Chapter 7: Blushing Feathers?

“Uhh, hi,” I managed to spit out.

“Who is he,” the smaller unicorn said, turning to Rarity with a suspicious look on her face.

“He is a friend that’s going to be staying with me until he gets a place of his own,” Rarity said, giving me a subtle nod. Ohhhhhh right, this must be where I come in.

“Yes, that, umm… yeah, well, you see,” I couldn’t quite get the words out of my mouth. They sat there on the tip of my tongue, mocking me, I could feel them there. It wasn’t long before I just gave up and shrank away in frustration.

“What he means to say is, we’re new in town, and we’ll be out of your hair in a jiffy, riiiight,” said familiar voice. I glanced up to see Harry standing behind the 2 unicorns. When they realized this, they both jumped and dashed into the room with me. Harry flashed me a mischievous grin, to which I just rolled my eyes.

“Ahem, yes, that, we don’t plan on staying for very long anyways, but in the meantime, I think we might want to look into getting jobs or something,” I said, shrugging innocently.

“Yeah, that might be a good idea,” Harry said, giving a quick shake off before coming into the now crowded bedroom.

“So is there something we need to know,” I asked Rarity, gesturing towards the… what’s the word… filly? Ugh, I really should’ve paid attention during that stupid agriculture presentation.

“Yes, I would like you two to meet Sweetie Belle, she is my little sister,” Rarity said, almost clenching her teeth shut on the words ‘little sister.’ Ahhhhh siblings, the kind of thing that brings families together. Good thing I’m adopted, or so the internet tells me. Okay, not really adopted, you know how people on the internet get, though.

“Hey Sweetie Belle, my name is David, and this pony here is Harry,” as I said this, Harry giggled when I said her name. It was everything I could do to not facehoof.

“What kind of names are those,” Sweetie Belle asked, knocking me off balance with the bluntness of her question.

“Ah ha ha ha, well, we aren’t from around here, so sorry if our named sound a bit weird,” I replied nervously. Harry just couldn’t contain himself and fell over on the ground laughing.

After 20 solid minutes of awkward conversation and Harry splitting his sides from laughing so much, we decided it would be best to leave the sisters alone and go get a look around town. Against my better judgement, I left my coat on the mannequin. What was the worst that could happen?

While we were going through town, I couldn’t help but feel like someone was avoiding us, couldn’t place my hoof on it, though. Anyways, we decided to introduce ourselves to some of the residents, leaving out the fact that we were from another dimension obviously, wouldn’t want to cause a scene, now. Everyone was really nice, and were very patient when we asked them directions around town.

After making our fifth or so pass around town square, we decided we might hit up the library. After all, Twilight said she’d be there, and we could stop by if we had the time. Did we have the time? I say we do.

“Hey Harry, wanna go to the library,” I asked my winged companion.

“Why,” he replied with no hesitation.

“Because we don’t have anywhere specific to go and I think we could go hang out with Twilight and Spike for a bit,” I said, giving him my best serious face.

“Why,” he asked again, giving me a mischievous grin.

“Because walking around has lost its pizzazz,” I said, giving a light shrug.

“Why,” he replied once again, this time widening his smile.

“Okay stop that, let’s go to the library,” I said, spinning to start heading towards Twilight’s library.

“Hey David,” I heard Harry ask, as I started making my way across the square to our destination.

“Yeah,” I replied, giving no real mind to it unless it’s really shocking, which is rare.

“I think you’re going the wrong way,” Harry said, unusually serious.

“What makes you say that,” I inquired, worry beginning to show in my voice.

“Because I can see it over this way,” he answered, flying up off the ground shoving his hoof in the direction opposite of the way I was going.

“I…b … whatever, let’s just get going,” I mumbled, stupid pegasi and their wings… I could be a guide too if I had wings, a pair of wings so I could fly up and find things… Whatever.

As we approached Twilight’s library, we heard the sound of crashing books. This, of course, was followed by muffled voices, arguing or something, I don’t know, it was too muffled to make out. Harry and I stood on the doorstep listening to the ruckus inside for what seemed like a good 15 minutes before I knocked on the door.

For a few seconds, everything went quiet. I knocked again, still nothing. I knocked once more, this time a voice called out.

“Gimme a sec, just hang on,” said a voice from inside. It sounded like Spike, and he didn’t seem too happy. I got ready to jump to the side in case we were greeted by a gout of fire from the other side of the door.

A few seconds and loud thumps later, the door opened, revealing a disgruntled looking Spike, with mountains of disorganized books behind him.

“Oh, it’s you guys, come on in, I guess,” Spike sighed, and motioned for us to come in. Harry didn’t need to be told twice before he barreled in, almost making the mess worse. I hesitantly glanced and the baby dragon, and then back to the mess. Wordlessly, I made my way in, carefully as to not make a bigger mess of things.

“Spike, who was i-Oh, hello guys, didn’t expect to see you so soon, I thought Rarity would be helping you settle into her place,” said the purple unicorn, now peering out from the other side of one the book piles.

“Ha, yeah, about that, her sister came and visited her, so we thought we’d let them have some alone time and take a stroll around town,” I said, grinning nervously and rubbing the back of my head.

“Oh, well that was nice of you two, if I’d have known you’d be coming though, I would’ve rescheduled my reorganization of the library until tomorrow,” Twilight said, now giving us a worried look. I almost felt like we kicked Spike the way she was looking at us.

“Don’t worry about it, we didn’t know we were coming either,” Harry chimed in, going through books in one pile. I snickered at the sight, I didn’t expect Harry to really go through books like that.

“Yeah, besides, we might be able to help you,” I said still grinning at the pegasus sifting through books.

“Thanks for the offer, but I don’t think that’ll be necessary,” Twilight said, waving a hoof at me, and focusing back to the pile of books in front of her.

“Oh, okay the-“ I managed to get out, before Harry chimed in.

“OH OH, What’s this,” he said, dashing across the room and shoving the book he had in his mouth in Twilight’s face.

“That is… oh my,” Twilight said, turning to get a better look at the book Harry was holding. She blushed and started sweating.

Spike snickered when he caught a glimpse of the cover, knowing exactly what the book was. I made my way over next to him to try and keep this quiet, don’t want Twilight to be even more embarrassed than she probably already is.

“What is it, what is in that book,” I whispered to Spike.

“Oh, it’s one of Twilight’s romance books, it’s kinda on the steamy side from what Twilight’s told me,” he replied between chuckles. I covered my mouth with a hoof and started quietly laughing also. Of course Harry would find the one thing in a pile of books that would turn the purple unicorn bright pink.

“Harry, I think you might wanna put that down,” I said, stifling my laughter long enough to hear a reply.

“Why, it looks neat,” Harry said, now flipping through the pages. What came next was inevitable, his expression changed from happy and excited, to shocked, to nervous and blushing. Spike and I burst into laughter. Before Harry could read anymore, Twilight yanked the book from his grip with a spell and tossed it across the room. Needless to say Spike and I were just rolling on the ground, laughing.

“Umm… yeah, sorry, I don’t know how that got down here, usually that’s up in my room,” Twilight said, with a blush.

“Right, umm… David, I think we should go, and let her get back to what she was doing,” Harry said, turning to head out the door.

“But we only just got here, besides, I have some questions I wanna ask Twilight,” I told Harry, clearing my throat and standing back up.

“Well fine, you can stay here and hang out with her, I’m gonna go fly around town for a bit,” Harry said, before quickly making his way out the door, and slamming it shut. Hmm, normally he isn’t like that. He’s usually the one making everyone else storm out. Could he be… embarrassed?

Let’s Follow Harry

Harry took a deep breath and looked around. There were a few clouds in the sky, but otherwise it was a clear day.

“Hmm… maybe a quick go around town would do me some good, and give me a bit of practice with my wings,” Harry said, flexing his wings. Without wasting another moment, he took off into the sky, shakily at first, but leveling out and gaining speed. Once he was steady, he began heading towards town, which looked a bit different from the sky.

He started seeing places they haven’t gone yet, and even saw a familiar pink pony dashing around town. He was about to spin to go see what she was up to, when he felt something crash into him broadside. He was sent tumbling down into the nearest cloud, which supported him, and stopped him from crashing into the town below.

“Oww,” was all Harry could get out before he was assaulted by a voice he wasn’t familiar with.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there, are you okay, ohhh, please be okay,” Harry turned to see a gray coated pegasus, with a light yellow mane and tail, and a cutie mark of a stream of bubbles. Harry was just about to use a clever pick up line, when he got a good look at her face. Particularly the eyes, one of which was trained on him, and the other was trained on the cloud.

“I’m… fine… umm,” Harry said, words lost on him.

“Oh, my name is Ditzy Doo, but everyone calls me Derpy Hooves, or Derpy for short, though I’m not sure why,” Ditzy said, putting a hoof to her chin in contemplation. She snapped out of it when she realized what she was doing in the first place.

“OH right, the package, I gotta get it to Cloudsdale, and be back so I can make dinner for Dinky, I better get going,” Ditzy exclaimed in a panicked tone.

“Oh, is that all, well, I’ll be more than happy to come with, if you want,” Harry said, trying to calm her down some.

“That’s nice of you, but I really gotta get there and go, no time for dawdling, besides, you must’ve been there at least once, all pegasi have,” Ditzy said matter of factly before taking off in the direction of Cloudsdale. Harry wasted no time, and followed her, even though he was new to flying, he kept pace with her, but couldn’t quite catch up. After a while, he gave up, and flew back to town.

“Man, I really gotta work on my flying, even that cross eyed girl was faster than me,” he said, before slumping down on a cloud to watch the ponies scurry around in the street.

Back to the Library

“I’m sorry, I didn’t expect him to find it,” Twilight apologetically said for the, oh I don’t know how many times, more than 10 I know that much.

“Twilight, it’s fine, he get embarrassed, and he goes on jogs, he’s done it before, he’ll be back in a few minutes or so, and if not, I’ll find him eventually,” I replied, facehoofing. She’s nice enough but she likes to worry, it’s cute but not when she’s apologizing for something she didn’t mean to happen.

“Yeah, calm down Twilight, it’s not like he was angry, he was probably just overwhelmed,” Spike said, rubbing the unicorn’s back.

“No, but it’s my fault, if I had been more careful with my books, this wouldn’t have happened,” Twilight said, blushing and burying her face in her hooves. I rolled my eyes before turning to look through a random pile of books, on the other side of the room. A lot of them looked like guides to different things, like how to have a sleep over, how to run a race, what to do in case of a zombie pony attack.

“Wait a moment,” I exclaimed, picking up the Skeptics Guide to Defend Against Zombie Ponies.

“Hmm, oh, that’s Spike’s, I got it for him for his birthday a year or so ago,” Twilight said, noticing the cover from between her hooves. Huh, zombie ponies, never would’ve thought I would be so glad to hear the term.

“You don’t say, well, we have a similar belief, back home,” I said, shrugging and opening the book casually to the table of contents. I was amazed to find out that the author took the time to find out every little detail. How to avoid zombies, where to find food and water, what necessities you need to bring with you to survive, and not overburden you, it’s all here.

I got halfway through the introductory chapter before I felt a light tapping on my shoulder. I sighed and closed the book, turning towards the tapping.

“Hey, shouldn’t you go look for your friend, it’s been almost twenty minutes now,” asked a curious Spike.

“Hmm, oh, you’re right, time flies when you’re reading, I guess, well it’s been fun, but I gotta go, take care everyone-err pony, everypony,” I said trying to correct myself, this new lingo is gonna take a while to get down.

“See ya, bro,” Spike said, waving a claw.

“Goodbye,” Twilight said, poking her head from out of her hooves.

On that note, I dashed out the door, and collided with something on the other side, head first. I fell over to the side and landed on my back with a loud thud. Oww. Who put whatever was in the way there, I’m gonna have words with them about that.

“Oww, I didn’t get hit that hard since, well, since ever, really,” said a slightly bubbly voice that was all too familiar to me. I managed to roll my body and lift my head high enough to see a certain 4th wall breaking pink pony rubbing her head and lying on her back.

“Oh, sorry ab-OW,” I managed to get that, before Pinkie inadvertently kicked my head. I curled up and covered my head with my forehooves.

“Huh, OH I’M SORRY, are you okay,” Pinkie said, bolting upright and appearing at my side in an instant.

“That REALLY hurt, you know, but I’ll be fine,” I said, rubbing my head. I managed to get up and was being stared at by a small crowd, Pinkie on one side of me, then 2 pairs of eyes at the library door. Twilight and Spike had witnessed me collide into their friend, fall over, and then get kicked, I can only imagine the joy they were getting out of it.

Spike was snickering lightly, but Twilight looked concerned.

“Are you two okay,” she asked, leaning forward a bit.

“I’m fine,” I muttered, rubbing my head with a hoof, it was still kinda throbbing, but fine otherwise.

“I’m okay, oh hey Twilight when will you be… OH DAVID,” Pinkie said, before plating her hooves over my ears, muffling the world. I groaned, and slouched some. Before I knew it, though, it was over, sound was returned, and the first things I heard were…

“Great, I’ll see you two there, and you, sir, need to quit being nosy, you’ll spoil everything,” Pinkie said, chastising me, and before I could ask what or why, she vanished in a pink blur. It’s like trying to keep up with pure caffine.

“Ooookay, anyways, I’m off to find Harry, I’ll see you two later, I guess,” I said shrugging and making my way towards town.

“Oh, that’ll be sooner than you think,” was all I heard from Twilight, before her and Spike retreated back into the treehouse library. What did she mean by that? Haven’t even been here a week and already I feel like something is gonna blow up. Oh well, off to town.

Into town, once again

I wandered through the town square, it was still busy, even though it must’ve been about 12:00 or so. I asked a few of the pegasi around if they’ve seen a white coated blue maned pegasus, which they haven’t. I sighed every time, but thanked them. I kept an eye to the sky, in case he was up there doing something.

Harry was staring down at the square, nothing was really happening, just everyone hanging out, buying things, same old same old. He yawned, and stretched out a bit. He didn’t remember being this tired when he left the library not so long ago.

“Maybe just a quick nap, then I’ll head back over and find David,” Harry said, curling up on the cloud and drifting off to sleep.

Dang it, who knew finding someone like him would be so frustrating! He’s gotta be around here somewhere, I know it.

“Mark my words, I WILL find you,” I said, raising a hoof to the sky.

“Uhh, you alright there, pard’ner,” asked another familiar voice. I turned to see Applejack, wearing her hat, and an added apron. I tilted my head at the sight, she didn’t seem the type to wear anything more than necessary.

“Hi Applejack, umm… why are you wearing an apron,” I asked bluntly.

“Oh, this, shoot, I’m here sellin’ today’s haul, Big Mac’s back at the farm gettin’ more,” the orange pony said, with a smile and a nod. I tilted my head again, but this time to look at her stand, it was full of apples. Big, red, juicy, apples. I grinned, and turned back to her.

“Okay, that’s cool, but I’m tryin’ to find Harry, have ya seen him anywhere,” I asked, unwillingly sliding into a southern accent similar to her own.

“Hey, are ya makin’ fun o’ me,” Applejack replied, giving me an evil eye stare. Oh crap, worst possible time for this.

“No no no, sorry, old habit of mine, not important, I apologize, anyways, have you seen my friend, he’s been missing for a few minutes now, and I can’t seem to find him,” I said, nervously taking a couple of steps away for fear of being hit.

“Hmm, no ah haven’t, but might wanna keep an eye to the clouds, I reckon he might be nappin’ up there,” explained the cowgirl. “Oh, and if you mock me again, I will hit you,” she said, taking a step closer, to me. I took a step back and felt a bead of sweat trail down from my forehead to my muzzle.

“Got it, anyways, gotta go, see ya later Applejack,” I said, quickly spinning around and taking off in the opposite direction. As I made my way from her apple stand, I swear I could hear her laughing. Oh well, no time to stop, I gotta find a pegasus to help me check the clouds for my wayward pegasus friend.

Author’s Note: I apologize for the time it took to get this chapter out, real life stuff happened, and it got delayed. Anyways, here is where my weird narration might come and bite me in the ass, but I’m going to find a way to make it work. It has to. I hope…
