Prologue
“Two weeks. It’s been two weeks since our boys in power armor kicked those Enclave bastards out of Project Purity, and started that baby chugging!”
The wasteland DJ known only as Three-Dog sat back in his chair as the automated message ran. The echoes of armored footsteps met his ears as dozens of Brotherhood of Steel Paladins shuffled around the ruined radio station, double checking defenses and monitoring vital systems. Three-Dog grinned silently to himself as he slid his chair across the room to a wall of assorted electronics. The Galaxy News Radio station was among one of the safest places left in the Capital Wasteland, and with it being situated within the super mutant infested DC area, that was quite a feat.
The DJ flipped a couple switches on the various systems in front of him and the radio transitioned from news reports to music. He had no noteworthy wasteland issues to report so he simply let the latest recorded reports run indefinitely, along with the usual music, as well as some new tracks that he had found rummaging around in the basement of the radio station.
He nudged the satchel filled with vinyl records with his foot, “Heh, who woulda' guessed huh? I thought I had cleared out that old trove years ago.” He wheeled his chair over to the window overlooking DC, “Guess it's just as well though, those tunes get old after a while, and there's only so many records the Brotherhood can find on their way...” He sighed as he watched the Paladins walk to and fro on their patrols, “that, and they're all tone deaf bastards, HA! They couldn't care less about the music, much less some weird, dusty old disk laying on the ground.”
His gaze shifted over to the rest of the city. What was left of it anyway. “Nobody seems to give a molerat's ass about music anymore, after that Agatha gal passed away, rest her soul...” He frowned, a rare occurrence, “They all just want want the news, though, I guess I can't fault them for that.” His grin returned, “After that crazy kid came a' waltzing outta that vault, things have been finally looking up in our little slice a' hell.”
The Lone Wanderer, as he had come to be known, had emerged from vault 101 not too long ago, a little less than a year ago even. Since then he had become somewhat of a legend in the wasteland, from giving fresh water to the people, to shooting his way out of a heavily armed military base. He even helped the DJ get his radio station back into working condition, and routinely visited him. Whether it was sheer dumb luck or he somehow gained the favor of the gods themselves was anyone’s guess. He was a beacon of hope in this dead world they called home. Even now he was moving with the Brotherhood of Steel to take down the Enclave's last stronghold, which apparently held some kind of super weapon, if the rumors going around the station where true. Three-Dog didn't know much about the Enclave past their asinine radio broadcasts, which had since stopped since the Lone Wanderer tricked President Eden (who turned out to be a robot AI) into killing himself, but he knew that anything they did was bad news to the wasteland.
Three-Dog sighed and once again turned his gaze out the window, “Kid, wherever you are now, whatever your doing at that Enclave base, you had better do it quick. Oh, and 'good luck' not that YOU ever need it, ha ha ha...” Three-Dog continued to gaze out the window, he really hoped that the Wanderer was safe wherever he was; he was one of the few people in the Capitol Wasteland he would call friend. He always came to visit him for a nice talk, or whenever he found any new records for him to play.
Suddenly something appeared to cut through the clouds and fall towards the earth. It was bright, so bright it rivaled the sun itself. Three-Dog had to squint and shield his eyes to keep track of it. It was large, whatever it was, about the size of a full grown deathclaw. It was descending quickly and... and it was headed straight for his studio!
“Oh... OH HOLY SHI-” was the last thing that echoed through the station before the bomb hit. All around the wasteland, explosions tore the earth asunder before falling deathly silent.
Princess Celestia woke with a startled yelp, her royal bedsheets falling off of her in a tangled mess. It had been eons since she had a nightmare, even more one so vivid; she could see every detail, every second passing with perfect clarity. She gasped as an azure light flashed through her room and Princess Luna quickly approached her, “ Sister! We heard you scream! What happened? Was there an assassin, an attempt on your life? Has Discord returned again? Are the Changelings-”
Celestia cut her off, “No, no sister, i-it was just a nightmare.”
Luna cocked an eyebrow, “A nightmare, sister? We did not know you got nightmares anymore.”
“I, sister, not we,” Luna gave her an awkward grin, she was still learning modern speech, “and no, I usually don't anymore...”
Luna pulled herself onto the bed next to her sister, “Would you like to talk about it? Often times dreams have deeper meaning to them. What was it about?”
“I'm not sure,” Celestia lowered her head.
“You don't remember?”
“No,” Celestia turned to look at her sister, “ I remember very clearly, I'm just not sure what it was about.” Her eyes shut as she recalled the dream,”I remember a land very unlike Equestria; it was a dead world, I couldn't see any plant life, and the sky was shrouded in black.” She shivered a little, “And it was burning. The whole world was being torn apart by explosions, and these... creatures that stood on two legs were running, trying to escape...”
She turned to her sister again, “None of them did, I tried to help, I really did, but...” she closed her eyes as tears began to make their way down her face, ”t-they looked like they where in so much pain...”
Luna wrapped her fore hooves around her sister, “Shhhh, Tia, it's alright, it was just a dream.”
“What do you think it means, Luna?”
“I'm not sure, Tia, I’m not sure.”
Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from god, to justice, to simple psychotic rage.
In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive force of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation.
To ponies, this scenario is ludicrous, impossible even. They have enjoyed many centuries of peace and harmony, save for small incidents, resolved quickly. They are perhaps the polar opposite of man, resolving their conflicts with love and friendship, rather than fire and death.
What would happen if these two races where to be forced together? One thing is for certain, is that war..
War never changes.
