The Aurora Boreallis
200 mph
Previous ChapterNext ChapterI looked out the window as nightfall approached. I could see the last rays of Celestia's sun fade away into the coming night sky. I yawned and gently shook Pinkie, who was still asleep at that moment. She slowly moved her head and opened her eyes to look at me.
"....mmm....?" , she mumbled.
I motioned to her, "It's time to go Pinkie."
She stumbled across my lap and slowly stood up on all fours. I did the same. Twilight was upstairs in her room, doing some more reading and what not. The others went home a couple hours ago. I walked to the front of the stairs. I didn't want to interrupt her studying, so instead I shouted to her.
"Me and Pinkie are gone!" .
I got a response.
Twilight yelled back, "Ok! Have fun!" .
I then turned to Pinkie who was waiting at the doorway. She looked so cute, with those half-sleepy eyes and her beautifully straight mane and tail. I smiled and walked with her, leaving out of Twilight's house. I could smell the fresh night air as we stepped outside. It felt a bit warmer and muggier than usual. That's probably a sign that the Low pressure system I created in British Columbia near Vanhoover was approaching this way. A usual storm if you might call it.
Pinkie looked at me with slight concern.
"Aurora, the Supericeway is like 80 miles from here. How do you plan getting us th-.......ohhhhhhh.".
She interjected that last exclamation as I opened up my wings, motioning to her that we're going to fly there, arriving at half the time. She immediately beamed.
"Ooh! Ooh! I love piggy back rides!" .
I chuckled at her.
"Except this piggy has wings of a beast. Climb on, and hold on tight." .
She gave a cool smirk at me while I kneeled down so she could climb on my back.
"I can handle holding you all day......" .
I smiled and rolled my eyes as she positioned herself. She wrapped her arms around my chest and wrapped her forelegs around my mid-section. I checked with her.
"You afraid of heights?" .
She reassured to me, "Nope! Not at all! I use Ponyville's hot air balloon almost every chance I get!"
I nodded my head, "Alright. Hold on, this may be fast." .
I bent down and pushed down my wings, taking off into the night sky. I could feel the rush of the wind as I climbed to an appropriate height of about 400 feet and began to bank to my Northeast. I feel the sudden grip on my body as I assumed Pinkie was holding on for dear life. I smiled to myself and curved upwards, upside down, and around in a large circle. Pinkie was laughing with delight.
"Weeeee!!!!!" , she exclaimed loudly in my ears.
I began to fly forward as I decreased my speed. I slowed the flapping of my wings as I relaxed while flying straight. We flew right under Cantelot as we passed around the waterfalls that fell from the bottom of the capitol city. I then banked slightly to the right as we circled around the mountain and began passing over a valley of more smaller mountains. I could see train tracks that would snake their way into the tunnels inside the vast areas of rock. Then, a certain question popped into my head that I have been meaning to ask for a while. Flying across the mountain tops, I asked Pinkie.
"When did you come Ponyville, and have you always been this giddy?" . She seemed to gather up her thoughts as she responded.
"Well.....not really....." .
I was interested.
"Really? Tell me." .
She began to tell me about her history.
"Well about 7 years ago, I used to live on a rock farm just off of Macintosh Valley. Over there, there was no such thing as color, well, except for me. My real name is Pinkamena Diane Pie. Basically I was born there with two of my other sisters, Inkie and Blinkie Pie. The family business made a living breaking rocks apart and shipping them off to manufacturing factories and such. Everything was dark and gray and gloomy. We would only see the sun about three times a year......which reminds me..." .
She lightly knocked my head.
I playfully whined at her.
"Owwww. What was that for?" , I looked back at her.
"What's with the sun not showing up on the rock farm huh?" , she protested.
I began to school her on my layouts of the climate around Equestria.
"Well Macintosh Valley is on a higher elevation, which is also near Luna Bay, right?" .
She nodded.
"So the winds over are constantly moving into the valley from the bay during the daytime. That wind carries rising evaporting moisture from the bay and drives it up the higher elevation, which is Macintosh Valley. As that air and moisture rises up the valley, it expands, cools, and condenses into clouds. Being that the winds move nonstop over that valley, the clouds must probably cover half the entire valley, blocking any source of sunlight."
She responded, "Ohhh.....then why was it sunny on that one day when I saw a rainbow ring?"
My ears perked up, "Rainbow ring? You mean the visible spectrum barrier?"
She continued talking about her history,
"Yeah.....something like that. Anyway, it was one day that I was moving some rocks and all of a sudden, I head a loud crash and looked up to the sky. The clouds blew away as I saw this rainbow ring thing shoot out from nowhere. The wind was so strong, it blew my mane and tail into a poof. Then I saw like the most beautiful rainbow in my life. For the first time, it made me smile." .
My mind connected the rainbow ring she mentioned earlier to the only mare in Equestria who could break the full visible spectrum.
Rainbow Dash.
"You realize Rainbow Dash was the one who did that." .
Pinkie looked at me as if I was stupid,
"Well of course silly! Me and my friends found that out 6 months ago!" .
I shrugged and gave a sheepish smile. "Hm. Who knew." .
Pinkie continued,
"Then I wanted to do something special for my family to make them smile and feel what I felt when I saw that rainbow. That night, I spent all day in a mill house that we didn't use, getting things ready for the surprise party. I knew almost nothing about parties, but based on what I saw at a few state fairs I couldn't go to, I had a general idea of the basic layout. I told my family they could come in after I got the final preparations set. They walked in and I turned the lights on, surprising them. They stood there, motionless. But then I saw their mouth move and wriggle on their own. And before I knew it, they all smiled! For the first time in like forever! They smiled! We started dancing around like fillies all night. And then something appeared on my flank. It was my cutie mark! From that point on, I knew my destiny was to become the best party pony in all of Equestria, making everpony smile and laugh as much as I can." .
She smiled and she rested her head on the back of my neck while I was still flying.
"......She's come a long way in her life so far.......and here I am.......thinking I had the worst because people feared me......." , I thought to myself.
I spoke to her.
"You've come a long way Pinkie. You're parents would be so proud of you right now. I may just have met you a few days ago, but based on what type of mood Ponyville is on a regular basis, you have brought them happiness and joy in every possible way you can, always putting a smile on their face. You really are, the element of laughter." .
She lifted her head, "That's actually who I am. I'm one the elements of harmony." .
My ears perked up again, "You're.....one the bearer of the elements...?" .
She nodded her head.
My eyes widened as I mentally shivered.
I've been around Equestrian history as it was written, as far as I see it, The Elements of Harmony are one of the most brutal forces of magic you could use on anyone. In the year 1745, when The South Griffon Kingdom tried to take over the badlands in southern Equestria, Princess Celestia herself wielded the elements and sent a rainbow so powerful, it literally sliced the entire kingdom in half. I could recall the memory as I watched from a couple clouds above. The rainbow Celestia struck created a huge crack right through the middle of the kingdom and split it open. I watched as buildings and towers fell as the earth seemed to give way from under the establishment. In one quick minute, the entire section of land, all 3,000 square miles of the kingdom, literally sank into a massive deep hole. While hiding in invisibility, I looked up at Celestia. She was wearing golden armor like she was made to go to war. Her mane and tale was literally flaming. And probably the most intimidating feature of her was those eyes. Those black slits in her magenta eyes were enough to give me nightmares for a couple days. This is probably one of the main reasons why I was in hiding for 3,000 years. I do not want to get on her bad side. I mean, how could she possibly fear me when she can wield the elements of harmony!?! I can't even do that sh*t!!
I squinted my eyes as I saw a familiar steel infrastructure in the shape of a huge white dome.
We have arrived at our destination.
I informed her, "We're just about there." .
She lifted her head and scanned the horizon.
"Yeah I see it too! I can't wait to go skating again! I haven't skated since the last winter wrap up!" .
I stopped flapping my wings as we slowly decreased in altitude. We circled around the stadium. For a huge establishment that's hidden in the mountains, it really does pull in the customers. I saw ponies scattered almost all around the outside of the stadium, shopping at the stores on the sides of the parking lot. Most of the ponies were making their way at the entrance. I banked left and we dove towards the parking lot.
As we flew close to the payment, I slowed my flying to about walking speed. We received large gasps and cheers from the ponies we were flying over as we made our way towards the entrance. I stretched my limbs out as I came to landing. Pinkie Pie kissed my cheek and hopped off my back. Immediately ponies began to crowd around us in a circle, but stood a good distance to give us room to walk as I still held the title for being a supreme individual for formal matters. The media ponies were furiously snapping pictures and taking videos of our sudden appearance.
".....I'm probably gonna make the world news at this point.....oh well...." , I thought to myself as we walked inside the arena.
We both walked into the main hallway where the renting booths were to rent the skates. Everypony who was there stopped what they were doing and cheered as we walked past them. Moreover, I believe they're probably cheering because I'm walking with another pony beside me. They all were shouting my name, taking pictures and anything else to capture the moment. This feeling was fine to me. In fact, I kinda expected this sort of reaction. I felt like one of those movies stars in Los Mangeles. Pinkie seemed to be taking the media attention pretty well as she began playfully posing beside me, making herself open to the cameras.
".....That's just Pinkie Pie.......Pinkamena, in that case......" , I thought to myself as we made our way to the booths.
"Two pairs of skates for us please." , I announced to one of the service men.
He nodded and grabbed two pairs of skates for me and Pinkamena. He came around the counter and presented them, bowing down in front of us. This seemed to draw more attention as the massive hoard of ponies who were a few feet behind us started gossiping loudly.
I waved my hoof,
"Thank you, but no need for formalities good sir. Save that for you princess."
That seemed to do the trick as he quickly sat up and gave a sheepish smile, handing us our skates.
I opened the door with my telekinesis to let Pinkamena go first into the main arena. I soon followed after her, and so did the crowd of excited ponies. The place.....was......massive. Two and a half miles of track length, housed in an entire dome. The entire track, glazed over with ice, the 34 degree banking of the two left turns, the massive iced over infield for the fillies to play around in. The whole damn track was a big ass giant oval!!! I looked to see ponies already on there, skating in pack rows as they zoomed around the ice track, going left on the tri-oval bank.
I smiled,
"This is going to be fun. Probably the best fun I'll have in life. Pinkamena I hope you know how to go fast, 'cause when I get on there, I'm go-....." .
I stopped talking, because I was talking to nobody. Pinkamena wasn't beside me anymore.
I then turned to look back at the ice track and saw her already on there. She was going fast....really fast. I looked at her as she zoomed past the other ponies who were speeding down the track too. I was baffled. How did she get over there that quickly.....?
Never mind. Pinkamena logic.
The stands surrounded the entire circumference of the track for viewing purposes whenever ever races were held here. I assumed this was a community day. I sat on my haunches and used my telekinesis to put on my skates. I still questioned how these Earth ponies were able to get their skates on without cutting themselves. It's tricky to put these on, that's why I got lazy and used my powers instead. Once they were laced on, I made my way to the tunnel that led to the infield. I saw the light as I reached the end of the tunnel and came on to the ice infield. I lightly placed my four hooves on the ice. Nothing I haven't felt before. Feels similar to when I skated across the polar ice caps. I pushed my left hooves to the side and the same with my right hooves as I began to glide and skate over the ice. All the ponies on the infield and most of them in the stands started wildly cheering at my appearance, taking pictures and everything. I smiled to myself and waved a hoof out to the them. They cheered even more wildly. ".....I don't believe it. They're not afraid of me either......", I thought to myself as I looked across the beaming faces of the ponies watching my every move. Yeah......this is definitely going to be on the world news tonight.
As if on cue, a couple ponies approached me. One of them was a unicorn mare holding a microphone with her magic, and the other one was holding a camera. She began to talk.
"Blossom Blade from Channel 5 Hoof News. It is a pleasure to meet you, your supremeness." , she lightly bowed.
I'll let this one slide for now.
She asked me a question, "Please tell us, what made you come here to the Celestia Supericeway Arena sir?" .
I responded, "Actually I was invited here by the owner of this arena as a special visitor to support the funding for the Celestia Charity Organization. And as you can tell, it's attracting a lot of people here." . I motioned my head towards the crowd of ponies that were around us, as well as the ponies that were starting to fill the stands on the outside of the track. She seemed to have agreed with me.
She closed her report, "Well we hope you have the best time of your life here and many good wishes to you and Pinkamena Diane Pie." .
My eyes went wide as my ears drooped at that last statement. She smiled and skated away along with her cameraman and some following ponies.
How the hell did she......never mind. At this point, it's quite obvious.
I looked around the main track try to spot Pinkamena. I didn't see her. Then I heard a voice from close behind me.
"Hi Aurora!!!!" , Pinkie shouted.
I screamed and one of my hooves slipped on the ice. I smacked the ice face first and doubled over. She gasped, and so did a few other ponies who were trailing after us.
"Ohh I'm sorry! Are you ok?" . She helped me up as I got back up and stood on all fours again.
I shook my head, "I'm fine, just a little sore on the nose." , I winced as I tried to put on a strong face. She came up to me and kissed me on the lips. The entire crowd in the stadium roared. Great. Thanks a lot Pinkamena.
She backed away from my face and smiled, her straight hair falling over half her face,
"Better....?"
My mind was already flying on a rainbow. I muttered with a slightly goofy smile,
"Yeah....much better."
We both skated to the main track, keeping ourselves on the apron side of the track so we were out of the way of the speeding ponies as we gained our speed. About a minute later, we were gliding on the ice fast enough to join the other ponies. I allowed her to pass in front of me as we moved to the main track. We were going really fast. I could feel it. I never knew skating in a circle, making a left turn every 15 seconds would be so addicting. I was gaining even more speed as I tried to keep up with her, who was way up there with about 30 other ponies ahead of me.
"You think you're faster than The Aurora Boreallis? Oh hell no. It's on Pinkamena."
I increased the pacing of my hooves as I began to quickly catch up to the back of the pack of the ponies. I got as close as I could to the back of one of them, and then felt my hooves glide on the ice as I matched their speed of the pack of racing ponies.
We use a strategy here at any supericeway. It's called "pack drafting" . It's when you get so close to a group of racing ponies, that once a line formation is achieved, you get sucked into the speed vacuum of however fast the pack is going, therefore creating a draft. It's a good move that's been used by everypony from races, to even just proving how fast you can go.
I moved to the left side of the pony I was behind and I felt myself gain even more speed as I began to pass ponies on my right side. I followed up closely to another lone pack of skaters as we made the 34 degree bank turn. I almost felt like I was going sideways, but not enough to go completely vertical. I hooked on to another draft pack of ponies as we passed through the tri-oval of the track. I looked up at the stands. More ponies were packing up in the stands than the ice infield, cheering and taking pictures of the action that was going on. This wasn't even a real race, but I definitely felt like I was putting a show for them.
I lifted my head so I could see how many more ponies I need to pass to get to Pinkamena. I saw a blur of pink, 14 ponies ahead of me. "...Good. 14 more to go. I got you now...." , I told myself as I latched on to another draft pack and followed closely. I started to feel the wind blow my mane and tail wildly. We were going really fast. We had to be skating at least 178 mph now. I was ready to max out. I locked my target onto Pinkamena, who was skating almost effortlessly ahead of the other ponies. I glided to the side of the pack and felt the slingshot take effect. I moved up and passed about 9 ponies. "....Almost there...." , I told myself as I began to approach the remaining six ponies ahead of me before I could reach Pinkamena, who had already created a three second gap between her and the rest of the pack. While gliding at 190 mph, I carefully tailgated the back of the pack. But then, I felt a force behind me. I looked back and saw all 50 ponies I had passed, following closely behind me, like right behind me.
"..Oh shit!" , I cursed.
A pack broke off from the main pack of racing ponies and started to speed up and approach my left side fast. The crowd cheered and roared as they realized the small competition was heating up. I had to do something or I would fall behind. I looked in front of me. Good. I was still right up behind the remaining six ponies. I had to make a decision, and quick. Without thinking it through, I glided to my left and blocked the path of the oncoming pack of ponies. The pack moved to the right and the other pack of 40 ponies caught onto their draft and started passing me on my right side.
"NOOOO!!!!!" , I shouted.
There was no one behind me. I had lost the draft and the ponies were skating past me. I Furiously moved my hooves left and right, trying to skate faster to keep up. Another pack broke off from the main pack on the right and skated up to tailgate me. The draft was back. I felt myself gliding faster and faster forward. I didn't need to skate anymore.
I kept my hooves balanced on the ice as I sped up and met up with the lead of the pack that passed me. It was on. Mono e Mono. One pack vs. the other. I looked at the pony who was skating beside me, leading the pack of racers he had. He looked at the pack of racers that were drafting me.
He smiled and yelled, "With you permission your supremeness, I challenge you to the finish line!" .
I smiled and responded with a laugh,
"You're on!!!"
We both skated furiously as we approached the last banking turn before we got to the tri-oval, where the start/finish line was. Both of us started having streams of mist flow from behind us. That was the sign. We were skating at 200 mph! He looked behind him and saw the flowing white mist radiate from his body. Something sparkled on his flank. I looked at it and saw a cutie mark appear. It was a picture of skates with lightning coming from the blades. My eyes went wide with surprise. He got his cutie mark.
I shouted to him,
"You got your cutie mark!" .
He responded as we went through the tri-oval,
"What?!?"
I shouted again,
"I said, You got your cuti-.....F**K!!!!!" .
I cursed loudly as the blade on the front of my hooves dug too deep into the ice. My body flew and went airborne. My wings weren't even open. I looked at him in fear as my body flew forward at 200 mph, hovering over the ice by inches.
"...No way in hell I'm gonna mess up my face because of this....." .
I quickly turned my body to the side as it finally impacted the ice. I doubled over, sliding on my back. The ponies in the draft pack behind me stopped too soon as the ponies that were following behind them collided. I saw the entire crowd in the stands gasp as they stood up. Then I felt my wings unravel from my sides.
"....No no no no no no no!!!!!" , I repeated in my head as I tried to shut my wings.
Too late.
The air caught my wings like a parachute and lifted me off the ground, in a "not" flying position. Time seemed to have gone in slow motion. My wings dragged me up and off the ice, the rest of my body followed. The leader of the pack of ponies that were skating behind him passed right under me as I went airborne uncontrollably.
I looked back in front of me, just in time to see myself about to impact the ten foot high catch fence.
"....Yep....definitely gonna make the world news for this...." .
That was the last though that ran through my mind before my body slammed into the catch fence at 200 mph.
