The Aurora Boreallis

The air gradually became colder, but I couldn't see anything. It was all dark. Complete darkness. I didn't even know where that pony even was. All I felt was my body being floated in mid-air. I felt like I was turning my head. I could even feel my arms and forelegs, but I couldn't see them. This was true darkness. It was starting to strain my eyes a little bit. I could hear the wind rushing past me, assuming that we were flying. She was probably taking me somewhere up North, because it usually isn't cold on these early summer nights.

Then my mind slowly started processing things together.

Twili-....I mean, Midinght Sky, had apparently possessed all of the features King Sombra would have. Could she had been permanently possessed by him...? No. Can't be. Darkness and dark magic are its own substance. I would call it dark matter, but that has nothing to do with magic. Midnight Sky had to be with Twilight back then for a while if she knew who Twilight was in the first place.

I'm getting off topic. My main question was, where was she taking me....?

The air was getting ever so colder, I felt myself huddle in a fetal position to keep warm.

Let's say she was Sombra........

Yes. I knew where she was taking me.

Back to The Frozen North.

It was only minutes after I had stupidly figured that out, that I felt gravity take a hold of my body and placed me in knee-high snow. The darkness then disappeared around me. I immediately fell to the ground. I lifted my head up and looked around me. The entire atmosphere was dark gray. Half of it was barely visible due to the blinding snow drifts that blurred my vision. I was used to this weather, but this was far from where my part of The Frozen North was. This was a whole another section of tundra that I haven't discovered yet.

An armored hoof reached out to me.

"Sorry about the landing." , Midnight Sky spoke to me.

"It's fine..." , I said, grabbing her hoof.

She pulled me up and I stood on all fours.

She motioned to her right, "This way, it's right around the corner. Plus, I'm sure you would want to get out of the cold." .

I raised an eyebrow to her, "Uh.....pardon me for being terse with you, but I'm the reason it's blizzarding like this to begin with......" .

She quickly turned back with those green eyes, "You?!!!?!? You're the one whose frozen my empire like a rock for the past 50 years??!?!?!" .

She blew puffs of smoke from her muzzle. Her expression of anger sent me to alarm. Fearing that she might cause harm to me, I sprouted my massive black tentacles from my back, and backed away slowly from her. Midnight's eyes went wide and almost in direct response, she backed away from me, staring straight up at my tentacles.

"S-Sorry........I didn't mean to insult you....." , she spoke more quieter.

What? First of all, she wasn't fearing death back in Coltafornia, now when we get here, she turns as white as the snow?

I responded, "No. I wasn't insulted, I was fearing for my life because I thought you were going to attack me." .

She looked surprised at me, "No no no no!!! I would never try to do harm to you Aurora. You're the prime descendant of the Aurora Family. It would be a sin to harm such a rarity." .

"....Rarity.......?" , I quietly spoke out.

She was starting to blush. I, for one, was not paying attention to her emotions.

I was on that last word she said.

Rarity......

The Elements of Harmony.....

I felt something cold and metal rest on my shoulder. I looked up. Midnight was looking at me with a sad expression.

She calmly spoke to me, "You must learn to let go of the past.......they only wanted to be your friends because they were afraid you might hurt them if they didn't....." .

I gazed into her green eyes and argued, "But I told them that I wouldn't hurt them! Why would they continue to be afraid of me!!??!!" .

I sat on my haunches. The snow depth reached my torso. My body heat melted a circle around me. I was sitting on a patch of dead grass. I felt Midnight Sky's body press closer to mine. Instantly, I turned around and found her arms around mine. She was shivering in her armor and cape.

I figured that she was getting cold.

"Maybe we should get to your castle...." , I said in certain.

She realized this and quickly detached herself from me and stood up tall, trying her best to regain her formality, even though I was aware of her actions.

"Uh....Yes!!! We must make haste. The temperature is dropping fast." .

She began to trot on. I grabbed her tail with my teeth. She yelped and jumped for a second, then turned around.

"You dare bite the tail of The Queen?!?!" , she hissed.

Me, no longer scared of her threats, put a hoof up in the air, "Pardon me, but I can fix this weather..." .

I could've have sworn I saw gleaming white sparkles within her red pupils.

"You will??!!! For me-....uh...for the empire?" , she beamingly asked.

"Let me see what type of storm system you have going on, but let's get inside first.

She walked in front me, "Yes. Let us go now." .

It only took us about 15 minutes to round the corner of a small mountain. There were rows of lit up torches that marked a path.

My mind wanted to see what was ahead of us. The pathway of torches led up to something big. The blowing snow around us began to die down. The howling winds began to recede. The horizon was starting to become more clearer up ahead. My mind was controlling my powers. I was aware of it, but I was praying to God that it wouldn't go berserk and cause more destruction. So I allowed it to do whatever was necessary.

There was still a black tint of stratus clouds in the sky, but there was so much white snow on the ground, it practically represented a source of light as we made our through.

The wind speed had literally dropped to 0. There were no snowflakes in the air. In fact, the air temperature raised itself from -2 below zero, to whopping 38 degrees above zero.

Why was my body doing so much? I wasn't concerned because this wasn't the darkness inside me controlling my power, this was just my mind acting on an instinct. Did I want to make her feel comfortable? But she's the Queen of.....uh...Darkness!! She's probably lived here for a hundred years!! I know most ponies would freeze solid in this weather, but she took it on like it was nothing. If I would've known someone was living here in my domain as well, I've could've at least delayed a couple Low Pressure systems every once in a while.

We finally walked over the last hill. What was before me, was unbelievable.

It was The Crystal Empire.....no.....a replica of it. It looked exactly like the Crystal empire King Sombra ruled a couple thousand years ago. But Daymare & Luna......I saw them get rid of the entire empire. How did it just....appear back into existence?!!??

"We're here. I hope you like it." , Midnight spoke to me as she walked down the slope.

"Like it? It's....it's.....amazing......but where did it come from? I thought Daymare Sun had gotten rid of it?" .

Midnight stopped in her tracks.

I think I might had touched a nerve.

She responded without turning her head back, "Let's not worry about that. I present you, Aurora, the long lasting, Crystal Empire." .

She waved her hoof over the scenery. It was exactly as I had seen it years ago. The massive crystal tower at the center of the empire must be where she lives. There were little crystal houses around the centerpiece. The roads ran diagonal from each other, intercepting at various, five star formation angles.

"Come, I will show you the main quarters." , Midnight motioned forward.

This was.....home. Particularly not here, but in this climate, landform. This was where I spent most of my years. How come I never flew across this place before. Which brought me back to the question of when this empire just appeared again, but after feeling the strange aura when I last asked her, I thought it was best not to ask her again.

We walked on one of the roads that lead to the main building. It almost looked like the Eiffel Tower in Prance, but it was entirely made of crystal. We walked to the main entrance. Two guards were posted there. They immediately bowed and stepped aside to allow their Queen to enter. We walked through the main hallway.....which was f*cking huge as Tartarus. No kidding. This pony had a grand hallway that would fit even the biggest of cumulonimbus clouds. The only occupation that I noticed here were just guards & servants. No citizens whatsoever.

"King Sombra had trusted me with the responsibility that this empire is to be maintained properly, and grow in size, strength, and power." , Midnight said as she walked beside me.

I turned my head to her, "Was he ignorant on the fact that I live in The Frozen North as well?".

"He believed that you were on his side." , she responded.

"But he's never talked to me or anything." , I protested.

"He prayed to you almost everytime he needed to......for health, for power.....for my safety...." , she responded.

No no no no.....this can't be happening. He...prayed to me? I am not a God! How many times, do I have to say it?!!?! I don't want to be looked upon as a deity!!! I don't like it!!! No! I hate it!!! With a passion!!! Why does everypony have to take one good look at me and-.....

My thoughts stopped as we entered the next hallway. The hall was mostly filled with servants. As soon as they saw us, they immediately dropped their things and bowed before us. Midnight Sky held her head up high as she strode through. I, on the other hand, shrunk my head down to avoid the attention. I heard multiple whispers come from them.

All I could hear was,

"......the new king has arrived........rejoice......rejoice........rejoice......." .

......

New....king.....?

Midnight called my name, "This way Aurora." .

My eyes shot open. I had fallen behind of Midnight, "Oh...yes....coming....." .

The servants that I passed, did not even bow. Instead, they just stood there, in complete shock.

I knew what they were looking at.

My eyes.

I followed Midnight up through a couple staircases, and came across a large door with a familiar cutie mark imprinted on it. Two guards were posted on either side of the door.

Midnight waved a hoof to them, "You may leave now." .

The two guards bowed their heads, "Yes, my Queen." .

They both teleported out of sight.

Midnight used her magic, encasing the doors in a purple aura, just like Twilight's. The massive doors opened to reveal a large room, almost exactly like Daymare Sun's. A large telescope was posted near an open window, there were shelves and shelves of books, and there was large mirror on her dresser. All of the "Furniture" , was completely made out of crystal. Although the contents were real. There were pillows, matressess, and other household items, but the structure of the furniture was completely made out of crystal.

She closed the doors behind her with her magic and walked to an open balcony to my left. She began to talk.

"I took on the job of ruling this empire because I knew I was ready. Sombra saw that in me. He taught me everything he knew about this empire, its flaws, its secrets, everything. I looked up to him. He wasn't as cruel as you think believe it or not. He just wanted to be understood. He took me in as if.......as if I was his own daughter...." .

Holy........I couldn't even begin to process the questions in my head. But one spurted out.

"Wait......how did he find you....?" , I asked.

She turned around. The torch that was lit outside the balcony, gave a shadow over her face and body, that would even make Nightmare Moon run away in fear. I could see it all. She gave me a serious look, her red horn showing through her mane, just right behind her crystal crown. Her green eyes were the only thing that was bright beyond the shadow that covered her.

She spoke to me.

"He didn't find me, I found him. Many years ago..........I ran away from Ponyville. I didn't want the attention of being a part of the Royal Family. As a filly, I wasn't into books unlike my twin sister. Her on the other hand, knew how to turn a page with her magic before I could how to use it. Then my parents enrolled her into The School For Gifted Unicorns. I couldn't believe it. I was furious. I was always treated as a cast away, so my twin sister could wallow in my parents love. When Twilight caused that destruction during her Entrance Exam, I hoped that she was going to blow it. Maybe that would teach her a lesson about outcasting me. But no.....instead, no only did she get her cutie mark before me, but she also was the personal student of Princess Celestia!!!! It was my dream to be taught by her!!!! So what I didn't learn as fast as she did!!! MAYBE SHE COULD'VE INFLUENCED ME!!!!!!" .

Midnight's voice reverberated through the crystal walls. She shrank back as I uncovered my ears from my hooves.

"I'm terribly sorry my dear. I'm sorry......" , she sighed.

"It's fine Twilig-..I mean, Midnight...." , I responded.

I'm screwed.......

Midnight raised an ear. I quickly thought of a way out of that to not piss her off any further.

"Please....go on....." , I said.

Both of her ears drooped as she turned her head back to the black tinted sky.

"I was so angry with my sister, my parents, myself. Since Twilight had shattered my parents expectations, there was no way I would keep up with her. She was given more love and care than me. I asked them why they were doing this, and they smiled and said, "Don't worry about her. You are maturing, sweetie. You'll get to do things that Twilight wouldn't do until she reached a certain age." But I knew it was a lie. They just wanted to hide the fact that they were over caring for Twilight!!! So on Heart's Warming Eve, I wrote my parents a long, unregretful letter of how I've been outcasted and no longer deserve their love. I took whatever would keep me alive, and left Canterlot. 6 days of wandering around the mountains. I was truly lost. In reality, and in my own thoughts. I knew not to head to the Everfree Forest, or I would've been dead within the night I left. It felt colder as I continued walking, so I knew I was heading somewhere up North. Maybe somewhere North of Manehattan. But I ran into a snow storm, and all of my supplies were used. All I had was a red blanket that I grabbed from my bed. It was so cold........like you wouldn't believe. If I tried to cry, my tears would freeze in the process...." .

There it was......

A snow storm.....

"Excuse me.....but what year did you run away.....?" , I asked cautiously.

"It was 6 days after Heart's Warming Eve, 1942." .

It was confirmed.

I clearly remembered that snow storm. It was right around 4:00pm. I summoned a winter storm from Vanhoover and sent it across the nation, to give some cities some snowfall that they lacked during the holidays. The entire storm system arrived at New York within a span of 5 days after Heart's Warming Day.

That was the day, she said she ran into the storm.

I heard sniffling.

No......please........I'm so sorry.........I didn't know......

"I felt like I was going to die. My hooves were frozen...... I couldn't move.....I was......so......so.....tired...." , she spoke, almost quietly sobbing.

I heard a clank of metal. I lifted my head up. Midnight was on her haunches, hooves over her eyes. I heard small cries from across the silent room. I ran, no, apparated in front of her and by mentally throwing all formalities out the window, I grabbed her and held her in my arms tightly. She gave way and cried into my right shoulder.

"I-.....I began to think about my parents...an-..and how they never loved me.....how they always loved Twilight......how they always ignored me, never bought me anything special, never helped me with my studies of magic......I thought my existence.......was no longer needed....that one of us was to out shine the other.....I-.....I....had lost all meaning of life.......I-.....I-......I was useless....." .

She sobbed loudly into my shoulder. I felt her cries. In fact, tears were rolling down my cheeks as well. I looked upon the black sky.

She was troubled, to a point where I thought I couldn't do anything about it. A queen, highest in her power, even more powerful than a Princess, was betrayed by her own parents. That is deep. I wouldn't be able to think if my parents had betrayed me. I would've have lost my sanity 3,000 years earlier.

My mouth began to tremble as I started crying as well. I clenched my teeth as I held her tightly.

"....it wasn't your fault.......it wasn't your fault.......it wasn't your fault...." , was all I could say to her.
