘I already have feelings for someone…but it’s never going to be…’ she thought to herself and sighed.
“Is something wrong Fluttershy?
Fluttershy snapped out of her trance to find that the two were outside of the spa and blinked, she turned to Rarity and rubbed her hands out of embarrassment.
“Sorry Rarity, I was just thinking…”
“That’s ok Fluttershy; now let’s get on with being pampered!” Rarity declared pulling Fluttershy into the spa. “Aloe, the usual please!”
A woman behind the desk smiled and opened a door for the two as Fluttershy was dragged by Rarity into the next room.
“Spike have you seen my alchemy book?” Twilight called from the basement followed by the sound of something crashing.
“Uh…no gimme a sec and I’ll look for it.” Spike replied.
Spike began to go through the book shelves trying to find Twilight’s alchemy book but kept getting distracted every so often by the sounds of Twilight frantically trying to find something, he eventually found one of the five books on alchemy Twilight owned and scratched his head trying to figure out where the other ones where, or if Twilight wanted the other ones instead of the one he had.
“Hey Twi…which one do you need exactly?”
“You know which one Spike! It’s the one I’ve been reading all week!” Twilight shouted from the basement.
“Yeah reeeeeal helpful Twilight, you’ve been in the basement all week so how…would I know…” He paused for a moment. “Twilight, is the book in the basement?”
“Of course it isn’t, I would have noticed.”
Twilight suddenly stopped talking and Spike heard another series of sounds of rustling paper, then it stopped and there was a short pause before Twilight spoke up again.
“…Found it.”
Spike slapped his face and sighed grumbling to himself as he headed to the kitchen putting his hands into his purple hoody.
“Sometimes Twilight, you’d lose your head if it wasn’t-“Spike was interrupted as he belched up a scroll and caught it in his hand. “Hey Twilight, Princess Celestia’s sent you a scroll!”
“Really?” Twilight eagerly shouted as she ran up from the basement, her glasses were slightly askew and her white shirt and purple jacket were covered in dust.
Spike handed her the scroll and she eagerly tore of the seal and began to read it. Spike, uninterested in the contents decided it was high time for a mid-afternoon snack and licked his lips, remembering he had some cupcakes with emeralds in them in the kitchen. As he entered the kitchen he heard Twilight let out a loud gasp before she burst into the kitchen nearly sending the door of its hinges and startling the young dragon. Her eyes were wide and she was gritting her teeth almost as if she had seen a ghost.
“What is it Twilight, what’s wrong?” Spike asked concernedly.
“Oh it’s the worst thing ever Spike!” She replied.
“What is?”
“Just the most awful thing!” She continued.
“What is?” Spike asked with a hint of annoyance.
“And of all the worst things that could happen.” As she continued Spike walked round behind her. “This is the! Worst! Possible! Thing!-OWCH!!
Twilight jumped and rubbed her rear where Spike had pinched her, his face showing his annoyance.
“Twilight calm down, your sounding like Rarity now what’s the matter?”
Still rubbing her rear she gave him an annoyed glare before handing him the scroll and he gave it a glance over, muttering under his breath as he read it to himself.
“Dear Twilight Sparkle…yadda yadda…coming to visit…yadda yadda…will be bringing a special guest…yadda yadda…hope to see the seven of you all well tomorrow…yadda yadda…Yours, Princess Celestia.” Spike finished reading and cocked his eyebrow at her. “So…what’s the big deal?”
“Don’t you get it Spike?! Princess Celestia is coming. Tomorrow!”
“…And?”
“And? AND?! We have so much to do! We need to inform the Mayor, set out a welcoming committee and and-OWCH!” Twilight jumped again as Spike pinched her rear again. “SPIKE DON’T DO THAT!”
“Sorry Twilight but you’re freaking out, I’m sure the Princess won’t mind if there isn’t a massive welcoming committee. She didn’t seem to care the last few times she visited.”
Spike had a point, the last few times the Princess had come to visit Twilight she hadn’t cared there was no welcoming committee of the townsfolk to welcome her. She sighed and flopped into a chair and smiled.
“You’re right Spike…but we still need to inform the others.”
“I can go tell Rarity personally!” He grinned and turned to leave.
“Ok Spike you do that.” She giggled. “Can you also tell the others? Oh and Spike?”
Spike stopped in his tracks and turned around.
“Don’t think I have forgotten you pinching my butt like that…” She said almost coldly and glared at him.
Spike gulped and quickly excused himself from the house, Twilight waited till he had closed the door before giggling to herself.
‘Works every time…’
“Thank you for coming, same time next week Miss Rarity?” Aloe asked.
“Yes please darling, until next week!” Rarity replied smiling.
Fluttershy and Rarity gave Aloe a wave goodbye before leaving the spa, both of them feeling more refreshed.
“Well Fluttershy dear, I need to head back home. I have some work to do, same time next week at the café?” she asked giving Fluttershy a hug.
“Ok Rarity, thank you again.” Fluttershy replied.
“Think nothing of it, take care-“She stopped as she turned her head catching something out of the corner of her eye. “Oh hello Spike.”
Fluttershy turned round to see Spike approaching them; his cheeks were a little red from where he had been jogging. When he caught up to them he stopped and bent over resting his hands on his knees and began to catch his breath, the girls patiently waited for the young boy to catch his breath giggling softly.
“H-hey Rarity, Fluttershy, I got a message from Twilight.”
“And what’s that Spikey-Wikey.” Rarity cooed pinching his cheeks causing him to blush.
“W-well…Princess Celestia is coming tomorrow and s-she’s brining a guest with her and she wants us to be there.” Spike grinned goofily staring dreamily at Rarity.
Fluttershy looked between Spike and Rarity who were both smiling at one another and coughed softly, seeing that they hadn’t heard her she tried again. But once again they hadn’t heard her, she sighed and took a deep inhale before coughing as loud as she could, this time they heard her.
“Uhm...d-didn’t you say you had some work you wanted to do Rarity?”
“Hmm? Why yes that’s right darling! I nearly forgot.” She gave Spike a kiss on his cheek making him blush more still grinning with a goofy expression. “Goodbye Spikey-Wikey, goodbye Fluttershy.”
Rarity gave them both a wave and headed off towards the carousel boutique slightly swaying her hips leaving Spike to stare after her happily sighing to himself, Fluttershy giggled and poked his head.
“Spike, it’s not nice to…stare at a lady like that…”
Spike blinked and snapped out of it and his entire face went red, he shook his head and bowed to Fluttershy.
“I-I’m sorry I wasn’t staring at her…you know I-I was just.” He stopped when he heard Fluttershy giggling again. “You were just teasing weren’t you?” he asked raising a brow.
Fluttershy giggled and nodded to him, he sighed and rolled his eyes before joining in with her giggling. He said his goodbyes to Fluttershy and went on his way to go tell the others, Fluttershy watched him go with a smile before turning round and headed towards her cottage.
Luna wondered through the orchards of Ponyville her dark blue regal dress blowing behind her like her hair, she was doing her duty as the Princess of the night and watching over the dreams of her and Celestia’s subjects. Although it was morning the person’s dream she was in currently was still asleep and Luna could feel that something was off about it, something that she hadn’t noticed in other dreams and wanted to investigate it before she retired for the day. As she came to the edge of the orchard and to some fields she heard a man chuckle, one she thought she would never hear again.
“My my…you seem to be more…assertive then I last remembered.” Discord purred.
‘Discord!’ Luna thought and began to charge up her magic running to where she heard the chuckle.
“And I don’t remember you being this…gentlemanly before.” A female voice giggled.
‘Wait…that voice.’
Luna came to a halt and blinked, she used her powers to turn herself invisible and crept closer to the two voices. As she came closer and closer she had to stop herself from gasping loudly when she saw who it was, there in the middle of the field on a picnic blanket, was Discord and Fluttershy…in each other’s arms.
‘What is this trickery? This can’t be… She thought as she watched them. ‘It is…its Fluttershy’s dream! But why is she dreaming about Discord in such a way?’
She watched them for a while more trying to come to a conclusion why she would be dreaming this, her eyes widened as Discord and Fluttershy leant in slowly to one another their lips just inches apart. But before they could kiss there was a loud knocking sound that echoed throughout the dream world, the dream Fluttershy shot up and instantly the world was thrown into darkness as the real Fluttershy awoke with a blush to the knocking on her front door, realising she had slept in.
Luna’s eyes snapped open as she gasped and panting softly after being evicted from the dream, she leant on a nearby wall wiping her brow of the sweat that had formed as she stared at the ground.
‘Why…why would she dream about something like that?’ she wondered internally.
She decided she would ask her sister to see what she made of it but remembered her sister was out for the day and wouldn’t be back until the afternoon. Luna didn’t know what she was doing their but assumed she was paying a visit to her student Twilight. She decided to head to her room and wait till Celestia arrived back.
