Pinkie Pie browsed through the shelves of Twilight Sparkle's library. She was looking for something new to try. A big party was coming up and she wanted to be prepared, so she decided to arm herself with a new recipe. She skimmed through many shelves of Twilight's library; all the cook books there were ones Pinkie had already used. Twilight was across the room studying at her desk. Pinkie called to Twilight, whom had her nose buried in a book. "Twilight!"
"Yes Pinkie?" Twilight replied, she refocused on her book immediately after.
"Do you have any more books? I've already used all of these books and need something fresh! I want to make the best cupcakes ever!"
"You have ambition Pinkie. I think there are a few more shelves of books down in the basement, but I don't normally go down there. Feel free to look and see if you can find something interesting." Twilight said, irritated to be pulled from her studies.
"Okey-dokey-lokey, I'll be back in a jiffy!" Pinkie turned to dash off, and then stopped. "Wait" she began "You have a basement?"
"Yes Pinkie, I indeed do. But like I said, I don't normally go down there." Twilight sighed
"Where is it?"
"Oh, it’s underneath that rug." Twilight finished, pointing her hoof at a rug near Pinkie's hooves. "Thanks!" Pinkie glimmered, and pushed the rug to the side with a hoof. She grabbed the handle in her mouth and pulled open the door to the basement.

The basement was a dark and musty place. Tree roots penetrated the roof of the place, and brushed at Pinkie's mane. Pinkie searched with a hoof for a light switch, but found none. She called up to Twilight "its dark down here! And there aren't any lights!" A flashlight soon fell down into the basement. Obviously Twilight was too busy to mind Pinkie. Pinkie shrugged off Twilight's rudeness and clicked on the flashlight.
The room became illuminated and Pinkie looked at the three shelves that sat on the far end of the room. In the center of the room was a table, clean and bare. Pinkie trotted past the table and to the shelves. She began hoofing through the books and found a cookbook. Delicious Tacos for All was the title. Pinkie frowned; this was not what she was looking for. She sighed and continued looking through the last shelf until she found one more cookbook called Enjoyable Sweets That Can't be Beat! Pinkie grinned. This was exactly what she was looking for! She flipped open the cover, and was struck with immediate disappointment. The book had been damaged beyond recognition. The ink had run and some of the pages just crumbled when they were touched.
Pinkie sighed again. She would have to let everypony down, and leave empty-hoofed. She turned to head back up to the surface when the table caught her eye. There was a book underneath one of the legs to steady it. Pinkie crouched down and pulled out the book, she blew dust off of the cover and grinned wider than she ever had before. A cookbook. Necronomicooking: otherworldly sweets and eats.
Pinkie darted up the stairs and ran past Twilight, on her way out she said "OkaythanksTwilight!" and continued running wildly over to her bakery. She galloped past ponies of all shapes and sizes. They were literally every color under the sun. Pinkie continued her mad dash to the bakery that was Sugarcube Corner. She ran in the door and past Mr. and Mrs. Cake. "HiMr.andMrs.Cake!" she said as she galloped past them, up the stairs, and into her room.
Pinkie tossed herself onto her bed and opened up the book. She looked at the table of contents:

Page 3..........................Glass Patina... wait what? Pinkie thought to herself. Ponies can't eat glass, can they? She ignored it "Must be a typo" and continued reading. Pinkie finished looking at what she could cook, and decided to actually look at the recipes. She opened to page one, since it was what she planned to make in the first place. She read:
Ingredients
• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 3 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 4 egg whites from large eggs
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1 cup 2% milk
• 2 large eggs
• 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 5 tablespoons of Pony Flesh
Hellish Cupcake Recipe Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cupcake pans with paper liners.
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, shortening, milk and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Mix at low speed for 2 minutes. Scrape bowl. Add egg whites and mix at high speed until fluffy and smooth, approximately 2 minutes.
Fill liners 1/2 to 2/3 full of batter. Do not overfill. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool 10 minutes in pans then remove from pan, and place on wire racks to cool completely.
Frost and decorate your vanilla cupcakes as desired.
She looked up from her reading. Pony...flesh...what? Is that some kind of spice or herb? She looked at the instructions once more. No... It meant literal Pony flesh. No.. she couldn't make evil cupcakes like these. But what about her friends? She said she was going to make the best cupcakes ever! She couldn't let her friends down. But how would she acquire such an ingredient? She would need a trap. Some way to lure ponies to their... deaths. Oh Celestia, what was she thinking! She can't kill ponies!
Pinkie curled up in her bed. Kill ponies? For food? Wha-who would do such a thing? What kind of monster would try to harm another? And eat them? She noticed she was clutching the book in her hooves. Was she that kind of pony? Could she hurt somepony else? Would it be worth it? Her friends were the most important thing in the world to her, would she kill for them? She can't ask for help on this, no, she would have to figure this out on her own. Who would she kill? Pinkie looked at the clock, it was late, and her clock was slow. Would she kill a pony? For her best friends? No, she couldn't do such a thing.
But she can't disappoint her friends. Pinkie reluctantly decided what she had to do. But she decided she'd do it tomorrow, it was late.

Pinkie awoke the next day, feeling refreshed. She found that odd, considering what she was planning. She decided to target somepony nopony would notice was missing. But who? How about... She thought for a while, there were many ponies, but very few that nopony would miss. She decided to just lure the first pony she saw.
Pinkie went downstairs and saw (ironically) Cupcake Cutie sitting in a seat, waiting to be given her order. Pinkie walked up to her. "Hiya Cupcake!"
"Oh hi Pinkie! Did you need something?"
"Actually yes! Wanna help me make cupcakes?"
"Sure!" It was almost too easy. Poor Cupcake would never see it coming. Pinkie Pie guided her into the basement of Sugarcube Corner. Cupcake went down first. Pinkie grabbed a cake knife off the counter and followed her. Cupcake flicked on the lights and asked aloud "Hey Pinkie, how are we gonna make cupcakes down here? There's nothing here to bake with."
"I said I needed you to help make cupcakes you silly filly. Not to help bake." and with that Pinkie drew out her knife and stabbed the back of Cupcake's skull, it glanced off of her bone and she cried out in pain. Pinkie got closer and slit her throat. Cupcake gurgled and slowly slumped to the ground. Blood had spilled everywhere.
What had Pinkie just done? She had done it, she killed another. She was a monster. A murderer. She considered turning herself in immediately. She needed to make these cupcakes though. Maybe they would be awful cupcakes, and nopony would like them. Yes, she could stop making them if nopony liked them. she imagined the scene in her head
"Hey Pinkie, I heard you were trying a new cupcake recipe, but man, even you couldn't make these taste good."
"Yes, they're simply horrid Pinkie, let's go eat somewhere else."
"Oh you guys are right, these cupcakes are terrible. I won't use this recipe anymore."
Pinkie Began cutting Cupcake. Just enough to make one batch, just to start with. Pinkie cut off a piece of her flank, then proceeded to look around the room. Lucky enough for her there was a sink for Pinkie to wash up in. She washed the blood from her hooves and proceeded to trot upstairs. She held the pony meat in her mouth, at first it disgusted her, but then she noted the taste... it was...sweet. She tossed the meat into a bowl and grabbed some of the other ingredients, covering up the pony flesh with flour, sugar, and vanilla. She vigorously mixed the bowl with a knife; to make sure the flesh was chopped into appropriately sized bits and to mix the ingredients. The batter smelled wonderful, like nothing she had ever made before. She poured the cupcake batter into a pan and stuck it into the oven. Letting the cupcakes warm to perfection.
When the cupcakes were done, Pinkie lifted one out of the pan. She slowly sunk her teeth into the treat. At first she felt a little queasy, but then the flavor, oh the flavor. It was absolutely amazing. But was it worth it? She decided everypony else would be the judge, later tonight at the party.

Chapter 2: Chimicherrychangas
Summer Harvest came home again from the local library. Ponyville only had one library, but it had a massive array of books. Summer had searched through the shelves, looking for something that might help her get her cutie mark. Summer Harvest was a young wheat-colored earth filly with a yellow and orange mane. She found herself disappointing time and time again by her quests to find a cutie mark, starting with her first one and leading up to now, where she looked for ideas in a library.
Summer Harvest had started with the most obvious choice, trying to find a cutie mark that matched her name, but she was no good at farming. She still appreciated the help from the young mare at the farm, Misses Smith. Summer continued her search for her cutie mark for over a year, but to no avail. Now she was running out of ideas, and was forced to search for a cutie mark at the library.
Summer Harvest's hopes had returned when she found a book, Necronomicooking, she had never tried cooking before, so she was excited to try something interesting and new. Summer Harvest had been at the library when she had spotted a book near the bottom corner of a shelf. She had picked it up and looked at the cover. Cooking was perfect for her! She always helped her mother with cooking so what better way to get a cutie mark?
Summer entered her house, and called to her parents "Mom, Dad, I'm home!"
"Hi honey, we wont hold you up, you can get right to work on that cutie mark." replied her mother.
"Okay mom, I'll be in my room." And with that Summer Harvest went upstairs into her room. She opened up to the table of contents.

Summer Harvest stopped at Chimicherrychangas. It was something she'd never heard of before, and it sounded excellent. Nopony had ever made Chimicherrychangas before, but everypony has done cupcakes. They're almost overdone. But this, this was something new! Something nopony had ever seen before, and Summer Harvest was gonna make them for the whole town!
She flipped open to page three and looked for a picture, but there was none. She instead closed up the book and ran downstairs to the kitchen. She placed the book onto the counter and opened it up again. Summer Harvest ran around, gathering up all the supplies she needed from the kitchen. As she went over the list, there was one more thing she had missed, she frowned, and then thought out loud "What's a 'Deathly Nightshade?'" Summer Harvest realized she was going to need to make another trip to the library. She closed up the book and placed it in her room. She wanted to surprise everypony, so they couldn't see what she was making.
She galloped as fast as she could to the library. Summer knocked on the door thrice, and the librarian let her in. She was such a nice pony,, but she was getting old, and many feared she would die soon. Summer Harvest greeted her with a smile. Summer ran through the shelves of books until she found one about plants. She opened it up to the glossary and searched for Deathly Nightshade. She found it, and opened up to the page. She skimmed through until she found a picture of the plant. She neglected reading the caption underneath the photo and closed the book. She placed the book back on the shelf and ran off. She had seen plants like these before, near the Everfree Forest.
Summer Harvest had darted off through the streets until she came to the edge of town. She snuck past the guard pony, who was there to keep out monsters from the Everfree Forest. Since they were the first settlers of Ponyville, the creatures didn't take too kindly to the forest just being cleared out like this.
Summer continued running as soon as she was clear of the guard. She neared the Everfree Forest and immediately spotted the purplish ivy. She grabbed onto it with her teeth and pulled it out of the ground. It came out easily, almost as though it wanted to be pulled. She ran back towards Ponyville with the plant. She once again snuck past the guard and into Ponyville. She had a bitter taste in her mouth from the plant, but even a yucky ivy wasn't going to stop Summer Harvest from getting her cutie mark. Summer had run all the way home before she ran out of breath. At the door she stopped to rest, and then went inside. She placed the plant with the other ingredients and retrieved the cookbook. She flipped open to page two once again and began cooking.

Summer Harvest finished cooking the delicious looking food and looked to her flank. Nothing. She frowned, but decided to serve her dish anyways. It still looked delicious, and would be a waste not to eat. She brought out the dish to her parents in the dining room. They began to clap, but stopped when they saw her flank was still blank. "Still no cutie mark?" asked her mother. "No, nothing"
"But this dish! It looks perfect!" exclaimed her father
"I know, but I guess it's not my special talent."
"Well I don't care, you can cook any time you want sweetie."
"Are you gonna eat it?"
"of course!" Her father and her mother took a bite out of the Chimicherrychanga. They chewed, nodding with approval. Then something odd happened, they stopped.
Summer Harvest became slightly concerned "Mom? Dad? are you okay?" she shook her father by the shoulder, but he slumped over, landing face first in the Chimicherrychangas. "What's wrong?" she whimpered, tears beginning to form "What's going on? Wh-why aren't you answering me?" at this point she began bawling her eyes out. She realized what was wrong, they were dead. They hadn't choked, no, they would have coughed or showed some indication of choking. Something was wrong with the food.
Summer Harvest ran out the door and to the library. Everything in the recipe checked out, except for the Deathly Nightshade, but what was wrong with it? She frantically knocked on the door of the library. The librarian opened the door again, smiling at Summer Harvest "You're becoming an avid reader little one." she said. Summer harvest ignored her and galloped towards where she found the book about plants. She found it and flipped it open, looking at the caption underneath the picture, she read: "Deathly Nightshade is severely toxic to ponies, usually causing death." She began to tear up again, she closed the book, and placed it back on the shelf. She then ran home once more.
She galloped past ponies, concerned with what she was crying about, but soon dismissed her when she did not answer. She opened the door to her home, grabbed the cookbook and ran out the door again. Nopony should ever use this book she thought to herself I'm gonna get rid of it, or hide it, or something to where nopony ever uses it again. Summer Harvest opened the door to the library once more. She didn't care if the librarian was closing, she needed to hide this book. Summer harvest opened the trap door in the middle of the floor, She climbed down to the basement. In the middle of the room there was a table. She carefully slid it underneath one of the legs. Nopony would ever see this accursed book again she told herself, she finished downstairs and climbed up to the surface. She closed the trap door, placing a nearby rug on top of it. She then galloped home.
When she arrived at her house she saw her reflection in the window. Her face was stained with tears, she looked absolutely torn, but then her eyes fell on her flank. Summer gasped, her cutie mark had manifested. On her flank were two pony skulls, one for each of her parents, in a puddle of poison. She was horrified. Her special talent was... poisoning ponies. She trembled, there was no way that was true... but it was there. Fresh tears began to form as she trotted inside. She approached the bodies of her parents. She gave each of them a hug, and then leaned over the table and took a bite of her horrible creation. The taste was sweet and-
Summer Harvest fell over, her muscles had given out. She slowly drooled and then felt very...tired...she tried... to keep her eyes... open... but.... she... was just so...tired... she gave in and... closed her eyes... she felt her heart... slow...until all... went...black...

"It is finished m'lord."
"Oh really? Everything I asked for?"
"Yes m'lord, Necronomicooking is complete." The evil lord grinned at the young colt writer and the colt cowered back.
"Uh, m'lord, if you don't mind me asking"
"Yes?"
"Why would you need a book like this?"
"I don't need it. It is for you."
"B-but m'lord! I cannot use something wicked and evil like this!"
"Ah, that is where you are wrong. You will use it, as I instruct you to. You are my new disciple, and that requires some killing on your part."
The colt then bowed to his master "Yes m'lord." and he left, entering the other room where he was being held captive. The dark lord picked up the book placed in front of him. Necronomicooking. He touched it with the tip of his horn and cackled maniacally. The book was now invulnerable, and could withstand the test of time.
The colt in the other room was an innocent fellow, he just happened to pass a little to close to the dark one's lair. He was a light grey stallion with a silver and red mane. The stallion was perfect for the dark lord, and he already looked the part. The dark lord had tortured him, then finally, removed his cutie mark and replaced it with his own, two skulls in a pool of acid, a symbol of service to the dark lord. The poor guy never knew what he was getting himself into until it was too late. Now that he was bound to the dark lord, he was his eternal servant.
The dark lord himself was one of the few remaining alicorns. He was also one of the last in this land. Some of his family had flown west, including his sisters Celestia and Luna. Now he was one of the only left. Many of his family did not complete the journey west, and died at the hand of horrible creatures. As far as he knew, there were only the three of them. Celestia and Luna in the west, and then himself in the east. But who was he? The dark lord had been imprisoned in stone, for reasons he couldn't remember. He remembered his family, and he remembered his purpose, to torture ponykind. He couldn't remember his name, which bothered him. He always just thought of himself as "the dark lord" but surely he had a name.
The dark lord sighed, his lament was one that nopony could help with. He was just an evil, compassionless (and apparently nameless) beast. He decided his followers would think of a name for him. He called in his disciple. "Disciple! Come to me!" the door flew open in rapid response to his summons.
"Yes m'lord?"
"I realize I have not learned your name."
"Yes m'lord, my name is Moonlit Wonder."
"Now tell me something else: do you know my name?"
"Your name m'lord? I don't believe you've ever told me."
"I was afraid of that. Nothing in your legends or history books tells of a great and powerful alicorn? One of fearsome might? One whose coat and mane are colored with the blood of ponies? One whom could rule them all, but was turned to stone? And while we are on that topic, who turned me to stone?"
"I'm sorry m'lord, but I do believe you have been imprisoned for a long time, longer than our records show."
"Then name me. Name your benevolent ruler. Whom shall you praise when you spill the blood of thine enemies, my cleric?"
"I suppose if I were to name you... I think you would be called...Cruciamentum."
"Cruciamentum?The old pony word Cruciamentum- meaning to torture or torment?"
"The same."
"Perfect. But now I think you need a new name. Yours is too happy, I will name you, in thanks for you naming me."
"Thank you m'lord, what shall I be called?"
"Since I also am fond of old ponyish, I shall use it to name you as well. Let me think... how about... Morsus, the old pony word for pain."
"Thank you m'lord. Do you need anything else?"
"No, you may rest. I need to plan." He waved away Morsus and continued to sit upon his throne. He hadn't been outside in a while, since well, he had been turned to stone. He wondered how his mountainside castle looked now. Cruciamentum trotted over to the balcony near his throne. As far as he could tell, the castle had been in a deteriorating state from the inside, how did it look on the outside? From the balcony, Cruciamentum could see most of the castle, it was missing. The throne room had apparently been all that remained. The rest of the castle lay below. He would have to enslave more ponies than he expected. One of the first things he now planned to do when he conquered the west was fix his castle.
Speaking of things he planned to do, Cruciamentum re-entered the throne room and opened the book. The pages were filled with recipes designed to torture a pony's mind or body, whether it be the cook or the victim. Cruciamentum eyed his favorite recipe, the Glass Patina. Yes it was the perfect weapon for torture, by cooking a regular patina, filled with glass shards. It was funny how a patina was made, because no matter what you put in it, it always looked the same. Cruciamentum closed the book and entered another room, his bedroom.
The sun had fallen, and Cruciamentum had planned to wait all night until his precious book was complete, but his disciple surprised him and finished early. Now that it was complete, Cruciamentum needed sleep. He lay down on his bed, the foal's down it had been filled with had not deteriorated in the slightest, and he was comfortable. He looked around the room. The carpets were still red, as in the other rooms of his castle, and the stone walls still sported the magically lit sconces of old. He smiled as he thought of how little his world had changed, but then frowned as he thought about how much everything else had.

Morsus had arisen early as expected and had fetched breakfast for his master. Cruciamentum usually treated his disciples kindly, but when called for, they were treated harsher than anypony else. This manely happened when they failed, but also whenever they argued with one another, or they sympathized with his slaves, or they claimed to be his favorite. Cruciamentum gestured for Morsus to have a seat at the dining table in the throne room. Morsus obliged and asked Cruciamentum "What have you planned m'lord?"
"First I will have some questions of you, my cleric. What is the current state of the pony population?"
"Why the ponies are completely segregated m'lord. earth ponies toil in the fields, and the pegasi take whatever food they need in exchange for the weather, then the unicorns, they take whatever food they need, in exchange for bringing forth day and night."
"So there is no trust between the tribes then, is there?"
"Exactly, they all hate each other."
"And who are their leaders?"
"Well for the earth ponies, there is Chancellor Puddinghead, for the pegasi, there is Commander Hurricane, and for the unicorns, there is Princess Platinum."
"So I need to think of a way to start a war, and what better way than to assassinate their leaders?"
"There is a problem with that thought m'lord."
"What is it?"
"Very recent news, m'lord, they made up."
"What do you mean 'made up'?"
"They settled their differences, they even grouped together and founded a colony in the western lands."
"And this is recent, correct?"
"Within the past four days m'lord."
"Then there is still a chance to re-instill resentment in them."
"How would we do it m'lord?"
"Easy, as I said before we assassinate their leaders."
"With what m'lord?"
"A delicious treat."
"I beg your pardon m'lord, but did you say 'a treat'?"
"I did. The Glass Patina. It is perfect. First, we will serve it to the unicorn princess along with a note reading 'courtesy of the pegasi', next, we will serve it to the earth pony chancellor with a note reading 'courtesy of the unicorns', and finally, we will serve one to the leader of the pegasi with a note reading 'courtesy of the earth ponies', they will all declare war on one another, accusing each other of killing their leaders."
"That is a brilliant plan m'lord."
"Well then get to work, all three of the dishes must be delivered on the same day, so the other two remaining leaders do not get suspicious when another leader dies."
"Yes m'lord"
And with that Morsus had left the company of his lord, and set off to cook the dread dish. He grabbed the cookbook and exited the room, entering his own. The lord had been kind enough to allow him the large library that was here. Morsus placed the book on a stand and began searching for ingredients. Oddly enough, the pantry was in the library. The patina required mainly grains and such, so not many of the ingredients required had perished. The only remaining ingredient needed was glass. Morsus approached a window in the library and bucked through the glass. Being a unicorn, he did not need to worry about how he was going to gather the glass, so he picked up the shards with his magic and placed them in the bowl. All the other ingredients were mixed in with the glass and soon the mixture was complete. Morsus began to focus his magic on the glass mixture, he lifted it out of the bowl and shaped it into three square patinas. He focused harder on the patinas and began a heating spell, cooking them to perfection. He reached out for his saddlebags, grabbing them and stuffing in the three patinas. Morsus placed the saddlebags on his haunches and re-entered the throne room.
"I am ready m'lord, I will leave and deliver the patinas."
"Very good then, be on your way."
"Yes m'lord"
Morsus focused his magic on himself, and then on the location of the unicorn kingdom, he prepared a teleport spell and was gone.

Morsus arrived in the unicorn kingdom, he looked to a nearby waste bin and emptied the patinas into it. He was not planning to help this monster, no, not the monster who wanted war throughout the land. Instead, he decided he needed to see a weapon smith. Morsus entered the town outside of the castle and headed in the direction of smoke and the sound of hammers on metal.
Morsus trotted through the town, occasionally checking to see that his new cutie mark was still covered by his saddlebags. Surely if anypony were to see such a mark, he would be skinned alive. Morsus arrived at the blacksmith's in a short time. He approached the blacksmith. "I need the best sword you can make."
"That'll cost ya"
"How much?"
"About 300 bits"
"Here, have it done by this afternoon"
"You got it"
Morsus trotted away from the blacksmith, trying to think of ways to waste a whole day.

Morsus approached the blacksmith later in the day, the sword was complete. The blacksmith handed it to him without a word. Morsus strapped the sword to his back, then prepared an invisibility spell for it. He took a moment to concentrate on the sword, wrapping it with his magic, forming the proper components for the spell and finally concealing it. He was ready now, to end that monster. Morsus began another teleportation spell, his magic almost exhausted now, but he managed to form the spell and cast it.

Morsus had returned to the lair of Cruciamentum. He slowly approached his master on his throne. "Is it done Morsus?"
"Yes m'lord." he said, drawing to a few hooves away.
"Is something troubling you?"
"You could say that m'lord." Morsus was now within reaching distance. Morsus turned his head and grabbed the sword from its sheath, revealing it to his master. "What are you-"
Morsus struck true almost severing his master's head, blood spattering everywhere. Morsus dropped the sword on the floor, he grinned to himself. Morsus, you've saved Equestria he thought. He began to walk to his room to rest and restore his magic when his body started to convulse. Morsus failed to even reach the door before dropping to the floor. His eyes began to water from excruciating pain. What's happening? Morsus thought, he didn't realize he would get a response. You tried to kill me Morsus. You tried to play hero. Now you will suffer the consequences. Morsus continued to convulse, soon he began to cough up blood, up into the point of vomiting it all over the floor. Morsus soon passed out, unconscious. Then he was dead.
Morsus's body was soon possessed by Cruciamentum. He took the body and felt around inside of it, becoming accustomed to Morsus. Soon he was in full control. Cruciamentum took the book and teleported it to a random place, where anypony could find it and use it. Cruciamentum knew this body would not last long, since he was really dead. There was no preventing death, just prolonging it. Cruciamentum hobbled to his room and lay down upon his bed. He welcomed the relief it brought. The book, he knew, would live on, causing torment in his honor. Cruciamentum closed his eyes, and let death come to him.

Many years and hundreds of uses of the book later
A mare took hold of the book, giving it to some stranger, getting onto a covered wagon bound for Ponyville. She begged to the stranger "Please, please hide this book. Nopony should ever read this." The little old mare just smiled and nodded. The other mare felt comforted by this, almost like it would never be used again.
She was dead wrong
