Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, 11:35 P.M., Friday, July 20th, 2001, 10 years ago

“Welcome to your entrance exam, Mr. Flare. The exam will start once the egg is brought in.”

The little colt scowled at the four teachers who were soon to be judging him, then turned to his parents, “Mom, I keep telling you this isn’t gonna help!”

“I’m sorry Midnight, but we have no other choice. If you’re going to be able be to become better with your fire, then you’re going to have to enroll in a magic’s school. Don’t you want to be a good role model for your younger sister, Twilight? She’s started looking up to you, and magic would be a good road in life for her.”

A pony came into the room, wheeling in a cart with a purple dragon egg sitting on top of it. The cart had an image on the side depicting an egg being broken open, revealing a dragon.

“How, am I supposed to do this?!” Midnight shouted at the four teachers, frustrated.

One of the teachers glared at him and spoke up. “You’re enrolling in a school for gifted unicorns. If you can’t even hatch a baby dragon egg then we don’t feel you are a worthy student.”

“*Grrrr* Fine!” He tried his hardest to do anything to the egg. As he struggled, flames started to grow rapidly on his horn. The flames shot off towards the egg and created an explosion of fire. The flames destroyed the cart and the egg on it, and the flames traveled through the air towards the teachers. The teachers instantly caught on fire. Midnight watched helplessly as he heard the teachers scream out their last breaths as they were burned alive. “What have I done?!” He thought to himself. He turned over to his parents who were trembling in fear in the corner of the room. “Pull yourself together, I’ve gotta get us out of this.” He looked around the room trying to find a way out. He spotted a window just a few feet from his parents. He gathered flames around his horn, aiming his horn at the window. “Come on, I can do this!” He struggled to control the fire that could easily end the lives of his parents. After a moment, Midnight shot the fire. The flames darted directly at the window, and blew a hole through the wall. “Mom, Dad! Through the hole! Come on!” The three ponies ran through the hole, escaping the burning room, and headed towards their house.

Canterlot Residential Area, 11:35 P.M., Monday, July 17th, 2001, 10 years ago

“Midnight,” His mom opened his door, “Midnight are you gonna be okay?” The dark-grey pony was sitting in the corner of his room, lights off, back to the wall.

“I’ll be fine.” Midnight kept his head to the ground, “Just, give me some time alone.”

“Okay, I hope you get better soon.” She closed the door, and left.

“What’s wrong with me?” Midnight Flare was a dark grey alicorn pony from Canterlot. Though his entire family consisted of unicorns, he never really questioned his special case. He was still too young to understand it. His entire family wa ponies that could use magic, but he was different. His magic was only fire based. He had never been good at controlling that fire. His temper always got the best of him. “I’ll never be a positive influence on Twilight. If I stay, only bad will come of it. I’ll probably burn all of Canterlot down if I don’t do something about it. I need to leave, and start over.” He walked out of his bedroom, and snuck passed his parents.

He walked up to Twilight’s bedroom, and the door was partially open. He peered into the room to see little Twilight, sleeping peacefully under her star covered bed sheet. “I’m sorry, Twilight.” He frowned, and walked away, out the front door. Walking away from his home, he stopped and looked back to it. “I’m sorry, Mom and Dad.” He ran out of the city and flew into the air. “I need to start over. In a place that I can be accepted. Maybe I can go to a flights school in Cloudsdale. That way I can concentrate on my flying instead of my fire. Then it’s decided, I’ll go to Cloudsdale and try to find the Flights school.”
