Chapter 12: Training Difficulties

As the sun rose over the city of Manehatten, the light shone through the large windows of the penthouse and into the bedroom of the hotel suite.

Spitfire groaned slightly as the bright light hit her eyes. She tried to put up a forehoof to shield herself, but it was no use.

Spitfire rubbed her eyes with her other free hoof before looking over at the clock on the bedside table. Upon seeing the time, her eyes widened and she quickly turned to Rainbow Dash, who was still using her marefriends Wing as a pillow. Spitfire nudged the sky blue mare. “Come on Dash, or Silver is gonna have our wings if we don’t show up for training."

Rainbow Dash opened her eyes slowly and smiled when she saw her marefriend. “Hey, Spits. Are we really that late?” she asked with a groggy tone as she awoke.

Spitfire confirmed Dash's question with a nod. She then pushed the covers off the bed before she made her way towards the far side of the bedroom where her saddlebags were. She opened the top of the bag before pulling out her Wonderbolt uniform.

Dash's mind started to wonder as Spitfire got into the suit. “...I can’t remember where I put my uniform,” Rainbow said silently to herself as she looked round the room.

Spitfire looked over at Dash. “Well… is it not in your saddlebags?” she asked quizzically.

Dash thought for a moment, she decided it was best to go and check. She nervously got out of bed and made her way into the living room of the apartment where she had last scene her saddlebags.

Dash found what she was looking for on the couch, she cautiously opened the top of the bag and was relieved when she saw the blue suit neatly tucked in the bag.

Dash happily took out the uniform and put it on, but it was far from an easy fit. Spitfire walked out of the bedroom and nearly burst into laughter at the sight of her marefriend, who was still trying to get the uniform past her waist. Spitfire shook her head playfully as she came over and helped the mare to get the rest of the tight jumpsuit on.

Rainbow smiled sheepishly when Spitfire finished helping her with the rest of the tight suit. Spitfire grinned. “It’s a struggle when you’ve got such a big flank,” she said, making her way to the elevator.

Dash's eyes widened and she resisted the urge to drop her jaw, but couldn’t stop from blushing. “I-I…don’t have a big flank...do I?”

Spitfire turned around. She smiled warmly and trotted back over and gave Dash a quick kiss on the cheek. “No, I was only kidding, your flanks are cute,” she said playfully, winking at the mare.

Dash shook her head in slight disbelief as Spitfire let out a muffled giggle. After a few moments the pair soon got into the elevator. Dash looked over at the golden mare as she spoke, “I’m gonna get you back for that,” she said with a smirk.

Spitfire nuzzled the mare. “You’ll have to keep that for later. Right now we’ve got to act like proper citizens of Equestria,” she said in a posh tone, posing in a royal stance. It was only a few moments before both mare’s burst out with laughter as the elevator opened up to reveal the lobby.

Spitfire and Rainbow quickly stopped their laughter and cautiously trotted out onto the lobby. Spitfire opened the door to the exit of the hotel, letting the sky blue mare out first before leaving quietly.

Rainbow sighed, she breathed in a fresh gulp of air and looked around the city as the sun began to rise higher into the sky.

Spitfire came out of the hotel and quickly spread her wings. “Come on, Dash. I’ll race ya,” she said, her competitiveness catching up with her.

Dash grinned at the mare. “Sure thing, just don’t be upset when you lose,” she said, flaring her wings ready for action.

Spitfire smiled. “We’ll see about that...okay 3...2...1..go!”

Soarin and the others we’re currently wandering around the large Manehatten arena. The stallion turned around to face Blazing and Rapid, who were both holding their own conversation. “Hey, you guys seen Rainbow and Spitfire?” he asked curiously.

Blazing and Rapid looked between each other before shrugging their shoulders.

Soarin sighed. “Well, I guess we’ll have to start without them,” he said, trotting back towards the center of the arena.

As the three stallions trotted across the stadium the faint sound of rushing wind could be heard above them. Soarin stopped and looked up, checking the sky above him. It was then that two streaks, one orange and yellow and the other a spectrum of colors. The two streaks rounded the corner of the stadium before descending down onto the ground below.

Soarin smiled as the two streaks landed at the far side of the stadium.

Spitfire turned to Dash. “Nice race, Dash. Maybe next time we’ll finally find a winner,” she said happily.

Dash waved a hoof. “Hey come on, I totally won there,” she retorted, sticking her tongue out at the Wonderbolt captain.

Spitfire muffled a giggle at her marefriend’s antics as Soarin and the rest of the bolts came up to them.

The pale blue stallion smiled. “Well I’m glad you both made it. Silver would have had your feathers if you didn’t show up.”

Rainbow looked at the team with confusion. “Why does he want us all to show up? He never did this in Canterlot.”

“That’s because this time we’re in Manehatten,” Silver Skies called out, causing all the Wonderbolts to turn around and face the stallion in surprise.

Everypony quickly got into a line as Silver continued, “This time we’ll be performing for a bigger audience, this time there cannot be any mistakes and this time we don’t have the whole team. Which means we’re going to have to try some new techniques if we’re to keep our reputation up in these parts,” he said.

All the ponies nodded in acceptance. Silver motioned for Spitfire to step forward, she did so. Silver leaned in. “We’re four members down for the tour, my suggestion is that you come up with a new move to compensate for it… you’ve got till the end of next week.”

Spitfire nodded in response. Silver gave all the Wonderbolts one last glance before trotting back off towards the inner parts of the arena.

Spitfire sighed and turned towards the team. “Well, that’s just busted us out of lazing around. Alright bolts, let’s get to it! I don’t want to see you all standing around!” she said as all the Wonderbolts scrambled into the air.

Rainbow struggled to hold a straight face when she heard Spitfire shout. The yellow mare looked over at her marefriend and saw her face as she tried to contain her laughter. Spitfire smiled and stuck her tongue out at her making Dash lose all her inhibitions as she let out a fit of giggles before getting into the air.

As time went on the team performed the whole routine from Canterlot, going through each phase whilst Spitfire watched intently from the ground below. The mare had to try and find a new move that would be easy enough to learn in the short time, but could also be incorporated into the routine.

As she watched the team dive into the final stages of the performance, Spitfire saw a chance for something new, she smiled and picked up her signature whistle and blew on it - signalling the Wonderbolts to line up.

Spitfire waited until the team was back on the ground before speaking, “Okay guys, I think I’ve got a way we can make this work, but I’m going to need a volunteer,” she said looking between the team members.

Rainbow stepped forward cautiously. Spitfire smiled warmly and motioned for the pegasus to come over. Blazing smiled amusingly making gestures to his younger sister. Spitfire looked over to the stallion and deadpanned him causing the stallion to fall silent again with the few muffled giggles from the rest of the team.

Spitfire looked at Dash and towards the team before she spoke, “Okay, now whilst the rest of you will go into a dive, I was thinking that me and Rainbow would burst into a double helix. Rainbow can use her natural sky streak to make it stand out more, we’ll then all go into a fast free fall when all of you guys are doing your corkscrew waves, the rest of you can then peel off into your solo performances.”

Spitfire looked at the rest of the team who all wore smiles of acceptance. Spitfire returned the smile, “Great, then lets get to it!”

All the Wonderbolt’s jumped into the air as Rainbow and Spitfire followed close behind them as the tried out the new routine.

All the ponies waited until Spitfire gave the signal to dive with a blow of her whistle. When they did Rainbow followed Spitfire in to a duel wield helix as the other ponies broke away.

Since they weren’t performing Rainbow didn’t need to worry about her streak and just kept focused on the job in hoof. She flew up into the air making sure to keep in time with her captain.

The pair spiraled around each other as they soared higher into the air. Once they got to a high altitude Dash took a moment to look down at her handiwork, she smiled when she saw her streak spiraled together with Spitfire’s blazing fire. The sky blue mare then looked back up to see Spitfire holding the same wide grin. The pair shared a knowing look before heading back down towards the stadium below.

Spitfire held a proud smile as the rest of the team collected themselves in front of her. “Great work today, guys! We’ll practice it a few more times before adding it to the routine, but a great first attempt!” she said happily.

The rest of the team nodded acceptingly. As most of the team members made their way back to the entrance of the arena, Soarin trotted over to Spitfire and Rainbow with a grin. “That was great work getting both of you in on that move,” he said knowingly.

Spitfire grinned. “She is a one of a kind, isn’t she?” she said, leaning over and giving the blue mare a quick kiss. Dash giggled in response.

Soarin smiled. “Well I was thinking about asking the team for going on a night out sometime this week if you two wanted to come along...provided that Silver even lets the pair of you walk on the same street in public,” he said, chuckling slightly.

Spitfire rolled her eyes playfully. “I think we can manage that,” she said looking towards Dash who gave an approving nod before continuing, “But first, I’m gonna need to plan out the new routine, you wanna help?” she asked kindly as the three began trotting towards the main part of the stadium.

Soarin nodded and saluted. “Nothing is too small for the trusty lieutenant,” he said happily.

Spitfire smiled and turned to Dash. “Are you coming too?” she asked.

Dash nodded. “Sure, I got nothin else to do,” she said with a smirk as all three Wonderbolt's happily trotted into the inner parts of the stadium.

Dash had felt a mix of emotions from the day so far, but she could say without a doubt that she couldn't wait for the show in Manehatten, she hoped that the next few weeks in the city would go by with out a problem, but part of her doubted that illusion...
